During May, the Year 5 boys went on an outing to the Majjistral Nature and History Park. When we arrived, we met a guide who was going to tell us about all the wonderful plants and flowers we would see. After a couple of minutes a flock of birds flew over our heads. The guide told us that they were starlings and swifts and that they where migrating north for the summer because it is too hot in North Africa. While we were walking, we started collecting small bullets. We came across so many bullets; I was amazed how many we found. A few boys saw some cracks in the ground and asked what they were. The guide said the land was slowly moving and falling away and eventually the large rocks would fall into the sea. We continued our walk and I found a coral reef fossil and gave it to my friend. During our lunch break, we were chatting to our guide and she mentioned a very large flock of storks that I had seen a few days before. She said that they were very rare and it was a real privilege to see such a wonderful sight. When we started walking again, we stopped and the guide took a piece of string out of her bag and tied a small stone to each end of the string. She laid the string across a hedge of flowers. She asked us to count as many different plants as we could within this line. There were about 9 different species of plants. Some boys started running ahead and a boy went to tell him he was going the wrong way. We got to the end of the walk and thanked the guide. I think that was the best outing I ever went on. This is because we learnt so much about Malta’s wonderful nature. This has taught me to respect our environment so that the countryside will remain peaceful and intact, to be enjoyed by future generations. By Harry P E – Year 5Y
