THE EDWARDIAN GAZETTE Message from the Headmaster Dear Parents and Community Members I am pleased to advise you that the College is undertaking a pilot project this year with Fronter. This is, indeed, an exciting IT initiative which is designed to enhance education for our students in so many ways. In January this year, ten teachers will be involved in a training programme offered by Fronter’s consultants from overseas. The 2 year groups selected for the trial are years 9 and 12: the start of O’levels and IB respectively. Fronter is a learning platform used by millions of teachers and learners, at thousands of learning institutions around the world. The platform is made up of almost 100 easy to use web-based tools developed in close cooperation with its users. This platform is continuously developing according to the evolving needs of the educational community. Fronter combines tools within the following areas: PERSONAL WORK & PORTFOLIO Personal Learning Environment (PLE). E-portfolio and personal working area. SETUP & ADMINISTRATION Solid administration tools for large scale installations. PUBLISHING Learning content management system (LCMS). Production, management and publishing of content. TEACHING & LEARNING Learning Management System (LMS). Customised learning, assessment and follow-up. COLLABORATION & COMMUNICATION Intranet functionality for efficient collaboration and communication. I will keep you updated on a regular basis. However, in the meantime, you may like to visit the website below for further information. http://fronter.info/downloads/Fronter_Brochure_UK_lowres.pdf Best wishes Michael Chittenden Headmaster
THE EDWARDIAN GAZETTE Gazette News Dear Parents, Students & Community Members The term has come to an end and so have our weekly online Gazette Issues for this year. It gives me great pleasure in knowing how much the new design is being appreciated. I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank all those who contributed in any way to make this publication such a great success. Every week, there is so much happening at the College and it is practically impossible to publish every thing on the Gazette. Knowing that this might have caused some disappointment, we have decided to publish a special Issue next week (Gazette 12). This special edition will be a bumper Issue featuring most of the pictures and articles which were never published, together with advertisements from our sponsors, Trivia, Sports and more. Once again I wish to remind all parents and community members that for all Gazettes and for the special edition Gazette 12, spaces are available for advertisements. The first advertisement is free of charge., with one term booking. Kindly send artwork by not later then Thursday 23 December. Please follow this link for SEC Gazette Advertising Price List. Thank you. Wishing you all the very best for this Festive Season Maria L Fenech Marketing Executive

THE EDWARDIAN GAZETTE Articles OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY – (6)
Young Employees On 2 August 1987, a 14 year-old schoolboy by the name of Joseph was fatally electrocuted while getting a mobile kiosk ready for the Lija village feast. A marble plaque in his memory, set in the playing field’s boundary wall, a few metres down from that lovely Belvedere, bears witness to the tragic loss. Only God knows what his parents must have gone through 24 years ago. Can Time completely heal all wounds? I wonder how many mothers and fathers are familiar with Legal Notice 91 of the year 2000, Protection of Young Persons at Work Places Regulations, 2000. This oft-ignored piece of legislation can be read in its entirety at www.ohsa.org.mt/publications.asp but suffice it to say that employers must ensure that workers under 18 are:
Medically examined, and benefit, from a suitable and sufficient risk assessment of their workplace before employment commences.
Under normal circumstances, not allowed to work night duties and overtime. Cannot, under normal circumstances, be exposed to hazardous physical, chemical or biological agents.
Just before it’s time for our son to start his first summer job, the first thing my wife and I are going to do is pay a visit to the establishment concerned……………
