Message From The Head of School Welcome to our new quarterly newsletter! I hope you enjoy reading through some updates and highlights of what has happened in the first part of the 2021-2022 school year. While we are still sending out a version of our Weekly Bulletin, this newsletter will provide a more comprehensive look at school life in a format that is both accessible and beautiful.

Students are returning to a campus that continues to improve, to teachers and staff that genuinely care for them, and to a school community intent on their intellectual and spiritual growth and development. We love our students and continue to serve gratefully as your partners in Christian education.

Without a doubt, the highlight of the first quarter has been the return of students to campus. It has been heartwarming to see students excited to re-engage in on-campus learning, sitting in our classrooms, and moving through the building. After almost 18 months, the sound of student voices in the hallways is music to my ears!

TRUTH SEEKERS

NEW SCHOOL THEME & THEME LAUNCH

Each school year, SPH schools identify a theme based on our Mission and Vision, and for 2021-2022, the theme is Truth Seekers.

The term Truth Seekers comes from our list of Expected Student Outcomes (ESOs)–six characteristics that we seek to instill into all of our students at SPH Kemang Village. We want our students to be Servant Leaders, Faithful Disciples, Confident Communicators, World Changers, Flourishing Learners, and Truth Seekers.

The Bible speaks to the process of seeking quite regularly. In Deuteronomy, God’s people are told to seek God in times of challenge or distress (Deut. 4: 29), and in Matthew 6, Jesus tells the crowd to “Seek first His kingdom” and all the rest of the necessities of life will be cared for (v. 33). Both of these passages remind the reader that seeking is a part of our lives – we will always be looking for something and when we are looking for the right thing, we will find it and so much more.

Our theme verse for the year is another example from the book of Jeremiah. When this book was written, God’s people had been carried into captivity in Babylon as a consequence of their sin and disobedience.

For many years, they lived as slaves in the vast Babylonian empire. However, God had not forgotten them and after many years, He spoke words of encouragement through the prophet Jeremiah –

This beautiful passage of scripture reminds us that no matter how challenging our circumstances, God has a plan and His plan is for our good. He has not forgotten us and calls us to patiently wait for Him while we do good for those in our communities.

As Christians, we believe that God is the source of all truth, therefore the call in Jeremiah to seek God is a call to seek truth.

In our classrooms and interactions this year, we will be encouraging our students to seek truth at all times. Some of this seeking is quite straightforward like in a mathematics class; however, sometimes seeking truth is a little more challenging such as truth in the media. The most beautiful part of God’s promise to us in Jeremiah is that when we seek truth wholeheartedly, even in the challenging areas, God will reveal Himself to us as an act of grace and love.

I sent you into exile. Live honourably by planting gardens and starting families, blessing your Babylonian neighbours. I have not forgotten you and very soon, I will restore you to your homeland. I have a plan for each of you, a good plan; but you have a job to do first. Call upon me, I will listen.

3 | RENOVATION UPDATES

Welcome Home Kindy & Grade 1!

1st Floor

I am confident that I am not the only one who has eagerly waited for school to reopen and for teachers and students to be able to, once again, roam the hallways of SPH Kemang Village. Those of us who spend time on the first floor of our school building have even more of a reason to anticipate returning to school because our entire floor looks brand NEW! I had the privilege of visiting this space a few weeks ago. I was stunned by the color and the light that occupied the space. The hallway and classrooms are filled with inviting color combinations and small details that will make students feel welcome!

As with all our school improvement projects, the goal is to enhance student learning. I am excited about the opportunities that we will have on the first floor to see how an improved space will invite students to learn and create in new ways. I am grateful to our leadership for making these improvements a priority.

New Soccer Field Update

As the grass grows in on our new soccer field, the excitement and anticipation of our community grows in equal measure. The opening of this new outdoor space will bring many new opportunities for our students and the school community. From outdoor field days to hosting soccer games, these occasions are becoming less of a dream and more of a coming reality with each passing day.

As we make progress towards a return to inperson learning, we also look forward to the return of our sports programs to in-person learning, development, and competition with our athletes. The time away from the school has been long but we are confident that the nearing return to sports will be that much sweeter with the new facilities and a renewed excitement and vision for sport in our school community!

Our school has developed a quality sports program over the past several years with high student participation rates, and we are excited about the continued growth and development of these programs with this new outdoor soccer field! Introducing the capacity for field games, sports, and training will greatly enhance how we offer physical education and sports programs in our school community.

3 | RENOVATION UPDATE

Playground and Outdoor Court

Very soon, we will have a brand new Play Space for our Junior School students occupying over 500 square meters adjacent to our canteen.

Professionally designed to stimulate creative free play, the playground structure will safely challenge students to develop both fine and gross motor skills while also encouraging them to participate in collaborative activities. We anticipate this ongoing project to be completed in early 2022.

Senior School

Hybrid Learning Updates

On Monday, September 13, 2021, SPH Kemang Village welcomed back grade 11 and 12 students to participate in our hybrid learning program. For the past 18 months, our hallways have been quiet and the classrooms empty. Finally, the hallways and classrooms were bursting with laughter and students going to their classes. They brought with them an energy and excitement that so many of us have been missing for far too long.

Grade 10 joined hybrid learning on Monday, September 20. They brought more joy and more energy to the hallways. Soon, we will have grades 7, 8, and 9 joining the Senior School hallways. The teachers are excited to be able to have many of the Cambridge Lower Secondary, IGCSE, and DP students back on campus for face-to-face learning. We hope to see more students as the semester progresses and the pandemic subsides.

Looking Ahead As October approaches, the Senior School team hopes to adjust to the new hybrid schedule while continuing to offer high-quality education to our students in class and online. We also hope the government will continue to open up schools for more face-to-face learning.

No matter what, the Senior School team is committed to making sure our students are well prepared for their future. We are working diligently to provide excellent lessons and learning experiences so that our students can soar in their future endeavors.

Junior School

Hybrid Learning Updates The pandemic has had a global impact, affecting many different facets of the communities we are in. For all of us in this SPH community, we know its effects on education all too well. On the flip side, however, we have seen and experienced many different areas of growth. We have witnessed how teachers and students have elevated their ability to incorporate technology in learning, families spending more time together and living in their home countries, and the extent of how our community cares for one another. In almost every instance of setback, our community has rallied together to transform their moments of hope.

In the last two weeks, the grade 6 team had the opportunity to experience a highly-anticipated moment of hope: hybrid learning. After much preparation, we were finally able to execute this program. This opportunity could not have been possible without the support of the government, school staff, and parents. Our offices worked hard to bridge communication between all parties involved, which would not have gone as smoothly if it weren't for the ongoing efforts of Ibu Hana, Ibu Achi, and Pak Faritz. Members of school leadership and coordinators took their time to meet with the grade 6 teachers and ensured that we had everything we needed. ISS staff ensured that our classrooms were properly sanitized while security and GA finalized their protocols. The parents were also busy at work, either preparing necessary documents or communicating with teachers regarding their preference in this shift. After many hours of preparation, the stage was set; we were prepared.

4 | HYBRID LEARNING

During the first day of hybrid, Mr. Aaron and I experienced the joy of seeing our students in person. We took the first few minutes in SL to reconnect with parents and admire the growth that our students had gone through. After Mr. Aaron gave an overview of student expectations, it was time to head up to class. For the first time in a year and a half, our hybrid students were able to sit at their desks and experience class in person. For the rest of the day, we worked on testing out different scenarios and activities while finding issues we could troubleshoot. Through a set of mini-lessons, I was able to test out other modes of teaching, such as a lecture mode, a small group discussion, and a class discussion/activity. Students, both hybrid and online, participated in these activities and gave me feedback on what was working and what was not. I could not be more thankful for the level of engagement and support that my students provided, and it felt like I was working with a team of teachers rather than students.

Throughout the rest of the week, we settled into our hybrid routine, maximizing the time that we had being in person. An occurrence that we had to plan for was what to do with students when it's recess or break. Thankfully, there were a few activities for students, such as creating paper airplanes; creating pieces of artwork or origami are simple activities that classes could do. In science class, we were able to conduct a lab. While hybrid learning students were able to perform a hands-on experiment, students at home were able to predict and closely study the reaction through the camera lens. Through this process, the entire class collaborated and participated in the experiment, whether they were at home or in school.

As hybrid learning extends to the rest of the school, I see all hands on deck as we brace for what's about to come. The teachers and staff are filled with excitement and nervous anticipation as we prepare ourselves to welcome our students back. We are all collaborating, finding ways to support each other in having the students return. Whatever comes our way, we are ready to have our students return. We look forward to seeing our students in hybrid learning, both online and in-person students alike.

5 | A MESSAGE FROM THE ACADEMIC TEAM

The First Quarter We are well into our first term and students will soon be receiving their progress reports.

In anticipation of this we would like to shed some insight into understanding the report cards and specifically the progress report cards.

A key idea surrounding education is the gathering and using of evidence for learning.

Simply stated this means that we look at what the students have done (their work) to tell us what they have learned. This looking at student work is known as assessment.

There are different types of assessment over the course of a term: a quiz, a quick survey, a quick write, a multi-paragraph essay, a chapter test or a unit test, etc. All of these types of assessment will fall into four broad categories, diagnostic assessments, external assessments, formative assessments, and summative assessments. This article will focus on the formative and summative assessments, thus allow me to introduce a definition for these two types of assessment.

Formative Assessment: This assessment is intended to promote further improvement of student learning. It is a measurement that is used to inform the teaching and learning process. The student and the teacher both gain information and can collaboratively improve future learning. The main goal of formative assessment is to gain as much information as possible in respect of what the student has achieved, what has not been achieved and what is required to best facilitate further learning progress.

Summative Assessment: This assessment is intended to summarize student achievement at a particular time although summative data can provide feedback to student and teachers and school leadership to lead to further improvement. The summative assessments generally are used to report to parents and students and serves also as an accountability measure for educational providers (the school). In addition, they supply data towards awards: for example, meeting specific criteria on the IGCSE or IBDP examinations garners a student Cambridge certificate awards or the IB Diploma. The summative assessment is the final measure of what the student has learned.

As you look at the progress report, please keep in mind that the marks on the progress report are formative in nature. These marks inform you how your student is doing thus far, we are still in the middle of the school semester, so these marks inform where the learning needs to be enhanced and improved and supported. If you would consider a student as a plant, the daily care and watering of a plant to ensure it grows well is the formative assessment. This is different from the summative assessment where we would be taking measurement of the plant height or stalks or petals. The first impacts growth the second records growth.

5 | A MESSAGE FROM THE ACADEMIC TEAM

Think of the student as a plant...

Formative assessment is like feeding and watering the plants appropriate to the needs – this of course directly affects the growth and development of the plan.

Summative assessment is like measuring the plant, how tall is it, how many stalks, how many leaves etc. It is interesting and important to compare and analyze the measurements, but, this does not affect the development or growth of the plant.

Last week we shared the key idea of assessment as the gathering and using of evidence for learning. In essence, teachers look at what the students have done (their work) to tell them what the students have learned. This week we will consider the additional aspect that is assessed known as the Learning Skills.

The Learning Skills are postures of mind and behavior that cannot be “taught” per say but rather are encouraged and practiced and developed to hopefully become an intrinsic discipline of our students. This is done with each activity and task where students are provided guidelines or tips on the steps required to complete activities or tasks. You will see on the report card five designated Learning Skills: Self-management, communication, research, thinking and social. These five elements are assessed separately, though in application they could be summarized as a student's attitude towards their learning. These 5 skills answer the question, Is the student able to organize their materials and thoughts and movements to locate and access the questions and answers and express their learning appropriately and correctly to their peers and teachers?

These skills are foundational for any learning to take place at all and so many would argue are most important. These skills are a main feature of all learning that takes place in our youngest learners and we hope to see increased ease in its use as the students' progress through learning that is more complex and challenging. A student who is not able to self-manage would not be able to be ready to learn and unable to prepare to share their learning. We ask that you give special attention to the marks on the Learning Skills as well as to the subject areas: these attitudes or postures or disciplines matter.

6 | WHAT'S ON SPH KV

Active Living This school year we have launched a new active living initiative to get our community more active with the goal of improving the learning and health of our students!

Classroom teachers are using movement break resources to encourage our students to be moving throughout the school day.

These movement break opportunities will support our students to develop socially, emotionally, and physically.

In this first term of the school year, students and teachers also participated in the "Rise and Shine" morning exercise challenge. It has been exciting to see our community engage in regular exercise and movement together that will help motivate our students to pursue their potential in the classroom and beyond!

Open The Magic Day Open the Magic Day is a time for teachers and parents to pause and share their love for reading with their kids.

Many teachers took the time to record themselves reading a book to share with kids.

Teachers participated in setting an example that reading can be fun. They showed how to read with fluency and expression.

Mission Service Learning Update We are thrilled to share that we have officially launched our Mission Service Learning (MSL) program from Kindergarten to Grade 12! Here's a snapshot of what our students will be working on!

The primary vision of our MSL program is the following:

MSL Vision

To create a space for students to intentionally seek opportunities to serve sacrificially and advocate for justice locally and globally. Additionally, MSL is intended to educate our students on what it looks like to be a global citizen and how they can make a difference, based on the model Jesus set before us.

Biblical Model

Our MSL program is based on Acts 1:8, which states: But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.

Re-enrollment Update Thank you so much for the trust you place in our team here at SPH Kemang Village.

Over the past two years, our campus has worked diligently to continue to provide high-quality learning opportunities for all students amidst the ongoing pandemic. This has not always been easy and we are grateful for your partnership with us.

This is the time of year when we ask our families to look ahead to the coming school year of 2022-2023 and prayerfully consider continuing their partnership with SPH Kemang Village.

Your early response for the coming school year helps our team more effectively plan our programs and ensure we have the ideal staff community in place.
