We salute all those who serve others...

Needing or wanting help is never a sign of weakness. In fact, it's the opposite. It takes great courage to ask for help. You are not alone.

There are dozens of non-profit groups that are ready to lend a hand. Some organizations are there for you in a crisis. Organizations, like the Guadalupe County Children's Advocacy Center, Bluebird's Hope, the Christian Cupboard and Thriving Hearts Crisis Center, are just a few of groups that come to mind when you think about crisis response. They literally are helping people put the pieces of their lives back together, and begin their journey towards a new kind of wholeness. The work that these types of organizations perform provides a lifeline to people in need.

There are also a number of other non-profit groups that exist to enhance the quality of life for people in this community and

beyond. There's a long list of these organizations as well, including Teatro de Artes de Juan Seguin, the TLU Community Music Academy, the Texas Agricultural Education & Heritage Center, Seguin Youth Services and many, many others. There are also large organizations, like Guadalupe Regional Medical Center (GRMC) and Texas Lutheran University (TLU), that provide a host of services to this community. They are not necessarily charities, but they both have charitalbe foundations that help to support their work. TLU offers a first-class eduation to its students, but it also engages and supports this community in a variety of meaningful ways. GRMC is the only city-county owned hospital in the state of Texas. Its Guadalupe Regional Medical Foundation (GRMF) helps the hospital provide quality care and other services within the medical community. There's a good chance that the hospital's foundation has touched your life in some way.

Story by Darren Dunn

All of the organizations featured in this resource guide bring a positive light into this world. Some of them shine that light on you during your darkest hour. Some of them lift you up and help you transition to a better place. While others are there to make sure that the light that they shine not only warms your heart, but also feeds your mind, body and soul.

We're excited about this first ever Non-Profit Resource Guidebook. We're certain there will be some organizations left out of this inaugural edition. If you know an organization that needs to be added, please reach out to me, and I'll personally see to it that we include them in next year's guide. Meanwhile, we hope this will be an important tool for this community. This is a way for all of us to stay connected. If there is a need, there's likely an organization out there providing that service. This guide may also shine the light on potential gaps in services as well. We also hope to share with you more ways that you can leave a legacy of support to some of these charities. Organizations, like the Seguin Area Community Foundation and the United Way can help you with that.

I want to end by thanking the Guadalupe County Fair Association. Their idea, for a Non-Profit Expo to be held each April, was really what got us thinking about the need for an annual resource guide focusing on the social and community services available in the Seguin and Guadalupe County areas. •

Tbeneficiary charity make

beneficiary charity YOUR How to make a

he non-profit groups featured in this guidebook all depend on the generosity of this community. They are all good stewards of the donations that are given to them, and that money allows them to provide much needed services here locally.

Part of creating this guide was to provide an annual resource for people looking for services, but we also wanted to make sure that the charities were better connected with the overall community. That includes better connections with potential donors.

Giving to charity can be a rewarding endeavor that makes a difference in the lives of people in need. Many people donate throughout their lives, and some people may want to impart a more lasting legacy by continuing to support a charity even after they have passed away.

Incorporating a charity into an estate plan is a great way to continue giving after you pass away. Individuals may not know how to make charities beneficiaries in their wills. A financial planner, attorney or accountant can answer the more complex questions individuals have about naming charities as beneficiaries in a will.

In the meantime, this general guide can serve as a solid foundation for individuals who want to give back in their wills.

Most people think of beneficiaries as loved ones, but a beneficiary can be any person or entity one chooses to leave money to, including nonprofit organizations. It’s relatively the same process to name a charity as a beneficiary as it is an individual. According to the resource Trust & Will, first identify the charity that will be supported, including getting its Employer Identification Number or Taxpayer Identification Number. Next, determine which type of gift to make, which may be a predetermined financial contribution, a gift of property, or other assets like stocks. For large donations like real estate or cars, it may be best to contact the charity in advance to ensure they are able to accept such gifts. Finally, be sure to include your wishes in an estate plan. A qualified attorney can help clients draft a will that spells out their wishes in detail.

Keep in mind that charities also can be named as beneficiaries on life insurance policies or individual retirement accounts. They also can be listed on bank accounts. Again, people are urged to discuss all options with estate planners to ensure their plans fully reflect their wishes.

When naming a charity as a beneficiary, it can be wise to inform family members and other beneficiaries so no one is caught off guard upon your death. This way the charitable gift is not held up by delays in executing the will. •

3 strategies to mental health protect your

your mental health

Plus Mental health services avaILable in Seguin

Improving one's overall health and maintaining that health over the long haul can have a profound impact on quality of life. For example, the Harvard Medical School notes that regular exercise can slow the natural decline in physical performance that occurs as people age. That means routine exercise can serve as something like a fountain of youth that allows people to keep their cardiovascular fitness, metabolism and muscle function on par with their younger counterparts.

When attempting to improve long-term health, it's important that people emphasize mental health as much as they do their physical health. The Anxiety &

Depression Association of America notes the importance and effectiveness of preventive efforts in relation to depression and anxiety. In regard to mental health, prevention efforts can function in much the same way that exercise serves physical health. Routine exercise helps people to maintain healthy weights, reducing their risk for various conditions and diseases. Preventive efforts designed to improve mental health can significantly reduce a person's risk for anxiety and depression.

Various techniques and strategies can be utilized to promote mental health, and these three are simple and highly effective.

12

1. Get enough sleep

According to the Primary Care Collaborative, a not-for-profit member organization dedicated to advancing an effective and efficient health system, sleep and mental health are intimately related. Sleep loss can contribute to emotional instability. The amygdala is the part of the brain responsible for humans' emotional responses. When an individual does not get enough sleep, his or her amygdala goes into overdrive, leading to more intense emotional reactions. The prefrontal cortex is another part of the brain that needs sufficient sleep to function properly. Without it, the prefrontal cortex, which is integral to impulse control, cannot function properly. Adults can speak with their physicians about how much sleep they should be getting each night. Those needs change as individuals age.

2. Eat a balanced diet

A balanced, healthy diet doesn't just benefit the waistline. According to the ADAA, a balanced diet that includes protein, healthy non-saturated fats, fiber, and some simple carbohydrates can reduce the likelihood that

mental health issues like fatigue, difficulty concentrating and irritability will arise during the day.

3. Volunteer in your community

Use this non-profit guidebook to find volunteer opportunities. A study published in the Journal of Happiness Studies found that people who volunteered in the past were more satisfied with their lives and rated their overall health as much better than people who didn't volunteer. Perhaps the most noteworthy finding in the study was that people who began volunteering

with lower levels of well-being tended to get the biggest boost from volunteering. Volunteering provides opportunities to socialize, which can help ward off the loneliness that can sometimes contribute to anxiety and depression.

Mental health is important, and protecting it should be part of everyone's health care regimen. If you need help, ask for it. There are several local organizations that provide mental health services and support. That list includes the Teddy Buerger Center at GRMC, Guadalupe Valley Christian Counseling Center and NAMI. You can find contact information for each of these organizations in this resource guide. •
