FROM THE PRESIDENT & GENERAL MANAGER DAVID CHRISTEIN, President ROBERT RANKIN, General Manager

I

would like to welcome our new Members and encourage them to get involved in the many activities that Isla has to offer. When anyone sees a Member you haven’t met, please say hello and introduce yourself.

Compared to last year’s near perfect weather up to Hurricane Irma, we have struggled through a cold January followed by a wet spring. Through April, golf revenue and net income are under budget while Member Dues and Food & Beverage, supported by our Outside Events, are favorable. We also received an audit ruling that unspent insurance reimbursement from Irma in 2017 should be treated as deferred income in 2018. While we will still be spending this money to complete final repairs from the hurricane, the deferred spending is added net income as compared to budget for 2018 and will cover the repairs. At this time, we are controlling spending and restricting our capital expenditures until we get a better feel on how the year is turning out. Our Membership remains strong with 757 memberships and with a record 130 Summer Memberships through the end of May. Our past experience is that the strong Summer Membership program provides new members to replace our annual attrition. We had good success with “Specialty Dining Thursday” this spring and plan to resume them this fall and we will be adding a Specialty Dining event this summer on the last Sunday of each month. The Dock renovation project is continuing with the completion of “C” dock and the starting of the rebuild of the Wave Arrestor Wall. The Golf Course Master Plan is in the final stages of completion. After communicating the final plan, we hope to start some improvements to the course this summer. We continue to work on the 10 Year Capital Plan that includes a complete asset review to determine future capital requirements. Member involvement in all club activities continues to be strong, and your Staff supported by your Board work to continue to provide an outstanding Private Country Club experience for our members.

David Christein President

The snowbirds have flown north and summer is here. We had a very busy 2018 season so far with many events that were well received by the members. Have you noticed at some of the events the unique displays? Check out the ice sculpture from Easter and the creative carvings on Mother’s Day by Phil. We are proud to have him on our culinary team. We have more events to look forward to through the end of the year and we hope to see you there! Summer has started with some challenges financially due to weather conditions not advantageous to the country club business. Rest assured, that we have the right Board and staff in place and with some hard work we will end the year at or better than plan. We are very excited to have over 130 Summer Members because at this time last year, we were at 111. Please help us all by giving them a warm Isla welcome. We hope our Summer Members are enjoying their time at the Club and look forward to them joining the Isla family in the 2019 season!

THE MAGIC OF MEMBERSHIP STAR GARCIA, Membership Director We are very excited to celebrate, 130 summer Members, and we still have 4 more months to go! We are tracking, yet again, to have another successful summer. Summer Memberships serve as a way to introduce our Club to younger families and business executives, and to expose our Club to year-round residents in the area. The ultimate goal of all of the marketing actions is to effectively communicate the Club’s “unique selling proposition” to our identified “target markets”, and build trust through our social media avenues. Thank you to our Members who routinely welcome these Summer Members to join in their tennis, golf, and social groups; it helps create a stronger foundation for everyone. Please continue to actively promote our club to your friends and family, whether here in Florida or “back home”. YOU, our Members, are our most effective supporters in the membership enrollment process. Thank you again for your referrals. We want to thank those who have stopped in to see Rebekah and had your picture taken for your NEW MEMBERSHIP CARD! We have over 1000 cards that have been processed. We want you to feel very proud when presenting your card. We are now in the 20th century with all of our new technology upgrades.

The GirlFriends Line Dancing class had their closing dinner to celebrate another successful year. The ladies enjoyed meeting every Monday at the Club and learning line dancing from Isla Member, Donna Cooper. She was a great teacher and taught the ladies many line dances including some of their favorites: Wagon Wheel, Uptown Funk, Cuba Cuba and more!

FROM THE YACHT BASIN RICHIE FOWLER

AHOY!

Dockmaster

Really Alberto? Already? Actually, he was not a huge deal for us here in the Yacht Basin when he blew by just west of us on Sunday, May 27th. Alberto formed in the Western Caribbean and went straight north in the Gulf with (as all tropical storms have) a counterclockwise rotation. Because of the path it took, and the counter rotation, we received winds which our neighboring condominiums (to our south) were kind enough to block for us. We learned from Irma that the strength of a storm is important, but location and the direction it is moving are crucial to know for storm preparations. Irma went nearly right over us, therefore bringing winds from almost every direction – from southeast to all the way around the compass and out of the southwest when she was past us. Where do you sit on the map? What direction do your home windows face, does your boat face, will your next fairway shot face? Knowing where you are and a compass can help you in many ways as far as wind goes.

The Marina re-build is looking good. We are finished with over half of the entire dock structures as docks C, D and E are done. The 600 feet of the main-dock walk out (middle marina from parking lot out to the end) is also complete. Next up are docks F, A and B. The goal date for entire completion may be missed by a few months due mainly to weather and barge equipment repairs. But, who knows? With help from Mother Nature and hard work, we might be able to catch up and have her all done and new by the end of this year. Have a great summer! 12226

CATERING CORNER WITH MELISSA How to Plan a Themed Event Themed events have increased in popularity over the last few years in the event industry. Many clients come with ideas of a theme they want to portray but often times have a hard time figuring out how to tastefully execute the event or reflect the theme without looking too over-done. When planning an event the main things a planner will identify are the demographics of the guests, color scheme, food and beverage requirements, time frame, environment/entertainment and the space/location. Once these are reviewed the theme is then applied to amplify the event details with subtle colors, graphics, words, music and dĂŠcor to really make the basics of the event stand out. We have created many fun and beautiful themed events here at Isla Del Sol from unicorn birthday celebrations, safari baby showers and Hawaiian luau corporate events! All of which have transformed our unique event space into something even more spectacular! We would love to help you create a fun themed party for your family and friends! “A Women’s Club with Isla Flair and a Tropical Twist”

T

he GirlFriends group looks forward to a fabulous year with our 2018 – 2019 Board of Directors gearing up to bring all the flair and fun we have come to expect. Debbie Budreau, our new 1st VP, is already busy helping with Isla’s August Party – we are all going to Margaritaville for a spectacular Jimmy Buffet extravaganza. Don’t miss this summer highlight! We are so fortunate to have Civita Schilling continuing to wow us with spectacular luncheon programs again this year. Darlene Hanson, our Secretary, is busy planning fun-filled interest group activities and we heartily welcome Anne Naylor-Blair as our new Treasurer. Raquel Jones and Carol Kraynak are busy welcoming the many new summer members into our ranks. We wish to send thanks for the support and good wishes sent to our new board. Let’s make it a great experience together! We wish to express much appreciation to the 2017 – 2018 Board for an extraordinary last year: Kathy Blazowski, Civita Schilling, Teresa Sullivan, Darlene Hanson, Carol Kraynak, Raquel Jones, and Diane Howard. Thanks so much to you all! Because the 4th of July falls on the first Wednesday of the month this year, our July luncheon has been rescheduled for Wednesday, July 11th. Please mark GirlFriends Board 2018-2019 pictured left to right: Darlene Hanson, Carol Kraynak, Debbie Budreau, Diane Howard, your calendars. Our June luncheon will Civita Schilling, Raquel Jones, Anne Naylor-Blair be ‘Music Sweet Music’, an uplifting story of inspiring children in hospitals through music therapy. In July we are lucky to have our own Chef Frederic, giving us a cooking demonstration and tips. There are more fun luncheon ideas brewing in our future. Think fashion shows, tea parties, and maybe even a bazaar! We will begin handing out our updated Hot Number inserts at our June luncheon. Many thanks to our editors who worked so diligently: Teresa Sullivan, Stacy Stenholm, and Susan Frazier. We have printed plenty for our membership. Be sure to bring and trade in your old inserts for shredding. GirlFriends will be continuing, as well as starting, some brand new activities over the summer months. Gourmet Gals, Restaurant Review, and our 2nd Thursday of the month Happy Hour at local hot spots, will all continue. Starting June 6th, Civita Schilling will be a hostess Wednesday evenings for a fun get together. No need for a date, because your GirlFriends will be waiting to meet you in our own Club bar around 6:30 pm for a fun-filled evening of cocktails, dinner, and dancing. Welcome to all of our new Summer Members to Isla and to GirlFriends! Let’s enjoy our summer together. We look forward to getting to know you all better. GirlFriends wishes to all much health and happiness over these summer months.

S

ummer is flying by! One successful aerification is under our belt with one more to go. The golf course has been in remarkable condition for most of the summer with the only exception being the short recovery time following aerificaiton.

While a slightly slower time of year for the rest of the club, summer is our busy season in the grounds maintenance department. Our grass and landscape plants like it hot. Throw in some rain and humidity and things around here really grow. We work on a very dedicated schedule to try and prevent things from growing out of control. Aside from the intense schedule required to keep up with general maintenance, we also tend to take on extra projects in the summer months. Currently, we are working on stabilizing the lake bank on number 9. Like previous lake projects, we are using the geotubes filled with sediment from the bottom of the pond. The end result will be a much safer and more attractive alternative to the old failing wall in this location. Our second and final aerfication is scheduled for August 21st through August 24th. While never popular, aerification is necessary to provide healthy turfgrass and quality playing conditions throughout the year. This process allows for increased movement of air, water and nutrients within the soil which helps promote healthier grass. For more up to date information and photos on what is happening in the grounds department you can follow the Isla Del Sol Golf Course Maintenance blog at www.isladelsolgcn.blogspot.com.

We finished the season with two tournaments and the annual Men’s Golf Association Banquet. The final Ryder Cup was a classic matchup pitting Carl “Big Swede” Hanson and Josh Flagg against Bill “The Commissioner” Calhoun and Chris Kellaway. This was the third time Hanson & Calhoun have captioned a Ryder Cup match. Believe it or not, Carl won the first two outings, the second one by a huge margin. So, it was decided to give Bill a chance to redeem himself and sure enough in true Calhoun fashion, he squeaked out a victory. Congratulation to the entire Blue team for a hard fought win.

Finally, after a replaced cancerous hip and a long and arduous rehab, he improved rapidly and is playing well again. Congratulations to Kevin! The elite hole-in-one Club got three new members: Don Fessler, John Lessak, and Guy Oelze. Congratulations guys on your hole-in-one. You defied the odds of 3500 to 1. On a more somber note, this year we lost MGA Members Keith Boyd, Hank Rossi, Bob Rogers, Peter Vinsant and Joe Fay. The entire MGA dedicated this past season to our departed brethren. We’ll miss you guys! Finally, thank you all for a successful year and for supporting our activities. We sincerely hope you have enjoyed the events and continue your support of the MGA. Guy Oelze

NEW NINETTES OFFICERS FOR THE 2018 SEASON President HELENE LOGUE

Our 2017-2018 Season has sadly come to an end. Once again it was one filled with many fun tournaments followed by lunch with our very special and wonderful group of Ninettes. The group keeps growing (81 to date) and our events bring us all together to create lasting memories. This year’s Member Guest Tournament Theme was SERVICE TO AMERICA, which paid tribute to our service men and women and first responders. Eighty golfers participated. Prizes were awarded to 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th places on both the front and back nine. There were many baskets and other prizes raffled off with proceeds going towards the many Ninettes’ functions and donations made throughout the year. Thanks to the tournament Chairperson, Elaine Skiles, along with Alex Dubisz and the many volunteers who contributed to another huge success. Pictures of this event and others can be found in our 2018 Ninette Yearbook. It is fabulous thanks to Sandy Gelmini. She really captured some great shots. President The snowbirds have flown the coup, and the rainy season seems to be upon us but never fear because we are now “linked-up”. This season we started a group email blast to help with information on upcoming events and Member well-being. If you are a tennis, tennis-golf Member and are not on our list just let me know, jpsstpete@gmail.com. Speaking of well-being, Kevin Quay, Tennis Pro (and round robin wizard), is recovering from recent surgery. We are all looking forward to his speedy recovery. John and I joined the Isla family in 2000. Our first interactions were in the old clubhouse with the new one to start in the spring of that year. Our prior experiences with club tennis were basically “get your own game, find some player who likes to schedule stuff or spend a lot of time calling to get a game.” Kevin has changed all that with the Monday to Friday 9 a.m. Exchange. Sign up or call in and you not only have a game, but a competitive one. Some days when I get my assignment, I think “What???”. Then we play and I wonder how he knows more about my ability than I do! He’s not only a wizard but a juggler as well. And then there is the Isla Tennis Camp, one that adds prestige to the club and some cash as well. Isla tennis players are grateful that Isla folks were astute enough to hire Kevin 19 years ago. The 2017-18 season seemed to fly by. Unfortunately our Welcome Back Tennis Exhibition was rained out, but stay tuned because we expect big plans for the fall opener. There was the Davis Cup, Calcutta, Men’s and Women’s Championships, the WTA Winter Tournament, holiday round robins, Snack and Chats and a phenomenal fundraiser for the WTA Isla Del Sol Scholarship. Scholarship Recipients, Adriana Saballos and Gabriel Poskevicius, will be at the Isla Tennis Camp this summer. Thanks to Debbie Budreau and Anne Blair for hosting our new Tennis Socials. Great tennis, great eating and terrific socials!

2018-2019 WTA Officers Judith Schleicher, President Debbie Budreau Vice President Carol Schindler, Secretary Karen Hessel, Treasurer Our formal WTA meetings will begin again October 12. In the meantime, Tennis Talk, the informal tennis discussions will start June 13. We meet at 11:30 am in the Isla Grill Room. Topics include better meetings, our scholarship program, yearbook, donation and any other subjects that arise. After re-reading past Tennis Talk notes, I noted that many of the interesting changes in the last couple of years originated here. Here’s to better Isla tennis and a comfortable summer!

FROM THE TENNIS COURTS KEVIN QUAY Director of Tennis I’m writing this article as I recover from an Aortic Valve Replacement. It was Open Heart and a fairly common surgery. Six to eight weeks of rehab and about 3 weeks away from work. So of course that means no hitting tennis balls. The whole process started with a physical where a heart murmur was discovered and subsequent tests picked up on a congenital valve leak. I can’t say enough how grateful I was to my Primary Care Physician for taking the faint murmur seriously. Likewise, I am so blessed for all the support I got from Members, co-workers and my boss. Well, that is my summer. The rest of the Tennis Center activities continued on as usual. We continue to run our very successful “Exchange” where Members can sign up any weekday morning and be assured a game. Play begins daily at 9:00 am and play usually ends around 10:30 am. Anyone interested can call the Tennis Pro Shop at 727-864-2819. We ended the season with a very successful Grand Mess Round Robin and Luncheon. We awarded Club Champions their trophies and announced the results of voting for the George Klette Award. This is voted on each year by the tennis playing members, and is given for the man and woman the membership feels contributed the most to the success of the tennis program. This year’s winners were a repeat last year with Judith Schleicher and Chuck Blair garnering the honors for the 2017-2018 season. Congratulations to all!
