MONEY IN

THE

BANK BY MATTHEW STEWART

W

ould you give a stranger access to your bank account? Would you let YOUR future depend on the decision-making abilities of a friend of a friend? Some businesses are doing just that with their retirement plans. In a recent interview with NAPA-net’s Stephen Sullivan, Brett Shofner of Work Plan Retire discussed the pros and cons of using a request for proposal. “They have a relationship or they have a license but they’re not experts,” says Brett Shofner,

senior vice president at American Portfolios in Delray Beach, Fla. “Working on a retirement plan might be 2% of their business. They happen to know a CEO or a CFO as golf buddies. They typically charge huge fees but they’re not doing much.“ Taking the time to conduct your due diligence when looking for a plan adviser is a necessity. More importantly, verifying the value of the adviser on your plan is a fiduciary responsibility. Take the time, do the work, reap the benefit.

For the full article, check out the NAPA-net interview here: http://www.napa-net.org/Portals/1/sullivan%20from%20NNTM-FALL-2014-FINAL-low.pdf. Matthew Stewart lives in Delray Beach, Florida, and was born and raised in Philadelphia. Matthew initially joined American Portfolios after earning his degree in finance from the College of Business Administration at the University of Pittsburgh. He began building his practice at Morgan Stanley and then discovered his desire to specialize in guiding people to a successful retirement, focusing on the development of strategies for a secure retirement for clients. Matthew is also an active member within the Delray Beach community, serving on the committee for Relay for Life, while also remaining an active member of the Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce. In his spare time, he enjoys playing ice hockey and golf. Matthew currently holds his series 66, series 7, and life, health, and variable annuity licenses.

COILED GOODS

PROFILE

The vaping industry gets a little help from Boca

T

he new craze these days is vaping, and Oliver Degirmen is dedicated to making one aspect of the act easier for vapers, the people who smoke e-cigarettes to enjoy bursts of nicotine vapor — the coiling. Vaping is the new alternative to smoking cigarettes and are called e-cigarettes or e-cigs. In fact, vaping has become so popular that Oxford Dictionary has deemed the word “vape” as 2014’s Word of the Year. Vaping is the act of inhaling or exhaling vapor produced by an e-cigarette or similar device. A new subculture of smokers has emerged and business is booming. Last year, the e-cigarette business grossed over $1 billion. Oliver got into the

business a few months ago. His motive? “To make vaping easier for the vaping community,” he says. But that’s not the business Oliver dreamed of as a child. Growing up in Montreal, Oliver always wanted to chase storms. At 10 years old he and his family migrated to the United States. Four years later at 14, he chased

his first storm, and 10 years after that he chased his second storm— Hurricane Andrew. At 15 years old, Oliver got an opportunity that he says he just couldn’t pass up— and so a jeweler was born. Fifteen years later, although Oliver isn’t chasing storms, he’s chasing other dreams. Oliver is using the tools of his jewelry business to create another business — atomizer tools and the coiler. This tool helps vapers make the coil, which is the most important component of all e-cigarettes. The coiler is basically the heating element in an e-cigarette. It is the part that turns liquid into vapor when it comes in contact with the coil. “Everybody out there is using screwdrivers and the little rods, little things here

and there,” he says. “So I made this tool to simplify the way to make electronic cigarettes, a simpler way to make the coils. I want to make it easier for the vape community.” Making the coil the oldfashioned way is a long and tedious process. Not only was the old-fashioned way time consuming, but they also took longer to heat up. So in order to save the vape community time and to deliver a more enjoyable experience, Oliver created a more efficient method to make the coils, aptly named “the coiler.” “The coiler is a high-quality vaping tool kit designed for beginners and experienced users,” he says. “It is manufactured to provide you with ease of access to make custom coils for all dripping atomizers.”

• Heavy duty steel design • Solid wood handle with palm grip • Two three-jaw keyless chucks • Three steel rods measuring 1-2.5mm • Customized velvet pouch • Free shipping (U.S.) but for all international orders, there is a $5 per coiler shipping fee. oday’s market is inundated with new products and brands emerging each day. So, how do you standout and increase sales? Here are some tips to improve sales performance:

Know your target market and customer:

Understand your business, clients and target market. What do you do best? Who needs what you do? How much are they willing to pay? What’s the best way to approach these prospects? By defining current customers you’ll most likely be able to identify more. Educate, give back and position yourself as the go-to person in your market.

Get personal and build relationships:

People want to do business with people they know and trust. They are buying into you as much as the product or service you’re selling. Keep in contact with clients, hop on the phone or meet in person. By creating relationships with clients you’ll create customer loyalty, which leads to repeat business.

Sell more to existing customers:

Follow up:

Create an inventory and identify which clients are the most loyal and profitable for you. Take action to find better ways to reach and offer them more. Listen, understand and appreciate these customers, as they are the drivers in your business pipeline.

Communicate value:

What makes you valuable to customers? Strong personal brands have great stories and offer value to clients. Let others know what makes your business special and communicate to customers why it is beneficial for them.

Megan is the founder of Louise & Eleanor, an online women’s accessories boutique, an advisor to a coworking space in Boca Raton and a partner in a Silicon Valley real estate investment firm.

One of the best ways to increase and convert potential sales is follow up. Create balance by following up in a diligent but respectful manner. It’s important to stay front and center in the customers mind, showing you care and their business matters to you. There will be trial and error needed to find the strategy that is best, but keep at it. Being passionate about your company and bringing value to customers will position you well from the start.

Ten Terrible LinkedIn Slip Ups

T

here are glaring mistakes that can be made using LinkedIn, and the costs of making them can be painfully high. Realize that you often have only one chance

NOT KNOWING YOUR TARGET MARKET

1.

This error is surprisingly common even though LinkedIn is a “professional” network. A few explanations might include: lack of planning, believing that it is enough to simply “post” a resume or dismissing it as an unimportant step. However, how does one craft an engaging profile for an undefined market? Imagine preparing a speech for a mystery audience—one you know nothing about. The consequences could be devastating and extremely embarrassing if you deliver an inappropriate or off-topic speech.

FAILURE TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE ACTIONS OF YOUR CONNECTIONS

2.

Given our busy schedules, it is easy to overlook simple courteous expressions to members of our network. Do you thank new connections for joining your network? Do you acknowledge and reciprocate to someone that has endorsed or recommended you? How long does it take to decide if you are going to accept or reject someone that is seeking to join your network? These can be missed opportunities to initiate or develop a promising connection. Create a template message page that can be utilized to message others’ actions and then

IN

personalize the message with the person’s name. Everyone likes to hear “Thank you.”

USING RESUME VERBIAGE

3.

Your profile should be written in the first person so that potential connections see you as someone that they can talk to and with whom they can grow a relationship. Think of it as a conversation with future clients. Also, a resume is mostly about what positions you held and what you did there. Clients are more interested in what benefits you offer or what solutions you can provide to them.

BAD PHOTO OR NO PHOTO

4.

This mistake falls in the category of relatability. Clients want to know who they are dealing with before they will fully commit. It is a deadly error to appear unprofessional, uninvolved or unsuccessful. Present yourself in the best way possible. Hire a pro to get it done right.

COPYCAT HEADLINE

5.

Nearly 90% of the professionals on LinkedIn use a headline (the description area under your name at the top of the profile) that highlights a position or title. Doing so makes you indistinguishable from others with that same title. Instead, emphasize your benefits so that your connections will know how

to make a favorable impression. Therefore, it is important to be aware of these pitfalls so that they can be avoided—especially with new connections. In order to they will profit from working with you versus someone else. Amazingly, few use the full 120 characters that are available in the headline. It is the most important real estate on your profile, since it follows you every time you post, comment or are Googled.

INCOMPLETE PROFILE

6.

This is another common oversight. It conveys a perception that either you were too lazy to provide more details or thought it unimportant. High-value clients are going to want know your schooling, credentials and type of experiences—in detail. Lacking such information, they will seek out another professional.

NO RECOMMENDATIONS

7.

I think it is wise to have at least five recommendations. The more specific they are about what services or results were realized, the more impressive they will be for those that view them. How do you get them? Ask. Inform the person that is recommending you to write the recommendation using certain key words so it helps your search engine ranking as well.

FAILURE TO USE THE LINKEDIN PUBLISHER FEATURE

8.

LinkedIn made a remarkable change early in 2014 by extending the ability to publish

SUMMARY, LinkedIn is an added hourly. Worldwide, an additional

These long posts (or extended blogs) become a permanent part of the profile and help to establish an expert persona. No other platform has this dynamic feature and it has become wildly popular among LinkedIn users.

NOT POSTING REGULARLY

9.

It is simply not enough to just have a profile on LinkedIn. Social selling involves three stages: finding, connecting and engaging. You need to be social. Create conversations with your connections. Thank them for endorsing you or commenting on your posts. Remember, the ultimate goal for any social media campaign is to create long-lasting relationships. This takes time, shared value and trust.

FISH DISH PRESENTS

THE MIAMI MARLINS’ 2015 SEASON PREVIEW

14

THE SOUTH FLORIDA PALM - PROFESSIONAL AND LEISURE MAGAZINE

By Mitchel Litt

M

arlins fans, I hope you’re excited about the upcoming 2015 baseball season, I know I am! Some familiar faces from 2014 will be absent from the 25man roster on opening day (April 6), but have no fear. The Marlins have done some serious upgrading all over the diamond. Giancarlo Stanton’s $325 million deal was big news. The 25 year old signed a contract this offseason, not only making him the highest paid baseball player, but the highest paid athlete in all of sports history. But they were just getting started. Second base need a permanent owner. Last year there was a revolving door at the position, and the Marlins went right for Dee Gordon. The speedster came over from the Los Angeles Dodgers, having had an All-Star season in which he led the Major League in triples (12) as well as stolen bases (64). This acquisition of the Windermere, Florida native also gives the team the ability to move Christian Yelich up to the 2 hole in the batting order – a spot he is much better suited for with big Stanton batting third. Miami also acquired starting pitcher Mat Latos from the Cincinnati Reds. Latos, who graduated from Coconut Creek High School and spent a year at Broward College, is

entering the seventh year of his Major League career with a 3.34 lifetime ERA. While he spent some time on the disabled list last season, the 6-foot-6 Latos is ready to get back on the mound and intimidate hitters while wearing a Miami Marlins uniform. The Fish were looking for someone with championship pedigree to propel forward an infield that lacked in power numbers in 2014. They found just what they were looking for in Fort Lauderdale native Michael Morse. The new Marlins first baseman has hit as many as 31 home runs in a season and is fresh off a World Series title with the San Francisco Giants. Morse crushed a game-tying solo home run in game five of the National League Championship series last season against the St. Louis Cardinals as a pinch hitter in the eighth inning. They eventually won that game with a walk-off home run by Travis Ishikawa in the ninth, sending Morse and the Giants to the World Series. The Marlins gave up Sporting News’ 2014 Comeback Player of the Year Casey Mcgehee at third base, but replaced him with a seasoned veteran over at the hot corner. Martin Prado came over from the New York Yankees to man third base for the Marlins in a trade that sent the struggling Nathan Eovaldi and Garret

Jones to the big apple. The Marlins also got a solid and flexible pitcher out of the deal in David Phelps, a right hander who we may see in the starting rotation come April. The only thing this group of phenoms in the outfield consisting of Yelich, Marcell Ozuna and Stanton needed was an MLB-tested fourth outfielder to round out the group. The Fish signed Ichiro Suzuki, who is closing in on 3,000 hits and has over a .315 career batting average. The future hall of famer understands his role as the fourth outfielder, but more importantly the role of teaching this young, star-studded outfield how to play the game the right way and how to reach their full potential. An exceptionally active offseason was exactly what the Marlins faithful needed. We got that and more including important trades, key free-agent signings. and most importantly making the right deal to land Stanton in a Miami Marlins uniform for a long time to come. This season is going to be an exciting one, see you at Marlins Park! P.S.: Oh, and did I mention Jose Fernandez is expected back just before the All-Star break?

The Miami Marlins play their first game at home on Monday, April 6 against the Atlanta Braves. THE SOUTH FLORIDA PALM - PROFESSIONAL AND LEISURE MAGAZINE

COMMUNITY TABLE

A

new restaurant in Boca Raton recently opened that caters to the Florida Atlantic University family as well as community, business people and professionals looking for a quick bite at a more than reasonable price. Andrew Stellino of the renowned Stellino family created Community Table at 1901 N.W. 2 Ave. between Glades Road and 20th street in a nondescript shopping center. Their menu features pizza, pasta, pints, paninis, hot dogs and specialty tacos, along with Yukon gold fries, topped off by homemade chocolate chip cookies and mini cannolis. The eclectic menu allows you to mix and match toppings on pizzas, paninis, spaghetti and tacos. There are three kinds of pasta: spaghetti, fettucine and rigatoni, with choice of tomato, Alfredo or pesto sauce. The slice, pastas and paninis have a choice of 13 different toppings at 75 cents each. Other toppings at $1 each have 10 other choices and the $2 toppings each have eight different selections. Finally the $3 toppings consist of four more items. There are 5 different Angus beef hot dogs to choose from, including Mexican, Italian, American, Asian and Colombian, while the specialty tacos, going one for $2.50 or three for $6 features choice of chicken, Angus steak or shrimp, paired with southwest, Mexican, Asian or shrimp salad with guacamole. Five specialty paninis, five specialty pizzas, three specialty pasta dishes and four different salads complete the menu with choice of chicken, Angus steak and shrimp. Eleven craft beers and four different wines, three Nespresso coffee flavors, along with nine soft drinks will quench your thirst. The service is superb, matched by the taste we had of most items on the menu. Known as the home of the $1 slice, $8 pizzas and $3 pints of beer, it’s no wonder it is popular with the cash strapped FAU

students and a delight to others who are on limited budgets. Don’t let the low prices fool you. Each of the made to order items are as tasty as you will find anywhere and so much better than going to a fast food chain. Once you try Community Table, you will

be back again and again. They also deliver with a minimum order of $15 for a $3 charge. Hours are Monday through Thursday 11 a.m. to midnight, and Friday and Saturday until 2 a.m. Check out the website, communitytbl.com or call 561-672-7854.

he American Board of Physician Specialties, the official certifying body of the American Association of Physician Specialists, Inc., announces that Kenneth N. Woliner, M.D., of Boca Raton, Florida, officially completed certification in integrative medicine through the American Board of Integrative Medicine, an ABPS Member Board Certification. Formally qualified to present himself as an integrative medicine specialist, Dr. Woliner has mastered the specialty experience and knowledge as well as professional commitment to adhere to the ABPS medical code of ethics. Integrative medicine reaffirms the importance of the practitioner-patient relationship, focusing on the person as a whole, through evidence, and making use of all therapeutic approaches, including mainstream drugs and surgery, but also holistic approaches of behavior change, diet, exercise and vitamin supplementation, to achieve optimal

health and healing. Graduating from the third-largest nationally recognized multi-specialty certifying organization in the U.S., Woliner is thrilled to have completed this certification and continue his holistic practice. “It’s imperative to merge mainstream medical therapies with complementary and alternative medicine that has been developed based on high-quality scientific evidence of safety and effectiveness,” Woliner said. “Every person’s medical needs are unique, and using only conventional medication is unrealistic in most cases.” Woliner founded Holistic Family Medicine in Boca Raton, Florida, to bring healing and integrative medical care to patients everywhere. From thyroid disease and hair loss to diabetes and candida, Dr. Woliner is distinguished for his 80-minute patient examinations, placing emphasis on listening to each

patient’s medical history to determine the best therapy for their needs. Specializing in hard-to-treat conditions, Woliner is a firm believer that no two patients are the same. Instead of jumping to conclusions and passing patients a prescription, Woliner helps his patients live a healthy, holistic lifestyle, prescribing treatments that include vitamins, supplements, nutritional guidelines, exercise regimes and more. “It’s all about unity of the mind, body and spirit,” Woliner said. “I combine state-of-the-art conventional medical treatments with alternative therapies derived from cultures and ideas from centuries ago as well as new techniques with proven effectiveness.” For more information about Dr. Woliner and Holistic Family Medicine, visit holisticfamilymed.com.
