THE EDWARDIAN GAZETTE Message from the Headmaster Dear Parents and Community Members

Keeping current with significant educational initiatives is important. Accordingly, as previously advised, the College will be participating in the National Benchmarking Assessments designed for students in year 6. The purpose of these tests is to compare an individual’s performance against what is expected of a year 6 student in Malta. Please note that many other countries introduced this form of testing over 30 years ago. As these assessments are skills based, one cannot ‘study’ for them. Rather, preparation is done by working diligently all year. It should be said, however, that the boys are familiar with the format of the assessments as this preparation has been carried out diligently by the teachers concerned. In addition, the boys are actually sitting the sample tests which were written by the Education Department specifically for the Benchmarking exercise. Importantly, the relevant staff have attended professional development sessions in order that the administration of the tests goes according to plan. Finally, these tests do not take the place of the annual exams. Results of tests will be made available in the month of July. The dates of these assessments (held at College) are: Monday 1 June Tuesday 2 June Wednesday 3 June

Maltese English Maths

Wednesday 8 June Thursday 9 June

Maltese Oral English Oral

Students who are absent on these days can sit for the relevant test (s) on 13, 14 15 June from 4.45 – 8.00pm. End of Year Examinations These will begin 2 days later than advertised on the Calendar and will all be completed by Tuesday 28 June.

Michael Chittenden Headmaster

Annual C

During the last week of the Lent Term, all the Kindergarten children staged their annual concert relatives. Each morning, two classes performed their individual shows, followed by a finale son Tuesday 12 April, Ms Gina’s KG1 class and Ms Lycia’s KG2 class took to the stage.

The first concert was performed by Ms Lycia’s class and retold the traditional story of ‘Jack and stalk’. Matthew Z played a very convincing Jack who kept climbing up the beanstalk to visit th tle. The giant was played by Max Z.P. All of the children delivered their lines well and clearly e singing and acting performance. Ms Gina’s class concert was entitled ‘Caterpillar Boogie’ and the lifecycle of a butterfly was to singing and dancing.

The children looked delightful, dressed as wriggling caterpillars, hopping birds and beautiful bu der the ever-watchful eyes of the gardener.

Concerts Thursday 14 April, was the final day of concerts and finally it was the turn of Ms Greta (KG2) and Ms Liza (KG1)’s classes. Ms Greta’s class concert was called ‘Happy Hat Land’. The story was on the theme of sharing and taking turns, and how failure to do this results in people who spend all their time arguing! The story was based in a village which was visited by a hat seller, played with confidence by Luke B. The villagers all wanted a special silver hat that the hat seller had for sale and they kept arguing about it. Eventually, the hat seller taught them a game through which they could share the hat and all be happy. The children wore very colourful costumes and clearly enjoyed their performance.

Ms Liza’s KG1 children performed a story called ‘Tadpole Rag’ which was a tale about the life cycle of frogs. The story involved a teacher (played so well by Benjamin BG) who taught his class everything he knew about frogs. The cast included frogs, tadpoles, ducks and schoolchildren. All the children sang and wriggled through the songs and delighted the audience.

A Very Well Done to All!
