We all know that sports are beneficial for our physical health. But there’s even more good news. Participating in a sport can have a strong, positive effect on our mental health, too.
Strengthen Your Mind Regular physical activity helps keep your key mental skills sharp as you age. This includes critical thinking, learning and using good judgment.
Maintain a Healthy Weight Sports, such as running, cycling and weightlifting are all very effective ways to burn calories. And staying within a recommended weight range reduces the likelihood of developing diabetes, high cholesterol and hypertension.
Boost Your SelfConfidence With all that renewed vigor and energy that comes from physical activity, you may be more likely to succeed in tasks off the playing field, too.
Reduce Stress and Depression Physical activity distracts your mind from daily stressors, so you can avoid getting bogged down by negative thoughts. Plus, exercise stimulates production of endorphins – the natural mood lifters that can keep stress and depression at bay.

N To Help Your Hormones, Do What Comes Naturally
ot all women struggle with hormonal issues, but many experience some form of hormonal ups and downs. Stress problems, depression, anxiety, severe PMS and menopause symptoms can all be the result of hormonal imbalances. The good news is that many hormonal imbalances can be corrected – thanks to a healthier lifestyle and natural supplements – making a huge difference in your health, wellness and quality of life. A Little Background on Hormones “Hormones are chemical messengers in our body. They circulate in the blood and travel to organs and organ systems in our body, giving them action messages of what to do and when to do it,” said Megan Schlick, Naturopathic Doctor (ND), AdventHealth Shawnee Mission Holistic Care. Hormones regulate most major bodily processes, so a hormonal imbalance can affect a wide range of bodily functions, including: 3 metabolism and appetite 3 heart rate 3 sleep cycles 3 reproductive cycles and sexual function 3 general growth and development 3 mood and stress levels 3 body temperature.
Hormonal imbalances occur when there is too much or too little of a hormone in the bloodstream. Your body has many ways to letting you know when there’s a hormonal imbalance. “Signs and symptoms could include changes in cyclic length— either bleeding too frequently,
6
AdventHealth | Summer 2020
skipping a period during the month, or changes in menstrual flow—heavy and excessive bleeding or frequent “spotting” of your period,” said Schlick. Other, less obvious symptoms can range from fatigue to mood changes to sleep disruption to acne and other skin changes – to name just a few. Of course, if you’re experiencing these or similar symptoms, you should always share your symptoms and concerns with your primary care provider or gynecologist, who can determine if what you are experiencing is abnormal or needs treatment.
Hormonal imbalances occur when there is too much or too little of a hormone in the bloodstream But in many cases, there is great value in utilizing a natural approach to deal with hormonal imbalances. “Sometimes this means having a discussion with your providor about adding an oral contraceptive. Sometimes it’s an herb or nutritional supplement prescription. But most often, you can uncover your individual path to wellness by addressing the foundations of your health,” said Schlick. Here are some of the natural ways you can help balance your hormones: 3 Keep blood sugar balance in check. Eat sufficient protein with each meal—around 20 grams for most adults. Limit refined carbohydrates — processed foods containing white flour or white
Vitex agnus-castus: My go-to natural supplement Referred to as “Vitex” or “Chaste Tree Berry,” it’s one of my favorites because of its superb safety profile and multiple indications for use — PMS, luteal phase insufficiency, short menstrual cycle and irregular cycles to name a few. A 2001 British Medical Journal published a trial using Vitex for three consecutive menstrual cycles showing that Vitex was superior to placebo in women’s self-assessment of irritability, mood alterations, anger, headache, breast fullness and other menstrual symptoms including bloating. — Megan Schlick, ND
sugar. Stay away from sugary beverages which cause hormonal imbalance and can increase the risk of weight gain and developing diabetes. 3 Exercise regularly. Strength training, aerobics, walking or other physical activities can modify hormone levels to reduce the risk of disease and protect muscle mass as we age. But don’t overdo it. Excessive or high-intensity workouts can stress your body and disrupt hormone balance. 3 Learn to manage stress. Stress can wreak havoc on your hormones. Try to devote at least 10 to 15 minutes each day to stress-reducing activities like meditation, yoga and listening to soothing music. 3 Get good sleep. Poor sleep has been linked to many hormones, including insulin, cortisol, leptin, ghrelin and growth hormone. Aim for at least seven hours of high-quality sleep per night. 3 Maintain a healthy gut. Our bowels excrete used hormones, and when this process isn’t working optimally, hormonal imbalances can follow. 3 Limit canned foods and never microwave food in plastic containers. The lining of canned foods is sprayed with BPA, which
can bind with estrogen receptors and disrupt the hormonal system. Packaging marked “BPA free” may carry the same risks. Invest in non-plastic containers for food storage—glass/mason jars/Pyrex. 3 Consider natural supplements. Best results are seen when these nutrients are used under the guidance of health care practitioners knowledgeable about these options. Remember, our hormones are involved in every aspect of our health. Natural supplements, eating nutritious foods and engaging in other healthy behaviors can go a long way toward improving hormonal health. To schedule an appointment with Megan Schlick, ND, at AdventHealth Shawnee Mission Holistic Care, call 913-632-9860.
From Megan Schlick, Naturopathic Doctor AdventHealth Shawnee Mission Holistic Care Currently the only ND in Kansas and Missouri who works in an outpatient hospital setting, Schlick applies a wholeperson approach to care, recognizing the role the mind, body and spirit has in health and healing.

ongratulations, you’re pregnant! As your lifelong partner in whole health, AdventHealth wants you to have all the information and care you’ll need throughout your entire journey to motherhood. Here are some important things to do as your first steps. TAKE A DEEP BREATH
GREAT
THINGS TO DO WHEN YOU FIND OUT
YOU’RE
PREGNANT
Learning that you are expecting can bring many emotions — every woman may feel a range of feelings from excited to anxious to joyful – even a bit scared. “There is no need to freak out. Take a deep breath and be sure to assess your mental wellbeing as well as your physical health,” said Maureen King, MD, OB/Gyn, AdventHealth Shawnee Mission. “Taking a moment for a simple breathing exercise or guided meditation can have a positive impact when you’re feeling scared, stressed or overwhelmed.”
TRACK YOUR SYMPTOMS Your body will go through many changes during your pregnancy. Note any new or unusual things going on and report them to your health care provider at your appointment.
8
AdventHealth | Summer 2020
CONNECT WITH YOUR OB/GYN Establishing the OB who will guide you through from expecting to motherhood is a critical step in your journey. “It’s really important to get the pregnancy off to a good start with a visit to your OB/Gyn. Now is the perfect time to have a conversation with your doctor to assess your overall health and identify any medical concerns, and assure you are in the best health possible for this pregnancy,” said King.
KNOW YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE Your blood pressure is an important indicator of whole health.
5
GET YOUR REST Pregnancy can make you tired and fatigued, especially in the earlier weeks. Listen to your body and get the rest you need. Take naps. Sleep in. Go to bed early. Do what you have to do to nurture your whole health throughout your pregnancy.
PREGNANCY, CORONAVIRUS AND WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW Researchers are still learning how COVID-19 affects pregnant women. Current reports show that pregnant women do not have more serious symptoms than the general public. Some pregnant and postpartum women may feel uncertainty or anxiety because of COVID-19. “Reaching out to family and friends during this time may help. Phone calls, texts and online chats are safe ways to stay connected,” said King. Current research indicates it is not likely that COVID-19 passes to a baby during pregnancy, labor or delivery. But more research is needed on this. After birth, a newborn can become infected with COVID-19 if they are in close contact with an infected person. Check Centers for Disease Control and Prevention web pages – cdc.gov – for the most current information about COVID-19.
LET ADVENTHEALTH BE YOUR GUIDE
STAY ACTIVE It is especially important in pregnancy to stay active. Talk to your doctor about what is recommended for you. “You don’t have to join a gym, just small changes in your daily routine can help. Make it fun! Asking your partner or friend to join you will help you stick with it,” said King.
FOCUS ON YOUR NUTRITION It’s important to get adequate nutrition for the whole health of both you and your developing baby. “Your body is building a baby, so you need to give it all the building blocks it needs to grow. Start off by taking a daily prenatal vitamin — the sooner the better,” said King. Next, create a balanced diet that includes plenty of protein, fruits and vegetables and avoids foods that could be harmful to your baby, such as unpasteurized dairy and juices, certain seafood, undercooked meat and excessive amounts of caffeine.
We’re committed to providing you with the best women’s care available. Learn more about our prenatal classes that will help you prepare to welcome your new family member into the world. We know the safety of you and your child is your biggest concern when having a baby. It’s ours, too. At AdventHealth Shawnee Mission, we exceed strict national standards for the health of moms and babies. And by caring for 5,000 families each year, our experience ensuring the safest delivery possible is clear. We’re here to do everything in our power to empower you on your journey to parenthood. Ask the Doctor
Sabeen Khaliq, MD, psychiatry, on staying mentally strong What kinds of mental health problems are prevalent in these uncertain times? COVID-19 will affect us all to varying degrees. You may notice an increase in some of the following feelings: 3 feeling stressed and anxious 3 fearing that normal aches and pains might be the virus 3 excessively checking for symptoms, in yourself, or others 3 becoming irritable more easily 3 feeling insecure or unsettled 3 having trouble sleeping 3 feeling helpless or a lack of control 3 having irrational thoughts. Acknowledging, recognizing and acting on mental distress in these uncertain times is key to lessening the impact.
What are some ways to regain a sense of calm during times of anxiety?
Why is self-care so important during these unsettling times?
Talk about it. Sharing your concerns with friends and family can help you put things in perspective. Take care of yourself. Eat healthy, tasty meals. Pursue your favorite activities. Become immersed in pleasurable activities to dispel anxiety, at least temporarily. Get regular exercise. Physical activity affects the nervous system in ways that reduce stress. Just 30 minutes per day of walking can help boost your mood. Use calming techniques. Learning techniques to counter stress can improve your mood, reduce your health risks and enhance your appreciation of daily life.
It’s simple. Only by taking care of ourselves can we take care of others – whether they’re family, friends or co-workers.
How can someone cultivate feelings of hope and/or optimism these days? Preserving a positive mindset is achievable by maintaining mindfulness, optimism and gratitude. For example, listen to another person’s story when you’re feeling down. It can help to get out of your own head. Engage in activities and distractions – such as art, music, writing, cooking, reading and playing with your kids. These activities will have a positive impact on your neurochemistry and help lessen stress.
The AdventHealth Behavioral Health Assessment Center is an important part of our commitment to your whole person wellness. It’s our starting point to not only treat your current symptoms, but also address your concerns at the root of the problem now and into the future. Assessments are free and available by appointment. To get started, call 913-789-3218.

The Facts
What You Don’t Know About Health Insurance Can Hurt You The more you understand how health insurance works, the better decisions you’ll be able to make. Health insurance is a smart way to help you manage your health care costs. The idea is simple: You pay health care companies premiums — a set amount of money each month — and you get benefits to pay for your eligible health care expenses. This can include regular doctor checkups or injuries to treatment for long-term illnesses. But navigating your way through health insurance benefits can be a real challenge. It’s very important to understand the terminology – especially when deciding which benefits will work for you and finding a plan that will best meet your needs. We’ve prepared “A Guide to Understanding Health Insurance” with helpful, comprehensive information at MyHealthKC.com. Visit today and get all the information you need so you’re prepared for when you or your family have medical needs.
