Christian Cupboard in dire need of food DONATIONS

(Seguin) – Food donations are needed today over at the Christian Cupboard.

Regina Lee heads up the non-profit food pantry and is calling on all residents to help restock its shelves. She says an uptick in clients this past week has them scrambling for food.

“In two days, 114 people and so that’s kind of unusual so that’s a lot of people and you didn’t anticipate those two days being that busy so if you can imagine if the numbers keep up like that, no this, no that – no tuna, no mac and cheese, no canned chicken, a lot of things we were out of. The milk and eggs – we can kind of adjust with that because we do purchase that weekly,” said Lee.

Lee says the public call for donations will help the cupboard as it struggles to get through the remainder of this month.

“We are really out of vegetables, a lot of things at this point. People donate all the time. So, I’m asking Seguin to step up and get up and get out and show out and help me supply till the end of month. We are expecting a large truck but it’s at the end of the month and it’s not even the 10th so we are going to be scuffing until we get to this large truck,” said Lee.

Lee says a growing community means more people and hopes the community continues to give year-round.

Local woman helps to empower local students

(Seguin) – Being named the 2023 Guadalupe County Distinguished Young Woman is more than just earning a title. It also comes with the responsibility of serving others –– at least that’s been the case for Seguin High School Junior Taelor Jo Krueger. Since Krueger won the contest better known in this area as Junior Miss this past March, she has been making an impact by rolling out the official platform for the program “Be Your Best Self.”

The “Be Your Best Self,” nationwide AJM effort works to reinforce self-esteem and personal responsibility in young people.

Krueger says the outreach efforts’ recipients were a group of fifth graders at Koennecke Elementary School.

“The experience was great. The fifth graders ended up loving it. I actually got invited by the ACE coordinator here at Koennecke Elementary School to present other things such as being your best self which she loved the presentation. She was there during all of it, and she enjoyed seeing the kids have fun while still loving how to present themselves in a positive way,” said Krueger.

Krueger says the kids spent their time investing in what makes them great.

“I just talked to them about how important it was to be your best self and they really enjoyed some interactive activities that we got to do, and we ended up making a poster board here for Koennecke Elementary School where it showed how each kid viewed themselves in a positive way. So, we had each student write a way that they viewed themselves positively,” said Krueger.

Krueger says she was thankful to have shared this outreach program with the kids. She says their appreciation for the message was priceless.

“I personally enjoyed it a lot. I found it that it was great to actually see the kids incorporating something that is not only in my Junior Miss but it’s worldwide through all Junior Miss and so I found it really rewarding and a great way to be able to see that even though it was a small little presentation, the kids were able to learn something from it and that they came out with a better positive outlook upon themselves and those around them,” said Krueger. “All of the fifth graders, when I asked them about their feedback afterwards, they said that they all loved it and they told the ACE coordinator would I be doing something like that again. So, they were super ecstatic about it.”

Woman, continued.

Krueger says she especially thanks Denali Diaz, the ACE coordinator at Koennecke, for helping coordinate the efforts.

Distinguished Young Women is a national non-profit organization providing scholarships to high school senior girls. The program is designed to give young women the opportunity and support to succeed before, during, and after college.

Donations, continued.

She says, with summer around the corner. She expects that even more families will lean on them for assistance.

“Look around and see how many people live in Seguin now. You can’t find anything, any place so just the idea that we have grown in population and people came here looking for better and maybe they are doing better but food is so expensive and you talk about food and gas – what are you going to do, how are you going to get to work if you don’t have the gas to get to work? We are midway point for people not just that they depend on us all the time but just something between the paycheck or the instance that caused them to have to come here. So, if they could put their pride aside, we can ask the community to get them supported for a while,” said Lee.

Lee says while many individuals and families are working, the cupboard is also important to those who need a little more help and whose needs are often required on a more regular basis.

“We are begging for what we need to help feed our community, so the kids don’t go to school hungry, or the kids don’t go without, or even our elderly or people who have mental issues don’t suffer because we are very important to a lot of people as far as being able to come here once a month,” said Lee. “And let’s face the fact at this point, when I came here in 1988, I don’t think there was anybody homeless. We have homeless people now and we do help them because they are not going to take milk. They are not going to take eggs because where are they going to take it? Where are they going to refrigerate it? They don’t take refrigerated meat. Where are they going to put it? So, they are allowed actually to come every day but the things that they get are so minor and we try to supply them with Spam, Vienna sausages, regular water, sports water, a soda occasionally, chips. Everything I give them is not necessarily but at least they are eating,” said Lee. Donations can be dropped off at the Christian Cupboard Mondays through Thursdays from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Amazon orders are also welcomed and can be delivered directly to the cupboard. The cupboard is located at 516 N. Camp St. A drop-off box for donations is also available on the north side of the building. The box is available 24/7.

TLU Drops 2-1 Battle to St. Thomas in SCAC Title Game

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- No. 5 ranked and top-seed Texas Lutheran dropped its second game of the 2023 SCAC Tournament in the championship game Sunday, losing 2-1 to two-seed St. Thomas.

It marks the first time that TLU has not been the SCAC regular season and tourney champs since joining the conference in 2014.

The fourth matchup between TLU and St. Thomas was tightly contested, with the two teams exchanging runs across the second and third innings before the Celts plated the game-winning run in the fourth via an RBI groundout.

St. Thomas (32-8) got on the board first in the second inning courtesy of an RBI double down the left field line.

In the top of the third, TLU (38-6) plated

the tying run on an RBI single from Caelee Clark (Montgomery/Lake Creek) that allowed Isabella Rodriguez (Pearland/Pearland) to race home.

After a pair of scoreless innings, St. Thomas plated the go-ahead run on an RBI groundout.

Isabella Rodriguez paced the Bulldogs at the plate with a 1-for-3 performance, while Amanda White (Lockhart/Lockhart) took her fourth loss of the season, moving to 13-4. White started the game and went 4.1 innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits and a walk to two strikeouts. Sydney Ouellette (Corpus Christi/Gregory-Portland) entered in relief and went 1.2 innings, allowing no hits or walks and striking out one.

Caelee Clark, Linzee Leal (Corpus Christi/

Mary Carroll), Serena Gonzalez (Corpus Christi/Foy H. Moody), Madison Johnson (Round Rock/Round Rock), and Sydney Ouellette were named to the All-Tournament Team.

The Bulldogs await their postseason plans to be announced during the NCAA DivisionIII Softball Selection Show on May 15 at 12 PM CST.

N.C Governor Says “12-Week” Abortion Ban Actually Total Ban

(Raleigh, NC) -- The governor of North Carolina says a Republican-backed 12-week abortion ban is an effort to ban abortion completely. Speaking on CBS’ Face the Nation, Democrat Roy Cooper said the GOP bill creates numerous obstacles not only for women, but also for clinics and doctors. The governor said he would veto the bill if it’s brought to him, but acknowledged the Republican super-majority in the state legislature could override his veto. Cooper said four Republican lawmakers promised their constituents they would keep abortion rights, adding that he hopes at least one of the four “keeps their promise.”

NYC Councilmembers Consider Mental Health Bills Following Subway Rider Death

(New York, NY) -- New York City Council members are considering a suite of mental health legislation a week after a mentally disturbed man was killed on the subway. Councilman Kevin Riley reacted to the death of 30-year-old Jordan Neely, saying black men are being choked out instead of being given resources. Police say Neely was threatening passengers aboard an F train when a marine put him in a chokehold to subdue him. Neely used to be a Michael Jackson impersonator but had recently been experiencing mental health struggles. Councilmembers are considering legislation that would create a Mental Health Roadmap.

UW Survey: More People Drank More During Coronavirus Outbreak

(Madison, WI) -- Researchers at the University of Wisconsin say more people drank more during the coronavirus outbreak. The UW’s School of Medicine and Public Health says a new survey showed young people, between 21 and 40-years-old, people who made more money, and people who worked from home all drank more during the pandemic. The survey says 23-percent of people reported drinking more during the coronavirus’ first wave, but that number fell as the pandemic went on. Researcher Amy Schultz says Wisconsin was known for heavy drinking before the coronavirus, and the pandemic only made that worse for some people.

Talking On Cell Phones Linked To Hypertension

(Guangzhou) -- Talking on a cell phone for 30 minutes a week or more has been linked to high blood pressure, according to new research out of China. Those who spent a half-hour on the phone, even hands-free, were 12 percent more likely to develop hypertension. Six hours a week raised the risk to 25 percent. Researchers suggest that low levels of radiofrequency energy emitted by phones could be to blame. But, it also could be that those who talk often on their phones have a more stressful lifestyle in the first place.
