ST EDWARD’S COLLEGE BIRGU (CITTA VITTORIOSA) BRG 9039 MALTA, EUROPE www.stedwards.edu.mt

THE EDWARDIAN GAZETTE Message from the Headmaster Dear Parents and Community Members As you are aware, last Friday was an important day in the life of the College. We were, indeed, fortunate enough to have the Prime Minister (accompanied by the Minister of Education) officially open our new boarding facilities. Importantly, we have the full support of the Prime Minister who added that the initiative complemented Malta’s 2015 vision. Not surprisingly, local and international boarding will open up so many opportunities for the College.

The College opened in 1929 as a full boarding school, ironically commencing with 29 students: The foundation Students. However, like so many Colleges around the world, it was unable to sustain this component. However, there is now a growing trend (particularly in England), to educate international students within an English speaking environment. While we envisage a strong international market, the College plans to keep the boarding house numbers comparatively small.

THE EDWARDIAN GAZETTE Message from the Headmaster Article featured by TheTimesofMalta.com ‘The St Edward’s international boarding school in Vittoriosa was inaugurated by Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi this morning. The boarding school, which has 40 places, is the only one in Malta and takes in boys aged between 13 and 18 and girls aged between 16 and 18. The boarding house is targeted at an international audience. The school used to accept boarders until the early 1990s. School bursar Sandro Bruno said the school’s administration had done its homework well and it found there were people who wanted to send their children to a boarding school, such as expatriates who worked in Libya and who might be unwilling to send their children to Libyan schools. John Portelli, the chairman of the board of governors, told timesofmalta.com that although it was not very common for people to send their children to a boarding school permanently in this day and age, there were situations where parents might need to be away from the country for a period of time. The school could handle such situations. Students could also board at the school for a short period of intense study. The main market was the international market and the school was offering the International Baccalaureate (IB), an alternative to the A level system which was increasingly being recognised by major universities abroad. Dr Gonzi, whose two sons used to be students at the college, said the school had an important role to play in the country as many of its former students were now in influential positions. It was an institution that had accompanied Malta’s history, he said. The Prime Minister said that education was one of the main assets of the country, since Malta’s main resource was human. He expressed satisfaction that the Maltese students who were being funded to go abroad to do their Ph D and Masters were obtaining excellent results.. Dr Gonzi said that St Edward’s aim of attracting international students fitted in with the government’s 2015 vision.’ Please click on this link to view the press coverage on-line.

Health The POWER OF GARLIC………

Garlic's health benefits and medicinal properties have long been known and it has been considered a herbal "wonder drug" for ages, with Facts……. Researchers have found references to garlic in Chinese texts dating back as far as 2,000 years before Christ…that means civilization has In ancient Greece, Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, used garlic for treating infections, wounds and intestinal disorders. Military surgeons in World War I, who didn't have modern antibiotics available to them, used garlic to cleanse wounds, combat infection Even today, most especially in places like the Soviet Union, garlic is still used to kill bacteria and fight infections. Some tests even show earned garlic the nickname ……The Russian Penicillin!! Uses of Garlic…… Since the 1940's scientific investigation focusing on garlic has proven that it possesses a stunning array of medicinal properties. It: ü Acts as a powerful antiseptic ü Fights infection and is one of the best natural antibiotics, ü Contains antioxidants that prevent cancer, ü Has the power to thin the blood, reducing clotting in high-risk heart patients, ü Lowers blood pressure, ü Can reduce cholesterol and also controls triglycerides, ü Stimulates the immune system, and acts as a decongestant and expectorant. …………………..Now that's what I call a health food!!!

Modern science has clearly shown through many studies that garlic is a powerful antibiotic and the body does not appear to build up resis entific papers written about the medicinal value of garlic since 1983 alone. In 1944, a chemist named C. Cavallito identified the stinky compound in garlic, called allicin, and demonstrated that it was a highly effec experts say, that makes all the difference. In most cases, they say you need merely eat a clove or two a day, cut up in salads or soups to enjoy its healing properties. However it mu mainly due to the disadvantage of garlic bad breath, even though something simple like eating fennel seeds right after helps to neutralize disappear within weeks.

The most significant recent discovery is that garlic also kills viruses. This means that the next time you feel a cold or flu coming on, add right!! If you do it early enough, you may not even get sick…. eat a clove of garlic at the first indication of a sore throat or the sniffles or a cold or flu…. All of these researchers stress firmly that garlic has absolutely no side effects of any kind. The only risk you can possibly run as a confirm But that is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the healing powers of this marvellous food….. Tips….Make your own……..

It's easy to flavour with garlic….. Just by adding a peeled clove or 2 to a bottle of vinegar or oil, and leaving it stand for 2-3 days, you en To make your own garlic salt, just bury 3-4 pressed garlic cloves in a half a cup of sea salt ideally. You can also add some ground pepper like to flavour soups, meats, and salads. Make your own home made garlic butter…. just add mashed or pressed garlic to softened butter. You can also add some of your favourit butter, and then you can always adjust to your taste next time! Happy Garlic eating and see you next time….
