FROM THE PRESIDENT & GENERAL MANAGER DAVID CHRISTEIN, President ROBERT RANKIN, General Manager Welcome back to our seasonal Members! Summer flew by with near perfect, although HOT weather. The good weather allowed our Golf to recover from an early WET start to the year and after three quarters the Golf Department is now positive in both their revenue and net income budget plan. Great job by our Director of Grounds Kevin Sunderman and his crew who have worked long hours seven days a week to complete needed changes to our Golf Course as we began to implement the Golf Course Master Plan. Please refer to the “From the Rough” update for all the details. Further course improvements are being planned for 2019. Great job also to our Membership Director Star Garcia, Member Relations Director Rebekah Nelson and our Membership/Marketing Committee for another great summer program with 169 Summer Members with many already extending their memberships until the end of the year. The improvements last year to our Pool Bar facility have paid off with increased usage over the summer. The renovation to our dock is now complete with the repair to our wave arrestor wall close to completion. I encourage everyone to take a walk out on the docks and see the improvement that has been made. The tennis courts were again full this summer with another great summer camp and our social calendar was filled with several special dining events over the summer. The age of our Clubhouse has finally begun to catch up with us as we had to replace two failing HVAC units and both of our industrial water heaters that support our kitchen. Work continues on a reserve study that forms the basis of our rolling 10 year capital plan. I want to thank our General Manager Robert Rankin and our staff for their continued outstanding work, and with your Board’s support and strong Member participation, Isla remains the number one private Country Club in our area. I look forward to a rewarding 2018 / 2019 season!

“A Women’s Club with Isla Flair and a Tropical Twist” Girlfriends would like to thank the Club’s social committee, with the helpful assistance of our 1st VP Debbie Budreau, for providing a fabulous August party. The theme of “It’s Five O’clock Somewhere” – especially here at Isla’s Margaritaville - was a fun and popular end of summer event, with 150 reservations. GirlFriends has been blessed with many new Members over the summer – 24 to be exact. These gals have generously volunteered at luncheons, participated in typical GirlFriend events, and have been such a joy to our membership. We are so appreciative for the thoughtful creation of the first ever GirlFriends Facebook site started by our new Members, with the kind help of Rebekah. We can use it to easily meet up to play a round of golf or tennis or go on an afternoon adventure. I hope our new gals look forward to continuing using this platform into the busy upcoming season, so they can take advantage of all the fun we are planning for the GirlFriend membership. The GirlFriends Board has been very active reorganizing over the summer. The board continues to update our Roles and Responsibilities and Year-at-a-Glance documents. We are also very grateful to our recently formed By-Laws Committee Members who are working diligently to assess and bring these crucial documents in sync with our changing organizational needs. We send many thanks to Teresa Sullivan, Patsy MacLean, and Cindy Lawson for taking on this monumental task. Darlene Hanson is planning many interesting and entertaining opportunities again this coming season for the GirlFriends membership. Think of such wonderful events as Wonderland, Sunken Gardens, incredible Mural Art and Craft Beer Tours, plus many more. It’s all in the works and the board will be busy adding as much pleasure to your time as possible. In addition, Raquel Jones’ First Friday get-togethers at the Club, which have been such a success over these summer months, will be continuing. We are currently looking for a co-leader to help sponsor Civita Schilling’s Wednesday evening ‘Ladies Night Out’ group every week at Isla.

Some of our GirlFriends Happy Hour Interest Group had a great time at The Hangar in August. Upcoming luncheons will include such enjoyable themes as a Fashion Show, a Tea Party and Holiday Shopping Bazaar, another fabulous Civita-Created Holiday Music Show, a Fashion Show of Gala-Inspired outfits by our Past Presidents, plus much more! As you can see, it is going to be a great year for GirlFriends. It has been such a pleasure to work with our creative and generous GirlFriends Board Members. Many thanks to Debbie Budreau, Civita Schilling, Darlene Hanson, Anne Naylor-Blair, and our incredible Membership gals, Raquel Jones and Carol Kraynak. Look for lots of GirlFriend fun next fall. We very much anticipate the excitement and joy of reuniting once again with our many “summer away” Members returning to paradise very soon! We in GirlFriends wish that all enjoyed much health and happiness over these past summer months.

FROM THE YACHT BASIN RICHIE FOWLER

AHOY!

Dockmaster

Well, we’re not out of the woods yet as tropical storm season doesn’t end until November 30th, but so far it has been very calm. Each boat owner in the Yacht Basin did a great job turning in a detailed hurricane preparedness plan. The plan explains exactly what they intend to do with their vessel if a named storm is imminent. If a hurricane is approaching we cannot legally force boat owners to untie and leave the marina. We do however, highly recommend that if possible, they haul their boat out of the water and put it on the “hard.” Some have a plan to leave our docks and anchor up in very well protected coves. Others plan to keep their boats here and prepare with extra storm lines, chafing gear, fenders and more. Thanks go out to Commodore Dave Wiggins, Captains Mark Bridges, Mike Logue and Dave Brieske for putting this storm season program together. 11137

FINS & SKINS Congratulations to Isla Member, Ed Bellamy, and his “Team Tribe” for winning this year’s Fins & Skins tournament!

There is a light at the end of the tunnel for our dock reconstruction. F-dock should be finished around the middle of September leaving the final phase left to go (A&B docks.) Isla employees Timmy, Willy and Crispy have been an unbelievable help to the marina re-build project. On work floats under the dock or on top of the dock soaked in sweat, they’ve been hooking water and electrical lines back up. This saves the Club a tremendous amount of money by replacing these utilities “in-house.” They’ve been doing this for the past year mixed in with many other projects all around the club. They have been incredible. Thank you guys! This year sure did fly by. We are already planning for the December 8th lighted boat parade party. Don’t forget to save this date on your calendar because it’s always an awesome time.

SAVE THE DATE : SATURDAY, DECEMBER 8TH AT 5:30PM SANTA’S BOATYARD & TOYS FOR TOTS AT ISLA YACHT BASIN

Congratulations to June’s Fins Fishing Tournament Winners- Team Burristyx! Pictured are Capt. Chris Burri along with his teammates, Capt. Les Weiss, Matt Guenther, Dave Vesper and Damon Pinion.

Join the fun at Isla Yacht Basin for a magical evening. Captain’s Lounge, Gazebo/Beach, Docks and Vessels will be richly illuminated with strung lights and an assortment of fun displays. Stroll the beautifully illuminated docks, meet the Yachters and enjoy their hospitality. View the spectacular Boca Ciega boat parade from beach, pool bar deck or docks. Food & beverage served on beach. No boat boarding. Local firemen will be joining us at our Isla Boat Parade Party on Saturday, December 8th and judging the lighted Isla Marina Boats. In exchange, we will be assisting with their efforts to help needy families in the community by donating to Toys for Tots. Starting Friday, November 23rd, we will have Toys for Tots donation boxes around the Club. Stop by the tennis pro shop, near the fountain in the main lobby, or in front of the executive offices to donate. Suggested donations include but are not limited to: sporting equipment/bags/ balls; board games, radio control cars/trucks, hand-held electronics, and skateboards/helmets. Please bring all donations unwrapped because the firemen will personally wrap the presents and deliver them to the families! Interested in adopting a family for the Holiday? Golf Course Superintendent Summer proved to be busy! With completion of our Golf Course Master Plan in May, we decided it was best to begin implementation on some of the most needed holes this year. In August, renovation of bunkers and green surrounds on six holes as well as a renovation of the #1 tee complex commenced. This was no small task. The green surrounds on holes 4, 5, 6, 13, 14 and 15 were all renovated to best fit the plan. The first tee was expanded to provide an additional forward tee which was desperately needed to provide adequate square footage for the amount of play. Overall, the changes made to the golf course are not intended to make the golf course easier nor more difficult. Rather, the changes made focus on making the golf course more interesting, both aesthetically and strategically. Over a period of approximately four weeks, the Isla Del Sol Grounds Department worked feverishly to complete the work. Through hot summer conditions they proved their dedication to the club and put forward a great finished product. The response by golfers has been overwhelmingly positive. I encourage you to share your gratitude and recognize a job well done by these employees. The grounds department continues to complete other projects as well. In addition to the construction of new tee boxes on #1, a beautification of this area is also underway to include a new fence and landscaping to take our focus away from the shopping center and redirect it towards the beauty of the golf course. We also look to complete the work on the lake bank on #9. This project is similar to what has been done previously on holes 3, 12, 13, 15 and 16. Using pumps, we are moving sediment from the bottom of these ponds into large bags called Geotubes. These bags, which border the perimeter of the ponds will provide longterm stabilization of the lake banks. For more up to date information and photos on what is happening in the grounds department you can follow the Isla Del Sol Golf Course Maintenance blog at www.isladelsolgcn.blogspot.com.

KARL GUSTKE

Well, the long hot summer should be over before too long. I applaud the few diehard MGA Members for braving the heat and playing on Wednesday mornings. The games were lightly attended and we’re working on some new formats that will make it more exciting and competitive. This issue is intended to introduce the MGA Board of Directors: President, TOM DANIELSON: Tom joined the club with Cheryl in 2009, following a thirty-eight year career with Ernst & Young. Tom has been active with the MGA since 2012 and serves on the ISLA golf committee, along with greens and grounds. Tom previously served on the Isla Board as President and Treasurer. Tom got his start in golf at age 15 in 1963, when a retired neighbor and golfer offered to take Tom twice a week to South Park for 9 holes of golf with his retired buddies. With a $25 season pass, Tom learned the game, and is forever grateful to his first golf mentor for helping a young boy get his start on a long career of golf. With two holes in one, one on #2 at Isla, Tom managed to tie Cheryl for hole in one plagues hanging in the condo. Vice President, BOB WALSH:Bob has been an Isla Member for eight years- we won’t mention his handicap. He attended Monmouth University in Long Branch, New Jersey before working for Hess Egan of Chevy Chase Maryland for thiry-four years specializing in Surety Bonds, with the last 10 years as President. They sold the agency to M&T bank from Buffalo, New York. He has been married to Elaine for 50 years and have two children and five grandchildren. They reside at Villagio Tierra Verde and he feels very lucky to be an Isla member. Bob has been a Member of the MGA Board for six years acting as the MGA tournament chairman. He also has been a Member of the Isla Member-Guest Tournament for five years and tournament chairman for the past two years. Secretary, KARL GUSTKE: Karl Gustke, the MGA secretary, is a long time ISLA member (2001). A career US Air Force pilot retired in 1988 and went to work for Air Molokai for six months then TWA for twenty-eight days and finally landed a job at United Airlines in 1989. He retired from United in 2005 and he and Melba have been traveling ever since. Karl played his first round of golf in 1957 in Syracuse, New York and shot 101 with hickory shaft clubs. Sixty-one years later he has a 13 handicap from the green tees. He got a hole-in-one at Myrtle Beach about 20 years ago. His biggest thrill in golf was winning the ISLA white tee (then called A flight) Club championship by beating Bill Calhoun 3 and 2. Karl and Melba have three children and eight grandchildren between them. They are full time residents at ISLA. Treasurer, OWEN DECOURSEY: Owen DeCoursey, is the current Treasurer of the MGA. He has been an Isla Member since 2001. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y. he attended parochial grade and high school (got beat by both nuns and brothers). Owen learned to play on public courses shooting high scores 120-130. He went to work on Wall St. 1965 and worked for various brokerage houses over the next thirty-six years, becoming general partner in several. He was a member of the American and New York Stock Exchanges and his career ended with LaBranch & Co. in 2001. He has been married to his beautiful wife Kate for 49 years, and they have three children and four grandchildren. Owen has had three holes in one (one on our very own #2) and currently holder of green tee championship two straight years and one gold championship. Currently he is carrying a 13 handicap. Social, BOB DOW: Bob has been an Isla Member since 2003 and the MGA Social Chairman for nine years. He spent thirty years in Medical Sales around the USA with many opportunities for dining in fine restaurants- these great years led to being social chairman planning various lunches and social events for the MGA with Chef Frederic- any complaints about the events See Bob! Golf at Isla is great- Bob’s hole in one on #2 was a thrill, but seeing his terminally ill brotherin-law get a hole in one on #11 at the 2011 Member-Guest was a greater thrill. Bob and Betsy have been married for 56 years, have two sons and five grandchildren who can often be found at the golf course, pool bar and Club during March and April.

MGA UPDATE (CONT.) Handicap & Information Support, ROCKY AINSWORTH: Rocky Ainsworth has been a member of Isla since 2014. Rocky retired from the Air Force in 2005 after thirty-four years of active service. He then began a second career as a Department of Defense contractor for Lockheed Martin and Fulcrum CO. After his graduation from Easton High School in Denton, Maryland in 1968, Rocky’s father gave him his first set of clubs, Spaulding Executives, and played his first round of golf with his father at Caroline Country Club. Even after fifty years of playing this wildly and rewarding game, Rocky is still trying to find his true authentic swing. Rocky and his wife Kim are full-time residents and live on the paradise island of Tierra Verde. Rocky often plays the Golf Chanel Amateur Tour but his biggest golf thrill so far, was winning Isla’s 2017 Member Guest Championship. Member at Large, CHUCK SMITH: The rookie member on the MGA board, has been an Isla Member since 2015. His work career, US Government, a G -man for thirty-eight years where he lived and worked in Columbus, Ohio, St Louis, Missouri, Indianapolis, Indiana and Dallas, Texas. His golf career started in Vandalia, Ohio fifty years ago. He had a morning newspaper route delivered by bicycle to pay for golf, his junior golf pass for unlimited golf was $40 a year. Chuck has one hole in one, it happened in a Pro-Am event in Santee, South Carolina, that shot won a skin which paid $500 bucks, however, the bar tab was $425.00 and the rest went to the bartender. Chuck and Sherry have been married for forty years, they have one daughter and two grandchildren. They are full time residents on Tierra Verde. Chuck carries a 6 handicap from the white tee boxes. If you see any of the MGA Board Members around the Club, we encourage you to introduce yourself if you do not already know them. We are looking forward to another successful MGA season. See you out on the course! We will leave you with this final thought. Overheard at the practice tee: “The only reason Fred tells you to keep your head down is so you can’t see him laughing.”

NEW NINETTES OFFICERS FOR THE 2018 SEASON

NINETTE NEWS VICI BROWN

President HELENE LOGUE 1st Vice VICI BROWN

It is hard to believe that the Summer is over and Fall has arrived. Now all we need is some cooler weather. I am sure it will arrive soon along with all of our Ninettes.

2nd Vice MARTHA ROTHMAN

I am happy to have heard from several of our traveling members. Faith Palozej recently visited her first “beautiful baby great granddaughter in Newburyport, MA. Faith proudly reports that she is perfect. Irene Heckert has had quite a busy summer. She spent 3 weeks in Africa, 2 weeks in Kansas City and Colorado and 1 week in North Carolina. She also was home for the arrival of her new grandbaby, Clark. Nancy Ceccarelli is very happy to report that they have sold their Plymouth home. Hurray! Nancy Healy and John are cruising from Dover, England to St. Petersburg, Russia in September along with 20 Cape Cod friends. En route they are stopping at a number of countries on the Baltic Sea. Tona Converse has had a hot summer in Ohio. Spring skipped Ohio all together this year. They have been traveling quite a bit and have spent some quality time with kids and grandkids. Helene Logue has been playing golf with a group of Ninettes on Saturdays throughout the summer. I give them a lot of credit for braving this hot and humid Florida weather. Pat Gousha is at home in Louisville, KY. She reports it is hot there too. Terri Vellinga and John toured England this summer.

WTA OFFICERS President JUDITH SCHLEICHER Vice President DEBBIE BUDREAU Secretary CAROL SCHINDLER Treasurer KAREN HESSEL

TENNIS SCHEDULE: WTA Round Robin/Luncheon Friday, October 12th 9:00am Welcome Back Dinner & Exhibition Saturday, October 27th 4:00pm Halloween Tourney Wednesday, October 31st 9:00am WTA Round Robin & Luncheon November 9th 9:00am Play Davis Cup and Pasta Dinner Dinner Thursday, November 15th 6:30pm Dinner Friday, November 16th & Saturday, November 17th at 9:00 am Play Holiday Mixer & Snack and Chat Friday, December 7th 9:00am 1414

WOMEN’S TENNIS ASSOCIATION JUDITH SCHLEICHER President The hazy, lazy days of summer are rapidly moving into fall. But before we leave the heat perhaps we should think about some of the issues that are affecting this little piece of paradise we call Isla Del Sol. Our family traveled to Palm Island, a barrier island near Venice. We were celebrating Independence Day along with some birthdays. As I walked the beach I realized my eyes were tearing and I began coughing. I did detect an odor, and tried to ignore it. It wasn’t long before we experienced the awfulness of a Red Tide fish kill. As most of you probably know by now the beaches south of Pinellas County have been devasted by this Red Tide. Why do I write about this? Like most of you, this is not my “hometown”, but I have come to appreciate its specialness and want to do all I can to protect it. Trash is another threat to our gulf, sea life and beaches. In August a group of us showed up at Fort DeSoto, joining with 220 early risers to clean up one of the beaches. Actually, the beach appeared pretty clean, but in 1 ½ hours the 4ocean group organized event, had collected 200 pounds of garbage, including reels of wire, tires, and the usual Styrofoam cups, plastic bottles, glass, plastic ties, etc. I’m happy to report that our club is taking all of this seriously, beginning with phasing out plastic straws. The WTA was happy to help-out too. At the suggestion of Carol Schindler, the WTA sent a letter to the board regarding Styrofoam replacement. Member Susan Gibbs was able to provide Robert Rankin, Club General Manager, with an alternative. These are small steps but we all have a stake in protecting our little bit of heaven. Speaking of heaven, it describes the weather, tennis and food for our July Tennis Social. Debbie Budreau, Anne Blair and Mimi Burri, “served up” a splendid evening for the 30 folks who attended. For those of you who are anxious to return there will be another Tennis Social, Sunday September 30 at 6:00. October 27 is our Welcome Back Exhibition and Grill at 4 p.m. We will have several doubles matches, including our scholarship kids, Gabby and Adrianna, some 9 year old phenoms (Ask some of our members who have played against them!). Kevin Quay says he also has outstanding 13 & 14 year old students too. While Kevin has a couple of tennis surprises he’s working on, the WTA is working on the food and drink which will follow the tennis event. So stay tuned we’re working hard too. Welcome You Back! We Missed You!

FROM THE TENNIS COURTS KEVIN QUAY Director of Tennis The best time of the year is arriving as we welcome back members who were away for the summer. The family gets back together and it will seem like people never left. We did have our busiest summer this year averaging 3-4 courts a day. Still, our daily exchanges quickly go from 3-4 courts to a full house seemingly overnight. The fall of 2018 will be busy as ever. The daily exchanges provide thought free tennis for all levels. Members can just sign up and show up and have a game for that day. Call the tennis pro shop for information and times. We kick off the fall with a big day on Saturday, October 27th. We are doing a Welcome Back Dinner and Exhibition at the Tennis Center. We have tentatively scheduled some of our state ranked juniors playing with some of our best club members. More information will be posted around the club as we get nearer to the event. The following Wednesday, October 31st, the Halloween Round Robin will be played. The most popular event of the season, Davis Cup, is a two day team tournament. The event kicks off with a dinner on Thursday, November 15th and is followed by play on Friday and Saturday mornings. The year ends with our always popular Holiday Mixer, combined with a Snack & Chat, on Saturday, December 7th.

We have a great teaching staff at Isla. Kevin, Doug, Jorge and Ed all have years of experience with all levels. Our newest employee, Steve Talner, played at Florida Southern. He is available to hit with anyone Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday Pictured are 2017 Davis Cup Winners. Who will win this year?! mornings when he’s not filling in for the exchange. Check ahead if you have any interest in a hit with Steve, who’s also known as “the human backboard”. If you have never played or haven’t played for a while, think about taking a couple lessons and joining in the fun. There is a level for everyone and a game available almost every morning. Members of Isla Del Sol should remember we have a great Fitness Center located at the Tennis Center. All members are welcome to use the facility. It is important to note, and we need help from all members using the equipment, that due to the size of the room, guests of members are not allowed. Please respect the other members and monitor your guests. I just completed my 18th year at Isla Del Sol and it’s been a fabulous ride. The exchange program has grown and the yearly schedule has something for everyone. I hope to see more people using the courts and encourage anyone who is a member at the club to feel free to stop by and find out how you can join the action.
