Hunting For an Exciting and Wholesome Children’s Activity? Since 1978, the Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead has been home to animals, birds and attractions that cultivate an appreciation of farm life and Kansas heritage. Parents will treasure memories of children bottle-feeding baby goats, milking cows and riding horse-drawn wagons through the woods. The Deanna Rose Scavenger Hunt was created by AdventHealth to help children learn through play. When your child participates in a scavenger hunt, he or she practices important skills like: Problem solving. Looking for answers to clues and prompts allows children to practice problemsolving in a tangible and rewarding way. Acting out problem-solving methods reinforces these lessons and increases mental retention as children continue to learn and grow.
Teamwork. When done in a group, scavenger hunts teach kids the value of teamwork and promote social interaction. Working together to solve clues and taking turns help children develop important social skills that lay the foundation for how they relate to others throughout their lives.
Gross motor skills. Walking and running from place to place gets children moving their bodies. This whole-body movement using large muscle groups helps small children develop better coordination and control of their arms, legs and other large body parts.
Visit Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead April 1 through Oct. 31. Download and print your free copy of the scavenger hunt at MyHealthKC.com/Resources.

AdventHealth Expanding in Lenexa City Center AdventHealth is continuing to grow in Kansas City. In early April, we submitted plans for an expanded campus in Lenexa City Center. This will initially include a Centra Care and Primary Care, which will eventually be part of a 25-acre wellness campus that will bring the concept of “feeling whole” to life, with services that treat the body, mind and spirit. The design will reflect the unique suburban downtown environment of Lenexa City Center and will redefine what health care looks like in Kansas City – much more like modern retail than traditional health care. We’re still designing the exact components of this campus and will continue to share as we have more specific plans identified.

S N S G O I N T I P D E N C A R T E S P ER S I M UND S I &M With any luck, you may only have to visit an emergency room a handful of times in your life. Maybe never. Even so, you may already have some very clear ideas – and fears – about what the ER experience is like. Hollywood often portrays emergency rooms as hectic, disorganized places where you can be stuck in a cubicle and forgotten about for hours. But what happens in a real ER is a long way from that. So, let’s clear up some of the most common myths and misperceptions, and put an end to the concerns that might stop you from going to your local ER when you need it most.

TH MY 1 #
You’re Going to Be Ignored for Hours
The fact is, everyone in our ER department is highly-motivated to treat patients quickly. “We utilize a system of triage during high volume times,” said John Bradley, DO, Emergency Medicine, AdventHealth, “allowing us to quickly categorize the critical/ unstable patients from the stable patients, so we can treat everyone in a safe, efficient manner.” By the way, the average wait time to see a physician is just seven minutes at our South Overland Park and Lenexa ERs, and just a bit longer at our 75th Street campus.
TH MY2 #
The ER Is Disorganized and Inefficient
“It may not look like it to an outsider,” said Bradley, “but to those of us inside the ER, everything is extremely organized and focused on providing each patient the most appropriate care as soon as possible.” AdventHealth emergency rooms are fully staffed on a 24/7 basis by Board-certified physicians and registered nurses, who are qualified to treat all urgent cases. Facilities include radiology and lab services, pharmacy and ambulance, and ERs offer care for patients of all ages with almost all conditions. “For those conditions requiring full hospitalization,” said Bradley, “we can easily arrange admission to the hospital from the ER, including our free-standing emergency departments in Lenexa and South Overland Park. “The bottom line,” said Bradley, “is when you come to the ER, you’ll experience the best medicine today’s health care system has to offer.”
TH MY3 #
You Should Only Consider Taking Your Child to a Pediatric ER
All Board-certified ER physicians receive extensive training in pediatric emergencies. So you can be confident they are fully prepared to deal with these emergencies. When your child has an allergic reaction, an animal bite or a sudden fever, you don’t have the time to get an appointment with a regular pediatrician. That’s when your local ER offers you the medical care you need. In fact, as a family-oriented community hospital in the greater Kansas City metro, AdventHealth is one of the area’s leading health care providers for pediatric ER patients. “Because of our high volume of pediatrics,” said Bradley, “we have a very close relationship with Children’s Mercy Hospital. So, if a child does require hospitalization, we can arrange admission straight into CMH.”
TH MY4 #
The ER Provides a Different Level of Care for Someone Without Insurance
Many people believe that, without insurance, they won’t get treated in the ER. But since 1986, emergency medical providers are required by federal law to provide a medical screening exam regardless of insurance status or ability to pay. This examination is performed prior to obtaining financial status or insurance information. “At AdventHealth KC, we’ve always provided emergency care to our community, regardless of ability to pay,” said Bradley. “Everyone is treated with the highest level of care here by our ER medical professionals. That’s our mission – to help our community feel whole.”

ood things come to those who wait, right? Well, marriage and parenthood are two of the good things people are waiting longer to enjoy. In fact, since 1960, the average age for a woman to get married has risen from 20 to 27. So it’s not too surprising that more and more women are waiting until later in life to have kids – delivering healthy babies throughout their 30s and beyond. In fact, there has been a noticeable shift in women’s age at the time of delivery since the early 1990s. Overall pregnancy rates in the United States have decreased in women under age 30 and increased in those over age 30. Today, about 15 percent of women in the US are 35 or older when they give birth. “One thought is that there have been advances in reproductive technology,” said Jessica Lutz, MD, OB/GYN, “including in-vitro fertilization (IVF), which have allowed women to get pregnant much later in life.” Another factor in this rise in maternal age is that many women in their 20s are completing their education and launching their careers before starting a family. “Many studies show that women who have babies in their 30s have the advantage of career success, financial security, stronger relationships with their partners,” said Lutz. “And they are more emotionally prepared for childbirth and for raising a child.”
All the rewards of becoming a parent, along with some risks. Medically speaking, if you have a baby when you’re 35 years or older, it’s called advanced maternal age, and it simply means you are more likely than younger women to have certain conditions and complications that may put you and your baby at risk. For example, some women may experience difficulty getting pregnant. “Then, once she is pregnant, a woman 35 or older may experience pregnancy-related complications, including diabetes, hypertension or high blood pressure, and preeclampsia,” said Lutz. “She may also have a risk of a multiple pregnancy, which means being pregnant with more than one baby.” Infants born to mothers age 35 and older may experience premature or pre-term birth, low birth weight, aneuploidies (chromosome problems, including Down syndrome) and the most feared complication of stillbirth. Overall, these risks don’t increase significantly until you’re over 40, and even then, they’re typically greater in women who are pregnant with their first child. Despite these challenges, most women of advanced maternal age have healthy, successful pregnancies.
From Jessica Lutz, MD, OB/GYN AdventHealth Shawnee Mission Dr. Lutz received her medical degrees from the University of Kansas School of Medicine, and spent her residency in at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center – Oklahoma City, Okla.

If you’re 35+, there’s a lot you can do to protect the health of yourself and your baby. Before pregnancy, patients may benefit from a pre-pregnancy health care visit with their OB/GYN. This visit would review your medical and family history, discuss healthy weight, diet and lifestyle, ensure that you are up-to-date on your vaccinations and discuss disease carrier testing with your provider. It is also important to optimize any current medical problems, including diabetes. Women should be sure to be on a prenatal vitamin with folic acid before becoming pregnant. “Regardless of age, it is important for all pregnant women to attend prenatal visits and maintain a healthy lifestyle,” said Lutz. “This includes remaining physically active and eating a healthy diet.”
Being an “older mom” is nothing new. At what ages did women have babies long before there was family planning or birth control? Historians have studied maternal ages of early U.S. and Canadian settler populations from 1650 to the late 1800s. They learned that the average age at last birth ranged from 39 to 42. Their conclusion was that advanced maternal age is not unusual or extraordinary. In fact, for centuries, it was totally normal.
If you are over the age of 35, we will work with you to help ensure the best possible outcomes for you and your baby. Join us in person for a free tour of the AdventHealth Shawnee Mission Birth Center. Do you already know you’re having your baby here? You can register for your birth online or in your doctor’s office. Learn more at AdventHealthKC.com/BirthCenter.

Ask the Doctor
Mariana Mack, MD, Psychiatry, on youth & teen mental health challenges. How can parents identify mental health issues in their child? Identifying mental health issues in a child or teen can have a lot of the same overlap as adults, such as: significant mood changes, behavior changes, worry, loss of interest in activities and friends, trouble concentrating, substance use, selfharm behaviors and appetite changes with weight loss or gain. Kids will also tend to have physical complaints such as headaches and/or stomachaches and fear. Do parents fear their child may suffer from the stigma attached to mental health issues? Mental health stigma seems to be improving with education, but it’s still present, unfortunately. For parents, the worry is that a label may follow their child through their schooling into adulthood. There’s also
10
AdventHealth | Summer 2019
the worry that it’s the result of bad parenting. Are most parents willing to admit their child may have mental health issues? Typically, they are not very willing initially. It’s a scary prospect to think your child may have a mental health issue, and admitting it makes it feel more real. You wouldn’t hear a parent whisper that their child has diabetes because they’re afraid of what other parents would think. Depression and other mental health disorders need to be thought of the same way. It’s more common than you’d think and that’s where the breaking down of stigma becomes so important. Do many parents attempt to handle their child’s mental health challenges themselves? Yes, they do, for various reasons – fear of stigma, not wanting their child to be on medication,
difficulty with access to care, minimizing the severity of their child’s symptoms, fear of the unknown or thinking it will pass. Is the concern about suicide always part of the equation when dealing with youth/ teen mental health? Yes, the concern of suicide should always be part of the equation. Parents are afraid that if they ask or talk about suicide that they are putting those thoughts in their child’s head which is absolutely not true. It may not be a comfortable or easy topic, but by talking about it and admitting that it’s a difficult topic, parents open the door for their children to feel safe and comfortable in future discussions. If your child is experiencing mental health challenges, call AdventHealth’s Behavioral Health Assessment Center at 913-789-3218.

How to drop the dairy, tastefully Whether you need to give up dairy for health reasons – like lactose intolerance or a milk allergy – or you’re simply choosing to consume more plant-based foods, there are plenty of delicious substitutes for all the major dairy foods, so you can drop the dairy without sacrificing flavor.
Cooking substitutions are a great way to transform your tried-and-true recipes into something better for you. AdventHealth and MyHealthKC have rounded up the best substitutes for dairy, placing them all in a handy guide and printable cheat sheet. FO R M I LK | Soy milk is a great alternative to cow’s milk because its protein content is similar, and most brands are fortified with calcium and vitamins. A number of other dairy-free milks are made from nuts and seeds, including almond, cashew, hemp and flax. If they’re enriched, they are similar to regular milk in nutritional content, and are naturally rich in other vitamins, minerals and health benefits – like vitamin E in almond milk, antioxidants in cashew milk, all 10 amino acids in hemp milk and heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids in flax milk. Rice milk is best for people who have allergies to soy and nuts, although it has less nutritional value. FO R B UT TE R | In baked recipes, use coconut oil in place of butter. It’s slightly higher in calories and saturated fats than butter but won’t negatively affect the texture of your baked goods. In cooking, substitute coconut or olive oil for butter. FO R C H E E S E | Nuts have a rich, creamy texture, so it makes sense to use them as the base for dairy-free cheese. Or buy dairyfree cheese made from a base of coconut or flour. If you’re looking for a cheese with chewier consistency, like cottage or ricotta, use crumbled tofu instead. Keep in mind, dairy-free cheeses are not dramatically healthier than dairy cheese, and they tend to have much less protein. FO R YO G U RT | Lots of dairy-free yogurts are now made with soy or nuts and are just as delicious and nutritious as dairy yogurt, including the gut-friendly probiotics. Silken tofu is a great alternative too, especially for soup recipes that call for a scoop of sour cream or plain yogurt for thickness and creaminess. Just puree some tofu and stir it in.
