You’re tired. You’re breastfeeding. You can’t pull yourself away from your sweet newborn. Or you can’t fit into your old exercise clothes. There are lots of reasons for new moms to put off exercising. But when it comes to regaining your pre-baby figure, it’s better to start sooner than later, with your doctor’s approval, of course. The important thing is to manage your expectations and allow at least 6 to 12 months to get back in shape. If you try too hard to do too much too soon – you’re likely to find yourself exhausted and discouraged – and less likely to continue. So as you get started, AdventHealth offers these tips and words of encouragement:
1 Be realistic about your weight loss. About one pound per week is a safe amount of weight to lose postpartum and will not affect your milk supply. 2 Get a routine. The best way to get your body back to its pre-pregnancy shape is by doing a little exercise regularly. And remember, making your workout fun helps make it a priority. 3 If breastfeeding, be sure to exercise after feeding/pumping to avoid discomfort and engorged breasts, and wear extra supportive bras. 4 Postpartum incontinence is a real thing. Which means no running or jumping during this time. 5 Protect your ligaments and joints by staying away from exercises that are jerky and quick. Don’t overstretch.

6 Your abdominal muscles take time to recover. Choose planks and variations of planks over crunches. 7 Make fitness a lifestyle, not a shortterm fix. It won’t be long until your little one will be running. You’ll want to keep up.

Here’s a New Spin on a Centuries-Old Favorite: Bright Edamame Bean Hummus The word “hummus” is actually derived from the Arabic word for chickpeas. So this chickpea-free hummus is quite untraditional, but offers a lovely light green color, buttery texture and fresh tasting flavor. Edamame (young soybeans) is ideal for a smooth paste, and it’s also naturally gluten-free and vegan, made from healthy whole foods packed with nutrients! Try adding a touch of sesame oil for an Asian flair. Ingredients: 2 cups edamame beans 3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 2½ tablespoons olive or canola oil 2 teaspoons fresh garlic, minced ½ teaspoon cumin 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper 3 tablespoons water 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt Directions: 1. Measure ingredients and chop garlic. 2. Place all ingredients except water in a food processor. Let the mixture break down enough before adding the water so the mixture has a smooth instead of a coarse consistency. Edamame is a tasty and nutritious low-calorie snack option with some significant health benefits. In addition to being a decent source of soy protein, edamame is rich in healthy fiber, antioxidants and vitamin K. These plant compounds may reduce the risk of heart disease and improve the blood lipid profile, a measure of fats including cholesterol and triglycerides. Edamame is a quality protein source, providing all the essential amino acids. It’s also low in carbs, but rich in antioxidants and fiber that may help lower cholesterol levels. hether it’s child-proofing your home, teaching the kids how to navigate the internet safely or just trying to spare them from life’s disappointments, there’s nothing more important to parents than protecting your children. That’s why so many of today’s parents are doing something now to protect the next generation from dangers posed by HPV, or human papillomavirus, the most common sexually transmitted infection, which currently affects about 80 million people in the U.S. HPV refers to a group of more than 150 related viruses. About 40 strains are considered to be a sexually transmitted infection (STI). Each year, approximately 14 million more Americans are infected. “It is a virus that to which the vast majority of Americans have been exposed and the high-risk strains of the virus can cause cancers in a very small percentage of those exposed.” said Nicholas Wirtz, MD, ENT-Otolaryngology, AdventHealth Shawnee Mission. Cervical cancer – once the leading cause of cancer deaths among women in the U.S. – is almost exclusively caused by an HPV infection, although not all women with an HPV infection will develop cervical cancer. Every year in the United States, nearly 11,000 cases of cervical cancer are caused by HPV, and for over 4,000 women, this disease is fatal. But today, the HPV vaccine and cervical cancer screening have made it one of the most preventable cancers. That’s why it’s recommended for all girls and women between the ages of 9 and 26. The HPV vaccine is just as

important for boys and young men. Even though the U.S. was the first country to implement HPV vaccination for both genders, many parents and health care providers only feel it’s necessary to vaccinate girls and young women. However, statistics show that HPV can be just as dangerous for boys and men. Nearly four out of every 10 cases of cancer caused by HPV occur among men. And every year in the U.S., over 13,000 men get
Cervical cancer – once the leading cause of cancer deaths among women in the U.S. – is almost exclusively caused by a human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. cancers caused by HPV. In fact, head and neck cancers in men caused by HPV have been on a steady rise for the last 15 years, while most mouth and throat cancers have decreased significantly as smoking rates have declined. No wonder it’s also recommended that boys and men between 9 and 21 years of age should be vaccinated to protect against HPV. “Over 75 percent of cancers that arise in the tonsillar tissue in the back of the throat are caused by the HPV virus,” said Wirtz, “but studies have shown that the vaccine is very effective in reducing the number of people who carry the high-risk or cancer-causing strains that can lead to tonsillar cancer.” Signs and symptoms of head and
neck cancer include: 3 A lump in the neck 3 Lump or sore in mouth or throat 3 Hoarseness or change in voice 3 Swallowing problems 3 An earache that doesn’t go away 3 Bleeding: nose, mouth or throat 3 Numbness. What the HPV vaccine can – and can’t – do. It’s important to understand that the HPV vaccine is only effective for the prevention – not the treatment – of cancers of the head and neck. Thankfully, even though the incidence of head and neck cancer caused by HPV is steadily increasing, effective treatment is available for most people. Patients with HPVinduced throat cancer, for example, have a disease-free survival rate of 85 to 90 percent over five years. If you find out that you have HPV, you should work with your doctor to come up with a plan of action. “I recommend the HPV vaccine to my patients with young children,” said Wirtz. “It’s best to have children vaccinated before they become sexually active. The bottom line is, the vaccine has been proven safe and effective and has the potential to prevent a devastating cancer.” Visit MyHealthKC.com to find the right primary care doctor for you.

or new parents, the first months of a baby's life should be a time of incredible happiness and joy. After all, bringing a new life into the world is one of the most wonderful, blissful and empowering things in the universe. But for many new mothers, these months are marked by conflicting emotions. “Giving birth is an emotional roller coaster ride, from excitement and joy to fear and anxiety. Most often, new moms experience postpartum ‘baby blues’ beginning within two to three days after delivery, and lasting up to two weeks, commonly including mood swings, crying spells, anxiety and difficulty sleeping,” said Sabeen Khaliq, MD, Psychiatry, AdventHealth Shawnee Mission. In fact, research indicates that most women report these symptoms, all within the first week after giving birth. As a result, the “baby blues” can make a new mother feel alone, afraid and exhausted – not exactly the dreamy scenario most women had in mind. “In some cases, moms can experience a more severe, long lasting form of depression known as ‘postpartum depression,’” said Khaliq. These symptoms can last far beyond the first two weeks after delivery. Women with postpartum depression may feel hopeless and anxious. They may feel angry at their partner or at their baby. They may begin to wonder whether they are even cut out for motherhood. Postpartum depression is a form of major

depression, with symptoms that can include: 3 Loss of interest in activities 3 An inability to concentrate 3 Changes in sleep and appetite 3 Unexplained aches and pains 3 Psychomotor impairment 3 Fatigue, tiredness or loss of energy 3 A constant depressed mood 3 Anger or irritability 3 Depression can also be associated with thoughts of suicide. It is possible to reduce the chances of developing postpartum depression.
BABY BLUES
A good first step for expectant parents is to seek out friends, family or other support networks in advance of the delivery date. That way, the parents will have somewhere to turn for practical advice or to get help with childcare. Parents should also try to take naps during the daytime, whenever possible, to make up for sleep deprivation caused by night feedings. “Early screening is the main prevention. We suggest that primary care clinicians (including obstetricians and gynecologists) should screen all pregnant women for depression. This screening should be implemented with services in place to ensure follow-up for diagnosis and treatment,” said Khaliq. Postpartum depression can significantly affect maternal functioning, can lead to poor nutrition and health in the baby. It can also interfere with breastfeeding, maternalinfant bonding, care of the infant and other children and the woman’s relationship with her partner. However, it’s important to know that although postpartum depression is serious, it can be treated. “If a woman feels empty, emotionless, or sad all or most of the time for longer than two weeks during or after pregnancy,” said Khaliq, “she might be
suffering from postpartum depression and should seek medical help.” The sooner it is diagnosed, the sooner you can begin to enjoy the new member of your family.
Yes, men’s postpartum depression is real. Being a parent is hard. And being a new father of an infant is especially hard. And it’s stressful. But Paternal Postnatal Depression (PPND) is different. It’s a clinical condition. What Puts Men at Risk for Paternal Postnatal Depression? 3 A lack of good sleep 3 Changes in hormones 3 Personal history of depression 3 Relationship stress – with a partner or with in-laws 3 Excessive stress about becoming a parent or father 3 Nonstandard family (such as being unmarried or a stepfather) 3 Poor social functioning 3 A lack of support from others 3 Economic problems or limited resources 3 A sense of being excluded from the connection between the mother and baby As many as 1 in 4 new dads have postpartum depression. It’s a fact that most people – and even some health professionals – don’t know. But with proper treatment and support, men can fully recover from PPND.
Our postpartum emotional support group offers a safe and supportive atmosphere for families. For more information, call 913-632-4223.

Ask the Doctor
Malorie Howe, DO, OB/GYN, on PCOS hormonal condition What is Polycystic Ovary Syndrome? Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (or PCOS) is a multisystem disorder affecting about 5 to 8 percent of reproductiveaged women. The three, classic features of the disorder include high levels of hormones called androgens, many small cysts in the ovaries and no or irregular menstrual cycles – for example, a range of no periods for many months at a time often followed by heavy periods of bleeding. Other common symptoms include unwanted excessive hair growth, obesity, acne and infertility. Is POCS linked to other health problems? Women with PCOS have a 2 to 5 times increased risk of developing diabetes and should be tested for elevated glucose levels and other signs of developing diabetes. There is also a substantial increase in risk for cardiovascular
10
AdventHealth | Fall 2019
disease. Women with PCOS should be screened by determining their BMI, cholesterol levels and blood pressure. Women with PCOS are also at increased risk of endometrial cancer due to long time frames without menstruation. How is PCOS treated? The most effective therapy is lifestyle modification – including increased exercise and decreased caloric intake. Medical treatment often begins with birth control pills to help resume normal monthly periods. Insulin resistance is also improved with birth control pills. However, if there are signs of elevated blood sugars, then diabetic medications like metformin can help prevent fully developing diabetes. Unwanted hair growth can be slowed with birth control pills and anti-androgen medications like spironolactone.
If pregnancy is desired, weight loss as low as five percent of starting weight can lead to decreased androgens and resumption of ovulation. How does PCOS affect pregnancy? Many women with PCOS face issues with infertility. If pregnancy is achieved with ovulationinducing medications, the risk for twins or triplets is increased. Multiple pregnancies themselves are high risk and can lead to complications such as preterm labor and hypertension disorders of pregnancy. At AdventHealth, we know it’s important to have a doctor, but we want to help you find the right doctor. The Facts
Tech Neck Tech Neck may sound a little silly, but in fact, it’s a very weighty issue. Specifically, the weight of your head (10 to 12 pounds) increases significantly – and perilously – when it’s tilted forward to look at your smartphone screen. For example, with your head tilted just 15 degrees forward, the effect of the head’s weight is equal to 27 pounds. And when the tilt is 60 degrees forward, the effect can reach up to a whopping 60 pounds. As that weight increases and the spine falls further out of alignment, excess pressure is added to the spine. Over time, improper posture can lead to neck pain and herniated discs. In more serious cases, surgery may be required.
For Millions of People, Smartphones Are Literally Becoming a Pain in the Neck. Fortunately, there are several things you can do to defend yourself from the negative effects of tech neck. Try all or some of these methods and see which ones work for you. If your neck pain symptoms don’t improve, it may be time to seek help from a qualified health professional. 1. Raise your screen higher. Hold your phone or tablet up close to eye level to avoid sloping your head forward or bending your neck down. If your arms get tired from holding the screen higher, buy a holder to elevate your device or rest your elbows on a tabletop to prop your arms up comfortably. 2. Take breaks often. Develop the habit of taking a 2- or 3-minute break every half hour. Use these breaks to change your posture and move around, keeping your muscles loose and spine aligned.
Tech neck symptoms can include: • Pain in the upper back 3. Sit in a chair with a headrest.
