South Asian Women Rising

Welcome to the August issue of SEEMA Magazine, where we celebrate the remarkable achievements and stories of South Asian women who inspire and lead with grace and determination.

As an immigrant in America and a South Asian woman in a leadership position, Kamala Harris’s journey resonates deeply with my own experiences. Her nomination is not just a political milestone; it is a personal victory for many of us who have faced and overcome significant challenges. The journey of carving out a space in a new country, dealing with stereotypes, and striving to make our voices heard is something many of us can relate to. Kamala’s heritage as the daughter of an Indian immigrant shines brightly, inspiring millions. Her mother, Shyamala Gopalan, an Indian-American biologist, laid the foundation for Kamala’s journey with her determination and dedication.

For the South Asian community, Kamala’s nomination symbolizes a significant stride toward inclusivity and

representation in the highest echelons of power. It is a proud moment, one that acknowledges our contributions to society and recognizes the diverse fabric of American identity. Her candidacy shatters stereotypes and opens doors for future generations, demonstrating that our voices matter and our stories are integral to the broader narrative.

For women, Kamala Harris’s ascent to this pivotal role represents a formidable challenge to the highest glass ceiling. It is a reminder of our collective strength, resilience, and the unwavering spirit that drives us to overcome barriers. Her journey serves as an inspiration, encouraging women to pursue their ambitions relentlessly and to believe in their ability to lead and effect change.

As we celebrate this historic moment, let us reflect on the path that has led us here and the road that lies ahead. Kamala Harris’s nomination is not just a political milestone; it is a cultural and social triumph that will echo for generations. It is a call to action for all of us to support, uplift, and empower each other in the pursuit of our dreams.

On the cover this month, we are thrilled to feature the immensely talented designer Payal Singhal. We delve into her journey, exploring her inspirations, challenges, and triumphs. We highlight her contributions to fashion and also celebrate the broader narrative of South Asian women making waves in various fields. Payal Singhal and Kamala Harris, though from different fields, share a common thread in their narratives: they both epitomize the breaking of barriers and the celebration of South Asian heritage.

We hope you enjoy this issue and find inspiration in the pages that follow. Together, let us continue to uplift, support, and celebrate each other as we forge new paths and achieve new heights.

A Journey Through the Smoky Mountains

Discover the stunning landscapes, hidden gems, and unique experiences that make the Smoky Mountains a must-visit destination.

Asian American International Film Festival

Experience the first and longest-running festival dedicated to celebrating the moving image work by media artists of Asian descent.

A Journey Through the Smoky Mountains

The drive through the winding roads of The Smoky Mountains was filled with lush greenery and breathtaking views. The destination was a cozy cabin perched on the edge of the Appalachian Mountains, offering an unparalleled view of the sprawling landscape below. The cabin’s rustic charm and the serene beauty of the surroundings was a great way to begin the three-day trip. The porch provided a perfect vantage point to soak in the majesty of the Smokies, with rolling hills and dense forests stretching as far as the eye could see.

Explore Gatlinburg

Gatlingurg is a quaint town nestled in the heart of the Smoky Mountains. Stroll down the bustling streets, lined with charming shops, artisanal boutiques, and cozy cafes. The aroma of freshly made fudge and caramel apples wafting through the air will tempt you at every turn. The Log Cabin Pancake House is

the perfect place to stop for some great food served in the famed Southern hospitality. For adventure lovers, there are a host of places and activities for the young ones. Stop by the Gatlinburg SkyLift Park, where a scenic chairlift ride takes you to the top of Crockett Mountain. The SkyBridge, the longest pedestrian suspension bridge in North America, offers stunning panoramic views of the mountains. Walking across it is an exhilarating experience, with the glass panels in the middle providing a thrilling glimpse of the valley below.

Adventure in Pigeon Forge

The lively town is known for its family-friendly attractions. The most famous amongst them being Dollywood - the renowned theme park owned by country music legend Dolly Parton. The park’s mix of thrilling rides, entertaining shows, and Appalachian culture makes for a fun-filled day. Make sure to visit the Titanic Museum, an impressive replica of the

ill-fated ship. Walking through the museum, you’ll be transported back in time, experiencing the grandeur and tragedy of the Titanic through detailed exhibits and artifacts. The museum’s interactive elements, like touching an iceberg and feeling the chilly 28-degree water, add a poignant touch to the experience.

Cultural Immersion in Cherokee

A short drive will take you across the state line to North Carolina. While there, drop by the Oconaluftee Indian Village. It’s a living history museum where Cherokee artisans demonstrate traditional crafts like pottery, basket weaving, and beadwork. It certainly is a humbling experience to learn about their heritage, rich history and resilience of the Cherokee people.

Picnic by the Tuckasegee River

To have an immersive experience while you drive all around the Smoky Mountain download the GuideAlong app which guides and informs based on your GPS location. There are numerous idyllic spots that invite for a perfect picnic. If you have carried your own grub, stop beside the scenic Tuckasegee River. Find a perfect spot along the riverbank, spread out your blanket and enjoy a leisurely afternoon surrounded by nature. The gentle sound of the flowing river, coupled with the chirping of birds, creates a peaceful ambiance. Dip your feet in the cool, clear water and skip stones across the surface, relishing the simple joys of life.

A Pitstop at Buc-ee’s

As the Smoky Mountains adventure draws to a close,

make a memorable pit stop at Buc-ee’s, the famous convenience store on your way out. Known for its clean restrooms, wide selection of snacks, and quirky souvenirs, Buc-ee’s will not disappoint. Stack up on their famous Beaver Nuggets, jerky, and other delectable treats for the road. The sheer size of the store and the variety of items available made it an entertaining gas station stop.

The serene beauty of the Appalachian Mountains, the charm of Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, the cultural richness of Cherokee, and the simple pleasures of a riverside picnic makes the trip truly special.

Asian American International Film Festival

TThe Asian American International Film Festival (AAIFF) is the first and longest-running festival dedicated to showcasing the moving image work by media artists of Asian descent for and about the Asian diaspora experience. The Festival takes place in New York City from August 1-11.

Host the Perfect Summer Party

Celebrate Summer with the Perfect Outdoor Gathering

Host the Perfect Summer Party

As the sun stretches its warm fingers across the sky and the air fills with the aroma of freshly cut grass, it’s clear: summer is here. And what better way to celebrate the season than hosting a memorable outdoor gathering? Whether planning a laidback backyard barbecue or a lively summer soirée, here are some tips and ideas to ensure your event is an absolute hit.

Setting the Scene

Creating the right atmosphere is crucial in setting the stage for your summer gathering. Start by considering your space:

1. Arrange seating areas that encourage mingling and conversation.

2. Use outdoor rugs, throw pillows, and string lights to create a festive ambiance.

3. Remember to provide shade options like umbrellas or a pop-up canopy to keep guests cool and comfortable.

Refreshing Libations

Nothing says summer like a refreshing drink in hand. For that extra touch, create a DIY drink station with infused water, lemonade, iced tea, garnishes, and fresh herbs. Consider crafting a signature cocktail or mocktail that complements your party theme—a fruity sangria or a zesty mojito can instantly elevate the party spirit.

Summery Decor

Incorporate seasonal elements into your decor to enhance the summer vibe. Bright, cheerful colors like turquoise, coral, and yellow can be echoed in tablecloths, napkins, and floral arrangements. Natural elements such as seashells, driftwood, or potted plants can add texture and interest to your tabletops.

Delicious Bites

While food is undoubtedly a centerpiece of any summer gathering, it doesn’t have to be complicated. Opt for a casual buffetstyle setup with grilled favorites like juicy burgers, marinated chicken skewers, and fresh seafood. Accompany these with various vibrant salads, grilled vegetables, and dips. Remember to cater to dietary preferences and provide vegetarian or vegan options.

Finish off on a sweet note with desserts that celebrate the flavors of summer. Serve a refreshing fruit salad or set out a make-yourown ice cream sundae bar with various toppings. For a whimsical touch, consider offering toasted marshmallows for DIY s’mores—an activity that brings out the kid in everyone.

Set the mood with a carefully curated playlist that complements the laidback atmosphere of your gathering.

Choose upbeat tunes for mingling and dining, then transition to mellower melodies as the evening winds down. Alternatively, consider hiring a local musician or DJ to provide live entertainment and keep the energy high.

Last but certainly not least, the key ingredient to any successful gathering is you, the host. Greet guests warmly, introduce new acquaintances, and ensure everyone feels welcomed and included. Be attentive to guests’ needs, whether refilling drinks or guiding them to the nearest restroom. A gracious host sets the tone for a memorable and enjoyable experience.

With these tips and ideas, you’re well on your way to hosting the perfect summer party or barbecue. Remember, it’s not just about the food or the decor—it’s about creating an atmosphere where laughter flows freely, friendships deepen, and memories are made under the warm embrace of the summer sun. So, fire up the grill, pour a cold drink, and savor every moment of your summer celebration. Cheers to a season filled with joy, laughter, and good times!

An Artist’s Tale

Jayanthi Moorthy, founder of Aksara, reflects on her 25-year career dedicated to promoting Indian cultural heritage and challenging stereotypes.

In a bustling studio in Brooklyn’s Bushwick neighborhood, a distinguished artist, designer, and educator with over 25 years experience in the creative industry, reflects on her journey. Jayanthi Moorthy, the founder of Aksara, has dedicated her career to promoting Indian cultural heritage, challenging stereotypes, and fostering a deeper understanding of Indian traditions.

When asked about her immigration experience from India to the United States in 2004 and its influence on her perspective, Moorthy shared a profound metaphor. “It’s always like the story where if there’s a little ant walking on the street, and you lift the ant and make it see the world, it realizes that, oh, wow, I’m walking in a rectangle, or I’m walking in a circle. It’s the same thing with Indian culture. When you’re in the culture, you just go with the flow. But when you come out of it, you realize how much you miss and how much of that culture seeps into every aspect and decisions you make.”

Her journey was not without challenges. “I came here with all the ties I had in India, working as a designer and setting up my own firm there. I had to restart everything over. But after about three to four years of working in the industry, I decided to be an artist because there was a lot of impressions I had in my mind that I wanted to let out.”

Her transition from designer to artist was fueled

by a need for deeper expression. “Being an artist, if you like something, or you’re passionate about something, you have to get deeper into it. For me, it was a passion to use ephemeral materials and draw on the floor. To the Western world, that was so different.”

To connect with her roots and gain deeper insights, Moorthy returned to India for residencies. “I studied the concept of rangoli and the practice of kolam, a daily art form in the south which, is often confused with rangoli. They are different platforms.“

Her expertise as an instructional designer and 3D animator also influenced her art and educational approach. “Initially, I wanted to take a break from digital work. But eventually, my art became a digital installation combining ephemeral materials with digital media. One of my installations, ‘Control Mind,’ explores the Hindu philosophy that everything is connected, just like AI. Actions here have counteractions elsewhere,” she explains.

In founding Aksara, Moorthy aimed to address gaps in cultural education. “There was a dearth of good Indian education programs in New York. They were often stereotyped and superficial. Aksara aims to bring a universal love for the culture, addressing cultural racism and underexposed aspects of Indian heritage.”

Balancing tradition with contemporary relevance is a key goal. “Aksara means imperishable. We create a community of learners, mixing visual arts, literary arts, and performance arts. For example, we used kite-making workshops to celebrate Indian independence, highlighting sustainability and intercommunity cooperation in India.”

Her advice to other artists and educators is to focus on aesthetic awareness and social engagement. “Learn the tools and delve deeper into the function of the art. Use art as a tool for social engagement. For instance, we created prayer manifestos with the Tibetan community in Queens, allowing them to express their emotions and feelings about Tibet.”

Moorthy’s future goals for Aksara include expanding digital education products and multi-generational programs. “We released a digital product about Indian monuments, teaching middle school kids about lesser-known monuments beyond the Taj Mahal. We also promote creative aging, working with older adults on activities like kolam, which is beneficial for brain activity,” she informs.

Jayanthi Moorthy’s journey is a testament to the transformative power of art in promoting cultural appreciation and literacy. Through Aksara, she continues to bridge the gap between tradition and contemporary society, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of Indian culture.

Championing Mental Health and Social Equity

Gita Murthy is an esteemed licensed clinical social worker with a master’s in public health, who has spent over two decades reshaping the landscape of public systems with a fervent dedication to social equity and mental health accessibility. Her consulting firm, Gita Murthy Consulting, stands as a beacon of hope for communities, breaking down barriers and empowering individuals through innovative solutions.

The Birth of Gita Murthy Consulting

Reflecting on the inception of her consulting firm, Murthy shares, “I spent about 18 years inside governments and really saw the bureaucracy that kept happening over and over again. I started to ask myself, is what we’re doing actually helping? Are we able to move the needle?” This introspection led her to a pivotal role in launching the Center for Strategic Partnerships,

an innovative collaboration between the government and the philanthropic sector. “The mission was to get government out of ‘just business as usual’ and get them to think outside the box,” she explains. “Philanthropy does a really good job at sparking innovation. Their money is more flexible, and they don’t have as many regulations, allowing us to do proof of concept on things and see how it moves the needle.”

Identifying and Addressing Unique Needs

Gita Murthy Consulting is dedicated to understanding and addressing the unique needs of vulnerable populations. Murthy emphasizes the importance of listening to the community: “If we don’t listen to the people who actually have the problem, then we’re doing a big disservice. If we’re not finding out from the ground, we’re making assumptions about what we think they need.” She has developed mechanisms to pay community members for their participation in planning and created job positions where individuals act as ambassadors to their communities. “Bringing people with lived experience to the conversation

adds credibility to the programs we’re developing,” Murthy asserts.

Transformational Successes and Guiding Principles

Murthy’s career is marked by numerous successful transformations in public systems. One of her recent accomplishment includes launching telehealth services for all children in collaboration with health plans, schools, and the County Department of Mental Health. “Kids now in schools can get up to eight sessions of therapy through telehealth, regardless of their immigration status or insurance,” she highlights.

Her approach to system redesign is guided by collaboration and leveraging diverse expertise. Working with the former Director of Mental Health, Murthy helped establish a public partnership for wellbeing with UCLA. “We brought in academic partners to build the bridge between community and academia. It’s important to recognize what you’re good at and what you need help on,” she notes. This collaboration led to exploring community participatory evaluation, where the community determines what they deem effective.

Overcoming Implementation Challenges

Implementing trauma-informed, resiliency-based strategies in challenging environments presents unique obstacles. “People don’t want change. It’s hard when you’re trying to implement new protocols amidst other pressing concerns, like he pandemic procedures,” Murthy observes. She acknowledges that since COVID, people have struggled to mentally and emotionally return to normalcy. “Our habits have changed, and our parasympathetic nervous systems are struggling to manage that. The biggest

challenge is people’s bandwidth for more information or new initiatives.”

A Vision for the Future

Gita Murthy’s work continues to drive transformational change in public systems, with a focus on mental health and social equity. Her innovative approaches, commitment to listening to the community, and ability to bridge gaps between sectors have made a significant impact. As she looks to the future, Murthy remains dedicated to empowering communities and ensuring that mental health resources are accessible to all. “So much of my job is translating between worlds, getting people to see the bigger picture,” she says. “If we don’t keep the human element in our work, it loses its meaning.”

Through her tireless efforts, Gita Murthy exemplifies the power of innovation and collaboration in creating sustainable, impactful solutions for vulnerable populations.

Navigate the Social Seas with Style

In the ever-evolving landscape of social interactions, good manners remain the lighthouse guiding us through the choppy waters of modern life. Whether navigating a first date, hosting a soirée, or simply trying to figure out how much to tip, mastering these subtle yet crucial etiquettes can make all the difference between an awkward encounter and a seamless social triumph.

The Art of Tipping: Appreciation in Every Bill Tipping, that delicate dance between gratitude and awkward math, is an art form. In restaurants, the standard 15-20% remains a solid benchmark for showing appreciation to your servers. However, if your dining experience has been nothing short of extraordinary—perhaps the chef deserves a nod, too—

consider going the extra mile. For services like valet parking or salon treatments, a couple of dollars can go a long way in showing your appreciation for the extra mile they’ve gone for you.

Arriving Alone: Solo is the New Social

In a world where solo outings are acceptable and celebrated, arriving alone at social gatherings is no longer a faux pas. Embrace your independence with confidence; you are the architect of your social destiny. When mingling, engage others with genuine curiosity, and remember that the best conversations often begin with a smile and a simple introduction. You might make a new friend or discover a shared passion over hors d’oeuvres.

Mastering the Art of Hosting: The Host(ess) with the Most(est)

Hosting is akin to playing a symphony conductor— every detail harmoniously contributes to the overall experience. From the moment your guests step through the door, make them feel like they’ve entered a sanctuary of warmth and hospitality. A gracious host anticipates needs before they arise, from

dietary restrictions to offering a cozy corner for quiet conversation. And don’t forget the golden rule: never let a guest’s glass go empty!

Navigating the Dating Dance: Romance in the Age of Apps

Ah, modern dating—the terrain of swipes, texts, and (hopefully) sparks flying. Whether it’s a first date or a hundredth rendezvous, manners remain the foundation of successful courtship. Arrive on time (fashionably late is so last century), dress to impress (comfortably chic is always a win), and be present now (yes, put away the phone). A genuine compliment and a courteous gesture still go a long way in making a lasting impression. That’s a good segue into how dating has been digitally transformed by technology. In an era dominated by screens, navigating digital etiquette is as essential as knowing which fork to use at a formal dinner. When engaging online, remember that behind every avatar is a natural person with feelings. Practice kindness in your comments, respect privacy in your posts, and always ask permission before tagging others in photos. In emails and texts, brevity is the soul of wit—keep it concise yet thoughtful.

As we journey through the complexities of modern life, let us not forget that manners are more than rules— they are the threads that weave the fabric of our social tapestry. Whether you’re tipping generously, arriving solo with confidence, hosting graciously, navigating the dating scene, or mastering digital decorum, remember that every interaction is an opportunity to leave a positive mark on the world. So, let’s raise a glass (mindfully filled by a thoughtful host) to the art of modern manners—may we all navigate the social seas with style, grace, and a touch of bubbly charm.

Beauty with a Purpose

South Asian women are upping the ante in terms of making the case for wellness and beauty with their innovative range of products.

We profile six women who are shaking things up in the space of grooming, wellness and cosmetics as they bring their South Asian sensibilities to the forefront.

Sarah Sophy Thomas, founder, Bili Beauty

When she was just two years old, Sarah Sophy Thomas, used to sneak into her parent’s room to wear her mother’s makeup. While that started her initial fascination, as she grew up, she discovered that there were not many products that catered to brown skin in America. For someone with South Indian roots in Kerala, she was born and raised in California, she started Bili Beauty to celebrate the art of makeup inspired by India. Her makeup line includes Creamy Matte Lipsticks in shades like

Gutsy Gudiya and Adventurous Akka, among many others and an ‘Eyes of India eyeshadow palette’ that has ten pigmented colorful shades, an ode to the country’s vibrancy. The brand makes a compelling case for inclusivity and is a nod to her roots.

Deepica Mutyala, founder, Live Tinted

Exemplifying the concept of idea to impact, Deepica Mutyala, founder, Live Tinted started her beauty career in 2015 when she started inclusive makeup tutorials on YouTube. She went viral for a video where she used lipstick below her eyes to cover dark circles and proverbially there has been no looking back from then. She then went on to launch her first beauty product, Huestick that can be used

for the eyes, lips, and cheeks for color and even as a color corrector when used gently on dark circles, hyperpigmentation, and dark spots. The product works both as a skincare and makeup option as it has hyaluronic acid, squalene, and Vitamin C and Vitamin E. As a beauty influencer, Mutyala, has been able to make the case for representation and inclusivity of the South Asian diaspora.

Taran and Bunny Ghatrora of Blume

The sister duo that started an organization that is all about skin, body and period care, Taran and Bunny Ghatrora of Blume have managed to start a conversation around normalizing acne and redefining skin care. With a mission to provide clean skincare solutions, the sisters are on a mission to destigmatize women’s health. Learning from their own skincare mistakes, they decided to take things in their hands. They launched a slew of products that aim to make the case for healthy skin rather than perfect skin. From Acne oil, Mineral SPF sunscreen, Milky fade serum, Meltdown Gel cream with ceramides, face wash, cramp oil, and period patches they have a range of products that are for women to feel good about themselves.

Priyanka Ganjoo, founder Kulfi Beauty

Armed with a computer engineering major degree, Priyanka Ganjoo, founder Kulfi Beauty knew that her calling was elsewhere. Her turning point came when she decided to pursue an MBA and was bitten by the entrepreneurship bug. And for someone who did not even wear makeup till she was in her late 20s, she started Kulfi, which celebrates her Indian heritage. The name itself comes from an Indian dessert and the ethos stemmed from making makeup all things fun and playful. From concealers, brow gels, eyeshadows, blushes and lipsticks, the brand has a whole range of products that are high performance, long lasting and inclusive.

Michelle Ranavat, founder, Ranavat

Michelle Ranavat, founder, Ranavat grew up in Wisconsin and started her eponymous beauty brand that uses ingredients from her roots in India as well as those locally sourced from across the world. A first generation South Asian American, Ranavat wanted to showcase a line of beauty products rooted in Indian traditions. She believes in unleashing the power of each ingredient in her products and her science background helps her do this right. Her line of vegan and organic products include a brightening saffron serum (a product she swears by), hair serums, masques, creams, cleansers, facial polish and face mists.

Pritika Swarup, founder, Prakti Beauty

Growing up in Virginia Beach, Pritika Swarup’s memories of India happened during family trips to Lucknow. A former ramp model, she merged her American and Indian sensibilities, she started her brand Prakti when she was doing her financial economics at Columbia University. It helped that the interest in skincare was sown early as she grew up using homemade face masks that her mother made for her. Merging the concepts of Ayurveda with the clinical and science driven Western sensibilities she soft launched the brand in 2021 with Daria Myers, who had about 40 years of experience working at Estée Lauder. The product range includes Face Cleansers, Instant Glow Exfoliators, hydrating moisturizers, serums and more.

Embrace Balance: Integrating Ayurvedic Practices into Your Busy Lifestyle

In today’s fast-paced world, many assume that incorporating Ayurvedic practices into their lives requires radical changes and extreme measures. Sweta Vikram, an Ayurvedic Doctor, explains that Ayurveda, derived from the Sanskrit words “ayur” (life) and “veda” (science or knowledge), is essentially the science of life. Its fundamental principle is to maintain health and prevent illness by restoring balance in the body, mind, and consciousness through personalized diet, lifestyle practices, and herbal remedies. This holistic approach can be seamlessly integrated into modern lifestyles, helping individuals achieve harmony and well-being without upheaval.

Take a close look at your day and see how you can create buckets for a more balanced life without turning your life upside down.

1. Daily routine (Dinacharya): Dinacharya is the Sanskrit word for “daily routine” (‘din’ means day and ‘charya’ means to follow or close to). According to ayurveda, a daily routine utilizes our natural biological clock, per nature’s rhythm. In a nutshell, dinacharya is a simple, yet profound way to bring radical change to one’s physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing. How we begin our morning sets the tone for the rest of the day.

• Wake up early, ideally before sunrise.

• Practice oil pulling and tongue scraping for oral hygiene.

• Drink warm water to eliminate bowels as well as toxins.

• Practice yoga or light exercise in the morning.

• Meditate and do pranayama.

• Make a list of what you are grateful for.

2. Diet:

Ayurveda tells us that we should ideally eat to fill half our stomach, another one-fourth of the capacity should be kept for water, and the last quarter should be kept empty. When we eat excessively or eat too little, we mess around with our agni, the fire that’s responsible for digestion, assimilation, absorption, and transformation. Agni converts food in the form of energy,

which is responsible for all the vital functions of our body.

• Eat fresh, seasonal, and locally sourced foods.

• Pay attention to your cravings.

• Let lunch be your biggest meal as

that’s when the digestion is strongest.

• Listen to your true hunger, not just eye hunger.

• Avoid overeating.

• Include all six tastes in your meals: sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter, and astringent.

• Walk a minimum of 100 steps after every meal.

• Avoid heavy, late-night meals, and erratic meal timings.

• Eat with awareness in a calming environment.

• Drink warm water throughout the day.

• Avoid ice or any cold drinks as they extinguish the agni.

• Use spices like turmeric, ginger, and cumin in your cooking.

3. Sleep:

When we sleep, we heal. Ayurveda recognizes the importance of proper sleep for maintaining optimal health. Not getting enough sleep may lead to accidents, work mishaps, lowered productivity in the short-term along with irritability and impatience. Too little sleep can also leave you feeling tired to do the things you enjoy doing—be it in your personal life or professional life.

• According to the Ayurvedic clock, it’s best to get into bed before 10 pm and wake up before sunrise.

• Align your sleeping patterns with the cycles of the day and honor nature’s biorhythms. 6pm10pm is Kapha time of the evening when the mind starts to slow down and there is a natural dullness

induced in the body.

• Aim for 7-8 hours of sleep per night.

• Maintain sleep hygiene—try to sleep and wake at consistent times.

• Avoid electronic devices at least two hours before bedtime.

• Avoid sleeping in late unless you are sick or feeling exhausted.

• Massage your Crown Chakra for a few minutes to lower the mind chatter.

4. Stress management:

The stress is known as sahasa in Ayurveda. Sahasa by causing ojahksaya (loss of immunity) increases the susceptibility of the body to various diseases.

• Practice meditation or pranayama (breathing exercises)

• Consult with an Ayurvedic Doctor to confirm if Ayurvedic herbs like Ashwagandha or Brahmi or Tulsi are the right choice for you to combat stress.

• Incorporate self-massage (abhyanga) into your routine.

• Practice Yoga Nidra to nourish your nervous system.

• Take breaks from screens, disconnect from social media, make intentional pauses, do digital detox, and turn inward.

• Consider seasonal cleanses or fasts under the guidance of an ayurvedic expert.

5 Mind-body balance:

The 2024 Paris Olympics go vegan

60% plant-based meals for athletes, and sustainability. Winners here are human health and the planet.

The 2024 Paris Olympics are going more plantbased than ever by planning to serve 60 per cent of the meals as plant-based. The Olympics planning committee wanted to cut carbon emissions by 50 per cent and “this can be partly achieved by reducing the food miles, but it also meant reducing red meat, specifically” said Phillip Wurz, head of food and beverages at the Games. The goal is to feed up to 15,000 athletes and create 40,000 meals every day. The cuisines will be French, Asian, AfricanCaribbean and world cuisine.

helps athletes achieve optimal performance and faster recovery times.

In an era marked by environmental challenges and health crises, two studies highlight the profound impact of plant-based diets on human health and the planet. These studies provide compelling evidence for the benefits of reducing meat consumption and incorporating more plant-based foods.

The 2024 Games are making a major shift. Athletes like Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic and US Sprinter Kaylin Whitney thrive on plant-based diets. Indian cricketer Virat Kohli is another sportster who promotes plant-based diets as it

The first study, published in Nature Communications, reveals that replacing half of meat products with plant-based alternatives could reduce global agricultural pollution by a third by 2050 compared to 2020 levels. This decrease, alongside reductions in land use, could halt deforestation and protect ecosystems. Co-author Eva Wollenberg emphasizes that plant-based meats are crucial for achieving food security, climate

goals, and health and biodiversity objectives worldwide.

Another study, published in BMC Medicine, led by Sabrina Schlesinger of the German Diabetes Center, found that plantbased diets correlate with reduced risks of heart disease and type 2 diabetes. The research showed a 27% reduction in heart disease incidence and a 22% reduction in type 2 diabetes when processed meat was replaced with nuts or legumes.

These studies underscore the dual benefits of plant-based diets: promoting health and conserving the environment. And the shift towards plant-based diet at the Olympics seems like a win-win for all and a first in its history!

Blending Tradition and Innovation

The Visionary Journey of Payal Singhal in Modern Indian Fashion

In the effervescent world of South Asian fashion, Payal Singhal stands as a pioneering force. Renowned for her modern Indian occasion wear, Singhal’s innovative approach has led her to delve into crosscultural collaborations, most notably her recent partnership with American tech-enabled sneaker brand, Endstate. Her journey from a young girl with a passion for design to an internationally recognized fashion designer is a testament to her creativity, resilience, and vision.

“ The career happened in a very serendipitous way,” Singhal reminisces. “I was around 15 or 16 years old, and I entered a national contest in India, and I won. That kind of pushed me in the direction of fashion.” This unexpected victory led her to fashion school, where she honed her skills and nurtured her passion. By the age of 22, she had already launched her own label. Singhal’s brand was born out of a need to cater to young Indian women who, like her, did not grow up wearing traditional ethnic clothes but still cherished the vibrant colors, textiles, and embroideries of Indian fashion.

O ne of the most striking aspects of Singhal’s career is her ability to remain true to her roots while simultaneously embracing modern trends. Her collections are a blend of the old and the new, the traditional and the contemporary. This duality is evident in her signature styles, which often feature intricate hand embroidery and

traditional patterns alongside modern cuts and silhouettes. Inspiration for Singhal’s collections often stems from historical art and architecture. “The predominant inspiration in most of my collections has been Mughal art and architecture,” she explains. Collections like “Charbagh” and “Palace of Mirrors” are testaments to her fascination with historical patterns and structures. “I’ve taken a lot of inspiration from history,” she says. “Art and architecture play a very important role in my designs. The craftsmanship of our ancestors is so superior that I believe in reimagining rather than trying to improve upon it.”

H owever, Singhal’s creativity isn’t confined to Indian influences alone. Her work reflects a global tapestry, drawing inspiration from Mexico, Persia, Africa, and other regions rich in ethnic culture. This international perspective aligns perfectly with Endstate’s mission, which seeks to blend technology with fashion through collaborations with diverse artists worldwide. As a self-professed sneaker head, the opportunity to merge her love for sneakers with cutting-edge technology was irresistible. Singhal’s collaboration with Endstate is a perfect example of how she blends tradition with innovation. This partnership allows her to explore new territories in fashion by integrating technology into her designs. “Endstate is a brand that combines technology with fashion,” she explains. “Their business model is to collaborate with different artists from across the globe and different fields. So, when they reached out to us, I was super thrilled and honored. It was a moment of pride to be recognized by an international company wanting to collaborate,” Singhal recalls.

“Please don’t
trytoemulate somebody.
Trytobe authentic andoriginal, because that’s thewayto success.”

A mong her most successful designs is the Zendaya choli, inspired by traditional garba attire. “It’s one of our backless cholis. We’ve named it the Zendaya choli as an ode to her, because I love her style,” Singhal shares. The choli, first introduced in 2011 or 2012, didn’t gain much traction initially but later went viral due to its flattering fit and versatility. “The success of that choli was that it fit all sizes and made everybody look slim. We’ve done it for sizes ranging from extra small to triple XL, and we keep using it in every collection because the customer won’t let it go.”

S ignificant milestones have shaped Singhal’s brand, including her move to New York in 2004. “Living in New York for about six, seven years, and being engulfed in Western culture definitely changed the brand at its core,” she notes. This experience brought a new dimension to her designs, making them cooler and more fashionforward. It also helped establish the core signature of her brand, which blends traditional Indian elements with contemporary Western styles.

For Singhal, maintaining the brand’s core identity while mixing different cultural elements is crucial. “The brand started for a young generation of Indians or South Asians all over the world who didn’t grow up wearing ethnic clothes but love our textiles and embroideries,” she says. “Even if I’m taking inspiration from different cultures around the world, eventually the silhouette is modern India.” This approach has allowed her to create pieces that resonate with a global audience while staying true to her brand’s Indian roots.

R eturning to India in 2010 was another pivotal moment for Singhal. “When I went back to India, we also started all of our collaborations,” she notes. These collaborations not only expanded her product range but also put

her brand on the global map. “Now, we don’t just do clothes. We have so many products,” she adds. This expansion has allowed her to reach a broader audience and offer a diverse range of products, from clothing to accessories.

S inghal’s advice for aspiring fashion designers is grounded in authenticity and education. “Please don’t avoid the route of education,” she emphasizes. “And do some kind of training under a fashion house or a designer, because it’s very important to have real work experience before starting your own label. You’d rather learn at somebody else’s cost than your own.” She also stresses the importance of originality. “Please don’t try to emulate somebody. Try to be authentic and original, because that’s the way to success.”

E nsuring her collections speak to a global audience is a natural extension of her brand’s ethos. “The language of the brand is global,” Singhal asserts. “We use Indian crafts and textiles, but our point of view in terms of silhouette is global. It’s not been difficult for us at all to adapt.” This adaptability has been key to her success, allowing her to stay ahead in the highly competitive fashion industry. “Each day is a new day, and I’m always inspired,” she says gratefully. “Once we finish the sneaker line, we’re on to the next.”

L ooking ahead, Singhal continues to innovate and expand her brand. Upcoming projects include a hat line featuring visors and sun hats, and a collaboration on power banks with Urban. “We have a lot of interesting collaborations coming out,” she reveals. Additionally, she plans to work with artisans across India to produce unique products, showcasing their diversity. “We’re going into different states and seeing which craft is popular or most done in that state, then adapting it to a product I design and marketing it to everybody, all over India and the world.”

Kamala Harris: Poised to Make History

As the 2024 US Presidential election looms just months away, the political landscape is shifting dramatically. The recent debate and subsequent performance of President Joe Biden fueled by news about his deteriorating health, cast serious doubts on his ability to lead the nation. As the health of the President came under scrutiny and with a series of public gaffes, murmurs within Democratic circles and media corridors grew louder for him to step down.

Vice President Kamala Harris, the first woman, first Black, and first South Asian Vice President, had already shattered numerous glass ceilings. Now, she steps up as the Democratic nominee for President. If elected, she would shatter the highest of glass ceilings. She has already energized the Blue party, which had been justifiably skeptical about another term for President Biden due to his advancing age and recent health issues. As an attorney, Kamala faces a Republican candidate who has grappled with legal troubles and convictions. Her candidacy has revitalized the Democrats, as evidenced by a remarkable surge in donations, raising $100 million in less than two days.

Biden’s Struggles and the Rising Clamor

The first presidential debate held in June was a critical moment for Biden. His lackluster performance, which he attributed to exhaustion, led to increased scrutiny. His subsequent public appearances were marred by notable gaffes, such as confusing Ukrainian President Zelensky with Russian President Putin and referring to Vice President Harris as “Vice President Trump.” These incidents bolstered the Republican narrative of Biden’s declining health and capability, leading to intensified calls for a younger, more vigorous candidate.

Prominent figures, including actor George Clooney, added their voices to this clamor. Clooney’s op-ed in the New York Times, urging Biden to step aside, reflected a growing concern within the Democratic Party. Ultimately, the decision was made to support Kamala Harris as the new leader heading into the election.

The Case for Kamala Harris

As the Democratic nominee, Kamala Harris must now demonstrate that she has the credentials and support to claim the presidency.

• Her Tenure as Vice President: Harris’s term as Vice President has been marked by significant challenges and responsibilities. She has been a key player in addressing issues such as immigration reform,

SHE HAS ALREADY ENERGIZED THE BLUE PARTY.

voting rights, and COVID-19 response. However, her tenure has not been without criticism. Some have questioned her handling of the immigration crisis and her ability to lead on complex policy issues.

• Public Perception: Public opinion of Harris is mixed. While she enjoys strong support among the Democratic base, particularly among women and minority groups, she also faces significant opposition from Republican voters and skepticism from independents. Her ability to unify the party and appeal to a broader electorate will be crucial in her campaign for the presidency.

The South Asian Connection Harris’s candidacy holds special significance for the South Asian community. As the daughter of an Indian mother and a Jamaican father, she embodies the multicultural fabric of America. For many South Asians, her rise to the highest echelons of American politics is a source of immense pride and inspiration.

• Cultural Impact: Harris’s connection to her Indian heritage has resonated deeply within the South Asian community. Her use of Tamil phrases, celebration of Indian festivals, and acknowledgment of her Indian roots have endeared her to many. As the Democratic nominee, her candidacy marks a historic moment for the South Asian diaspora, symbolizing their growing influence in American society.

•Political Mobilization: Harris’s candidacy could galvanize South Asian voters, who have traditionally been a diverse and politically active

group. Her background and story might inspire greater political participation and support from this community, which could be pivotal in key battleground states.

The Road Ahead

The coming months will be critical for the Democratic Party. As Kamala Harris steps up as the presidential nominee, the party faces both opportunities and challenges. Her tenure as Vice President provides a foundation, but she will need to address public concerns and demonstrate her capability to lead the nation.

With Biden stepping down and Harris taking the lead, will she be able to rally the party and the electorate around her? These questions will shape the Democratic strategy as the election approaches.

For now, all eyes are on Kamala Harris, watching to see if she can seize this pivotal moment in American history.

There is no denying the fact that there is nothing more comforting than a bowl of hot currysoupy noodles. Whether it is a pleasant spring morning or a summer afternoon or even a rainy evening, a nutritious bowl of noodles is sure to keep you satiated. A much-loved dish of Burmese origin, Khow Suey is a one pot dish that is a picture of vibrant color, delectable flavors and multiple textures. “The word “Khow Suey” itself is derived from the Burmese word “khaukswè,” which refers to noodles served in a broth or simply rice noodles. Over time, this dish became popular is several Asian countries including India, where it has been adapted to suit regional tastes and native flavors giving rise to a plethora of variations” says Shailendra Singh, Corporate Chef, Pride Hotels Group. He further adds that the origins of Khow Suey can be traced back to the Shan (Southeast Asian) people of Burma, who are known for their distinct culinary traditions. It is believed that the dish was influenced by Chinese and Indian culinary elements, reflecting the diverse cultural influences in the region.

INGREDIENTS

ACCORDING TO SHAILENDRA SINGH, THE KEY ELEMENTS OF KHOW SUEY TYPICALLY INCLUDE:

• Noodles: the most commonly used is the egg noodles even though rice noodles are also be used in some variations.

• Broth: A flavorful coconut milkbased broth forms the base of the dish. This broth is usually rich and creamy, flavored with spices and sometimes with a touch of fish sauce or shrimp paste for depth.

• Protein: The dish can include a variety of protein such as chicken, beef, or shrimp, which is cooked and added to the broth.

• Condiments and Garnishes: Khow Suey is served with a variety of condiments and garnishes such as fried garlic, fried onions, chopped cilantro, boiled eggs, lime wedges, chili flakes, and sometimes crispy fried noodles.

Regional Influences
