Shared Immersions Sesc São Paulo

In the context of contemporary issues, the digital medium—a powerful catalyst for communicational demands—brings together a multitude of content spanning the various areas of knowledge, as well as the offer of remote services. The metaphor of a kaleidoscope accessed by different audiences exemplifies this context in which the SescTV channel is inserted. In this sense, to plan for the future it is essential to consider the present scenario having history as a value. Thus, it is worth mentioning the start of the Sesc/Senac TV Network in the year 2000, with shared management by the two institutions in its name. As an evolution of this experience, Sesc received sole control of the channel in 2006, creating what is now SescTV, a channel which has immersed itself in the technological potential for greater reach, seeking to democratize the access to its content. Its cultural programming, avaliable twenty-four hours a day, includes series and documentaries along with formats that support different artistic languages—such as the broadcast of theater productions and films—and also panels and interviews that offer critical discussions about contemporary society. From a transversal perspective, SescTV is still writing its history in the digital environment, amassing a collection of almost ten thousand titles. That’s the strength, guided by the plurality of themes based on fiction and reality, that helps it fulfills its educational and sociocultural role, with the mission to fuel exchanges that expand personal and collective repertoires, collaborating for a more diversified human development. Let the access to quality content in the digital universe, still marked by social inequalities, become increasingly equitable; let it open paths to a more just, reflective, and self-critical society.

Sesc’s Cultural Channel SescTV

Based on a selection that focus mainly on Brazilian programs and independent audiovisual productions, SescTV is the place where contemporary meets the past, presenting a schedule that brings both current events and recent artistic and cultural production to discussion, aiming to rescue and revive our memory. The channel uses television as a medium for narrative, artistic and poetic experimentation: It creates content that incorporate and combines experimentation, reflection, and provocation, firmly believing in the autonomy of the viewer for an active construction of meaning in their interaction with the works. SescTV’s works to create a large audiovisual collection on Brazilian culture and society, with selected licensed content and original programming, representing the full diversity and plurality that is present in our people and our culture. After all, our singularity - what represents us as unique - should go hand in hand with what we share – everything that unites us and that defines our cultural identity. Such diversity and plurality come alive from our content, where it takes form through the most diverse formats, blurring outdated boundaries between real and invented in documentaries and fiction, clashing erudite and popular in series, concerts, and debates; and bringing different views from various areas such as visual arts, theater, dance, literature, and music. The selection we’re about to present in the following pages deals with a wide variety of themes, from education and philosophy to sustainability and human rights, from race, gender and sexuality to architecture and urbanism: you are now invited see the world where we live through SescTV’s eyes.

Histories of Gestures Standing, Falling, Sitting, Jumping, and Turning. Each episode looks at the history, transformation, and interaction of these five gestures in different times and contexts, through a critical reading that exposes how political, social, and economic tensions intertwine with bodies. It’s a journey through some well-known - but rarely questioned – gestures, based on the book Histoires de Gestes by Isabelle Launay and Marie Glon.

100 Years of Culture and Conflict Contemporary historians and thinkers discuss the historical events that shaped current Brazilian politics and culture. Movements such as the Week of Modern Art and Tenentism, both of which took place in 1922, are investigated, guiding the viewer in a dialog about events that were influenced by the ideologies from the early 20th century and shaped by the cultural heritage of the 19th century, defining the uncertain trajectory of the Republic and Democracy.

Literary Gathering This series is an opportunity to get to know or delve deeper into the literary universe of acclaimed writers of different genres from different eras and from around the world, such as James Joyce, from Ireland, Machado de Assis, from Brazil, or William Burroughs, from the United States. Having Professor Susanna Ventura as guide and featuring a performance by actor Clóvis Torres, in each episode guest writers read and interpret texts by other authors or translators. Amazon – Archaeology of the Forest

This series follows the investigations of archaeologist Eduardo Góes Neves and his team at the archaeological site of Monte Castelo, a riverside shell mound built six thousand years ago by Indigenous peoples who lived on the banks of the Guaporé River, in the state of Rondônia. The excavations reveal objects, adornments, and human remains in what used to be a cemetery, as well as agricultural remnants that prove how Indigenous peoples transformed the forest, challenging the idea that the region was devoid of human presence.

Architectures How famous sights like the Anhangabaú Valley, in São Paulo; the Lapa Arches, in Rio de Janeiro; or the Estação Square, in Belo Horizonte, were planned and constructed, and how did they change over the decades? Through historical images and interviews with architects, historians, artists, and dwellers, this series shows the origin of iconic Brazilian architectural landmarks. While the first season highlights public and private buildings and complexes, the second season focuses on presenting the subversion of its usage.

The City in Brazil

What is a city? Inspired by the book A Cidade no Brasil (The City in Brazil), by Antonio Risério, an anthropologist and writer from Bahia State, this series poses this question as the starting point to show the formation and transformation of Brazilian metropolises. In addition to Risério himself, personalities such as architect Guilherme Wisnik, Indigenous leader Davi Kopenawa Yanomami, and scientist Carlos Nobre explore aspects like the indigenous legacy and European and African influences; the urban space as both a place of gathering and segregation between social classes; the lack of urban planning; and the role of real-estate speculation.

Restless Theater From all over the country, performers and companies are reinventing theater by experimenting with new languages or exploring themes such as black theater, community, and gender issues. Restless Scene highlights the work of companies such as Grupo dos Dez, from Minas Gerais, whose research combines theater and music principles to imagine new formats for musicals; Teatro dos Extremos, a Rio de Janeiro collective that breaks scenes down and explores LGBTQIA+ themes; and the São Paulo company Núcleo Teatral Filhas da Dita, known for its artistic interventions in the city.

Cinema Dreams In four episodes, director Ugo Giorgetti traces a panorama of São Paulo’s cinema from the 1960s to the present. Giorgetti interviews professional colleagues who use their memories and experiences to explain how audiovisual production has survived, even in the absence of financial incentives. On the agenda, historical facts such as the end of the Vera Cruz company (1949–1954); the advancement of advertising as a way to work in the field; film production during the period of censorship imposed by the military dictatorship; the birth and demise of Embrafilme (the official Brazilian Film Company) and the role the both School of Communications and Arts at USP and independent producers played in training new professionals.

Gal Costa talks about the influence of João Gilberto and exploring the sounds of Tropicália while Jair Rodrigues reveals that he chose to sing “Disparada” at the 1966 Record Festival because his mother heard the song and predicted that if he sang it, he would win the competition, which he did.

Providing overview of contemporary dance in Brazil, each episode tells the story of a presentation and its creators through excerpts of performances, interviews with choreographers, dancers, musicians, and personalities who influenced the production. Among the works featured are Mulheres do Asé, by Edileusa Santos, a mixture of dance, poetry, music, and African religiosity; Eu por detrás de mim, by Ana Bottosso and the Companhia de Danças de Diadema, in a piece inspired by sculptor Olafur Eliasson’s works; and Figuras e vozes, by Ballet Stagium, choreographed by Décio Otero.

Lifetime Over sixty each, Altâmia, Claudio, Elca, José, Marina, and Vera are said to be “60 +,” “seniors”, “elderly,” “old,” or, in a kinder description, living “the best age.” But what is the best age, if not the age we are? In each episode, the characters show how they go beyond social and market terminologies, narrating adventures that span the 20th and 21st centuries. Their stories give us clues on how to live (well) through the changes imposed by time over body and mind, the challenges of the present, and what they expect from the future in a country that is also aging but does not knows how to deal with it.

Fragments The series deals with ethics in everyday life, juxtaposing the views of professionals from different areas. In “Between Asphalt and Walls,” homeless people and real-estate agents talk about the rules (or the lack thereof) that define their routines. In “Time Lords and the Truth Machine,” watchmakers reveal secrets of an almost extinct craft, while advertisers reflect on changes in consumer behavior. She Was Carmen In addition to wearing turbans, trinkets, and pineapples that have made her such an iconic figure, Carmen Miranda (1909–1955), honored in this show by director Antunes Filho, dances in a different tempo. The Portuguese-Brazilian singer and actress, recognized throughout the world for her irreverence, is given the minimalist gesture of the butoh—the playwright’s homage to another genius, Japanese dancer Kazuo Ohno (1906–2010), highlighting the representativeness of her work, assimilated even by those who didn’t understand the language she spoke.

Inhabit / Habitat How do people live in an assisted living facility, a college dorm, a circus, or a quilombola community? In each episode, this series portrays the routine, organization, and characteristics of different types of housing arrangements in different regions of the country, following the daily lives of their residents. While the first season presents different modes of dwelling, the second season examines intimacy in unconventional collective spaces, such as different families under the same roof in occupations of abandoned buildings in São Paulo and Rio Grande do Sul or in indigenous tribes, where coexistence takes place inside the malocas.

Hyperreal The series portrays urban youth in different realities, as well as young individuals who share a common passion, be it music, skateboarding, religion, or cosplay. The episodes are divided into themes such as “Adorers,” which profiles fans whose passions range from Michael Jackson to films such as Star Wars; or “Shapes and Cloth,” an episode that unveils the backstage of fashion, revealing the struggle of newly graduated designers for a space in the industry and the profession of dressmaker as an opportunity for underprivileged boys and girls.

Sesc Brazil Instrumental A long-running series of shows in which instruments are the only voice, bringing together new and established artists, both Brazilian and from abroad. The music styles are diverses and include chamamé, coco, transcendental rock, delta blues, Arabic ciranda, and nude jazz. The project started with live performances in the 1980s, and was later adapted for television in 1990. In every episode, a chat mediated by journalist Patricia Palumbo reveals curiosities about the history and the use of the instrument in the composition and interpretation of the repertoire chosen for the show.

Mirada - A Place for Viewing Held in the 2018 edition of Mirada – Ibero-American Performing Arts Festival, in Santos, this series documents different aspects of Latin-American dramaturgy, with testimonies by important names in this scenario such as Peruvian director Chela Ferrari, Portuguese actress and director Joana Craveiro, and Brazilian personalities Antunes Filho, Bia Lessa, Caio Blat, Leonardo Moreira, and Nelson Baskerville. Each episode proposes reflections on the role of theater in rescuing memories and as a space of resistance, as well as in the representation of underrepresented populations, such as Black, Indigenous, and LGBTQIA+.

Monuments “What brings something to remembrance” is the theme of this documentary series, in which historical sites are transformed into monuments. One example is Parque da Juventude in São Paulo, built in the same area where the Carandiru Penitentiary used to operate, holding traces of the 1992 massacre. Also appearing as monuments are the Jaraguá Peak and the knowledge disseminated among professionals of the Dante Pazzanese Cardiology Institute, both in São Paulo, and the ruins of Alcântara, in Maranhão State.

Teachers and scholars introduce the theme, including great talents like Alessandro Penezzi, Badi Assad, Fabio Lima, Maogani Quartet, Warren Nicholson, and Yamandu Costa, who play their own songs as well as standards from both popular and classical music.

We, Black People How can anyone be the center and not be on the margin? In ten short videos, Brazilian and international performers express their urgencies through the language of cinema in first person. They speak of their power; knowledge of the body and its displacement in the social space; respect for memory and ancestry; awareness of their anxieties and contradictions as individuals; movements of resistance to white Eurocentric culture and the liberating force necessary to go beyond the stereotypes created by it.

Paulo Freire, Man of the World This series documents the trajectory of intellectual educator Paulo Freire (1921–1997), who was named the patron of Brazilian education in 2012. The program includes images of places where he lived—from his hometown of Recife, passing through Angicos, in the hinterland of Rio Grande do Norte State, when he devised a methodology for adult literacy. These settings provide the foundation for his most emblematic book, Pedagogy of the Oppressed (1968). The series also brings testimonies from academics and people impacted by his work and covers his exile in Switzerland and the international recognition and influence of his legacy.

Theater According to Antunes Filho The life and artistic trajectory of Antunes Filho (1929–2019), one of the most important Brazilian theater directors and actor trainers: from the beginning of his career, as an actor, in the 1950s, to the partnership with Polish actor and director Zbigniew Ziembinski, and the influence of German playwright Bertolt Brecht. The series highlights his action during the military dictatorship and the new narratives after that period, which were maintained and further explored by the CPT Theater Research Center, a space he founded and where he worked throughout his life, leaving an impressive legacy to the theatrical universe.

Baré, People from the River The waters around the upper and middle Negro River, in Amazonia, are the territory of the Baré Indigenous people. This ethnicity changed their original language, the baré, for the nheengatu (modern Tupi, a Latin American indigenous language) and the Portuguese, under the influence of Portuguese Jesuits and Carmelites. Despite this, the Barés preserve their ancestors’ traditions, be it in cooking—based on fishing and cassava harvests—or cultural habits dedicated to legends and ceremonies like the kariamã, a rite of passage for teenagers into adult life.

The Color of Football: Comercial F.C. – Ghost Team The story of the now-defunct Comercial Futebol Clube, one of the founding teams of the São Paulo Football League, which was part of the major league until 1962. The film shows their journey, using historical pictures and testimonials from journalists, researchers, and former players, such as Dino Sani, who afterward went on to be a world champion and play for Milan, Boca Juniors, and Corinthians.

Edgar Morin – Open Diaries of a Humanist The French philosopher, who turned 100 in 2021, is interviewed by the sociologist Danilo Santos de Miranda. His ideas are compiled in the book Diários de Edgar Morin, published by Edições Sesc. Hygiene – XIX Theatre Company The gentrification process that took place in Brazil in the late 19th century is depicted by the XIX Theatre Company, from the perspective of laundry ladies, escorts, healers, former slaves, merchants, and anarchists, all living at Nossa Senhora do Bom Jesus de Praga, a tenement in downtown São Paulo. Kunhangue Arandu – The Wisdom of Women In the Jaraguá region, in the city of São Paulo, women from the Guarani people talk about the contemporary hardships to keep their families in their territories, while recounting the place’s history. Wild Love Ritual In 1969, the multimedia artist José Agrippino de Paula and the dancer-choreographer Maria Esther Stockler made their mark in the performing arts with their performance show Rito do amor selvagem [Wild love ritual], by Grupo Soma, at Teatro São Pedro, in São Paulo. The show introduced a new language mixing dance, music, and video art, informed by AfroBrazilian rituals and pop art. Sérgio Mamberti, Tom Zé, Stênio Garcia, Claudia Alencar, and Gerald Thomas, some of whom starred in the original staging, talk about the experience, while the film shows sound and video vignettes.

Tuã Ingugu – Eyes of Water This short film is part of the Interdependence project, produced by the NGO Art for the World, in which filmmakers from eleven countries show the relationship between society and climate change. Tuã Ingugu shows Faremá, a chief from the Kalapalo people, telling an old story about the origins of the local river. Located in the Xingu Indigenous Reserve, the river is used for food, transportation, leisure, spirituality, and livelihood. Faremá reflects on how water is fundamental to life by using the story of the Tietê River, in São Paulo, poisoned by pollutants.

Grandfather In The Living Room: The Gentle Prose of Antonio Candido The documentary presents a different perspective on one of Brazil’s greatest intellectuals, Antonio Candido de Mello e Souza (Rio de Janeiro 1918 São Paulo 2017), whose work has had a profound impact on historiography and literary criticism in Brazil and who continues to be fundamental in the education of students and professionals. The documentary is based on footage captured in 2009 by Antonio Candido’s granddaughter, the journalist Maria Clara Vergueiro, during four lunch meetings at the critic’s apartment. Through these encounters, the film reveals the more intimate side of the professor who taught for over half a century at the University of São Paulo.
