The Pentagon of Wellness at Roper Physical Therapy
T
he Pentagon of Wellness is a bio-psycho-social model that Roper Physical Therapy, in Charlotte, has used since 2010 to treat patients by addressing physical, spiritual, intellectual, energetic and psycho-social-emotional areas on their journey for healing. They believe that many healthcare practitioners only see the patient through the physical aspects—the illness, disease or pain they are presenting—and by including the aforementioned areas, determining the root causes of conditions can take place. Roper Physical Therapy evaluates and treats patients while looking at all branches of the Pentagon, knowing that each intricately affects the others and all need to be addressed. If a patient has chronic migraines, they assess both the physical and intellectual causes, educating them regarding migraines and what may or may not cause them, by addressing the psycho-social-emotional lens like the stressors in the patient’s life, including relationships and work. Additionally, the practice makes suggestions to change or introduce new behaviors or ways to heal or possibly offer further specialization. When the patient is able to see the visual picture of the Pentagon, they also become an active player in their healing journey. By using the Pentagon of Wellness, the practice feels they are able to treat the whole patient and make real life changes. Location: 301 E. Tremont Ave., Ste. B. Milky Way Farm Now Sells All A2 Pastured Raw Milk
M
ilky Way Farm now sells all A2, pastured raw milk from Jersey cows. While most Jersey cows inherently provide A2 milk, some of them have tested as A1/A2. Through testing of every cow, Milky Way Farm now assures that all of its milk is 100 percent, all A2 raw milk, which has been associated with easier digestion and absorption than typical A1/A2 milk. Recently, A1 versus A2 milk has been in the news due to possible association of A1/A2 milk (which primarily comes from Holstein dairy cows) with gastrointestinal issues and certain diseases. All milk consists of two proteins: beta casein and whey. When digested, A1/A2 milk produces a peptide called beta-casomorphin-7 (BCM-7). A2 milk (primarily sourced from old-fashioned cow breeds like Jersey and Guernsey) doesn’t produce the BCM-7 mutation. Studies by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have linked BCM-7 with digestive discomfort and bloating, plus slower cognitive function as the peptide acts like an opiate in the bloodstream according to the NIH’s Nutritional Journal. This same study found that a select group of participants, some of whom were lactose-intolerant, reported A2 milk was easier to tolerate than A1/ A2 milk. Other NIH studies have suggested BCM-7 may increase the risk of Type 1 diabetes and heart disease as well as SIDS and autism. While research on A1/A2 and A2 milk is ongoing and diverse, Milky Way Farm has decided to sell only A2 milk. By DNAtesting every cow on its dairy farm, they can assure that its milk is 100 percent all A2. The farm’s A2 raw milk is available at The Peach Stand, 1325-SC 160, Fort Mill, S.C., and Bush-N-Vine Farm, 1650 Filbert Hwy., York, S.C. (raw milk cannot be sold in NC).
