WHEN BIG BANKS SAY NO, ALTERNATIVE LENDERS SAY
YES
Who’s lending and how to get it
R
BY MONICA VICTOR
ight now – someplace, somewhere in the United States – a small business owner is thinking of expanding, a young college grad is dreaming of opening a business and a small business perhaps a mom and pop breakfast shop is tanking. Regardless of the scenario, money is needed to get them all going. A few years ago it would’ve been easier to make that trip to the bank to borrow money. But, in the wake of the Great Recession of 2007, the pockets of many Americans dried up and so did that of many of these lending institutions. As a result, banks are in the process of getting rid of bad debts and are more selective in who they dish out their cash to. You may remember that it was their lax lending that caused the housing bubble to burst a few years ago. Lenders were qualifying subprime consumers for mortgages, consumers who clearly couldn’t afford to pay back their loans. It backfired and the entire country suffered the backlash. Lenders have gotten tight with their
Here are the pros of non-traditional lending: •Your chances of qualifying for a loan is pretty high •You will get approved quickly •Your credit score does not have to be perfect •You do not have to put up collateral

money and many of them need salvaging themselves. The Great Recession left in its wake the closure of numerous banks. Today, only 6,799 FDIC-insured commercial banks are left standing. Economists attribute the record low numbers to a sluggish economy, a decline in the value of real estate, slim profits, low interest rates and the imposition of stricter regulations by Washington to prevent the recurrence of the events that caused the financial crisis. In 2010 the Obama administration passed the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act law that place major restrictions on the financial industry. One of the main purposes of Dodd-Frank among others is to protect consumers from predatory lending, the same kind of practices that crashed the housing market in 2008. And, because traditional lenders now face regulatory hurdles as set forth by the Dodd-Frank, non-traditional lenders have stepped up to the lending plate. But, at a higher cost to borrowers.
But to outweigh the risks involved: •Your interest rates will be higher than perhaps what a bank would charge •You may be required to give a stake in your company •Borrowers are expected to pay back the loan in a shorter period than if they were approved by a bank.
So where do you now seek capital for startups and financing? Here are some non-traditional lenders:
SMALL BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION LOANS These loans are guaranteed by the federal government and are viable options especially if you do not qualify for a regular business loan. Congress implemented the SBA loan in 2010 to provide access to lending and financial support to up and coming entrepreneurs and small businesses that are in financial trouble. Last year, more than $50 million in SBA loans were provided on a daily basis to small businesses. According to the Small Business Administration, they can help facilitate a loan for you with a third party lender, guarantee a bond, or help you find venture capital. Payments on SBA loans are usually low and stretch over
a longer period. To qualify: • You must be in operation to make a profit • You must be the operator of your own business and have reasonable owner equity to invest • Your business must fall within the size guidelines set by the SBA • You must use alternative financial resources, including personal assets, before seeking financial assistance.
BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT COMPANIES Created by Congress in 1989, these businesses are specifically designed to invest in small and upcoming businesses. BDC’s lend money to businesses that are on the verge of collapse. There are nearly 30 BDC’s a steady increase from the four that existed nine years ago. Here’s how BDC’s work. •Investors want a stake in the company as it grows
•They lend to consumers with poor credit ratings •They reap high returns •Ninety percent of their profits are passed on to their shareholders •They borrow at low interest rates •They operate under a tax-free status Financial advisors warn to pursue this one with caution as it can be risky. Before you invest in a BDC be sure to do extensive research.
MERCHANT CASH ADVANCE With this type of financing borrowers are given quick access to cash. •Borrowers receive a lump sum of money in exchange for a portion of the credit card sales they make in the future until they recover their money •Borrowers need not have a good credit score
•They do not need collateral to secure one of those loans •Interest rates are usually higher than what the banks would charge •The loans are borrowed on a short term basis, usually 12 month or less
BUSINESS CREDIT CARD Plastic can be a handy salvation tool for businesses especially if their credit is still in good standing. And with everything else it has its pros and cons. Benefits: •The access to cash is quick
Drawbacks: •Your credit limit might be limited especially if you have a poor payment history •Interest rates and penalty fees are usually very high
PEER-TO-PEER LENDING As the name suggests, peer-to-peer lending is seeking money from friends, family, acquaintances and even strangers over crowdfunding platforms online. When borrowing from family and friends, access to cash is usually
quick. Repayment can be flexible and interest rates are usually low. Proceed with caution though. Hopefully money does not come between you and your family and friends.

BUSINESS
PROFILE
argeaux Nelson owns a public relations firm aptly named “GeauxGetter.” The go-to girl for social media, blog and public relations content and management, she currently runs her own PR firm solo, crafting press releases and blogs, editing videos and updating various social media platforms for her clients’ businesses. Nelson is a public relations specialist who has implemented strategic PR programs for both national and local campaigns including Dunkin’ Donuts, Staples, “I Know That Voice” Documentary, and numerous small businesses across the country. Content created by Margeaux has been published in The Los Angeles Times, The SunSentinel, South Florida Business Journal, The Independent Florida Alligator, HerMANual.com, and many more. And she’s only 23. Nelson graduated from the University of Florida with a Bachelor of Science in public relations. During her academic career she graced the President’s Honor Roll eight times and graduated summa cum laude in 2013. Her character and her academic achievement landed her the prestigious Florida Public Relations Association Award given by the faculty and dean for outstanding academic excellence, service and character at UF. Prior to venturing out into the entrepreneurship world, Margeaux played an integral role in the strategic planning and management of multiple businesses across the United States. “I’ve always had a knack for leadership and management,” Nelson said. “I began to envision what I could really do for businesses if I had free reigns to run them as I saw fit – so I thought, why wait to start my own company? Why not now?” Nelson then embarked on a new business venture, adding entrepreneur to her already dazzling resume. What will she name it? “I was in the Keys supporting my dad in a golf tournament,” she recalls. “At the time I had a lot on my plate. I was working for a PR firm by day and editing video by night.” While discussing her entrepreneurial dreams, her mom then commented, “Margeaux, you’re such a go getter.” To which Nelson replied: “Mom, that’s it, that’s the name of my business!” The Geaux- Getter was born. “I love the dual meaning,” she said. “Not only is Geaux Getter your go-to girl to execute all of your business’ public relations and social media needs, but it’s also a play on words – I am a ‘geaux getter’ – or ‘Marathon Margeaux’ as my grandma calls me, since I don’t stop until the job is done, and it is done right.” Considering all of her accomplishments and aspirations, Margeaux is without a doubt living up to her name. She brainstormed different business concepts. “Initially I wanted to specialize strictly in social media, even though I had an extensive background in public relations, from strategic brand management and media pitching to press releases and video editing,” she says. “Because I could do it all, I decided to expand my business model. I create websites; build blogs, craft press releases, manage social media networks, and edit videos. I even utilize my acting and public speaking background to take on the role as the company spokesmodel in those videos. I love that I can offer my clients so much more, while maintaining a personalized custom plan.” Her clients are from various backgrounds – from fine artists and holistic doctors, to medical supply companies, real estate agents and fashion stylists. Complete client satisfaction is her top priority and so Nelson makes it her business to learn their fields. “What I love about public relations is you can really tap into a lot of different industries,” she says. “After extensive research, I become an expert in each field, and all the content that I produce is in accordance to their industry. It’s thrilling to have knowledge of so many different industries.”
South Florida’s Business News Makers and Risk Takers
Nelson learned well and is a role model herself. She encourages those consumed with fear of pursuing their dreams to break the chains. “Don’t be afraid,” she says. “If you fear following your heart, you’re just going to live an unsatisfied life. Set your goals and set them high. Don’t be afraid to be a little selfish and focus on your career, especially while you’re young. But do not forget to keep your relationships with your loved ones just as strong as your career pursuits. It’s important to do all of those things that will make you happy so you can look back without any regrets.” It isn’t any wonder that her motto is: “Why not me?” “I frequently see amazing being doing inspiring things… and I’m ready to be one of them. I’m eager to grow my business and follow all of my passions full steam ahead so I can really make a difference in this crazy world,” Nelson said. Nelson is dedicated to fulfilling her dreams and helps others fulfill theirs. If your dreams involve going into business or your business is in need of a public relations and social media expert, Margeaux Nelson the Geaux Getter is your go-to girl. ‘Geaux’ for it! Why not you?

Should a small business owner care about LinkedIn?
W
hen I hear the question, “Should a small business owner care about LinkedIn?” I immediately respond, “Yes, of course.” Since I am a small business owner that has benefitted greatly from using the world’s No. 1 social platform for business, the answer is direct. I realize, however, that there are those who are still outside of LinkedIn wondering if it has staying power and really is applicable to their business situation. This article provides added evidence for those who remain on the fence or are unconvinced that LinkedIn might be beneficial or helpful in important ways. First, I suggest that its rapid growth over the past two to three years is reason enough for engagement. Forbes Magazine has awarded
LinkedIn the distinction of being the fastest growing technology company for 2012 and 2013. Note the word technology. That denotes a much larger universe than say, social media. It’s truly significant that Google, Facebook or Apple isn’t the company being identified by Forbes but I’d bet that the common public perception is that either one of these giants greatly surpassed the growth of LinkedIn. (Google actually ranked number 17!) See Forbes’ 2013 chart below.
Source: http://www.forbes.com/sites/tomiogeron/2013/06/05/americas-fastest-growing-tech-companies-2013/
In addition, LinkedIn’s membership has grown 3.5 times since 2011 (90 million to nearly 310 million currently). The combination of these metrics strongly suggests that LinkedIn represents a potent market force that should be on any businessperson’s radar. Lastly, LinkedIn is expected to double in membership size to roughly 600 million over the next few years. Small business owners have been extended access to new features during this growth spurt as well. Most recently, all members were allowed the ability to publish short articles prominently on LinkedIn. This was formerly a domain for only “LinkedIn influencers” like Bill Gates or Richard Branson. Members can also post their own video
or power point presentations since the platform is much friendlier to the visually stimulating environment that exists on Facebook, for example. In summary, there are several ways in which the small business owner can flourish on LinkedIn. Marketing features are plentiful now and all are accessible to each and every member. LinkedIn’s sheer growth cycle has meant that it has become more accepted worldwide and a LinkedIn profile is a credibility factor even on Google. Innovation has trended to be inclusive rather than exclusive for the normal entrepreneur. All in all, time spent learning LinkedIn’s full array of social selling tools will benefit any business or person—large or small.

GIANCARLO STANTON The not-so-gentle giant By Wesley Wright
G
iancarlo Stanton has developed into quite a renowned talent for the Miami Marlins, due largely in part to the power he can show from the plate. The 24-year California native averaged an astounding 424 feet on his home runs during the first half of the season. He also hit the second longest home run in Major League Baseball, a 484-foot blast during an April 4 game versus the San Diego Padres. If Stanton manages to make solid contact with the ball, it’s flying quickly in any number of directions, even if it isn’t a homer. He led Major League in average [ball] speed off bat, at around 110 miles an hour. Stanton has led the NL in home runs and RBI at points this season. At six-foot-six, Stanton has the arm length to generate power that most other batters cannot. He really got behind a ball in the most recent home run derby. Stanton, who led more homers than any other NL batters in the first round, hit one ball an estimated 510 feet. To put that in perspective, an entire football field is 360 feet (120 yards). Marlins Fans want Stanton to stick around, let’s hope he wants the same. Many think he’ll go, but we’re confident that he’s made a home for himself in South Florida and is a fish for life! In the meantime, we’ve got a playoff race to win...

RESTAURANT REVIEW BY BARRY EPSTEIN
L
ocated in the atrium on the ground floor inside of the Cendyn/Wells Fargo bank building, M.E.A.T. Eatery & Tap Room is the newest addition to the Boca Raton dining scene. The eclectic menu boasts unusual options and micro-brewed soda selections of cola, lemon and lime, black cherry, ginger ale and more. Unlike some other fast casual spots, after placing your order and getting your beverage, servers will bring your food selections right to your table or booths, which are private and cushioned for comfortable dining. Seating is nestled in the atrium lobby of the building with easy access from the front and rear of the building. Partners Tom Smith and chef George Patti also own and operate Southern Asian Latin Tastes Fusion Cuisine and Cana Lounge in Islamorada and will be opening another M.E.A.T. location in Key West in the coming months. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, this location will service the bank building tenants as well as local fans. Chef Patti goes the extra mile with specialty handmade condiments, which are unusual to say the least in a refreshing way. Specialties include their mango chipotle ketchup along with the beer and caraway seed mustard with a touch of horseradish. They go a little further with their BBQ sauce which includes root beer and molasses. The overall theme is farm fresh cuisine with natural, organic garden ingredients. We first sampled the house salad, a refreshing gourmet salad of roasted beets, crispy faro, Cotija cheese, over mixed greens and sweet mustard vinaigrette, a unique blend of crunchiness unlike anything you have had before. Try the dip trio platter made up of smoky eggplant caviar, red pepper hummus and olive tapenade and crackers. Their fried corn on the cob topped with zesty parmesan mix and butter was outstanding, as were the other dishes we tasted, including lobster mac-n-cheese; South Carolina eighthour house smoked pork topped with coleslaw and molasses beer BBQ sauce, served piled high on a branded bun; duck and pickled blueberry sausage, topped with jalapeno, apricot and shallot relish; and Wagyu beef burger served on a branded M.E.A.T bun and a foot-long half-pound Wagyu beef hotdog, with homemade house recipe mustard and ketchup. You have to order the truffled bistro fries with truffle oil, Parmesan and rosemary. Desserts were to die for, including banana bread ale and vanilla bean ice cream shake, a Guinness and Nutella shake that is smooth as silk. In addition, the breakfast menu, served Monday through Friday from 8-10 a.m., has a dozen choices made from the most unusual fresh ingredients. This is the place to try for farm fresh ingredients, great food and beverage combinations, a most unique dining experience!

EXPANDS WITH TWO NEW DEMENTED DIMENSIONS THIS 2014 HAUNT SEASON HAUNTED ATTRACTION TO TAKE VISITORS THROUGH 45 MINUTES OF FRIGHT
E
nigma Haunt, one of South Florida’s most terrifying and detailed haunted attractions, is expanding to its customers experience by adding two new demented dimensions to deliver a haunted experience they won’t forget. The Abyss will push the patron’s senses to the razors edge. Each step will immerse them deeper into the unknown and will let their minds run wild. Their own fears and visions of that unknown will extract a different response from each person giving everyone a totally unique interaction with the haunt. Realms of Terror traverses dimensions playing on peoples most vivid nightmares through technicallyadvanced animation and computer-generated imagery (CGI), horrifying smells and almost 50 skilled actors, all of which culminate to bring those nightmares to life. “We are making significant additions to the haunt to add to everyone’s overall experience. By adding The Abyss and Realms of Terror and additional staging areas we are looking to immerse deep into the fears many people share,” said Billy Groeneveld, owner and chief of operations for the Haunt. “We are after that mind numbing panic that makes people question what is real and to give all those who enter a very entertaining night of sheer horror.” The Haunt, located at 21069 S. Military Trail, will utilize both floors of the old Bally’s Gym, creating an overall attraction that will take visitors through 45 minutes of
fright. In addition to the indoor haunted space, Enigma Haunt will have an outdoor staging area, The Pit, with cue line entertainment that’s sure to twist the imagination of those awaiting entrance into the haunt. Enigma Haunt’s crew of actors and volunteers started working in early June on themes and story lines along with constructing rooms and passageways that are painstakingly detailed. Actor training begins in August and is open to all those who are interested in joining the team. “Days and weeks are spent on designing and building out our vision of what we want the haunt to be,” Billy said. “It is a team effort and we have some of the most creative and dedicated crew that really take the haunted experience to the next level. We’ve been building on it every year but I am ecstatic with what we are creating for this October haunt season.” It is a no-touch attraction, meaning the actors do not touch visitors; however, the fear is intense and in your face and each realm can have some other “form” of contact, enough to get the hairs on the back of their neck raised and give gut wrenching panic in their stomach. The haunted attraction will also sponsor various charity nights throughout October to continue giving back to the community. As in years past, a portion of online ticket sales will be donated to The Wounded Warrior Project. Enigma Haunt caters to all ages, although it may be too intense for children under 12.
