This free event will introduce classic car owners and the public to the concept of a regularity rally and bring together these beautiful cars in Plaza Antonio Banderas in preparation for the Classic Grand Prix in November.

Classic car owners and the general public are invited at 16.00 to gather in Calle Jose Saramago, alongside Plaza Antonio Banderas. The concept of a regularity rally will be explained, classic car owners can meet and everyone can admire these stunning cars. Drivers will be presented with a very simple road-book for a 5km route, which will start and finish in the square

and will be timed according to the principles of the regularity rally. This will be a fun and relaxed event, so drivers can measure time with the help of their phones, or stopwatches and there will be a special stage, requiring split second accuracy to demonstrate the different phases of the rally. Visitors can enjoy the cars and the summer market in the square and soak up the atmosphere whilst learning about the concept of these types of rallies, the most famous being the Mille Miglia in Italy.

lassic car races bring out the best in style, automotive ingenuity, sportsmanship and camaraderie, not to mention a sheer love of some of the finest machines and marques ever to grace the roads. More than just a fun event at which to admire gorgeous vehicles, though, races such as the Targa Florio, the Carrera Panamericana, the Monte Carlo Rally and the Mille Miglia helped create the legends of the road and the mythical ambience that surrounds classic car racing, and was the making of such names as Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, Bugatti and Porsche. It was racing of this type, often on open roads, that made reputations and formed the precursor to today’s rallies, Formula One racing and endurance series such as Le Mans. The densities and traffic of today’s world have made racing on the open road impossible, though such is the love for classic motoring and competition imbued in generation after generation that there are a great many international old timer races, rallies and those elegant gatherings known as Concours d’Elegance where owners and enthusiasts come together to enjoy one of the finest examples of craftsmanship in stylish settings such as châteaux and country clubs. The most famous of these is at Pebble Beach in California, where cars exchange hands for up to millions of dollars at the accompanying auction. The Goodwood festival in England celebrates all things classical and automotive with similar verve, as does the revived Mille Miglia Storica, which sees famous racing drivers compete with enthusiasts along the roads of northern Italy. Such events bring a very gentle and fun sense of glamour and festivity to towns whose natural and

PUTTING MARBELLA ON THE CLASSIC CAR MAP That is exactly what we can expect to see this summer, and while Marbella is no stranger to beautiful cars and even classic car rallies, the organisers of the inaugural Marbella Classic Grand Prix 2014 want to establish an event that will really put the town on the classic car events map. It makes perfect sense, as Marbella is not only a luxury destination but also has the beautiful natural scenery and elegant downtown and residential areas that offer a fantastic backdrop for an event of this kind. The Grand Prix is the initiative of classic car enthusiasts Attila Hegyi and Zoltán Pétervári, who have many years experience creating international events of this kind across Europe. Among their now established projects are the Hungarian Oldtimer Supercup, the MiSTER CLASSiC and the Balaton Classic, the latter raced in the vicinity of the beautiful lake of the same name. “We want Marbella to be the newest big event on the international classic car calendar,” says Zoltán, who like Attila is himself an avid classic car enthusiast. “An event like this is not only a pleasure in its own right, but it adds to the lustre of Marbella and can grow to become a seasonal highpoint that attracts visitors both as spectators, competitors and their entourage of technicians, friends and enthusiasts. It’s a great opportunity for having fun, enjoying good-natured competition and celebrating something truly beautiful, and can create events that stand out on an international scale.” Indeed, the Mille Miglia Storica and the Goodwood Festival draw many thousands of followers.

A FESTIVAL OF MOTORING LEGENDS

THE RACE ON JUNE 8TH

Though limited to fifty cars in its inaugural edition, the intention is to expand the entry field to 100. Cars made before 31 December 1980 are eligible, though subject to the scrutiny and final say of the organising committee, which also established the rules in accordance with normal procedure for such events. All competing teams will have to consist of a driver and a co-driver, the latter of which has the important role of measuring the rate of progress. “You see, though the Marbella Classic Grand Prix is an open road tour, this is not a speed race but a precision competition in which you are penalised as much for arriving at a check point too soon as for arriving too late.” Each checkpoint forms the end of a particular étape, or stage, where drivers are scored by how close their stage time is to that set by the organisers. Next comes a technical driving test, which, like the rest of the GP, has the co-pilots using only mechanical timers, before they can set off on the following stage. The official timekeeping and adjudicating will be carried out by the internationally recognised Chronomoto (also the official timekeeping team of the FIA Rallycross European Championship) and the event – held during the first weekend of June – is divided into a registration day and a racing day.

June 7th will see the varied beautiful cars arriving and contestants being registered and checked, followed by an official opening and cocktail party at Casino Marbella in the evening. Though the exact route will be published later, the starting and finishing points will accommodate large crowds, while the route is being designed in such a way as to highlight Marbella’s most striking landscapes and sceneries while also drawing in spectators along the way. The race day, interrupted in splendid style by lunch at Hotel Villa Padierna, will conclude with a grand finale, technical inspections and a grand dinner and prize giving ceremony. Held over the weekend from June 7th to 8th, the Marbella Classic Grand Prix 2014 will coincide with the Marbella Luxury Weekend, a fact designed to heighten the sense of elegance and excitement around an event created out of the sheer love of beautiful cars, classic motoring competition and what a fantastic setting Marbella provides for it. g Classic car owners, who wish to participate in the

Classic Grand Prix

The founders of the Hungarian Oldtimer-Supercup, and organisers of some of the biggest and bestknown car events in Eastern Europe, have announced the date for the inaugural Marbella Classic Grand Prix, in association with the Marbella Town Hall. It will take place on June 8. Following the success of the BALATON CLASSiC and MiSTER CLASSiC, the organisers have decided to spread their wings to the glamorous destination of Marbella and Puerto Banús. They have arranged this exclusive one-day open road race (Classic Regularity Rally), for classic, road-legal cars produced before 31st December 1980. Just 50 cars will be allowed to participate in the first running of the race and entries will be reviewed by the Race Committee to ensure an exceptional selection of classic cars. This event of skill and timing takes place on public roads, adhering to the rules of the Highway Code and requires participants to complete sections in a pre-

determined time, as well as special stages requiring split-second accuracy. These special stages are completed at slow speeds without stopping the car, and penalty points are given for every 0.01 second difference from the allotted completion time. The winner is the team with the fewest penalty points throughout the day, and it will be presented with its awards at a glamorous prize-giving ceremony and gala dinner. The event is officially timed by internationallyrecognised sport judges ChronoMoto, the official timekeeping team of the FIA Rallycross European Championship, and is staged in association with CASINO Marbella and Marbella Town Hall. It will turn Marbella into the latest destination for classic car fans and collectors, and be a draw for both drivers and tourists alike. Race Founders Attila J. HEGYI and Zoltán PÉTERVÁRI commented, “We are delighted to have the support of Jose Luis Hernandez and all the team at the Marbella Town Hall in making the first running of this race a reality, and allowing us to show off this beautiful city and its surroundings to classic car enthusiasts from around Europe.” Participants are asked to register online at http://www. chronomoto.hu/online/mcgp/ and more information can be found on the Facebook page https://www. facebook.com/marbellaclassicgrandprix. Residents and tourists around Marbella and the Costa del Sol are invited to the start and finish of the race, as well as checkpoints and special stages in key destinations, to admire the cars and the drivers’ skill and accuracy. Participants will be able to experience the thrill and challenges of the race, enjoy the beautiful surroundings and take part in the Marbella Luxury Weekend activities. MARBELLA. Classic car fans are in for a treat when the Marbella Classic Grand Prix rolls into town on 8 June. The one-day inaugural event will see up to 50 cars driving around the resort’s most popular sights including Puerto Banús, the Golden Mile and Ricardo Soriano. But rather than racing, each driver will be judged on skill, timing and accuracy to get to pole position on the day.

The competition is being run alongside the Marbella Luxury Weekend in Puerto Banús, which runs from 5-8 June and celebrates all things glitzy. Marbella’s Councillor for Tourism, José Luis Hernández García, said: “We are delighted to support the Marbella Classic Grand Prix as a way to promote our tourist destination to classic car fans and allow the participants to get to know Marbella’s different areas and key sights. “It will be an honour to receive the drivers and a reflection of the cultural diversity and attractions in Marbella.” Only cars made before 31 December 1980 can take part in the event, which is being run by the Town Hall and some of Eastern Europe’s big-

gest car event organisers. Taking place on public roads, drivers must follow the rules of the highway code while completing sections in a predetermined time. Special stages are completed at slow speeds without stopping the car and penalty points are given for every 0.01 second difference from the allotted completion time. The winner is the team with the fewest penalty points throughout the day and will be presented with awards at a glamorous prize-giving ceremony and gala dinner. Organisers are finalising the route of the Grand Prix, which will feature several check-points where car aficionados are invited to admire the vehicles close up.

GIBRALTAR. Camera crews will arrive on the Rock today (9 May) to start filming the third series of the popular TV show ‘Gibraltar: Britain in the Sun’. The news was announced by the show’s programme director, Laura Stevens, on her Twitter account last week. On the tweet she said Channel 5 have given the green light for the new series and that filming will take place over three months. “We can’t wait to be back!” she said. The popular series follows the lives of Gibraltarian and British residents, and has proved a hit with UK audiences in the previous two series. Featuring one-hour-long episodes, the documentary films local characters going about their daily business including policemen, airport staff and wedding planners. Following the screening of the first series, UK-based Superbreak Holidays announced a massive 300 per cent spike in bookings to the

Lord of the Rings Saturn is at its closest this weekend This month is the best time of 2014 to see Saturn and its majestic rings. Tomorrow night (Saturday 10th May) Saturn will be at its closest point to us at about 827 million miles away in what is known as opposition. Opposition is the point when the Earth will be directly between Saturn and the Sun in the Solar System. It will rise at sunset, be due south at midnight and set again just as the Sun is rising. Saturn is the sixth planet out from the Sun and is the most distant planet that can be easily seen with the naked eye; you need a tele-

scope to see Uranus and Neptune. It is the second largest planet in the Solar System; only Jupiter is bigger. And, like Jupiter, Saturn is a gas giant, made mostly mainly of hydrogen gas. Saturn is so far away from the Sun that it takes almost 29 and a half years to make one complete orbit, but it spins very quickly about its axis so a ‘day’ on Saturn lasts for just over 10 hours. Of course when we talk about Saturn it is the ring system associated with the planet that is most obvious, but Saturn is not the only planet to have rings. In fact having

Rock. A similar increase was revealed following the screening of the second series. However, many Gibraltarians on social media sites such as Facebook have criticised the show for focusing too much on British expats, such as Dr Eric Shaw (who looks after Gibraltar’s monkey population), and not the Gibraltarians themselves. A spokesman for the Gibraltar Tourism Board, told SUR in English: “We are delighted that Channel 5 have commissioned a further series. “We are aware that the channel have been pleased with the programme’s viewing figures and, in turn, we have been pleased at the subsequent increase in tourist enquiries.” The third series will have eight rather than six episodes. The programme aims to shed new light on the similarities between the UK and Gibraltar, the latter being just two-and-a-half square miles in size, but home to more than 30,000 residents. The show was first broadcast on 11 June 2013. Series one ended on 16 July 2013 - with audience figures peaking at almost 1.9 million viewers. The second series ran from 7 January to 11 February 2014.

a ring system seems to be the norm rather than the unusual. Jupiter, Uranus and Neptune also have rings although not nearly as spectacular as Saturn’s, and a recent discovery has found that even one of the tiny asteroids also has a very weak ring circling it. The rings are not solid but are made from billions of pieces of rock and water ice ranging in size from dust particles to the largest pieces of about 10 metres. They stretch from about 4,000 miles to almost

80,000 miles above Saturn’s equator but amazingly they are less than 20 metres thick. Like the Earth Saturn has a tilt to it and so as it orbits the Sun it presents a different view of the rings to us. During 2008 the rings were ‘edge on’ as seen from Earth and so for a short while were invisible from Earth but now they have opened once again to almost maximum and displaying in all their glory. No one is completely sure as to how the rings were created but it is

thought that they are probably the remains of one of Saturn’s 150 moons that was torn apart by the planet’s gravity. It was Galileo who first spotted the rings in 1610 but he was unable to make sense of them and at first reported seeing a triple planet. In 1665 a Dutch astronomer named Christiaan Huygens finally announced that it was a ring system surrounding Saturn. Saturn is not as prominent in the night sky as Jupiter, Mars or Venus as it shines just about as brightly as an average star. On Wednesday 14th the Moon will be very close to Saturn, so close in fact that from parts of Australia Saturn will be seen disappearing behind the Moon’s edge.

The green, green, Classic Grand Prix grass of home

I

s the grass greener on the other side? It would appear not with recent reports saying 90,000 British expatriates have moved back to the UK in recent years. Another survey, admittedly of a very low sample group, suggests people moving to Spain and other Mediterranean countries are more miserable abroad then they were at ‘home.’ There is no doubt that many people who move to Spain fail to settle in. Difficulties with the language and culture of what is after all a foreign country, can lead to loneliness, and even depression. For those who have to earn a living difficulties can multiply, with generally lower wages and high rates of unemployment.

But for most of the estimated 1.2 million Britons who have set up home in this country Spain is all it is cracked up to be. Yes there are downsides - stifling bureaucracy being chief amongst them - but most expatriates find the benefits far outweigh the problems. Not just the weather (though that is certainly a huge advantage) but the general lifestyle. Just a little effort in learning a few words of Spanish can take people a long way to making the most of their life in Spain. Expatriates have to realise it is not Bournemouth in the sun (no insult intended to that wonderful city), and an attempt, no matter how small, to integrate into the Spanish way of life can reap huge dividends. Yes, some fail to settle, but for the vast majority the grass is greener in Spain.
