COMMODORE’S LOG Chapter 8 As most of you know, the 50th Year Anniversary of the Regata del Sol al Sol took place on April 26th - May 4th in Isla Mujeres, Mexico. The fleet consisted of 30 plus boats, and it was the first time in the history of the race that all boats have completed 456 miles in less than 46 hours. Congratulations, to our “First to Finish” vessel “Merlin” owned by SPYC member, Chip Merlin. (Please see pages 5-7 for the race results and some wonderful photos.) My wife and I took part in the festivities and enjoyed our week long stay in Isla Mujeres. It is truly a beautiful island with friendly people and fabulous island food. I recommend this fun trip to all our members. Many thanks again to our Race Committee, and in particular George and Beth Pennington, for a job well done. It doesn’t seem possible, but the 4th of July is just around the corner. Our Downtown Clubhouse will be serving a fabulous dinner buffet starting at 6:00 pm which includes a DJ, dancing, photo booth, and face painting (the kids will love it!). At sunset, witness the traditional Flag Ceremony, followed by the Nauti Cats patriotic songs in the Compass Room; then enjoy the fireworks from the pool deck, Waterfront, and Harborview rooms. I look forward to seeing all of you for this great family get together. If you are at the beach during July 4th, our Beach Club features a wonderful Beach Club Buffet. Additionally, mark your calendars for the Dueling Piano Show on July 21st this event will no doubt be sold out! For a reservation contact the Catering office.

Later this month, the FCYC General Meeting is taking place at the Carlouel Yacht Club, a perfect opportunity to interact with other Yacht Club members from around the state. If you would like to attend an upcoming FCYC meeting, please RSVP to our Member Services Coordinator at 727-892-6893. Recently, we started hosting monthly Culinary Cuisine and Beverage Mixology Demonstrations. These events have become quite popular with our members, and are fun to attend. What a great way to learn new recipes and different cooking techniques that produce mouthwatering results! In conclusion, please be reminded that our Annual Shutdown will begin at the end of this month; Downtown Clubhouse closed July 23rd - 30th and Pass-a-Grille Clubhouse is closed from July 31st August 15th. See you around the Club,

Joseph W. Klingel, Commodore

The Mission of St. Petersburg Yacht Club is to encourage and support yachting, and provide a comfortable social environment for our members and guests, while preserving and enhancing the Club’s traditions and prestige.

Update on Membership...

BE

In December of 2017, the Membership Committee voted to reach out to former members who left the SPYC, in good standing, and entice them to rejoin their Club family, again. With three e-blasts and one post card mailing, letting them know of the reduced Initiation Fee and pro-rated dues structure, over 80 former members applied for reinstatement prior to the program deadline on May 31, 2018!  We are pleased to welcome these reinstated members and to have them experience our Club, and the positive changes made over the past few years.  SPYC BY-LAWS UPDATE: April of 2018, the SPYC Board of Directors voted unanimously to accept Domestic Partners into the Club.  After many years of only accepting married couples and single individuals for membership, the SPYC has made a positive move into a new day. With over 59% of the population of St. Petersburg “unmarried”, we now have a new pool of qualified prospective members. This also means if you have a domestic partner/significant other, he/she can now “join” your membership by going through the standard membership process (requires an application, credit check, and final vote by the Executive Committee and Board). Afterwards, he/she will be issued their own membership card and parking sticker.  If you would like to know more about this designation, for yourself or for a prospective member, please contact Susan Robertson - Director of Membership at 727-892-6888 or email membership@spyc.org.

The “L” Regata del Sol al Sol 50th Anniversary

E W AT

3

2

The 50th Anniversary was off to a great start with 30 entries and over 250 people attending the wonderful Buffet at the Bon Voyage Party on April 27, 2018. The registration and seminars that were held earlier in the day, ran very smoothly due to the wonderful preparations that were made by the Regatta Committee.

There are eight Special Awards and 2-3 Amigos Regata Awards given out each year. These are:

The 30 entered vessels were at the starting line, Cut C range markers, on April 28th. Good winds at the start carried them out into the Gulf, where there was a brief lapse in the wind. It came back up again in the late afternoon and everyone was well on their way by dark. Only one vessel, Anthie, skippered by George Alexiou, did not make it to the finish; having to return to home port due to engine problems. However, he, his crew and guests flew to Isla Mujeres. All others sailed on to the Island, with 3 not finishing the race under sail.

3.Overall Spinnaker Class Winner-Merlin-Chip Merlin

This race had the best weather! The kind that has not been seen for many years and the record for the first boat to finish, called elapsed time, was broken, which also set a new record for the Spinnaker Class. The first record of note was in 2005 with the Vessel Patriot skippered by Mike Rush with a time of 1 day, 22 hours, 17 minutes, and 10 seconds. The vessel Merlin, with Chip Merlin at the helm, has captured the new record for 2018: 1 day, 21 hours, 24 minutes, and 00 seconds.

Regata Amigos:

All of the island events, Skipper Navigators Reception by the Lima Family and Isla Mujeres Mayor’s Reception, were well attended with at least one representative from each vessel, most having more. Poker Run and Rum Party was hosted by Las Hamacas (the Hammocks) at a new bar at the north end of the island. A wonderful time was had by all with a band playing and poker cards being turned in. Commodore Klingel and Past Commodores-Bryant, Birkenstock, Schoenberg, Winning, and their wives attended and Deuel with his daughters-Tracy and Leslie. General Manager-Marc Reydams and wife, Brigitte, also attended. Other groups who attended were the families and friends of the Skippers and Crew, and a contingency of race followers consisting of Club members and others who wanted to celebrate the 50th Anniversary with us. A valiant effort was made by our team, the “Gringos”, in the traditional basketball game and the “locals” came out on top (or so we thought!?) with the final score of 4426. We found out later that this year’s team was actually composed of players from the National Basketball Championship Winners of Mexico. That being said, a score of 44-26 was a pretty decent one for our“Gringos”. Our team was coached by Hank Brautigam and a couple crew members from the vessel Defy the Odds and Impossible Dream. Our Cheerleaders, headed by Sue Brautigam, did a wonderful job, even doing a routine that she taught them in five minutes. This group was made up of wives and friends of the vessels.

Pusser’s Rum Cup Ted Irwin Memorial 2018 by Beth Pennington April 6 – 7, 2018 ~ SPYC hosted this event which had 35 entrants on the starting line in Spinnaker, Cruising, and Sonar Classes; two Divisions in Spinnaker and Cruising Class. Good winds gave the sailors wonderful sailing conditions and all vessels finished early enough so that no one was on the water when a squall line came through. Grant Dumas on Warrior and Eric Lopez on Wasabi took first and second in the Spin A class, and Warrior also won the Ted Irwin Memorial Trophy. Hall Palmer skippering One-Up finished in third place in Spinnaker B. Mi Sueño took the first-place honors in Cruising A with Holanda Manzano and Ron Kinney, and After You placed second in Cruising B under the direction of John Gardner. Thank you to the Race Committee for an excellent day on the water: Barbara Shaffer, Selga Sakss, Judy & Fred Higham, and George & Beth Pennington officiating from Baby Doll Too VI. Suncoast Raceweek

E W AT

April 12 – 15, 2018 ~ Suncoast Raceweek is typically a 3-day distance event, travelling from Yacht Club to Yacht Club with different race venues each year. The Clubs involved are the Bradenton YC, Davis Island YC, and SPYC. Many years ago, it involved many more clubs and 5 days of racing. This year the weather for the weekend was very unpredictable and because the race organizers did not want anyone put in harm’s way, the race was shortened to 2 days. The first race began at the Davis Island YC with excellent winds which allowed the race committee to send the Spinnaker and Racer Cruiser Classes on a 21.3-mile course, and the Cruisers on Eric Lopez,Wasabi, SPYC; Unknown, Lisa Arata, J-Hawk, SPYC; Charles a 15.5-mile course. Due to the length, all vessels finished in close proximity to each Mixxon, Red Sky, SSS; Mark Requa, Prime Plus, SPSA; Susan, Intrepid, DIYC. other. Day 2 found similar winds, however slightly shorter courses were provided to allow the sailors to get their boats to safe harbor due to the reports of threatening weather. The 3rd race having been cancelled on Sunday previously, was fortuitous since there were many thunderstorms, waterspouts and small tornadoes around the area. The first five places in Spinnaker A Class were won by SPYC members, Wasabi-Lopez/Rosen, Warrior-Dumas, Tack Tick-Siedlecki, Silver Surfer-Ford, and Pigs with no Purpose-Lon Ethington. Spinnaker B found J-HawkArata, Sr. in first place, Ariel-Abrams in fourth place and Abeona-Toth in fifth. Then in the Race/Cruiser Class Lunaly-Arata, Jr. came in sixth, with After You-Gardner coming in 1st in the Cruising class. David Arata, Sr. on J-Hawk tied with George Cussins on Fire & Ice for the Spinnaker Class Bonanni Winner- The tie breaker went to Fire & Ice-DIYC. Thank you to the Race Committee with Gloria Davis, Selga Sakss, Fred Higham and George & Beth Pennington. A special thank you to Henry Moore and his crew from Davis Island who supplied the start boat for the first day of the event and Henry for his assistance with the courses and the developing of the Notice of Race and Sailing Instructions. For results go to spyc.org and click on Sailing then Regattas.

SPYC Race Committee Shines by Todd Fedyszyn Here at SPYC we are very lucky to have one of the most active and highly qualified Race Committees in the country. Running everything from short one design races to long distance races across the Gulf of Mexico, our RC is busy at work almost every week doing our best to ensure our members and guests have the most high quality racing possible. In the last 12 months alone, our RC has spent over 120 days on the water running a variety of events. Last fall over a 5-week span, SPYC hosted 5 major National Championships in a row for groups such as US Sailing, the Interscholastic Sailing Association, and the Intercollegiate Sailing Association. After a short break over the holidays SPYC hosted its annual Master Driver Team Race, Valentines Day Youth Regatta, the Sailing World NOOD Regatta, the Thistle and Lightning Midwinters as well as the annual races to Cuba and Mexico. On top of the above mentioned events, SPYC hosts many more annual events on a smaller scale including team racing regattas, PHRF regattas, Disabled Regattas and the famous Friday Night Twilight Series. Our two biggest events of the year, the Valentines Day and the NOOD Regattas require staffing up to 4 courses worth of RC personnel! That’s a staggering 80 plus RC members on the water per event. Add on top of that another 20-30 shore side team members, and we are looking at well over 100 RC members per event!! RC members are not only giving up a couple hours to be on the water helping out, they are frequently giving up entire weekends, and sometimes even a full week of their time to ensure that SPYC continues to lead the way with the best Race Management in the country. The willingness of our RC to fill roles such as mark boat operator, timer, flags, recorder, judge and PRO are what allows the SPYC RC team to shine. With no one role more important than the other, it is the hours of dedication that each member has put in over the years that allow SPYC to continually be the best. If you are interested in joining the SPYC RC Team, please look for more information regarding this around the first of September from our Regatta General, George Pennington and/or SPYC Race Director, Todd Fedyszyn. 8

Thanks to Ed & Isabel Hanna, our Port Directors for this monthly cruise. In May (5/3-5/19), the Fleet returned from our annual two-week Commodore’s Cruise where we were Feelin’ Nauti! We did some of the usual (rides on bikes, dinghys and trolleys), and of course some shopping, competitive games with coveted prizes, some great dinners, movie night, more occasions to don some hats, play in the sand, AND enjoy some libations! The weather was fabulous and so is our group! We made more friends, and gained only a few more pounds. Flying Club Our April and May meetings were well attended and we welcomed new members at a more informal dinner meeting. We did not miss out on cross table aeronautical chatter or storytelling. For younger, newer pilots, the tales of the “old and bold” were interesting - if not hair-raising.....often accompanied by a chorus of “well, you wouldn’t get away with that now”, for which we are glad! One of the great things about living in Florida is the weather, and in reality this refers to no snow like the North, we all know (and avoid). Some of our pilots are snow birds know flying in cold inclement weather brings challenges: dense clouds, low temperatures, ice and storms that limit the fun days. However, on a recent trip North I had a chance to fly (note - fly, not pilot) along the Hudson Valley and over the Catskill’s. The day was cold, but clear blue as far as you could see. It had its own beauty as we flew low over dense woodland, still bereft of foliage, and it was amazing what you could see exposed below, such as mansions and monuments I never knew existed.

Flying Club Dinner Meeting Russ Savila, Andy Evans, Juan Leon, Ron & Rita Bernot, Sandy & Pete Privitera, Tracy & Eunice Livingston

Counter to this is the fact that now summer is upon us, our aircraft can get very uncomfortable baking in the Florida sun; none more so than left sitting on the ramp in Marathon or Fort Myers. Here the debate runs between high wing versus low wing but, in the end, hot is hot and hopefully the aircon works and ATC finally gives you permission to depart - the heat making a five minute hold seem like hours.  There was another great air show at McDill in May, with fabulous close ups with F18’s, F22’s and A10’s plus an assortment of military hard ware. This annual free show connects public, pilots, and the military as well as some great flying demonstrations we got to witness - the always spectacular Blue Angels, demonstrating the very pinnacle of Naval Aviation.

Flying up the Hudson

Our next meeting will be at the Downtown Club, provisionally the 2nd Sunday of the month. However, I will email everyone with updates near the date. Wheels Up!

Now that the summer is here, some of our members have headed north while the rest of us continue to enjoy beautiful Florida and our active Interest Groups happenings.

Shirley and the Book Group

Golf Group

During the summer, we continue having fun with our Travel Group Dine-Arounds on the 2nd Wednesday, and meeting up for Trivia at the Club on the 3rd Wednesday, until our programs resume in September. Bridge and Mah-Jongg continue weekly on Tuesdays and Thursdays, respectfully, and our Book Group meets each month as usual. We even get together for some Bingo every month at the Pass-a-Grille location. Meanwhile, we’re also busy planning some great programs for the coming year and our new Directory is going to print with all your beautiful pictures so it will be ready for you when our program meetings resume in September. Want to enjoy a delightful evening with your fellow woman’s club members? Plan to join us at one of our ever popular summer Dine Arounds (to attend, contact Pat Seifried seafreed@aol. com at least 2 business days prior to any of the following):

The Wing Shooters Society is an active group of men who enjoy the shooting sports, shotguns in particular. We meet the second Thursday of the month at 6:00 pm, followed by dinner at the Downtown Clubhouse. We shoot every Friday at different locations around Tampa Bay. The following picture represents the best part of our shooting outings. Here we are at the Lucky Pelican in Sarasota having lunch and critiquing each other’s shooting. Several of our group members preferred specialty pizzas and went to Azaros in Venice. We usually turn out 14 to 18 shooters a week.

When we approach a target stand, we have to read the instructions posted as to what to expect at that station. Here’s Steve Nicklehouse investigating what to expect. You can see the trap device that throws one of the birds in front of Steve.

Ladies

They were off to the races at the last program meeting of the year! Against the early odds, JoAnn Wood’s horse, a late favorite, won first place. No one was happier than JoAnn – no one else bet on the horse so she was truly the big winner!!

JoAnn Wood with the winning horse

Ladies were in their finest – Mary Howe won funniest Hat, Nancy Johnson’s hat was deemed the most Creative (but then, her hat’s always are), and Susie Fuller, our newest member, Won Prettiest Hat.

Here is Steve about to break a bird straight out (you can see the bird above the tree line). The instructions on the board to his right says ‘4 true pair’. A true pair is when two birds are simultaneously launched into the air and makes it more challenging. The 4 means you take the two shots four times at this station. In the end you end up shooting 100 rounds. The racers in all their finery

The group is open to all men who have had interest in shooting sports in the past, or would like to try it some Friday. You do not need any equipment, as the venues rent everything you need. If you would like participate, contact our Grand Puba, Gene Collins at genebcollins@hotmail.com.

The fair-weather gods continue to bestow their blessings on the Golf Group—it was an absolutely stunning and mild day at Isla Del Sol Yacht and Country Club when we played there on May 10th.  Nineteen of us formed up into five foursomes to display our awesome golf skills.  While we might have missed that mark by a bit (John informed us that we suck when no one hit the green on hole #15!), we certainly posted some good scores.  Most importantly, we all had a great time.  In first place with -4 were Nydia Ballesteros, Bill Casey, Steve Deininger, and Tom Ritschel.  Coming in second at par were Barbara Deininger, Ron Hersch, George Kinemond, and Bill Protz.  Third place honors were snagged by Theresa Matthews, Jack Pykel, and Dick Vazzano with a score of +2.  Dick Vazzano won closest to the line (about 18”).  Susan Arsenault, Barbara Deininger, Mike McDonough, and Dave Evans won closest to the pin on the par 3’s.  Afterwards we were treated to a terrific lunch in their beautiful Club, eloquently decorated for Mother’s Day…so posh!  Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, July 3rd (at the Downtown Clubhouse), and the next golf outing for July we are still working on a date and location. We will also be having an outing at Top Golf in Tampa in August and guests are welcome. New members and all skill levels can find a home with the SPYC Golf Group!

Amateur Radio Club by Barbara Watson

A huge thank you to Ralph Warmack -W4TNY, Dick MordauntAB1NI, and Steve Partridge -YC Maintenance, for raising the new antenna on the Clubhouse roof. Summer Hurricane procedure: Steve has kindly volunteered to remove the antenna.  To remotely use the club radio, go to the ARC website where a member may make a reservation to remotely use the radio. Should the radio be in use it will not respond. Larry Wissing-N4MKT, was once again very involved with the Mexico Race. He shared his considerable weather knowledge and radio know how with the competitors prior to the race. Joy Wissing-KC4LAP, was also very involved with registration and helping out at Headquarters. Larry and Joy flew to Isla Mujeres where Larry continued to man the radio throughout the final days. The Mexico Race start was covered by several ham operators who patrolled the docks and assisted with last moment issues.  Thanks to Chris-KJ4IFR, Marge-KJ4JSH, Lewis, BobK0UZE, Linda Potter and Barbara Watson-KN4MB, for being there. Frank Mann-KJ4ZHY, was skippering his Mesmeriah on the race and reported that the 50th celebrations in Isla Mujeres were splendid and enjoyed by all. The final ARC meeting was held May 15th in the Park View room and Dick Mordaunt-AB1NI, demonstrated the use of the Clubs amateur radio remotely from his lap top. There will be no more ARC meetings at SPYC until the Fall. However, the Monday night 5:30 pm Net will continue, so if you cannot get to your radio, then tune into Echolink on your mobile phone or iPad. Left: Frank Mann, Chris and Marge Lewis with Bob Potter

Vintage Motor Club

Rain Rain Go Away……. Unfortunately, we have only been able to sneak in a couple rides between rainstorms during the past several weeks. Our destinations were Sleepy Hollow Restaurant in Floral City, and El Maguey Restaurant in St. Petersburg. Both were great rides with wonderful food. Our Memorial Day Ride to the Florida National Cemetery to honor our Veterans was cancelled due to rain predictions. Vintage Motor Cub members George and Carol Orndorff have quite a collection of vintage cars. Many of them were purchased from California including Mercedes, Bentley, Porsches, and even a Nash Metropolitan. While at the Club one evening, George and Carol were telling me about their most recent adventure…. George said, “March 2018 found me looking for the most recent acquisition to be added to our collection. I know several reputable dealers in California and from time to time I scan their inventories. While “just looking”, I found a 1997 Porsche 933 Cabriolet. The LAST of the air-cooled 911’s. Now we began the preparation to drive the 20-year-old Cabriolet across country, never having seen or having driven it before. With assistance in California, new convertible top and services provided locally plus pre-shipped critical spare parts from St Pete; belts, tools, jumper cables and a relay… our journey began. A cross-country flight and bus ride to Monterey later we were finally face to face with our Porsche. After only one night’s sleep we started our trip headed East. Not a Cannonball Run in reverse but a chance to experience California with stops along Rt 66 and then an unexpected final dash home to be ahead of Alberto. WE MADE IT BACK! All 3300 miles of it with NO mechanical or other roadside issues. A wonderful car in both style and performance.” On another note, although I’ve enjoyed my time as Chairman, as of this issue I will be turning over the responsibilities of Social Chairman of the VMC. I’ll be doing a lot of traveling for the remainder of this year but, hope to see you at some gatherings and this years Vintage Motor Classic. However, some great news, as George and Carol Orndorff have volunteered as CoChairmen!! Maybe they’ll write more about their fabulous trip down Rt 66. MARK YOUR CALENDARS: Next VMC event - July 29th, Sunday Brunch at the Beach Club. We’re meeting at 12:30 pm – Brunch at 1:00 pm. Bring your vintage car and invite some prospective club members to join! RSVP BY JULY 23rd directly to the Beach Club and ask for the “Car Club table” (727-360-1646). (Please indicate if you are bringing a vintage car and need a parking place.) Remember, you don’t have to own a vintage car to join our club … you just need to enjoy them!

Norm and Bob arriving at Sleepy Hollow Restaurant in Floral City

The Riders Club would like to welcome its’ two newest members: Ted Henter has an extensive riding history beginning in his youth, and evolving into a professional racing career with the Harley Racing Team during the 1970’s. Among many others, Ted has raced at Daytona and Taladega. Our Riders Club has thoroughly enjoyed Ted’s stories of his life in racing and his vast experience with motorcycles. In 1978 after an auto accident in England, which left Ted blind and unable to ride, Ted turned to competitive waterskiing and went on to found Henter-Joyce, which developed the JAWS program (synthetic speech software for the sight impaired) in 1995. Bart Franey was looking forward to a new challenge and found it with our Riders Club. Bart is new to riding and is currently renting different motorcycle models to gain experience and find that special fit. Bart rode a jet black Indian motorcycle as a kid with his Uncle, and never forgot the experience. He hopes to relive that special time by riding an Indian again soon. Bart used to build and race gas powered go carts on dirt tracks as a teenager. In later life He turned to boating, learning to sail and Captain power boats, eventually owning and living on a DeFever 49 for five years. Bart is retired from his career in the medical products industry and looks forward to joining us on a ride soon. Our meetings are held the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 6:15 pm at the Downtown Club. Join our next meetings scheduled for July 17th and August 21st.
