Palma Boat Show

Royal seal of approval for showpiece event

Crown Prince Felipe became the first member of the Spanish royal family in 30 years to attend the Palma International Boat Show, as the event made a resoundingly successful comeback to the Balearics. Around 37,000 visitors attended the 30th anniversary edition of the show, prompting director Chema Sans to note, “This was a completely different show from 2011. Most notably, it has grown a lot. The number of exhibitors was up 25 per cent and the sea-based exhibition area up 76 per cent, largely due to the crucial addition of a Superyacht Brokerage & Charter Show – a venture that makes a good deal of sense for the Balearics… In total 47 superyachts over 24 metres

lined the quayside of Moll Vell marina and, based on this year’s runaway success, I envisage this expanding to 65 or more for 2014.” With the public and private sectors working together, the 2013 show was remodelled into a “nautical week”, with TapaMar gastronomy, the Gaastra PalmaVela regatta and the Maremostra Ocean Film Festival running alongside the more traditional boats, accessories and services. The intention was to promote the Balearic islands, in particular Palma, and confirm their strategic importance in tourism and yachting. www.boatshowpalma.com Arboretum Marbella

Concordia Gala

Great Gatsby glamour for a good cause Marbella Club Hotel’s Villa del Mar will be transformed into a 1920s “Great Gatsby” setting on 20 July for this year’s Concordia Gala. Supported by Tiffany & Co., the 2013 event includes a cocktail reception, dinner, music, dancing and a raffle with “stunning prizes”. Tickets for the gala cost €300 and all profits go to Concordia. Held for the past 17 years, the annual event is the main source of funds for the Concordia charity to run its day centre, helpline and outreach program. This important work is designed to support AIDS sufferers and their families and educate the general public to slow the spread of the disease. The charity is also looking for supporters to become members and donate a regular fee of €80 per year, although one-off donations are also welcome. www.concordiamarbella.com

Now celebrating its second anniversary, Arboretum Marbella is an environmental charity set up with the aim of creating a public park of native plants and trees as a site for conservation and education, and an attractive green space for people to enjoy. In May 2011 the town hall gave the project a 10-hectare stretch of wasteland behind Marbella’s bus station and, after tonnes of rubbish was cleared from the site, rocks removed and the soil turned and prepared for planting, volunteers, supporters, businesses and schools joined forces to plant more than 17,000 trees, plants and shrubs and create an organic vegetable garden. In addition to supporting the project as a volunteer or supporter, or making a monthly donation or giving a tree, people can sign up for an intensive 10-day Permaculture Design Course, an internationally recognised qualification, from 18 to 27 October (only 30 places are available). www.arboretum HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

ASH BOLTON A Marbella environmental charity is celebrating after a record number of locals helped plant more than 2,000 plants, shrubs and trees in the town last Sunday. More than 200 people attended the event which aims to recreate an ancient forest that once covered the town. That’s double the amount of volunteers compared to last year when around 1,000 trees were planted. Organised by Arboretum Marbella, the project is based on a 45,000 square metre plot of deserted land behind the town’s bus station. Alejandro Orioli, 42, Director of Arboretum Marbella, said: “Planting trees can only have positive consequences and that we’ve been able to bring together so many people to be out in nature and cooperating with a project to benefit the whole community is a real delight.” As well as the tree planting chil-

the movement. Organised by local environmental charity Arboretum Marbella and the Town Hall, a number of local schools will also be invited to attend. Alejandro Orioli, who created Marbella Arboretum, said: “It is about creating communities which are resilient to the inevitable changes which climate change and reduced access to fossil fuels will cause and encouraging people to take steps before things get too bad. “Now in Spain more and more people are concerned about this future and so this conference will help to bring people together, share our experiences and work together to create communities better able to deal with the challenges ahead.” The conference is sponsored by the Málaga regional government and will bring together 101 decision makers from local government to try to inspire local politicians to do more to make communities sustainable. Casarabonela

Daytime road closure The A-354 road between Alozaina and Casarabonela is to remain closed during working hours over the next few days as workers make repairs to the road surface. The repairs started earlier this week and are expected to continue until Tuesday 4th September. The closure means a detour of around 20 kilometres through Coín for daytime travellers but between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m the road is open to traffic.

Ronda

Pool re-fit ready in September Works to improve the El Fuerte indoor swimming pool in Ronda are due to be completed shortly following complaints from users about the deterioration of interior finishes. The improvements include decoration to changing areas, the provision of nonslip flooring and the replacement of interior doors. The cost of the renovations at the municipal pool has been 45,000 euros and the pool is expected to re-open to the public after the town’s feria in September.

WATER. A BASIC NECESSITY. SUR

Almogía

Residents protest at water shortages After nearly three weeks with no mains water, residents from the Barranco del Sol area of Almogía took their protest to the doors of the town hall this week, demanding a permanent solution to the lack of supply. Around 200 families are affected by the lack of water, which is partly due to low levels in local reservoirs, while boreholes and wells have also dried up over the summer. A further frustration say the residents, is that the emergency supplies of drinking water being brought in by the council are insufficient. The agency supplying water to the area has been in bankruptcy protection since earlier this year.

THE POWER OF COMMUNITY

Arboretum Marbella have organised a series of monthly film screenings surrounding the global movement Transition Towns, a campaign to create more sustainable communities. The first screening, ‘The Power of Community, How Cuba Survived Peak Oil’, took place last month and detailed the challenges the Cuban people faced when the collapse of the Soviet Union and US sanctions left them with limited fuel, wide-spread power cuts and food shortages. It illustrated that by working together and making simple changes in the way in which they lived and worked, they were able to overcome the crisis while creating a more sustainable community. The crisis mimicked the problem experts predict will affect the price and availability of oil in future decades. The next free screening, entitled ‘The Crude Awakening’, takes place on July 13 at 7pm at FNAC, La Cañada, Marbella and looks at the problems caused by diminishing fossil fuels, outlining how they can be overcome. Aqwa Mist’s Final Unveiling Back at the beginning of last month, Aqwa Mist held its official opening party, and at the end of June, saw the ‘Final Unveiling of Aqwa Mist.’ Located underneath the ever bustling La Sala, Aqwa Mist is the first ‘super club’ to hit Puerto Banús to offer partygoers an exclusive nightclub experience. The opening party was teeming with celebrities and full of utopian entertainment, and the final unveiling was nothing short of that. Aqwa Mist opened its 30ft waterfall to its guests in a grand gesture like no other, as socialites, celebrities and guest were invited to the unveiling of something truly spectacular. Sala Group’s chairman Ian Radford quotes: “We were really excited to have launched just in time for summer, which was always one of our main goals, however we are even more excited to unveil our evolved interior design of Aqwa Mist. This is a fresh new concept and very different to what you would have seen at the opening. We aim to set the bar high for clubbing standards on the coast. This is our first step into what will be an exciting year in terms of entertainment and interior design developments within Aqwa Mist.” The stunning interior will be something that has never been seen before at the opening nor on the coast, with water features outside and now also inside the club. There is state of the art lighting inside the venue with an unrivaled sound-system in place for true club goers. While the clientele who require ultimate privacy there is a Super VIP Room, with private bar and terrace, dedicated waiter and a rock pool Jacuzzi. The 600-person club is open from from 1am – 6am weekdays and extending that to 7am at the weekends. aqwamistbanus.com

Tax hike for incomes over 60,000 euros

BODY FOUND

Junta de Andalucía this week announced its measures to meet its deficit target of 1.5 per cent of regional GDP By Oliver McIntyre HIGHER-INCOME Costa residents are to be hit with a higher income tax after the Junta de Andalucía this week announced its measures to meet its deficit target of 1.5 per cent of regional GDP. The 2.5 billion-euro cuts and tax package will see public employees - including the regional president and ministers - hit with salary cuts averaging five per cent, achieving a savings of 780 million euros in personnel costs. Further, a freeze has been put on all but emergency public works, resulting in a cut of 570 million euros from the Junta's 2012 budget, which in total has dropped from 32 billion euros to 29.5 billion euros. Other savings will be achieved through cuts to the funding given to trade unions, a 50 per cent reduction in the

vehicle fleet for Junta officials, and cuts in protocol costs and other operating expenses. The regional portion of income tax will be increased to a rate of 23.5 per cent for those earning 60,000 to 120,000 euros, and to 25.5 per cent for those with income of more than 120,000 euros. The current rates are 21.5 per cent for incomes between 60,000 and 80,000 euros, 22.5 per cent for those between 80,000 and 120,000 euros, and 24.5 per cent for those over 120,000 euros. The tax increase will take affect beginning in the 2013 tax year and is expected to bring in an additional 25 million euros in 2014. The tax on fuel is to be doubled to 4.8 cents per litre, which will generate 125 million euros. In all, the 2012-2014 adjust-

Driver arrested after dragging bike 500 metres By Dave Jamieson A 36-YEAR-OLD Málaga man has been arrested after driving through a red light, colliding with a motorcycle, then dragging it more than half a kilometre in an attempt to escape. Local police who attended the early morning scene in the city's Avenida de Andalucía found the bike rider lying on the ground, conscious, but with shoulder and neck pain. A witness to the incident tried to prevent the car driver from fleeing the scene until the police arrived. Officers said the suspect appeared to be under the influence of al-

cohol and arrested him. He was later found to have three times the legal limit of alcohol in his blood. His car was also found not to have a current ITV certificate and he was uninsured. In a separate accident at about the same time involving another car and motorcycle, the car driver called the police after the motorcycle skipped a red light and collided with him in the Muelle de Heredia district of the city. He reported that the two people on the bike had fled after the accident and police later discovered that the motorcycle had been reported stolen.

The Guardia Civil has opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of a man whose body was found in a rural zone of Cártama last Friday. The body, in an advanced stage of decomposition, was found by a local resident. Investigators are working to identify the corpse and determine if it may be a man who went missing in March.

PARKING DONATION Drivers using the two new car parks in Las Lagunas one by the Euromarket and the other at the old school behind the Casa de la Cultura will be asked to make a voluntary donation of any amount to lot attendants, who are members of the ADEMijas association for the unemployed. The town hall signed a deal with the group to manage the lots.

Marbella's first 'everything free fair' declared a success By Eva George THE first Gratiferia (an event where everything is free) was celebrated last Sunday 6th May and close to 500 visitors attended. Thanks to donations from the community and the visitors themselves, a wide range of items were available to take away completely free of charge. Items included books, CDs, toys, kitchen ware sports items and even electrical items such as TVs. Director of Arboretum Marbella Alejandro César Orioli explained "This initiative is about educating people about the values of sustainable living and solidarity and generosity between people in the community. The gift of giving is free and by giving these items they don't end up as rubbish, extending their useful life by passing them on to new, grateful owners."

NO TRAINING Fuengirola cannot run any job training courses this year. The town hall says the Andalucía government owes it 985,000 euros for past schemes and that it currently has no funding left. The Andalucía government points the finger at Madrid saying the central government has slashed funding to its employment service by 57% so it has no money either.

TOURISM FAIR The 7th Annual Euroal tourism, art and culture fair launches today, Thursday, May 17, at the Torremolinos Palacio de Congresos. The event has traditionally featured Europe and Latin America but this year also includes other countries, with a total of 28 nations represented. It is open from 10am to 7.30pm on Thursday and Friday, and 11am to 8pm on Saturday, with free admission for the public.

LAST DINNER

As this event was such a resounding success they will be held on the first Sunday of each month in Arboretum from 10am to 2pm.

On Thursday May 24th a Puerto Banus restaurant is to offer clients a chance to savour the same eight-course menu that was served to first class passengers aboard the Titanic on the night that it sank. Chateau Mona Lisa will be recreating the décor of the time and staff will be dressing for the occasion.

The Gratiferia concept The motto of GRATIFERIA is "Because giving is Free". Visitors can bring what they want (or nothing at all) and take what they want. It is all about sharing without thinking about what you will get back. It isn't a barter system, there's no registration or monetary value allocated to any of the products. The town hall insists nothing has been damaged but the Izquierda Unida party stressed the vital importance of these records and pointed to major safety concerns about the building.

What will 2012 bring for your pension fund?

ARBORETUM. ANTONIA WITH CHARITY BOSS ALEJANDRO ORIOLI. A.B.

Marbella's oldest woman helps forest plans take root Marbella's oldest woman helps with ambitious plans to recreate an ancient forest on a 45,000 square metre plot of land ASH BOLTON At the age of 98 most great grandmothers would be content to relax and enjoy their retirement. But Marbella's oldest woman showed age is just a number by planting a tree to help recreate an ancient forest in the town. As part of the Arboretum Marbella project, a sprightly Antonia Aranda Fernández planted an almond tree to mark the International Year of the Forest. Antonia, who has five children,

11 grandchildren and 15 great grandsons, said: “My great-grandchildren don't have a relationship with the earth and that's not good. Having a connection with nature is important, you have to understand it and know what it can give us. To us as children, trees were everything, our playground and our larder. The disrespect that the younger generations show for nature is harmful for everyone and for the future.” Born on February 3rd, 1913, Antonia was the third of 14 children in a farming family and from the age of 12 she worked in the fields. From 14 she carried sacks of flour in return for bread and oil, becoming a cleaner in later life. The charity is currently replanting trees on a 45,000 square metre plot of scrub land behind Marbella's bus station.

How does the eurozone crisis affect your pension? Does the euro have a future? What would be the consequences for you if Spain exited the single currency and reverted to the peseta? How will your retirement fund be affected should Greece default? And if there is a eurozone break-up, how does that leave the UK? 2011 was, undoubtedly, a year of great uncertainty. But there is one area that people can protect – their pension funds. With the challenging global economic situation, if you are already retired, or are on the cusp of retirement, you cannot afford to miss a seminar hosted by the deVere Group, the world’s largest financial advisory company, on Wednesday 25th January at Hotel Don Carlos, Marbella, at 6 p.m. “The markets have been battered and trillions have been wiped off global share prices,” says Andrew Oliver, Senior Managing Partner of deVere Spain. “Around 60 per cent of an average pension fund is invested in shares, so the current situation affects many people’s financial futures. “However, expats are in a unique and fortunate position to be able to protect and maximise their wealth. PEOPLE’S FOREST TAKES ROOT AROUND 100 local residents have planted 1,000 trees on scrubland behind Marbella bus station. The group, that included many children, spent two hours digging holes and planting the olive trees on the 45,000 square metre plot. The group Arboretum Marbella is aiming to create a ‘people’s forest’ with thousands of plants and trees native to the Malaga area. “It was an enjoyable and positive day for the environment,” said leader Alejandro Cesar Orioli. The forest is being planted on the concept of permaculture and will incorporate a total of 131 native species. The next planting event will be on December 10 from 10am. Don’t hook a big ’un! Junta set to prosecute anyone caught trying to reel in invasive catfish that threatens area EXCLUSIVE by Eloise Horsfield AN invasive predatory fish has been introduced into Andalucia, threatening its fragile ecology. The ferocious catfish, native of eastern Europe and western Asia, can grow to up to two metres long and weigh a whopping 100 kilos. The species is threatening local ecosystems after authorites fished an eight kilo specimen out of Iznajar reservoir, in Cordoba. This means it is now threatening all indigenous fish along the entire waterway system of the Guadalquivir basin. “Given its predatory habits, this is a high risk for native fish and other vertebrates

CAUGHT: The 50 cm ‘illegal’ specimen such as amphibians, birds and small mammals,” said Cordoba University professor Carlos FernandezDelgado, who estimates the species was introduced in Andalucia four to five years ago. “The fact there were catfish here was a well-known secret,” said local fisherman Alejandro Ramos. “And they are impossible to wipe out.”

The catfish, with its long moustache and an exceptional survival rate in shallow water due to high levels of oxygen-carrying hemoglobin in its blood, is already abundant in Northern Spain’s River Ebro. It was first introduced by a German biologist in 1974 and later encouraged to breed by fishing enthusiasts – and is currently a huge tourist magnet for UK and German anglers. But the presence of the species in Andalucia is more worrying, partly because if it were to spread across the lower Guadalquivir it could damage commercial fishing reserves, near Sevilla.

Eradication

To prevent a tourism surge, catching catfish has been banned, as has all tackle intended for large fish. “We will not allow catfish to become a tourist attraction and we will prosecute anybody who encourages it,” said a Junta spokesman. Steps are now being taken to establish whether the fish was smuggled into the Iznajar reservoir illegally, as well as considering methods of eradicating the fish.
