Lillies of the Valley Female Sale

Page 1

Welcome to the Lilies of the Valley Female Sale. It’s an exciting time in the cattle business and we are glad we are along for the ride! We are proud to present to you a set of sound, functional females that will go on to become great cows and will make a positive impact at their new homes.

I moved to the Valley Blossom Ranch in December of 2000 to run the place. I then purchased it in its entirety on May 1, 2003. Larry Gross once told me “if you’re going to raise Angus cows, raise real Angus cows”. This is something we have strived for as cattle should work for us, not the other way around. We have maintained a strict culling routine and we have done our best to keep our cattle at this level. I was able to get my start in the Angus industry from my father and mentor, Bob Switzer in 1986 when he gave me my first heifer calf. The first bull I ever sold was purchased by Jim Murdoch at Whitewater, MT and the first female I ever sold was purchased by Jim Brown of Double Four Angus. We still have dealings with these respected families today. We are a generational Angus family and Angus cows have paid for everything we have. The Bred heifers were weaned in September, 2022 and backgrounded at Red Coat Cattle Feeders. We are aiming for a 1.5lb gain and we were pleasantly surprised when upon close out, the average daily gain was 2.35lbs! These are real numbers that we are proud of. The heifers grazed mostley crested wheat throughout the summer months and then moved onto cover crop. Cattle were then gathered and moved to the corrals the morning their pictures were taken for the catalogue. I’d like to thank everyone that has helped us get everything ready to have this sale. There are too many to mention. I’d also like to thank the Castlrock Marketing and T Bar C crews. These guys were all here this fall helping gather, haul and sort heifers in preparation. Feel free to give myself or any of the capable sales staff a call any time to discuss the offering as they have all seen the cattle. Since we are tucked away in the hills, our cell service is very questionable so we rely on Starlink to make calls. Please make sure you turn on your wifi calling before hand which is available on iphone only. We look forward to hosting you and having you appraise the sale offering. Please join us for lunch and some VBR hospitality on December 21st.

CASTLEROCK MARKETING

From the desk at T Bar…

Castlerock is as always excited to be working with the Switzer family of Valley Blossom Ranch. Definitely a family affair on the day to day workings of the ranch with everyone playing a key role. VBR is settled in the valley just north of Lac Pelletier which lends itself to some pretty scenic yet variable geographical scenarios but the common theme is the hills. Practical demands from the cows makes it pretty cut and dry on what things need to look like to stay around as a cow at VBR, mother the calf, breed on time and wean a good calf ! Oh ya, if the cow isn’t sound she isn’t going to have a good summer crawling up and down the landscape. What is evident and pretty neat to see the teenage cows working with the rest of the group, there’s no Maricopa for them to enjoy. Kidding aside, there is a lot of pride taken when customers know the older cows and want to know what they had for a calf this year and being able to see them earn their living only affirms the goals set out by Beau and Ashley. The offering is a tremendous cross section of heifer calves, breds and first calvers that had Beau grumbling “you can have the cow but you’re not taking that ____’n heifer calf too”. This sale presents itself with an opportunity to access some cow families which have been held close over the years and certainly treasured. December 21st is a celebration of the years which VBR has put into establishing the cow herd to meet their standards but also prove themselves worthy to be released in volume for your appraisal. With that, the confidence put forward to offer this level of females comes with high regard that your investment in these genetics is taken seriously and presented with great pride. A herd building opportunity to access a breeding piece to move your genetic needle to another level. If you are unable to join us sale day feel welcome to reach out to us at Castlerock and we would be happy to answer questions and assist you in any way possible. See you sale day!

Welcome to the Lilies of the Valley Female Sale, December 21, 2023, at the ranch, Lac Pelletier, Saskatchewan. The Switzer name is a household word in ranches and farms throughout the grasslands of Canada and the Northern United States as this family has been the official Angus Bull supplier. Beau’s acquisition of a heifer calf in 1986 was the start of the Valley Blossom herd. Since, Beau and Ashley have built a strong productive cow herd representing the fourth generation of the Switzer Angus roots. The herd is laden with soundness and quality. Raised on grassland, these hard grass females will suit even the most decerning livestock producer. The herd is founded on successful cow families with several of these females stemming from Elite/Premier Dams. Uniform and broody, you will be impressed by the volume and style of these females. In this accelerating market, on December 21st you have an excellent opportunity to add new foundation seedstock to your program. Just give them a call and discuss the options that will work for you or stop by the ranch any time prior and preview the offering it will be worth the trip. Plan to be with us at Valley Blossom Ranch, be it in person, online or on the phone. Feel free to contact any of the T Bar C Team as we will be pleased to assist you with your selections and purchases in a confidential and professional manner. Merry Christmas

We can’t say enough good things about this cow family as it is one of the beating hearts of the Valley Blossom herd. Her full sister, 18J is the feature cow selling in this sale and they are both sure to be hardy, high performers. Their dam, 707E, has had only daughters and they all have been retained. Brian GOOD

was a great, long time friend to the Switzer family and to us he was “Mr. Angus” or “Brain God”. Brian sourced our Paradigm 13Z bull for us years ago which turned out to be a fundamental part of our breeding program. Brian was one of my mentors. I looked up to him and I am forever in debt to him for his guidance, positive motivation, and more importantly, his friendship.

A cow family we are very fond of, these cows are as gentle as they come, good uddered, good footed, straightforward, easy doing kind of cattle with consistency and longevity. Her mother has had 3 calves and counting, her grandmother is at 8, great grandmother has had 11 and her great great grandmother had 14 naturally. These are the kinds of cows that pay bills.

The Errolines

Too many good things to say about these cows in this pedigree. She has 1/2 brothers working at MFD Cattle as well as Earview Farm. Her mother is one of my most treasured cows displaying a smaller front, great udder, foot and leg structure and lots of heart! This is the same cow family that produced famous Bride daughters for the Longshore and Ballantyne families. The Bride cow family came to me through the 1997 LLB Angus Sale. I was working at Belvin Angus and met Ian Gross there, bought myself a nice little Crackerjack Baros 68M daughter for $900. Ian Gross scratched the cheque and I worked it off that summer at the Wiwa Creek. I was 17.

19L is a calf that is real easy to talk about when the proof is right in front of you. She’s a calf that will also go in any direction you choose. Her dam is simply “the right kind”. These cows have a nice long tail bred into them. A cow or a bull with a short tail has a long summer ahead of them. 19L’s maternal sister is 101K in the offering.

She’s as fancy as you can make them coming from one of the biggest shining stars on the place! Probably one of the more unique females in the offering with her sire sourced from the famous Chad Hollinger. Her dam is possibly my favourite Blaster daughter here. This heifer will do a good job in whatever direction she goes and will be a great cow in the end!

Blaster has been the bull we were SITZ UPWARD 307R waiting for. His sons have been BORDER BUTTE EVE 70C very well accepted both at the BORDER BUTTE EVE 202’04 VBR and Border Butte Angus. 232 calves have been registered BW: 0.5 WW: 71 YW: 126 MILK: 36 CEd: 11.0 to date with more to come. Bull calves have averaged 79lbs. at birth with heifers averaging 74lbs. Blaster cattle have been as good at converting as anything we have owned. Big performance here on the same feed and environment as everything else. Daughters are easy doing, gentle, outstanding mothers while calves get off the ground, get a teat in their mouth and get to work.

We came to own Back in Black HF SYNDICATE 213Z through a good tip from Tanner U-2 PRIDE 261B Walgenbach. He was originally U2 ANEXA 34Z purchased by the good folks at Allion Farms and they agreed to BW: -1.0 WW: 49 YW: 70 MILK: 11 CEd: 11.0 let him go on short notice as they had already used him heavily. We were thankful when they gave him up. He was the high selling black bull from the U2 Bull Sale. His daughters are moderate, great uddered, good footed and display true Angus characteristics. Bulls were very well accepted and we look forward to his daughters being in the herd.

His dam is one of the prettiest Angus cows in the industry.

The best part about selling bulls to your friends is you get to swipe the odd one back when you need one! His mother is a no miss cow that also has the bred heifer 91K in the sale. He has a 1/2 brother working at Oberle’s and two full brothers working at reputable ranches. He’s as honest of a bull we have ever raised.

We purchased this bull from Cowtrax in their 2021 sale and he has not disappointed. His sire, Circle 7 Pioneer was as genuine as they get and one of the best bulls to walk at Cowtrax in my opinion. He continually sires easy fleshing, moderate cattle that are correct in every way.
