ou hear and see them all over the place. There’s Nike, Coca Cola, McDonald’s, Apple, Facebook, Disney and the list goes on. Such brands resonate with us because they are strong, simple and unique — the characteristics that make for a good brand. It may seem trivial but branding is one of the fundamental aspects of a business and plays a major role in developing a successful and profitable company. But getting your brand to resonate in the hearts and minds of the consumer is no easy feat and developing brand loyalty is no walk in the park either. While prospective business owners put considerable thought into how they will fund and develop their product, much emphasis should also be placed on branding to ensure a successful business. So here’s why branding is important: It is good branding that wins the patronage and loyalty of your audience and generates revenue. Your brand is the principles on which your

business stands and conveys why you’re in business, why consumers should choose your company’s products or services over another’s Branding is an invaluable asset to a company; it builds brand loyalty, value and generates revenue. It attracts new customers, and makes you stand out from the competition. These are all key components in ensuring a successful and profitable business. A good brand is an image, is easily identifiable, creates consciousness, and raises awareness of your business. Your brand should have the ability to live in the hearts and minds of your customers where they see you and only you as the solution to their problems and the sole provider of their wants and needs. Branding is vital and is the quickest and most effective way for your company to sell to the public what you’re about and what you have to offer. But as fundamental as branding is to your business, it can be one of the most difficult elements of the business to nail down.


Here’s how you create an effective, unforgettable and loyal worthy brand.

Have a clear vision.

Think critically and analytically to create a brand that is unique to consistently grab the attention of consumers. It must be something that your audience wants and your competitors do not offer. Think long and hard about the name and it’s meaning to make sure it conveys positivity, is simple, easy to remember and rolls off the tongue easily.

Focus on a niche market.

It’s virtually impossible to offer a product or a service that appeals to everyone. Each product or service has the ability to attract a particular group of people — a niche market. Be sure to identify an audience, understand their wants and needs and tailor your brand, message and the name and logo of your business to appeal to that demographic. Know your competition, as the motivation behind brand development is to speak to your target audience in such a powerful way that it motivates and compels them to see you as the only choice.

Communicate your brand simply and uniquely. You brand has a name, a logo, a central idea — an identity. When developing and designing make sure that it’s simple, clean, creative and mirrors the business’ identity and encapsulates the business’ idea. A brand that resonates with your audience has a clear message and either portrays you as credible or reaffirms your credibility. Your aim is to win the hearts of the consumer and captivate them enough to earn their trust and ultimate loyalty to the brand. These elements are the cornerstone to grabbing the attention of the consumer so much so that they can’t resist buying your product, not the competitors.

Develop brand loyalty. The development of your product and sales are integral parts of your business model. But, it is branding that builds loyalty, appeals to consumers and makes you stand out, if done right. Remember, people don’t build relationships with products. They develop loyalty to brands. So, invest the time in researching, defining and building your brand. It’s how people find out why you’re in business. Start the process of branding early in the game. Know your identity, recognize your strengths and build or otherwise improve on what you do best. Remember your brand serves as a promise to your consumers and you must endeavor to always deliver. Repeat your brand and tag line until even you get tired of hearing them. To become successful you must sell your brand

every chance you get. Repetition is key to raising brand awareness. A good measure of brand resonance is when you’re getting tired of your own brand and tagline. Marketers argue it’s perhaps in that moment that your brand is beginning to resonate in the hearts of the audience. Stick with it. Make good use of technology and social media. These technological developments have made brand recognition and marketing easier, a lot less expensive and are smart ways to place your brand on the global market. In the absence of branding all products would be similar and your chances of making a profit would be less likely. A successful brand is an invaluable asset that drives business and creates a reputation so powerful and appealing that folks feel they simply can’t live without it.

EMILY SLOSBERG The Dori Slosberg Foundation

E

mily Slosberg will never hear her sister’s laughter, or share a room or clothes or ride in a car with her twin sister again. Eighteen years ago a speeding vehicle slammed into the car that they were riding in, killing five of the nine passengers in their car. Emily survived but her twin sister Dori didn’t. The year was 1996 and the twins were only 14 years old. “There were a total of seven kids in the backseat of the car. We weren’t wearing seatbelts. The driver and his friend were wearing their seat belts. Five kids in our car died including Dori. The driver of the other car and his two friends were also wearing seat belts and survived,” she remembers. Even though Emily and one other friend weren’t wearing a seatbelt, they survived. The Department of Highway Safety says the use of seat belts is the most effective way to save lives and reduce injuries in crashes. Emily made an observation that coincides with the lifesaving powers of the seatbelt: “It’s amazing how everybody who had their seatbelts on survived.” The days, weeks and years following the loss of their beloved Dori were hard for Emily and her family. “For a long time we weren’t able to do anything else but grieve. It felt like the light guiding me was over. We did everything together, she was my best friend,” Emily says. “Then we decided we can’t just do anything, she died

and we have to do something.” That’s when the Dori Slosberg Foundation was born. Emily is the CEO. “The first thing we did was we tried to get the legislature to pass the primary importance of a seatbelt to make it a primary offense. They told us it was impossible,” she remembers. “My dad said nothing is impossible.” The life-saving message about traffic safety had to be delivered and Emily and her family were determined to get it across. “We made a video about the accident,” she says. “I took the video around to the schools and showed it to middle and high schoolers. I showed them that I’m not an actress, it really can happen, it happened to me. Then we said we should establish a foundation that goes around and educate kids all throughout Palm Beach, Broward and Dade counties.” And they did. Emily says there were many organizations focusing on different aspects of traffic safety but not on every aspect. Dedicated to traffic safety and reversing the deadly statistics our roadways produce, the Dori Slosberg Foundation was established in 2004. Each year this non-governmental, not for profit, public service agency organizes a number of programs to fulfill their mission of educating the public about the importance of traffic safety, safe driving habits, seatbelt

use and the proper ways of using child restraint devices. Their mission is also to: Support and advance the driver’s education programs nationwide enabling law enforcement to save lives through legislation. Assist the Florida Department of Transportation to ensure a safe driving environment on our roadways. “We have so many different programs. The one that I’m heavily involved in is going around to the kids and doing safety presentations and talking about what happened to me,” she says. “We bring in a nurse trauma, other victims and DUI manslaughter defendants so we touch all aspects. Every year we get to do back to school assemblies and pretrauma assemblies at various schools throughout the year.” One of the other programs is Staying Alive on interstate 95, 75 and Florida roadways. “It’s a big DUI patrol where we bring all law enforcement officers from the different disciplines together. These are the ones pulling people over every day, writing the tickets, investigating the crimes, so we figured they deserve to be honored,” Emily says. “This program is showcased by our annual event in June which addresses the many issues on I-95. The officers in attendance leave determined to crack down on dangerous driving behavior.” Another one of their many initiatives is the DUI ZERO TOLERANCE. “We partner with different agencies to get statistics, to see where we’re at,” she says. “This is a vital component of high school education. We want to make sure that students have the opportunity to take this life saving course and behindthe–wheel training prior to getting their licenses to drive. We hold safety assemblies across the state to further educate students of the importance of seat belt use and eliminating distractions while driving. Local law enforcement

and officials participate in the majority of these life-saving programs.” And for teachers, there’s a program for them too. “We host an annual Driver Education Conference for teachers and administrators from across the state,” she says. “This is to make sure that our students have motivated instructors who have the most up to date information on all aspects of driving and associated technology.” The Dori Slosberg foundation caters to everyone regardless of their age. “We have a program that helps seniors get access to their licenses,” she says. “We have the mobile unit that go out to certain areas and assist those unable to drive due to age or disability. They can renew their licenses; take eye exams and everything else that one needs to take care of at the DMV. Officials and experts speak in a safety forum offering tips on safe senior driving and when to find alternatives.” While these programs are very successful, funding for the foundation didn’t come easy. “Getting funding for the first few years was not easy but things eventually picked up,” she says. “We were lucky enough to have the business community and the different communities donate. A lot of people have an interest in keeping our roadways safe.” What’s in the future for the Dori Slosberg foundation? Emily plans to expand her reach. “My ultimate dream is to go national,” she says. “We want to expand, but we just haven’t figured out how to get there yet. And that’s one of our major obstacles.” One thing she does know is that

too many are losing their lives on our roadways. Emily pleads with motorists. “Wear your seatbelts, slow down, don’t text and drive, don’t drink and drive, be careful on the roads,” she cautions. “A lot of parents think once their kid is a straight-A student, or are well behaved, that he/she is a good driver but that’s not necessarily true. Parents set the example, your kids are watching.” The statistics are astounding. Statistics show that vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among

five to 34 year olds in the U.S. and 80 people are killed on US roadways. Last year, 35,244 persons met their demise on the road. The reasons for these crashes vary — from drunk driving to speeding to texting and driving to bad weather to not wearing seat belts. The Dori Slosberg is dedicated to lessening the statistics and save lives. You too can help. “Your assistance will allow us to distribute tools that help everyone to drive safely. Consistency: A brand’s message needs to be clear and consistent for people to recognize it as a brand. Trust is established once customers are confident about what your brand stands for and the relationship they continue to have with it. Think about Nordstrom. When we go there, we’ve come to expect exceptional customer service and a personalized experience. This is established by delivered consistently in the past and continued service in the future. Authenticity: Your brand is the total of what you do, how you do it and the experience/interactions your customers have with your business. Look to other brands. YOU, the expert?

I

’m certain that you have seen those people that are designated as “influencers” on LinkedIn. Hopefully, you are following several of them and reading their posts. Has it occurred to you that your clients might want to think of YOU in the same way? Perhaps they are hoping for you to be more like those influencers. Perhaps they are looking for you to share your expertise so that they might benefit in some way. Why not give your customers what they want? What’s holding you back from being seen as the expert in your field? Are you, by default, letting a competitor wear that distinction in front of your customers? The marvelous LinkedIn platform provides no shortage of opportunities to “step up” as a thought leader or industry expert. Here are some easy to implement ideas. Posting on the main news feed (right along with the existing Influencers) is an excellent strategy for being seen regularly by your network and their contacts. You can use the option of extending your posts to Twitter as well (I do this nearly each and every morning). Keep in mind that posting can include liking or commenting on other people’s posts because those actions also get you appearing in a separate news feed entry. You don’t have to create new content each and every time, piggy-back on others’ posts and get seen! Group discussions can extend your influence well beyond the number of your direct connections. For example, there is a professionals’ group in south Florida that exceeds 35,000 members. That would be an outstanding place to reach a local area market where the membership represents many different professions. Other LinkedIn groups exceed 500,000 or even 900,000 members. Imagine yourself in conversation with audiences of that size! In February of this year LinkedIn started rolling out a valuable

publishing tool to all members. Suddenly everyone can now create a 200-400-word commentary that becomes a permanent part of their profile as well as a fresh post on the news feed. Essentially, all LinkedIn members can now describe themselves as “authors” by utilizing this terrific expression vehicle. Formerly, this feature was reserved for influencers only. Begin using these strategies on a consistent basis and a difference will be apparent within your network. You will gradually start to establish a wider perception that you are knowledgeable, committed and a regular provider of information of value. Pose a question, post a quote or share a motivating statement with your connections. The small investment of your time to accomplish this can lead to a loyal following that will stay with you for a lifetime.

ross Catholic Outreach, a Catholic relief and development organization based in South Florida (www. Cross Catholic Outreach,) in partnership with Caritas in Veritate International, will present an International Leaders Forum at the U’niversita Urbana at the Vatican from Nov. 5-9. The forum themes will be “The Culture of Encounter” and Pope Francis’ “Evangelii Gaudium” (Pope Francis’ Apostolic Exhortation to find “Joy in the Gospel”). One of several forum objectives is to involve Catholic institutions in the Church’s Mission of Charity as witnessed by Pope Francis and as called for in Pope Benedict XVI’s encyclical “Deus Caritas est.” The theology of Pope Francis will be presented and will include “reaching out to refugees, a call of Pope Francis to be heard.” Cross Catholic President James J. Cavnar will be on the panel “Encountering Jesus in the Face of the Poor.” This topic reflects a core concept of Cross Catholic Outreach, which is dedicated to “helping the poorest of the poor” through its unique approach of

holistic ministry. James Cavnar explains. “Holistic ministry integrates the spiritual and the practical. Improving the living conditions of the poor is incomplete without sharing the Gospel with them. When we share the Gospel with those we are helping, we discover, as the Holy Father suggests, ‘joy in the gospel’ and truly see Jesus in the faces of the poor.” Organizations from around the world will be represented at the forum. In addition to Cross Catholic Outreach, there will be the City of Joy in China, Pontifical Cor Unum, the Pontifical Council for the New Evangelization, North American College,

RESTAURANT REVIEW EPSTEIN BY BARRY ?

Chef/Owners Pattie and Mark Mezzancello have created a faultless bistro dedicated to presenting 13 ways to prepare Prince Edward Island plump mussels. The standard menu begins with seven appetizers. We sampled five: a crab cake (all meat, no filler) with a horseradish mustard and ginger soy sauce, then red and golden roasted beet slices topped with a terrific goat cheese fritter, pistachios in a balsamic reduction. Plan on ordering clams casino, pancetta, diced peppers and onions in a shell with Parmesan and garlic as a rough-cut filling. A superior, tasty, textured seafood bisque featured brandy and sherry plus tomatoes and cream. Outstanding. We hadn’t experienced baked kale – a dry, flaky item with olive oil, sea salt and ground pepper — unusual, but a popular dish here. Mussels, each a serving of 1 ½ pounds of fresh Prince Edward Island’s plump gems, are flavor-infused by their complex ingredients and broths. Mussel Beach boasts 14 variations on the theme — we sampled six! Mariniere style featured shallots, garlic, onion, white wine and butter. Prosciutto style had caramelized onions, white wine, garlic and cream, while the French onion version had baked caramelized onions, Dijon mustard and corn bread. The Italian offering had squid, fresh fish, a red wine tomato sauce featuring roasted garlic and basil. Lobster bisque style had rich tomato while the Thai version had a very pungent curry-coconut base with lemongrass, garlic, ginger and jalapenos. We found each and every one to be a treasure treat! Four salads are presented. The ahi tuna with its cabbage, lo mein noodles and wasabi in a ginger soy vinaigrette was excellent. The listed Caesar with kale, romaine, croutons and Parmesan cheese had a key lime Caesar dressing that, while tasty, is nowhere near a true Caesar – mia culpa! We’ll try both the Malibu and Mandarin versions another day. The seven seafood items included the fine ahi tuna, a grouper, a mahi Oscar style, plump sea scallops (perfectly prepared) and a delightful pretzel-encrusted Scottish salmon – a winner! Also, try “The Kettle” with king crab legs, mussels, shrimp, scallops, clams, chorizo, corn and red potatoes in garlic wine sauce. A couple of items besides seafood are a Hawaiian ribeye and a sticky glazed chicken. For somewhat lighter fare choose from five sandwiches, all served with “Beach Fries.” FYI- Mussel Beach offers a full bar service, 24 white and 17 red wines plus four sparkling, by glass and bottle. Seven

martinis and six other cocktails are listed as are a dozen beers. For dessert, we had the dark chocolate mousse with fresh strawberries, salted caramel and whipped cream followed by a white chocolate bread pudding with berry compote. Tried “Crack Pie” – an oatmeal pie with vanilla bean ice cream. Finally, tiny doughnut balls fried with amaretto, cinnamon, sugar and crème anglaise. A very sweet way to end a fabulous dining experience. Mussel Beach Restaurant is open seven days. Try luncheon/dinner from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and until midnight thereafter. In addition to the standard menu, there are chef specials and a kids menu. Established in January of 2014, they seat 102 diners inside and 25 on the patio. We suggest that you … go and enjoy!

AND HERE’S WHY

T

he Academy summed up one of the most powerful statements in reaction to the apparent suicide of Robin Williams. “Genie, you’re free.” News of Robin Williams’ tragic and unforeseen death spread like wildfire across the airwaves and Internet. The loss of one of the world’s most beloved, comical and outwardly happy actors is still being digested in our souls. Our hearts not only go out to Robin Williams and his family, but also to those who have been moved by this iconic legend because of the joy he brought them both on and off the screens.

While Robin Williams’ life was cut short due to the alleged affects of clinical depression, his legacy will not only live on as one of the best comedians of all time, but also as the face and inspiration behind depression awareness

Robin Williams will be a hero not only for his comedic genius, but also for nearly 16 million Americans who are suffering from depression. People are talking more about depression – and I’d like to shed some light on an exceedingly common medical condition and ways to get treated holistically if you or a loved one is secretly suffering. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, depression is one of the most common mental disorders in the U.S., with an estimated 16 million U.S. adults experiencing at least one major depressive episode or bout of depressive symptoms between 2011 and 2012.

Depression means feelings of intense sadness. Lasting for weeks, months or years on end, those with depression may feel helpless, hopeless and worthless.

Common Symptoms of Depression: • Feelings of depression, especially in the morning • Fatigue • Lack of concentration or indecisiveness • Feelings of restlessness • Significant weight loss or weight gain • Trouble sleeping, or excessive sleeping • Lack of interest or pleasure in activities • Feelings of guilt or insignificance • Recurring thoughts of suicide or death Clinical depression is a mental illness that CAN BE TREATED – without potentially harmful drugs that can make matters even worse. I’ll never forget my patient Annette who entered my office feeling “off.” Periodically touching the walls of the hallway, she wasn’t sure of her balance, or really anything to be frank. “I’ve been depressed pretty much my whole life. It’s just that it’s gotten worse lately.” Annette continued, “My doctor changed my meds last December to a combination of Lexapro and Abilify but I still feel down,” Annette explained. Two out of three people treated for depression still have depressive symptoms.

This is called treatment-resistant depression, and drugs such as Abilify are typically added to augment the effects of antidepressants. Unfortunately, they have side effects. Annette gained nine pounds when on Symbyax in just three weeks. As it turned out, Annette not only had hypothyroidism, a classic cause of depression, but also was deficient in Vitamin D, which is yet another cause of treatment-resistant depression and weight gain. Before resorting to synthetic drugs to treat your depression, try adding supplements or foods with these essential vitamins, minerals and oils. Physician discretion is advised.
