There is no shortage of opportunities to relax, kick back and enjoy life (or embark on an adventure if you’d like!).

Gather the family to admire a collection of car shows across Northern Illinois, a quintessential pastime of American amusement (P. 24). I still have fond memories of perusing a world of shiny chrome and brilliantly hued automobiles whenever the mood struck my dad to take me and my siblings on an afternoon excursion through mechanical history.

We’ve highlighted just a few of the many art shows that will take place this season, and each event will bring with it an opportunity for everyone to find endless creativity they can indulge in (P. 12). While you’re at it, be sure to stroll through the awe-inspiring Morton Arboretum to take in some of Polish American artist Olga Ziemska’s larger-thanlife sculptures (P. 9).

Fun on (and in) the water is my favorite way to enjoy cooling off during the summer months. While you’re mapping out your summer excursions, take some time to explore the Chain O’ Lakes as we’ve mapped out noteworthy ways to eat, stay, play and relax in the watery haven we’re fortunate enough to have so close to home (P. 18).

Wherever your travels take you this summer, we wish them full of fun and fond memories!

Local photographer April Duda captures the heart and soul of motor passion around Northern Illinois. Find out where you can catch one of the classic exhibitions this summer on P. 24.

OUR CONTRIBUTORS WRITERS

¢ JULIE BARICHELLO is a journalist and graphic designer with lifelong roots in North Central Illinois. During her career, she has reported on education and health beats for newspapers, served as a copy desk chief and designed both newspapers and magazines. Outside of the newsroom, she enjoys reading, cooking and exploring state and national parks across the country with her husband, Derek.

¢ KEVIN DRULEY is a St. Louis transplant who lives in the western suburbs with his wife, Shannon. What Chicagoans call “pop,” he calls “soda,” although it’s really rather moot since he gave up such carbonated beverages for Lent in 1999. Kevin enjoys day tripping, reading, moviegoing and playing pickup sports. He recently encountered recreational pickleball and is over the moon.

¢ PATTI MACMILLAN loves words — short and to-the-point, lyrical, even convoluted — she believes they all have their place in our wonderfully lavish lexicon. It’s the power and poignancy of words that drew her first to reading, and then to writing, which she has done as a journalist and public relations professional for more than a decade. When she’s not putting digital pen to page, she (mostly) enjoys time spent with her two young sons and husband though the woodland walks that allow her respite from the hustle and bustle of modern life she prefers sans company.

¢ MELISSA RUBALCABA RISKE loves sharing stories and taking time to spotlight the amazing things people are doing in the community. These stories are an inspiration and a reminder of all the good in our world. As a busy mom to three boys she loves being able to escape into the stories she writes and all of the wonderful people she meets along the way. Melissa and her husband enjoy exploring new places and trying new foods with their three young sons. From delicate sushi rolls to tacos in fresh tortillas there are so many new destinations throughout the state to explore.

¢ DIANE KRIEGER SPIVAK is a lifer as far as writing goes. An award-winning journalist, she’s cranked out literally thousands of articles for newspapers, magazines, universities, and the Web. There’s always something new around the next corner, in her opinion, and sharing that stuff with readers is what makes her giddy. From her first-hand experience taking off at 500 mph with the U.S.A.F. Thunderbirds to her interview with the Archdiocese of Chicago’s exorcist, to learning the finer points of finger painting from a 5-year-old, there’s pretty much no subject she’s not excited about tackling. She also likes anything vintage, off-the-wall, and an expertly crafted ginger beer.

¢ PAT SZPEKOWSKI is president of PR Strategies & Communications, inc. in Elgin, a full service advertising agency/public relations firm she founded in 1987. Pat enjoys storytelling and capturing the essence of people, places, businesses and nonprofits. She enjoys wearing two hats as an awardwinning accredited public relations professional and freelance journalist. Pat strongly believes in community outreach and is involved in active participation, support, membership, volunteerism and leadership.

EARTH of the

9 NEIGHBORHOOD TOURIST SUMMER 2023
By Jamie Baker • Photos by John Weinstein Morton Arboretum Presents Their Newest Large-Scale Sculpture Exhibit Olga Ziemska, artist behind “Of the Earth”

Art and nature are a timeless pairing drawn from basic human instinct and the desire to create. The grounds of the Morton Arboretum in Lisle are a conduit of that artistic expression, founded through the elements of nature. Their latest exhibition, “Of the Earth,” was created by Polish American artist Olga Ziemska, whose large-scale sculptures can now be found throughout the nature conservatory.

Ziemska’s work is about the connectivity between human beings and nature. “As Olga says, ‘everything that is on the earth, is of the earth,’ so obviously that resonates with the Arboretum’s mission to connect people with nature and trees,” says Head of Exhibitions, Amy Scott. “We also liked the fact that she uses reclaimed materials in her work, and we had volunteers come help collect and prune materials for three of the pieces she created.”

Ziemska is based out of Cleveland, Ohio, but her works can be found throughout the world. “Her last name actual means ‘earthly,’ or ‘of the earth,’” says Scott. “She is also the first women we’ve had do a large-scale installation. We are super excited about that.”

In total, there are five sculptures erected within the grounds of the Arboretum. “They range anywhere from five to fourteen feet tall, and the longest piece is 45 feet long,” says Scott. “Four of the pieces are on the east side and one of [them] is on the west side.”

You can find “Stillness in Motion, the Matka Series,” in Arbor Court, “Strata” within the Rose Family Collection, “Hear: With an ear to the ground” by Meadow Lake and “Ona” on the west side overlooking the DuPage River.

“’Stillness in Motion’ is her signature piece,” says Scott. “She has done that piece three other times in Poland, South Korea and Romania. This is her first time doing it in the US and Matka means ‘mother’ in Polish. ‘Hear: with an ear to the ground’ is very accessible and easy to reach. ‘Strata’ is our largest piece.”

Each sculpture is unique and deeply meaningful. Take time to escape into the lively world of the Morton Arboretum and be amazed by the wondrous beauty of Olga Ziemska’s work.

REGIONAL CAR SHOWS SHOWCASE THE BEST OF AUTOMOBILES

Whether they’re held weekly, monthly, or annually, car shows double as (engine) block parties.

“Visitors to our car show can expect lots of great classic cars, music, plenty of outdoor food vendors, restaurants, bars and activities for the kids,” says Laura Thomas of the Heritage Corridor Business Alliance, who organizes the Lemont Legends shows. A similar refrain revs each summer in multiple Neighborhood Tourist communities.

We offer a list on page 26, but some enthusiasts might not need it. Shuttling between shows, after all, can be as rhythmic as the purr of an old six-cylinder.

“Car show attendees like to go to every car show they can, right?” Thomas said. “So ours is on a Wednesday night. Lockport is on a Monday night. Downers [Grove] does theirs on a Friday night. So they can kind of hit each one on the area. And it’s free. The event is totally free. I mean, obviously, that’s a huge crowd-drawer. Come down. If you want, purchase some food, have a drink with friends. Walk around and look at some really great cars.”

Patt Barrett, co-organizer of the Geneva Concours D’Elegance, concurs. The event is set for August in the city’s downtown.

Family & Recreation NEIGHBORHOOD TOURIST SUMMER 2023 24

As with many events around the suburbs, the Concours is free, but donations to the LivingWell Cancer Research Center will be accepted as visitors enter.

It’s been nearly 20 years since Barrett and her husband, John, helped start the event. Through it all, the focus has remained steady yet wide-reaching.

“It’s something for everybody,” Patt Barrett said. “It’s a family event. We’re trying to draw the young and the old. So there’s cars for everyone. There’s cars that are the oldies but goodies, from the ‘20s and ‘30s. There’s racecars and a whole venue of other cars that are special classics” from car clubs.

Concours 2023 marks the first in two years. The 2022 event was canceled when Patt Barrett suffered a stroke about two weeks before the show.

Barrett credits the close-knit Concours community of directors and volunteers for its support in assuring her that measure was the right thing to do.

She says she’s “pretty much” back to full health, adding: “I was lucky. But as I’ve told everybody, I’m not out eating hot dogs and hamburgers and French fries anymore. And no running marathons.”

No problem there. Walking – if not sauntering – is the preferred method of getting around car shows, anyway.

LUXURY NATURE

Camp Aramoni delivers a boutique camping experience

Photos

Family & Recreation NEIGHBORHOOD TOURIST SUMMER 2023 28

The walls breathe at Camp Aramoni.

The boutique campground is home to 11 safari-style tents manufactured in South Africa by Bushtec Safari. Inside the tents – each the size of a small cabin – the canvas walls gently swell and exhale in time with the breeze.

Camp Aramoni is a marriage of luxury and nature where guests can sleep with the sounds, scents and sensations of the outdoors while enjoying the conveniences of an upscale hotel. Guests can open netted windows, lie on an Avocado-brand mattress and watch a chandelier sway overhead.

“When guests stay with us, we try to provide a level of service they wouldn’t normally have at a campground,” said Stephanie Bias, general manager of Camp Aramoni. When guests book a tent, they don’t have to pack any gear or food. “Just pack your overnight bag, and we do the rest.”

There’s nothing primitive about the camping experience on the grounds nestled against the Vermilion River. Every tent has wifi access, plumbing, heating and air conditioning, a mini fridge, a safe and

provided toiletries. Mini bars also will be available this season. Breakfast and dinner at The Barn, an on-site dining hall, are included in the room fee.

“We also offer room service,” Bias said. “When you stay with us, you can text our staff at any time. If you want a drink brought to your room, or extra towels, or anything, we’re available 24/7. When guests are here, it is important to us that we’re at their service and they can contact us whenever they need to.”

Despite the luxury, the grounds still boast a rural charm. Camp Aramoni is in the unincorporated community of Lowell, a locality so small it doesn’t have its own ZIP code but instead piggybacks on nearby Tonica’s ZIP code.

The glamping, or “glamorous camping,” site is the innovation of Stephanie’s mother, Jennifer Bias. After their family took a glamping trip at a farm in northern Illinois, Jennifer was inspired to build a luxury campground in her home region of Starved Rock Country.

WHAT’S IN A NAME?

Camp Aramoni is alongside the Vermilion River, which originally was known as the Aramoni River. The word Aramoni is from the MiamiIllinois Native American lexicon and describes the red clay people of their nation used to decorate their bodies. The Ristokrat Clay Products Company later excavated clay on the grounds for brickmaking.

“We’re a family-owned business,” Stephanie Bias said. “My family found the property in 2017. … My mom’s cousin lives next door. She was talking about how fun it would be to have a glamp ground, and [her cousin] said, ‘You know, there’s a hundred acres that’s been for sale for 40 years. You should come out and look at it.’”

The 96-acre property is the site of the former Ristokrat Clay Products Company, a brickyard where workers handled about 12,000 bricks a day from 1870 to 1981. The meadow where the tents stand is where the company used to excavate clay for the bricks.

“When the brickyard closed in 1981, the EPA came in and filled the pit,” Bias said. “This meadow was out here for 40 years untouched.”

The location offered prime woods and a meadow alongside the river a short distance from the rapids –

Vermillion River Rafting company is based less than a minute’s drive up the road. However, the property required a substantial cleanup operation. Over the years, the grounds had collected various debris, such as 400 tires in need of proper disposal.

Despite the detritus, Jennifer Bias visualized the land’s potential. From 2017 to 2021, the Bias family reformed the site into a nature haven where guests can hike trails, canoe on a pond, ride bicycles and even take fishing lessons on a stocked pond with provided gear and bait. The campgrounds conducted a soft opening in 2021 and opened for its first full season in 2022.

Remnants of the brick industry still stand at Bricks & Stones, Camp Aramoni’s event venue next door to the campground. The facility used to house Ristokrat’s blacksmith shop but has been converted into a popular

destination for weddings, retreats, baby and bridal showers, reunions and more.

Three of the former brickyard’s 23 kilns still stand on the Bricks & Stones grounds. Four towering pillars, originally part of a brickyard conveyor system, also stand on the premises.

“We left the pillars for two reasons. One, they go 12 feet down and we could not move them,” Stephanie Bias noted with a laugh. “But they do look cool, so we added Edison bulbs. People like to have their wedding ceremonies there, and dancing. We’re very flexible with the property.”

Bricks & Stones is open to both the public and Camp Aramoni guests from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays during the campground season, which runs April through October. The venue operates as a restaurant on Wednesday nights serving casual but high-quality meals.

u Gertie’s is a general store located inside The Barn dining hall. It is named after a diner that once stood across from the brickyard.

u Complimentary campfires and gourmet s’mores are provided nightly at each tent.

Aramoni is a luxury experience. Chef Carson Barger cultivates a menu that includes many herbs and vegetables raised on site, plus locally sourced and seasonally foraged ingredients.

“A lot of the stuff that grows here is actually edible,” Barger said. “We’ve harvested goldenrod to make tea.

We’ve harvested nodding onion to make vinegars. We’ve harvested serviceberries, and used clover for garnish. … This is the perfect climate for mushrooms, and we get them throughout all the seasons.”

Guests have the option of dining at The Barn on the campgrounds or at Bricks & Stones on Wednesdays.

“A lot of people do like to come up to Bricks & Stones because there’s live music. There’s more energy,” Bias said.

“Others prefer a more intimate dinner and stay down at the campgrounds.”

The campgrounds are closed to the public; only guests have access to the premises. Bias said that’s a highlight for people who want to connect with nature without the crowds that flock to

nearby Starved Rock and Matthiessen state parks.

“When you’re here at any given time, there’s not going to be more than 40 people,” Bias said. The privacy provides guests a peaceful opportunity to experience the outdoors. For some visitors, it’s their first time encountering nature up close. Bias recalled a conversation with an elementary school-aged girl who

lives in downtown Chicago and was awed by the sight of a star-sequined sky for the first time in her life.

“We want people to come out, experience nature, unplug,” Bias said. Ultimately, that’s the Camp Aramoni mission. It’s a place to relax. To connect with the outdoors. To indulge in a slice of luxury.

Camp Aramoni is a place to breathe.

SADDLE UP

Spend your summer on horseback with Kane County stables and programs

Whether you’re a seasoned rider or have never come face-toface with a horse in your life, horseback riding can be one of the most pleasurable pastimes a person can experience. Did you know that horseback riding is good for you mentally as well as physically? It’s a scientific fact that it is relaxing and stress-reducing.

There are a number of ways to experience horseback riding in Kane County. Some trail riding areas cater to inexperienced riders, since the horses pretty much know the trails and do all the work for you. Others are bringyour-own horse. Kane County is full of places where you can ride or learn to ride.

Huntoon Stables in North Aurora is a fourth-generation horse stable. Melinda Huntoon, who married into the family after taking lessons at the stable, has been teaching for decades and gives around 85 lessons a week, mostly to kids.

Huntoon advises parents to start with two trial lessons. “It’s a little harder than they think it’s going to be. This way they can decide if they want to continue. With trail riding they just sit and ride and follow a guide, which is fine, but when you ride by yourself, it’s up to you. You need to learn to control the horse.” Huntoon says a good estimation as to how long it takes to learn to ride is around three to four months, adding, “If you really want to learn, it’s a lifetime commitment.”

Huntoon Stables starts with private lessons, then moves up to group riding. The stable hosts two stable shows each year so kids can work toward a goal.

If you have your own horse, the Forest Preserve District of Kane County has plenty of locations for equestrian riding. Trails are now open for the season and only shut down when the weather makes the surface too wet. “We have parking lots designated for trucks and trailers,” says the District’s North Operations Manager Jenny Estes. “We do have some trails designated as multi-use that are usually

NEIGHBORHOOD TOURIST SUMMER 2023 35

in favor of the equestrian.” Bike riders and hikers are encouraged to be aware so as not to startle horses, and riders are not allowed in campground areas.

Experienced riders may be interested to know that the district has volunteer mounted ranger opportunities to patrol the preserves on horseback. To volunteer contact coordinator Rob Cleave at 630-762-2741. For more information on the district’s riding trails, visit the district website at www.kaneforest.com.

Horsepower Therapeutic Riding in St. Charles is an example of yet another aspect of horseback riding — therapy.

“On any given week we have 65 students ranging in age from 3 to over 80 with physical, cognitive, social and emotional challenges,” says Executive Director Barbara O’Neil. From hearing loss to amputation to autism,

depression, anxiety and more, equineassisted therapy has been a proven tool since the late 1800s.

“It’s pretty amazing,” says O’Neil, who’s run the nonprofit for 9 years.

Students choose their horse when they arrive. “Everyone gravitates to something different,” says O’Neil. “We just let that happen. Students develop an affinity for a certain horse.” There are other, smaller animals for those who don’t gravitate to horses, but for those who do, mounted or ground-based therapy is available. Some choose to interact with the horse without riding, “especially trauma survivors,” says O’Neil, while others want the experience of riding. “I’ve seen it save lives. It gives people hope. It gives them a sense of value and purpose,” she says. “Some have spoken their first words on horseback. It’s pretty magical stuff.”

40 Years Strong

Mill Race Cyclery evolves across decades in Geneva

For 40 years, Mill Race Cyclery in Geneva has been owned and operated by Bruce Heidlauf, a man who started his decadeslong career in high school with Bruce’s Bike Repair.

“I basically repaired bikes out of my mom and dad’s garage in St. Charles,” says Heidlauf. “I did that from 17 all the way through college. My junior year in college is when I started Mill Race Cyclery. I started at the Mill Race Inn and set it up as a rental shop for them, then I bought out their portion six months later.”

As the business evolved, so did the cyclery’s space. “The first building was where the current parking lot is now,” says Heidlauf. “They were just starting the bike trail at that time between Geneva and St. Charles. Then they went down to Batavia, but the trail was in its infancy. The shop was an immediate success, and everybody seemed excited, so I knew that’s where I wanted to be.”

When Heidlauf was building his existing shop, he focused on creating enough space for the growth of his bicycle business. “I quickly outgrew the small building I started in and I had an opportunity to expand and build my current building about 28-29 years ago,” says Heidlauf. “The design looks like it’s been there a long time and it is bigger than it looks.

The bike shop is laid out in such a way that we have tall enough ceilings to hang bicycles from them in order to use our space efficiently. We also included an ice cream shop for cyclists on the path to easily stop for a treat.”

From the start, Mill Race Cyclery has been a popular source for bike rentals, and they have expanded their rental stock to kayaks, canoes and electric bikes. The shop proudly boasts that they have grown to offer the largest selection of electric bikes in the Chicagoland

area. Inside the shop, you not only find an expert staff of bike mechanics, but also a café serving espresso drinks, smoothies, ice cream treats and sandwiches. For the past four decades, Heidlauf has built a successful business and an even more meaningful, successful relationship with the Geneva community. Heidlauf often acts as the lead rider for Geneva running races, hosts weekly group rides from the shop that are open invite to the community, and is an active member of the Geneva Chamber board. Heidlauf is passionate about fostering active lifestyles in his community.

“We’re trying to fit people with the right kind of bicycles so they can be healthy and enjoy themselves and the outside,” Heidlauf says. “It’s been a really fun part of the business. We do our best to service the community when it comes to bicycles and that’s been really rewarding.”

For their upcoming anniversary, the bike shop will have a celebration on July 15 to mark the momentous occasion.
