SAILING CAPITAL OF THE SOUTH
COMMODORE’S LOG Chapter 9 Summer seems to have flown by! We have just completed our annual shutdown at both the Downtown and Pass-a-Grille Clubhouses. Our great staff is happy to be welcoming everyone back. Both clubhouses received annual painting, house cleaning, carpeting and much more! Please take a look around the next time you visit and I am sure you will agree that we really have some beautiful, well maintained facilities. We focused again this year on the overall financial condition of the Club brought about by conservative, well thought out business decisions. This planning is carried forward with the interests of our members foremost in our minds. In June, the Board approved the 2019 budget, which included a 2.5% increase in dues. This minimal increase allows us to meet our ongoing and future maintenance and improvements to all of our facilities, programs, and quality of service, as well as the anticipated additional expenditures seen in property taxes, utilities, insurance premiums, and other costs of doing business. This is a difficult decision, however keeping this to a modest amount each year will allow us to continue the enhancements and services of the Club without the potential for a large adjustment in the future. Lastly, this amount allows the Club to increase our funding to the capital reserves insuring our future is secure in maintaining and improving our physical assets. Please be reminded, our Annual Meeting and Board of Directors Election is coming up on Tuesday, October 9th. The official election notice, with a list of the candidates, is posted in this issue and public areas of the Club. Please take a moment to review the candidates and their qualifications. The elected members from the ballot will be making important board decisions for years to come, and we appreciate your participation. Also, thank you, in advance, to all of the candidates for their commitment to run for a Board seat. It seems hard to believe but our regatta schedule is already taking shape. To name a few which are coming up – The St. Petersburg Classic Regatta -September 14-15, Bruce Watters Green Fleet Regatta -September 14-15, Ted Irwin Memorial/Fall Bay Race October 13, and our Annual SPYC Championship scheduled for October 20th. Please note that registration is NOW OPEN for the 2019 St. Petersburg to Habana Race - March 18, 2019 (NOR and online entry at www.spychabanarace.com). SPYC has a full season ahead of some great Club events too. Something for everyone…from the 60’s British Invasion Event, Donald Trump Comedy Impersonator Show & Prix-Fixe Dinner, to the Fall Movies
at the Tiki happening in October. Also, mark your calendars for the 2018 Commodore's Ball on Saturday, November 10th. This is the premiere party of the year - don't miss it! Getting away from business, I thought I’d take a moment and pass on a little about my summer experience. I was fortunate to be invited to participate in the Combat Wounded Veteran Scuba Challenge which runs out of the Key West Naval Air Station. I was joined by P/C Richard Winning and Club Member, Doug Corey. We used two of our boats and joined two other boats to take 25 of our nation's best (and an assortment of wives and children), on a seven day scuba challenge; which involved snorkeling, reef restoration, and deep water wreck dives. It was a truly humbling experience and an absolute pleasure to spend time with these wounded veterans and their families, some of whom traveled across the county to participate in this very worthwhile challenge. Once again, welcome back after shutdown and a busy summer! See you around the Club,
Joseph W. Klingel, Commodore

A message from Membership... Group Memberships Private Clubs rely on membership and referrals from their members. WE rely on YOU to recommend your friends, relatives, co-workers – the best of your inner circle – with whom you would like to network, party, and share your club experiences. SPYC has a new program for individuals who belong to the same association, organization or business, or who have like interests. Our Group Membership allows for a minimum of three (3) individuals to apply at the same time to obtain the group Initiation Fee discount. Each group member will hold their account in their name and each account will be billed individual dues. For example; someone belongs to an organization in downtown and knows two other members of that organization, or three individuals live in the same condo complex. The three of them would complete applications and submit them at the same time - going through the standard SPYC application process. The savings are within the group Initiation Fee discount; which is $4,000 per person, vs. $6,500 per person for an Active member. Don’t forget about our Member Referral Program, where the Proposer is “awarded” with food and beverage certificates for referring new members. Amounts vary depending on the level of the referral, but what a great way to be rewarded for recommending a valuable member to your Club!

What is the SPYC Poker Run? A Poker Run is not a race. It’s a game of chance, Club tradition, and an assembly of some of the most social and active boaters at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club. On Poker Run day, boaters meet at the Club docks and show off their well curated boat themes. (Examples: Gilligan’s Island, Viking Raiding Party, Top Gun). Upon arriving at the Club they will check in and get a nautical map that will chart their path of adventure for the day. The map includes 6-7 different stops in which the boaters will travel to, collecting a poker chip at each stop. The stops are a combination of gracious member’s waterfront homes and local waterside restaurants. All boats are tasked with visiting all the stops in the time

Voted most colorful Riders Club photo this year! Riders Club member Bob Kline submitted this great photo showing his preparation for the 4th of July Parade in Tierra Verde. It’s a shame we couldn’t hear his radio playing patriotic songs.
Our Riders also enjoyed a somewhat muddy ride to Richloam, Florida where some of our favorite back-roads turned into mush. After a few route changes, and a test of our motoring skills, we made it back safely. Our helmets go off to Bart Franey, our newest Riders Club member (and new to riding) for impressing all of the seasoned riders with his skill at handling his bike, during this sometimes precarious ride. Bart has logged more than 500 miles testing out bikes before making that forever purchase. Bart has enjoyed a 2017 Harley Davidson Heritage Softail, a 2017 Harley Street Glide, and a 2017 Electra Glide. He may have eliminated the Softail, feeling it is a bit small for his frame. Bart will be visiting Maine soon and riding another Electra Glide, but is looking forward to returning to Florida and trying out this Indian Chieftain.

The Broad Reachers held their Annual Meeting and Elections of Officers on May 12th. We had a group of 28 Broads attending with Kerrie providing a wonderful setting and lunch. Next year are new Officers and FWSA Delegates are as follows: Captain - Katie Rodgers, Race Captain – Gwen Mann, Treasurer – Carol Hansen, Secretary – Donna Papa. FWSA 1st Delegate – Marti Cochran, 2nd Delegate – Debbie Walcutt, and Alternate – Angela Treinan. This past FWSA Interclub season was very successful, the Broads sailed every club race but one!! Our goal this upcoming year is to race in all of them!! Last year we even had our very first Championship Regatta team sailing in an Ideal 18. This coming year, the Broads have a busy schedule with the Welcome Back Party & Meeting, Nona Bolster Regatta, Commodore Lucas Cup, Halloween Race, and many more fun sails. For anyone that would like to learn to sail a Pram or just have some fun on Saturdays, the Broad Reachers are for you! Please contact Carol Hansen at carol@dband1.com for more information.
While the Club was closed for vacation, Shirley Rigo hosted a wonderful pool party at her home. 50 or more Salty Sisters had a great time swimming, eating, playing cards, etc. The food was delicious, the weather cooperated, and everyone had a great time. August 1st was the 1st Annual Noodle Doodle Golf Tournament and Horse Race held in the Ballroom. The Salties created their “race horses” from noodles. The winner of the Best Decorated Horse went to the team of Gail Falkingham, Barbara Deininger, Rosie Watters, and Carole Bardes. First place winners of the Putt-Putt contest were: Iris Mastry, Jill Bridges, Tove Kullman, and Kathy Ahern.

This is the busy month for hurricane season....hopefully this year is not so busy. Ham radio operators, in cooperation with National Hurricane Center in Miami, provide vital backup communication in affected areas. Cell towers are destroyed, internet is down, satellite phones are overloaded and unreliable. More often than not, Ham radio is the only viable communications available during and for several days after the storm passes. Ham Radio Saves Lives! Our next club meeting will be on Tuesday, September 18th at 6:00 pm in the Park View Room. Eyeball for a Highball before the meeting in the lounge. We welcome any member to join us at our meetings, if you are interested in becoming a licensed Amateur Radio Operator …. we will help you. 10

Welcome Aboard!!! Woohoo! Good Bye Summer, Hello Fall! The Cruising Fleet kept cool this summer out on the water. In June we cruised to Longboat Key Moorings with Port Directors Mike & Beverly Bodin planning a great weekend. We enjoyed docktails under the trees each evening before dining at the Portofino on Friday, and then to the not-so-Dry Dock Waterfront Grill on Saturday. Our best (or only?) memory is the random seating assignment using miniature libations, a new favorite!

In July, we kept it close to home back at our own Club for the 4th of July celebrations planned by Port Directors Pam and Allen Thomas. Not only did we get culturefied through a tour of the new downtown James Museum, we had a great time gathering at their high-rise condo where they hosted our crowd for libations and dinner to enjoy the fireworks. We were having so much fun that we missed the fireworks…oh wait, they were cancelled! That’s how Memories are made!

On July 9th, the Golf Group played Mangrove Bay and had a fun time. There was a total of 17 players and it was a really nice day. Finishing in first place were Barbara Deninger, Jay Marshall, Joe Mansir, and Martin Morris at 4 under par. Second place, at 2 under par, were Herb Anderson, Guy Anderson, George Kinemond, and Theresa Matthews. Third place was secured by John Arsenault, Nydia Ballesteros, and Bill Protz. There were four par 3 holes and we all managed to miss the green on one of them…yikes! For the others, honors for closest to the pin went to Jack Howard, Theresa Matthews, and Martin Morris. Congratulations to all the winners. On August 21st, a new tradition for our club, we are headed to TopGolf for some fun and camaraderie. Guests are welcome, so please let us know if you’d like to join us. We plan to get started at 11:00 am. We are fast approaching a new year at SPYC and wish to warmly invite anyone, interested in joining the Golf Group, to drop by either for a visit at one of our monthly meetings at the club (preceded by happy hour of course!), or a golf outing to see if it’s a fit for you. If interested, please contact Susan and John Arsenault at SueatCP@aol.com.

Part Two: George & Carol Orndorff’s trip east from Monterey, Ca. via their 1997 Porsche 993 Early before anyone in our motel turned on lights, we left Monterey, Ca. in the rain and fog. I locked the car with the key, not the electronic fob, not knowing the battery condition. The key locked the car, but turning it in reverse direction at 0400 local didn’t work so well. I set off the alarm - making me glad we were ready to just “jump in and GO!” Heading down US 101 to Paso Robles on Cal 58, turning east were dozens of oil wells pumping, and just a few feet away from one another. They were like large rusty steel skeletons constantly moving with a silent rhythm. Cal 58 is an open stretch of desert road, long distances to gas stops, and little habitation. Edwards AFB, with its missile and shuttle history, was identified by only a few signs off the highway. Ludlow was our first chance to leave I-40 and experience the true Rt. 66 experience. It’s nice having the modern highway parallel the “Mother Road”. While Rt 66 is old, very rough, and even closed in some sections, it was reassuring knowing after some nostalgic driving we could resume modern speeds on the interstate; while experiencing the ‘desert grandeur’ early automobile enthusiasts knew of in the 1920’s with an unpaved road. It’s easy to hop on and off I-40 and visit many towns made famous by Bobby Troup in the 1946 hit “Get your kicks on Rt. 66”…Oatmen is NOT one of those towns, but we’re glad we didn’t miss it!. The town is a definite step back to the 30’s or 40’s, with a “tail of the Dragon” road exiting toward Kingman, Az. (Photos of the town of Oatman, AZ - truly an OLD WEST experience.) Onward home…as TS Alberto changed other planed stops.

The Wing Shooters society is made up of about 50 men who, at one time in their lives, shot targets or were hunters. Some of us have not been engaged since early days with our fathers, others, never have had any shooting experience. All are welcomed and there are all levels of proficiency, or deficiency, so anyone can try it! Three Past Commodores gathered at this station to see Bob Birkenstock hit what he describes as a technical target. That is, a target moving in more than one direction. It may be moving from left to right but either rising or falling. It takes a lot of practice to project where the clay bird will be when your shot column reaches it. We all learn from people like Bob that have more experience.
We move around a twelve station course in four man golf carts. Sometimes we just get all bunched up at one and get the opportunity to learn and heckle. Here, Gene Collins, our Grand Poo Bah, is entertaining a group of us. Gene's affinity for duck hunting has prepared him well for this endeavor.

Flying Club
By the time you are reading this hopefully the hot, hot summer temps are at least settling down. As usual the summer months seem to curtail flying somewhat, but for some of us we managed to get “up there…amongst the clouds”. It was my privilege to share a flight with one of our club members, Piper Mirage, out over the Michigan countryside and along the Detroit River, quite a plane. In contrast several club members got up close with an Icon A5, a Light Sport Amphibious aircraft that lives at the opposite end of the size scale, but is no less sophisticated. It is amazing how far this category of aircraft have come, and our trial flights allowed us to see what a fine plane this is. Rumor has it one member may become a luck new owner. Back to my Michigan trip, I had a chance to visit the fabulous Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation, too much to show everything here, but the exhibits included several significant aircraft and every conceivable piece of industrial engineering and automotive excellence. If you are ever in the area make sure to get over to Greenfield Village, but allow maybe a day or two. The next meeting will be at the Downtown Club on Sunday September 9th, cocktails 5:00 pm at the Tiki Bar (weather permitting), meeting 6:00 pm, and optional dinner at 7:00 pm new members welcome.
Left: Icon A5 St Pete
Sometimes the best time of day is around noon when we all end up at somebody's favorite restaurant. Because we shoot so often at the Sarasota Sporting Clays, we often end up at the Lucky Pelican off University Dr. in Sarasota. Their fresh fish and cold beer seems to slightly edge out or second choice of BBQ or pizza.
We meet the second Thursday of each month at 6:00 pm, usually followed by dinner. You do not need your own shotgun to participate with us. You may have determined by now that food has become a big part of our official activities! 14

TRUMP FRIDAY, OCTOBER 26TH 6:30 - 9:00 pm EARLY BIRD RATE! $30++/PER GUEST ($40++/per guest reservations made after 10/19) Comedian, actor, and writer Tim Watters is widely credited with popularizing the modern art of political impersonation, an accolade which is reinforced by his unprecedented record of more than 200 appearances on NBC’s The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Recognized as the world’s premier President Bill Clinton impersonator for over 25 years, Tim has traded in his signature southern-charm for a boat-load of Big-Apple-bluster as he takes on the larger-than-life persona of real estate mogul, reality TV star, and President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, and will undoubtabley be the premier Donald Trump impersonator for the next 25 years. Since April 2016, Tim has performed as Donald Trump for hundreds of organizations, companies, and associations from the Dominican Republic to Silicon Valley.

Since launching his career in 1992, Tim has appeared on television shows including NBC’s Hollywood Squares, CBS’ The Nanny, Comedy Central’s Win Ben Stein’s Money, and TruTV’s Friends Of The People. Tim Watters has portrayed President Clinton in countless movies including New Line Cinema’s Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me starring Mike Myers, Paramount Pictures’ Naked Gun 33 1/3 starring Leslie Nielson, and ATO’s Casino Jack starring Kevin Spacey. In the course of Tim Watters’ illustrious career, he has performed for more of the world’s top brands than perhaps any impersonator in history, including AT&T, Columbia/Tri-Star, Dr. Pepper, Ernst & Young, Firestone, Ford, General Electric, General Motors, Gillette, Heinz, Hewlett Packard, Hilton among very many others.
