THE EDWARDIAN GAZETTE Message from the Headmaster Dear Parents and Community Members I have been teaching a group of year 2 boys for the past 5 months. Their thirst for learning never ceases to amaze me. The younger the mind, it seems, the bigger the sponge. Years ago, expository or argument essays were not written until students reached secondary level. At St Edward’s College we tackle these from year 2 onwards (for those students who are ready). Please find below an examples of Expository (taking one point of view) and Discussion (discussing both sides of the argument and drawing conclusions). Importantly, they were written without my assistance. I would dearly love to see their work when they progress to Sixth Form. Expository Writing Should We Eat Junk Food I believe that junk food is not good for you. Here are the reasons. Firstly, you may get sick. Furthermore, you may get a tummy ache. Studies have shown you can get brown teeth. Secondly, you can put on too much weight. Lastly, it is not good for your body. In this essay, I have shown that junk food is not good for you. Nigel Year 2 Discussion Writing Should We Wear School Uniform In this discussion I am going to show the reasons for wearing a school uniform and not wearing a school uniform. I will now give the reasons for wearing a school uniform. Firstly, when people wear a uniform they show that they are part of a group. We all look the same. Furthermore when you go on an outing you can be easily recognized. On the other hand……Firstly you shouldn’t wear a school uniform because it will become boring. In addition some uniforms aren’t warm. Also you could get into trouble if you don’t wear the correct uniform. In this essay I have shown that it is best to wear a uniform because you could look smarter in it. Alex S year 2
