THE EDWARDIAN GAZETTE Message from the Headmaster Dear Parents and Community Members This week, I want to focus on an important part of our School Development Plan: International Boarding. Quite simply, the financial boost that international boarding gives to schools in England is very significant indeed. In fact, many of these schools would fail to exist if their boarding component were to cease.

In the context of recruiting boarders, Mr. Thomas and I will be travelling to Tripoli (Libya). You may be aware that this country was the main source for boarders when the College had a boarding component. Many expatriate workers relied heavily on St Edward‟s College for their sons‟ education.

Basically, we are recruiting male boarders from 11 years onwards and females at 6th Form level. At approximately €16,000 per year (including tuition fees), the College offers an extremely good alternative to boarding in England.

Of course, we are encouraging our current students to make boarding a part of their lives also. Currently, we are offering to our present students, boarding on a weekly basis through to the whole of the year.

For further information, please email me hm@stedwards.edu.mt

Best wishes Michael Chittenden Headmaster

THE EDWARDIAN GAZETTE News from the Library Books for Vouchers I would like to extend my thanks to Agenda for giving us this opportunity to enhance our library. An even bigger thank you goes to all the parents who sent in these vouchers which are given free when buying textbooks and are only redeemable by school representatives. Each voucher is worth 1 euro 16 cents and may not seem much but as you can see from the pictures when you receive 550 of these vouchers it makes a big difference to our Library. The Junior School are particularly happy this year with their brand new set of 35 Geronimo Stilton Books.

Ms Tania Sultana Librarian The photos show the books the Librarian chose from Miller in Luqa on Wednesday 1 December with the „Agenda Books for Schoolsâ€&#x; vouchers.

THE EDWARDIAN GAZETTE Articles OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY – (5) A Miscellany of Hazards At College, we continually carry out risk assessments. With over 700 people on our property, the risk of a person being hurt is relatively high. Hence, there is a need to be aware of potential risks and taking the appropriate action. This applies to the home situation as well. Please find below a useful process to make the home environment safer. The Risk Assessment A risk assessment is really a simple exercise, based mainly on common sense. It consists of 4 basic steps that are meant to address any hazards that may be lurking around: 1. Identify the hazard [s] 2. Who are the persons at risk? 3. Evaluate this risk (is it low, medium or high?) 4. Implement adequate risk control measures Obviously, the higher the level of risk, the quicker the action needed to eliminate or at least control it i.e. by bringing the risk down to a low level where harm will seldom occur. In real life, risk elimination (i.e. a zero risk level) is not always possible and so one has to be content with reducing it as much as practically possible.

The boys are donating 2 Euros and making a collage which will be sent to Africa. Each boy is given a sticker for helping to save the orphaned rhinos. Rhinos are in danger of extinction. THE EDWARDIAN GAZETTE Middle & Senior School Languages Department Every year, the Languages Department organizes a celebration of healthy food. This year‟s event on Thursday 18 November coincided with “La Semaine du Goût” in France. The Middle School students participated in the making of healthy and tasty cakes. 28 students displayed various kinds of home made cakes using their imagination and creativity to make a cake as healthy as possible. Products included: carrot cake, pineapple cake, dark chocolate cake, yogurt cake, cookies and many others. Some students created a chart to promote healthy eating on that day. Each portion of cake was sold for €1. We are proud to announce that €210 worth of cakes were sold. All proceeds went to St Joseph Institute in Zabbar. We would like to thank all the dedicated mothers who joined us in this event and who devoted time to make a cake with their sons. It is important to remember that there are many less fortunate children just round the corner. Giving them something small at Christmas is enough to bring a smile to their face and more importantly to know that another child thought of them. Thanks are extended to the House Tutors, teachers and Senior School students who helped a great deal. Ms Dominique Inglott Head of Languages

THE EDWARDIAN GAZETTE Miscellaneous

THE EDWARDIAN GAZETTE Miscellaneous Christmas Raffle 2010 APPEAL Many Old Edwardians will fondly remember Ms Josephine Spiteri who was a Year 2 class teacher for many years. She is now retired and does voluntary work at the „St Jeanne Antide Foundation‟ in Tarxien. Among the many services offered by this foundation is the Homework Club. Ms Spiteri forms part of the Homework Services Team.. The club is for children and young persons who cannot cope with their school homework because they may not have enough support at home or for some other reason approved by the social worker. One-to-one homework assistance is given to families selected in consultation with the social worker from the Centre. The assistance is tailor-made to the needs of each child. Ms Spiteri told us that the Foundation is always in need of monetary and/or educational resources and we have decided to fund raise for this noble cause. We welcome any gifts you could donate We will use these gifts as prizes for this year’s Christmas Raffle. The nicer the prizes the more tickets we shall sell!!! Please help us help the less fortunate this Christmas Ms Tania Sultana Librarian
