SOME THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW...

1. INFORMATION: We strive to provide you with useful information to help you with bull selection. In addition to the data in this catalog, current weights and scrotal measurements will be available sale day. 2. CALVING EASE: Our cows and heifers generally calve without problems. We have only assisted 4 heifers in the last 3 years. 3. PREWEANING: We started calving 2 to 3 weeks later last year so our bulls are younger than in previous years. To ease the stress of weaning and to ensure our bulls are ready to breed by sale time and we have introduced some creep prior to weaning. 4. RATIONS: We have reduced the energy in our bull ration this year and eliminated all cereal screenings. The ration consists of 18% protein fortified pellets, some rolled barley and barley silage. 5. COWHERD: Our cows are not pampered! They graze on swaths and native grass through the winter until calving starts at the end of February. It makes sense to buy bulls from a cowherd that works for a living! 6. EPDs: We believe that EPDs are a useful tool to help evaluate certain traits in our cattle, BUT... Quality cattle are more important than the numbers used to describe them. 7. HERD HEALTH: The Windy Willows herd is on a herd health program with the South West Animal Health Centre, Swift Current, SK. All calves are vaccinated with Inforce 3 at birth and with MLV vaccine and Clostridial vaccine in June and again at weaning. All pregnant females are vaccinated annually with MLV for IBR, PI3, BVD and BRSV. 8. DISPOSITION: We continue to get compliments about the disposition of our bulls from everyone who works with them. We are a family operation and disposition is as important to us as it is to you. 9. GUARANTEE: Our goal is to provide you with quality bulls capable of getting your cows pregnant. ollin, Michelle and Hillary continue to put forth a top end program with all the tools you need to select your next bull purchases; Carcass Data, Performance Tested and maternal traits are at the forefront of this operation. They are always looking for new genetics in their family run operation to enhance their product. This year we have new sire groups like Walkrbrae Warrior 116Z, Young Dale Zorian 106Z and HA Outside 5307 while continuing to use KG Focal Point and the MJLC Boomer lineage. In the red section again the U-2 Revenue calves lead the way with the Staunch bull. The bulls are built right for longevity and when in the pens a very uniform set of bulls. There is a large selection of calving ease bulls in this group. New this year to also take a look at is the 14 extra aged Angus bulls that are a very muscular, good footed set of bulls. The 6 females were hand selected this year and are top end heifers from the program. Carcass Data

In order to use body composition EPDâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s or ultrasound data to its full potential, a breeder must have an understanding of the ultrasound terminology. Several of the ultrasound measurements are comparable to the familiar carcass measurements. The data is simply collected on yearling bulls and heifers instead of market ready steers. Take a step back from looking at the numbers and become comfortable with the terminology.

REA & IMF (Marbling)

Rump Fat

RIB FAT/BACK FAT a measurement of fat cover in inches. It is the main trait that effects percent lean meat yield. RIBEYE AREA (REA) an area measurement of the loin or ribeye muscle reported in square inches. RUMP FAT A measurement of fat cover over the rump reported in inches. INTRAMUSCULAR FAT (%IMF) MARBLING a measurement of the amount of fat within the muscle (marbling). USING ULTRASOUND DATA TO SELECT BULLS 1. Fat levels, including marbling, will normally be higher in steers than in similarly fed bulls due to the lack of testosterone. 2. Carcass traits such as ribeye area (REA) and marbling (%IMF) are highly heritable, therefore using sires with high ultrasound scores for these traits will significantly improve carcass quality. 3. Significant premiums are being paid by packers for carcasses that meet high quality grade and yield grade standards. There are extra profits to be made! 4. Less backfat is not always better! Extremely low backfat bulls may sire steers with high yield grades, but they may be slow to finish. Their heifer counterparts may reach puberty later and have more difficulty milking, rebreeding and maintaining a short calving interval. On the other hand, overfat bulls may have reduced fertility. 5. Evaluate your cowherd, decide what kind of progeny you wish to produce and choose bulls with the ultrasound data to match your needs.

WHAT THE NUMBERS MEAN!

BULL WARRANTY

Windy Willows Farms have been performance testing our herd on the Canadian Angus Performance Program (CAP) since its inception. BW – actual weight of calf taken within 24 hrs of birth. AOD – Age of Dam at time of calving Weaning WT (WW) – the calf weight taken at weaning and adjusted to 205 days of age. Yearling WT (YW) – the weight taken at end of test and adjusted to 365 days of age. What is an EPD? – An EPD is a measure of the average difference in a trait of the progeny of one sire from average of the progeny of other sires. BW EPD (in lbs) – a larger EPD indicates a heavier average birth weight for calves by that bull. WW EPD (in lbs) – a larger EPD indicates a heavier average weaning weight for calves sired by that bull. YW EPD (in lbs) – a larger EPD indicates heavier average yearling weight for calves sired by that bull. MILK EPD (in lbs) – a larger EPD indicated heavier calves from a bull’s daughters due to their milk production.

We guarantee to provide you with a sound, fertile bull capable of servicing a reasonable number of cows. In the event that your bull is a non-satisfactory breeder the seller will not, under any circumstances, be responsible for more than the original selling price of any bull or female sold in the sale. The consignors will not provide replacement or credit for physical injury or mismanagement. Therefore we stress the importance of insurance on your bull. An insurance agent will be available on sale day.

nother year has passed and, as usual, each presents new challenges. We experienced the driest summer we can remember and finding enough feed was of upper most importance. We were blessed with a good crop of swath grazing and our adaptable cowherd grazed on that until mid February. The black bulls on offer this year are led off by our first sons of Walkerbrae Warrior 116Z and they are exciting! Also included are sons of Young Dale Zorian 106Z, KG Focal Point 2013 and Boomer among other prominent sires. The red section includes sons of Red U-2 Revenue 200C and Red Kenray Staunch 61D. Once again, the open heifers we are offering allow you to choose from the heart of our breeding program. Zorian came to prominence at the KBJ Dispersal in 2016 where his progeny were highly sought after. The bull was later exported to the US but Rob was able to secure some semen for us and he advised us to use it as we wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be disappointed. He was right! The seller has the right and privilege of six months to prove the bull a breeder. No guarantee is given that semen collected from the bull will freeze. Exception Guarantee: In the case where the animal is subjected to any hormonal or surgical reproductive techniques after the sale, this guarantee shall be null and void. The seller is not responsible for damage caused by foreign bodies after the animal has been sold or for sickness not apparent at sale time. In no event shall the seller be responsible for more than the purchase price. Semen Testing Will be done ahead of the sale, scrotal measurements will be available sale day. Semen testing is important and we recommend testing bulls prior to breeding season. With the extreme cold weather we’ve faced this winter, it’s difficult to get all of the bulls to pass prior to the sale. We will stand behind any “decision deferred” bulls and will ensure that they have successfully passed the standard veterinarian bull semen evaluation before delivery.

On behalf of Lori, Kylie, Brian and myself at Cedarlea Farms, I extend a personal invitation to the “Git ‘R Done” Bull Sale April 2nd. We are very pleased to be part of the sale and thank Collin, Michelle and Hillary for the opportunity to work with Windy Willows Farms. Char-cross calves were at the top of the order buyer’s list this past fall and through the spring sales. Solid markets for tan, buckskin and silver calves will continue as they provide feeding efficacy, exceptional growth and topnotch carcass traits… it’s always been a good time to be in the cattle business and now it’s a great time to use Charolais bulls. The “Charolais” resurgence in the industry has been market driven due to the outstanding results right through from calving to feedlot to carcass yield and grade. We feel this year’s bull pen has a lot to offer! We’re pleased to introduce the Diplomat sire group which will offer a nice balance of calving ability, above average growth all in a deep bodied thick made package. The Diplomat bulls complement our perennial powerhouse bulls sired by Legend, Rome, Gridmaker, Bottoms Up, Kingston and Apache. We’ve worked hard over the years to select genetics that will provide calving ease while increasing weaning and yearling weights. The bulls have performed exceptionally well this year, health wise and weight gain through to sale time. Once again, we are happy to provide ultrasound data which confirms the strength of the genetic package providing a strong natural

tendency to add muscle and increase yield. The Cedarlea bulls and our cowherd have been on a full herd health program and are enrolled in the Boehringer Ingelheim Express Verified Plus program. The program guarantees there are no BVD PI bulls in our sale offering and each bull comes with a six month health warranty. All the Cedarlea bulls are vaccinated to protect their testicles from infection with BVD virus. We stand behind our bulls and want to know how the bulls are working through the breeding season. We are very pleased with the sale offering this year. So often we hear that the bulls being offered for sale are much better than the previous year. We sincerely believe that this year’s bull pen is stronger, more uniform and consistent top to bottom. Come join us and “you be the judge” of the bulls on offer. Welcome to the Git ‘R Done bull sale featuring another excellent offering of Charolais bulls from the Cedarlea Farms operation. Garner and Lori along with BJ and Kylie have again produced as high a quality offering as you will find. In the past many bulls have gone into purebred herds and some great commercial operations including some that are using bulls on commercial heifers. The structural soundness, disposition, performance and above all, calving ease bred into the cowherd for many generations is what you will find. There are many ½ and ¾ brothers with some great consistency for those who need multiple bulls and want to have that consistency in their calf crop. From proven sire lines like the Legends, Romes and Bottoms Up to some exciting new genetics like the Diplomat bull, they have it covered. If you are looking for a homozygous polled bull, many of the bulls in the sale are DNA tested homozygous polled. There will also be Ultrasound data available on the bulls if you want to look under the hide as well. Phenotypically and genotypically this is a great set of bulls. This one stop shopping sale gives you the best of both worlds with some top Red and Black Angus from the quality herd of Windy Willows to make the British influence cowherd that is so desirable in a crossbreeding program. You then have the Charolais bulls to make the silver and gold calves that are and will continue to be the standard of the industry for years to come.
