PLIGHT OF THE
LIVING WAGE ARE WE WORKING
BY MONICA VICTOR
TOO HARD, FOR TOO LITTLE?
C
armen works 35 hours a week at Burger King, earning $8.25 an hour — $1 above the federal minimum wage and 32 cents above Florida’s minimum. She has no
kids. Only a few miles away, LaShonda works at a clothing store at least 25 hours a week for $7.50 an hour — 43 cents below Florida’s minimum wage. She’s a mother of five, so she depends on assistance from the federal government to make ends meet. Both women are ensnared in the raging national debate over the minimum wage. What was once just a topic for teenagers
has become, in today’s economy, one of the hot political issues. Democrats want to give Carmen and LaShonda a raise. Republicans say that may help some workers, but such a raise will cost others their jobs. Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that 3.8 million Americans labor at or below the minimum wage. Earlier this year, President Obama in his State of the Union address called on the GOP to join the Democrats to raise Americans wages from $7.25 to $10.10 an hour. In response the GOP says raising the minimum wage will not solve the poverty problem in America and may in fact worsen it.
Democrats propose:
• That raising the minimum wage will help struggling families and will not affect employment. • If the minimum wage is raised, the economy will receive an immediate boost. They anticipate that low wage workers will likely spend more since they make more money. • They believe that as many as 28 million workers would benefit from the increase, a majority of which are women.
Last February, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office released a report that projects … • A gradual raise in the federal minimum wage to $10.10 an hour would lift 900,000 people out of poverty.
Republicans contend:
• But, 500,000 people could potentially lose their jobs.

PLIGHT OF THE
LIVING WAGE While Carmen (the Burger King employee) would enjoy a raise, she fears that a raise will decrease her hours and overall take home less income. “I don’t like the fact that they didn’t raise the minimum wage but I can understand why,” she says. “It will be harmful to us workers because if they raise me at $10 an hour it doesn’t mean that they wouldn’t drop my hours to 10 or 20 hours a week.” “These companies are there to make money and they will cut everyone’s hours and hire more workers which will make it worse for me. I would love to make $10 an hour but 20 hours a week is not going to help me. If they were proposing an $8.50 or $9.00 an hour raise that would have been fine because they wouldn’t feel the need to cut anybody’s hours.” Carmen now works 35 hours a week at $8.25 an hour. Analysis by the Economic Policy Institute, a policy think tank that aims to include the needs of low-and middle income workers in economic discussions say, a $10.10 minimum wage would boost the incomes of 27.8 million workers.
While the federal minimum wage debate is at a standstill in Washington, some state leaders have already taken matters into their own hands, paying rates higher than the federal level. The minimum wage in the District of Columbia is $9.50, Oregon is $9.10, Washington currently labors at $9.32. California’s minimum wage is now at $9.00 and they recently passed a law to raise it to $10 by 2016. Alaska, Hawaii and Idaho offer the same minimum wage as the federal rate — $7.25. States with rates below the federal minimum wage include Arkansas ($6.25), Guam ($5.15 if employers have more than 6 employees) and Wyoming at ($5.15). In 2007 Congress amended the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1930 to raise the federal minimum wage gradually from $5.15 to $7.25. As the trend suggests, ever since 2007 to 2009, the federal minimum wage increased each year at increments of 70 cents. Had that trend continued into $2014, the minimum wage would probably be $10.05.
The breakdown of the Fair Minimum Wage Act of 2007 was as follows: • For work performed prior to July 24, 2007, the federal minimum wage is $5.15 per hour. • For work performed from July 24, 2007 to July 23, 2008, the federal minimum wage is $5.85 per hour. • For work performed from July 24, 2008 to July 23, 2009, the federal minimum wage is $6.55 per hour. • For work performed on or after July 24, 2009, the federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour.
But, last April, Congress shot down a bill to boost the minimum wage from $7.25 to $10.10. Meanwhile as we mourn the death of the minimum wage hike, most Americans struggle just to tread water. A mother in Florida struggles to put food on the table, a hotel worker in New York struggles to pay her rent and a student in Wyoming struggles to pay her tuition. Will the minimum wage rise or stay the same? To Carmen and LaShonda, what happens in Congress will literally change their lives.

nightmares to life.” Karen says. “We are after that mind-numbing panic that makes people question what is real and to give all those who enter a very entertaining night of sheer horror,” Billy adds. The Enigma Haunt delivers. The entire family is heavily involved in the production, from lighting, to ticketing, to security. The Groenevelds couldn’t be happier. “I’ve had friends who’ve brought their nephews this year who had never been to a haunted house. These are the things that we want to do – create great memories for people,” Billy says. “We wait at the bottom of the stairs to ask patrons how they like it. And to see them crying and shivering and all of a sudden see them smile, and asking each other did you see this, did you see that? That’s exactly why we do this. It’s a great feeling.” You too can get your pants scared off at the Abyss and the Realms of Terror. If you think it’s scary now, wait ‘til you see what they have in store next year. The Groenevelds are always looking for ways to intensify and add more haunts. Where do they see themselves in the next few years? “We’d like to get to a larger, more prominent location offering many more haunts,” Billy says. “Our plan includes how to take it to the next level each time, whether it’s through new electronics or new graphics. We get to do it through scares, creepiness, horrible smells and fear.” And, if you’re still wondering what to do this Halloween, The Groenevelds say: “Come and see us, you won’t be disappointed.” Patronizing the Enigma Haunt is a win-win. “We’ve always donated a portion of ticketing to wounded warriors,” Karen says. “We’re now working with Boca Helping Hands and Tri-County Animal Rescue. Anybody who brings in specific items for each charity on the weekend designated to them will receive a discount off the regular ticket price.” Doors open every weekend in October. This year’s dates of terror are from the very first Friday in October and will last until midnight, Nov. 1.Prices vary depending on the haunt that you want to explore.

illy Groeneveld still remembers his first haunted house experience. One Halloween while 6-year-old Billy was trick or treating, he came across a haunted house where the props were nothing more than a white sheet with a hole cut in it. He stuck his hand inside the hole to find brain made of spaghetti, with spaghetti sauce for blood. There were some eyeballs, a couple of spooky mirrors and flashing lights. When Billy walked out of the haunted house he was handed a hot dog. Billy thought this was the greatest holiday ever. Billy moved to South Florida. He and his wife, Karen, had four children. He continued the tradition so his kids and other kids in the neighborhood could experience what he had as a child. The word got out and their home quickly became the ultimate go-to house on Halloween. And, that’s exactly what the
Groenevelds wanted. “We had little props — an autopsy, a couple eyeballs that glowed in the dark — and my kids would jump in front of the trick or treaters to scare them. They loved the reaction and wanted to do it more and more,” Karen remembers. “We handed out candy in the beginning, and a couple of years before we went professional we gave out hotdogs and hamburgers and a soda.” “People had that same reaction I had that first day I was given that hotdog,” Billy says. “They would come back year after year, and people would, ask, ‘Are you giving away hotdogs? These are the best hotdogs in the world!’” As the Groeneveld kids got older, the crowds got larger and the production got bigger. “When we started out it was confined just to our garage. Then we spread out into the backyard. Once they started drilling into the banister on the inside we had to move it elsewhere,” Karen says. “We had over 500 people come through our house in one night. We started thinking about it going professional.” Realizing that this was becoming bigger than their house could accommodate, they moved out of their oceanfront home in Boynton Beach where it all started. Today, the permanent home of their spectacular haunted house, The Enigma Haunt is at 21069 S. Military Trail in Boca. The Enigma Haunt has delivered an enigmatic experience, for the past three years, outperforming itself each year, every weekend in October. “The Abyss is a complete blackout maze that goes into an abandoned mine shaft. It completely takes away your sight and forces you to use the other four senses,” Karen says. “Each step immerses patrons deeper into the unknown. It’s scary and people love it.” Then there’s the Realms of Terror. “This is a 16-room haunt. Every dimension plays on your most vivid nightmares through technically-advanced animation and computer-generated imagery, horrifying smells and almost 50 skilled actors, all of which culminate to bring those

RISK REWARD -VS-
Entrepreneurship and risk-taking almost always go hand in hand. If you’re starting your own business, you’ll have to be ready for the challenges and ups and downs that come with it. To begin and support your own business, you’ll have to put your career, personal finances and even your mental
health at stake. Abandoning a steady paycheck is what keeps most people from really diving into entrepreneurship full time. Here are five tips to help hedge the risk of starting your own business and transitioning from having a steady paycheck to going at it on your own.
KEEP YOUR FULL-TIME/PART-TIME JOB … AS YOUR BUSINESS GROWS, TRY TO SCALE FOR NOW: It’s less scary and stressful to start and run a business BACK AT YOUR CURRENT JOB: As your business when you aren’t relying on it to pay your bills. Starting a business is a rollercoaster and having the security of a full-time paycheck allows you to ease some of the risk. Sometimes it’s wise not to leave your current job before your new venture is successful and revenue producing. Otherwise it can lead to a volatile ride. At the same time it can be more difficult because you are spreading yourself thin, but you are providing a safety net for yourself, too. Most business ventures take months or even a couple of years to become profitable, so getting started while you have a steady income stream will take some of the burden off you as you navigate this new path and make mistakes.
starts to grow and make money, it can be challenging to balance your current job while making more time for your business. New businesses are intense and require extreme focus and dedication. If you’re not in the position to quit your full-time job, start thinking of new possibilities. Talk with your employer about working a day or two a week from home, or transition to contract work, which can allow for more flexibility. If your employer won’t budge, start looking at other options that will provide the steady income but more flexible hours you need.
KEEP BUILDING UP AND SAVING CAPITAL:
starts to make money it can be tempting to jump ship and leave your current job but before you make the big leap, you’re not home free just yet. While money is coming in, it’s probably just enough to get by, but not the kind of income needed to support you full time. As this is a crucial point in your business and you’ll need to put in the hours needed, it can be a good time to look into part-time work or something that allows you a paycheck but the ability to also have the time to focus on your business.
Most times when starting a business, you’re going to have to sacrifice some personal capital to make your venture work. Some entrepreneurs are able to start their ventures using external funding such as government grants, loans, angel investors or crowd funding campaigns. But many entrepreneurs also have to dive into their own bank accounts and personal savings to get started. Taking from your savings can be scary so it can be sensible to start living more prudently. Cut back, eat out less and find as many ways as possible to lighten spending which will allow you to keep putting funds into your business while being prudent with your savings. The rewards of entrepreneurship often outweigh the potential risks, but you have to see them for what they are — necessary obstacles, and have to be prepared to face the challenges and create new opportunities. You have to learn to be creative, prepared, have a strong mindset and push forward despite the storms. It is always difficult to figure when is the best moment to take the plunge, but in the end you’re gambling on yourself, and a true entrepreneur will take those odds any day.

NOT IN THE CLEAR … JUST YET: As your business
YOU DID IT!: CAfter lots of handwork and dedication you’re
finally earning enough money to support yourself and the business is running successfully. This is an extreme accomplishment. Though you might want to step back and take a breather, you now have to ramp it up and focus all of your efforts to your business. Having your own business isn’t like a steady paycheck, self-employment is a risk which means you’ll need to save money for the down times. The best way is saving money during the good cycles to be ready for the down ones.

I
see more social media headshots than most, and five out of every ten make me want to laugh, cry, or lose my lunch. I see headshots that are too close (showcasing wrinkles or acne), too far (I need to see your face), too sexy, grinning like a jack-o-lantern or scowling like a mass-murderer. Primarily though, I see headshots that simply are not suitable for the work they need to do.
EVERY PICTURE TELLS A STORY Like it or not, your headshot tells a story, so take a look at yours to see if it is telling the story you want it to tell. This has become a critically important part of establishing a credible professional image. As humans we are a very visual species, and in this new digital age, your headshot is invariably the first visual impression you make on headhunters and potential employers. A profile with a headshot will get many more clicks than a profile without one, and how professional and accessible you appear will impact the impressions of the recruiters who decide your interview fate. It’s safe to say that the people who come to your profile will form an opinion of you based on your headshot before they read anything you have written. Your next job interview could well be decided on how well your headshot to portrays the professional you. ARE YOU TRYING TO GET HIRED OR FIND A DATE? We all nurture different personas at work and at play. With a social media profile, this is
In recent studies, up to 90% of human resources people say they check out social media profiles, especially LinkedIn and Facebook, before inviting a candidate in for an interview. This means the wrong headshot can kill your chances of even talking on the phone stonedead. Is your headshot killing your chances for job offers before you even get the opportunity to interview?
done with your clothes and facial expression, and communicated through your headshot. You have to be able to separate these work/play personas, and recognize that the headshot that got you all those hits on your Match.com profile could be the kiss of death for your LinkedIn profile. Being seen as both professional (which implies competent) and friendly will encourage acceptance of the claims made within your profile, whereas a too casual or too sexy shot will call your judgment into question. CAN YOU GET AWAY WITH A DIY HEADSHOT? I look frightening in most photographs. It’s not that I look exactly like a creature from the crypt, it’s just that I’m naturally shy and a casual snapshot will usually catch me looking terrified. We all look better relaxed and smiling, and the beauty of digital cameras is that the shooter can keep shooting until you relax. While you want to come across looking like a friendly professional, the headshot doesn’t have to be taken by a professional. Because
we almost all need new headshots for our professional lives, a headshot photography partner shouldn’t be that difficult to find. UPGRADE YOUR HEADSHOT WHEN YOU LOOK AND FEEL THE BEST Summer is the best time to upgrade your social media headshots. You look happier and more relaxed because it’s summer, and for paler skins any kind of tan makes you look healthier. YOUR HEADSHOT IS THE HEADLINE In initial database searches, the first things recruiters see are your headshot and headline. They get a headshot and a 120-character thumbnail description about you. Your headline works as brief biography of the person behind the headshot. You have just these 120 characters to say who you are, so your headline should include the Target Job Title from your primary resume and the keywords that most succinctly capture what you do. You will then have about ten words with which to describe your key skills.

Other horror cruise activities include Dining With The Dead, the Zombie Ball, Killer Cocktail Party and some surprises we don’t wish to reveal. “Thousands of passengers have walked through the Deck of Death so far and the feedback has been nothing but positive,” said SVPSales & Marketing Glenn Ryerson. “Anyone who says they weren’t afraid at times walking through the Deck of Death, we present their facial expression in a photo which shows otherwise.”

RESTAURANT REVIEW BY BARRY EPSTEIN
BURT & MAX’S
T
asty, complimentary mini corn breads were initially served. The standard dinner menu commenced with a roster of 11 appetizers. We had delicious short rib empanadas with Manchego cheese, heirloom tomato salsa and aji crema – rich and flavorful. A unique dish of “onion soup” dumplings containing gruyere cheese and chives was applauded as was a basket of crispy calamari rings and zucchini chips with both pomodoro and tartar sauces, then lettuce wraps with shrimp, cellophane noodles, bell peppers, carrots, crushed peanuts and bib lettuce with a tasty peanutlime dipping sauce – cool and crisp! Under the heading of “Soups and Salads”, we delighted in the roasted tomato soup, then, this daily special of a superb mushroom soup … chock full of small mushrooms caps. The treatment of Caesar salad was a crisp portion of romaine, padano plus piquillo pepper bits, garlic and herb croutons in a very simple dressing. If you like the taste of anchovy, ask your server and receive several fresh anchovy samples to add to the fine salad. We enjoyed the salad of roasted golden and red beets with goat cheese, toasted pistachios plus radicchio and arugula greens. We also tried the Max’s Classic chopped salad – a complex mix of nine ingredients in a red wine vinaigrette – very interesting. A house salad, cobb salad, BLT wedge and tuna tartami complete the list. We viewed the menu of 13 “Large Plates” and chose to taste the oak-grilled rainbow trout, quite sweet to the taste … then the Branzino – a Mediterranean special fish done to perfection – both are winners! The slow braised beef short ribs with vegetables accompaniment is a rich, robust meal in itself. Salmon, fish tacos, crab cakes, roast chicken and meatloaf are among the other choices listed. The “Vegetable Sides” offered include fine wood-roasted mushrooms, tender and tasty. The Brussels sprouts and the served broccoli are a bit too al dente. Sautéed spinach is a good bet as is the Yukon gold mashed potatoes. Note the standard menu features five jumbo sandwich choices as well six wood fired pizza selections – all for us to try another visit. In addition there are eight dishes listed as “Eat Well, Be Well” … heart healthy choices. A rather extensive “Kids Menu” covers six entrees plus ice cream desserts. There are a half dozen or so of their chef’s specials – changed daily. This visit we sampled a perfect strip steak, done medium rare, then Burt and Max’s version of paella – shrimp, clams, mussels plus fish and scallops – a nice dish but what we found lacking was the golden, tangy use of saffron that enriches both the rice and the broth. There are seven dessert offerings – we tried three. The season cobbler (apple) was sweet and tangy, the warm chocolate bomb was rich, molten and superior, while their mixed berry crème Brule pie was unusually different and quite tasty.
General Manager Burt Rappoport and Steve Mann lead a staff of welltrained and knowledgeable people – we found our server, Randy, to be exemplary. There is a full bar, seven champagnes and sparkling choices, 30 white and 39 red wines, by both glass and bottle. A dozen specialty drinks and 20 select bottled beers plus six bottled sodas are listed. This bustling bistro seats 150 inside, another 100 on the patio and is open seven days, Monday through Thursday from 11:30 a.m to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday until 11 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Burt and Max’s is a winner – suggest you … Go and enjoy!

HOLISTIC HEALTH
BY KENNETH N. WOLINER, M.D. NATURAL DESICCATED THYROID PROVES TO BE OPTIMAL ALTERNATIVE APPROACH TO COMBATTING HYPOTHYROIDISM Kenneth N. Woliner, M.D., board-certified doctor and holistic medicine expert, unravels the secret success rate of Natural Thyroid, an alternative hypothyroidism treatment vs. the long-standing synthetic thyroid drug, levothyroxine sodium.
N
The secret is out, and Natural Thyroid is in.
atural Desiccated Thyroid, or NDT, an alternative hypothyroidism treatment, has been suppressed from the market for too long. While Synthroid (levothyroxine sodium), a synthetic, hormone-like bio-equivalent to the natural hormone thyroxine, has dominated the market for decades and the culprit of countless side-effects, the natural approach to
hypothyroidism is finally getting its chance to show its worth. More than 12 percent of the U.S. population will develop a thyroid condition in their lifetime – a number surmounting to more than 20 million Americans with some form of thyroid disease, according to the American Thyroid Association. Women are five to eight-times more likely to have thyroid
problems than men. So ladies, this article is especially for you. Millions of people with this prevalent condition have been yearning for effective treatment, yet for decades Natural Desiccated Thyroid treatments have been put on the backburner, overpowered by the marketing efforts backing the expensive synthetic thyroid drugs.
Introducing the Tomato Effect Just as the placebo effect means you think it works, but it doesn’t. The ‘tomato effect’ means you think it doesn’t work, but it does. The term was coined by Dr. James S. Goodwin, and referred to the misconception that tomatoes were poisonous and, consequently, not consumed in the U.S. until the late 1800s. However, the Italians ate tomatoes in astonishing numbers and, as research developed, they proved to have significant health benefits. Can anyone say pizza? Thus, NDT may have fallen victim to the ‘tomato effect’ – as a natural treatment to regulating thyroid disorders that many believed was ineffective, when in fact, its numbers continue to prove otherwise. In early 2013, the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism published a doubleblind crossover study showing that patients preferred NDT over levothyroxine by over a 2:1 margin.
So why are doctors prescribing a lesseffective, more expensive T4-only drug, levothyroxine sodium, when patients respond better on natural thyroid? Unfortunately, money, bias and ignorance have stuck many doctors into a “one test, one pill” treatment mentality. Some Natural Desiccated Thyroid brands marketed in the U.S. and Canada includes Nature-Throid, WP Thyroid, Armour Thyroid, and ERFA Thyroid. Based on my professional experience in holistic medicine, natural thyroid extract is well tolerated by my patients; especially when patients on Synthroid continue to experience symptoms of fatigue, weight gain, or brain fog. I advise exploring Natural Desiccated Thyroid treatment, especially when your symptoms remain, despite having lab tests “in range.” Don’t let the ‘tomato effect’ affect you!
