Finding Time to Do More for Your Heart Experts agree that regular physical activity is a great way to improve and maintain a healthy heart. Regular physical activity has been proven to help: 3 Boost energy 3 Improve cognition, including focus, concentration and memory 3 Improve mood and reduce stress 3 Maintain a healthy weight 3 Reduce the risk of heart disease. So let’s look at the recommended exercise guidelines: 150 minutes of exercise each week, along with at least two days of weight training. That may seem like a lot (only about one in five adults is meeting the guidelines), but you can break up your physical activity into 10-minute sessions throughout your week – and still get all the health benefits of exercise.
Here are some simple ideas to get moving: 1 Wake up 15 minutes early to get in a little extra aerobic activity, such as jumping jacks, pushups or crunches.

Roasted Red Pepper and Squash Melange With Whole Wheat Pasta Simple and fast. What more could anyone ask for in a main course meal? Roasting and peeling the peppers is an easy way to increase the flavors and gives the dish a bit of sophistication, and the combo of squash adds variety and great nutrition. The essence of each vegetable combines to make an appetizing boost for whole wheat pasta and letting the entire dish rest for a minute or two will allow the pasta to soak up all that goodness.
Ingredients: 3 tablespoons olive oil 1 red bell pepper (roasted, peeled and seeded, cut into strips) 1 cup yellow onions, diced 1 lb. dried whole wheat pasta 1 green bell pepper (roasted, peeled and seeded, cut into strips) ¾ cup Parmesan cheese 3 tablespoons garlic, minced 1 ½ cups zucchini squash, chopped 1 ½ cups yellow squash, chopped 2 cups portobello mushrooms 1 cup basic chicken stock 4 plum tomatoes, chopped ¼ cup Italian parsley ¼ cup fresh basil chiffonade Directions: 1. Coat peppers with pan spray and roast them in the oven at 350˚F for 20 to 30 minutes. 2. Place them in a small bowl and cover for five minutes so that the pepper collapses within its own skin and is easier to peel. 3. Cook pasta following the package directions. 4. Sauté onions, mushrooms and garlic in olive oil, adding the squash, sauté to al dente. 5. Fold in the rest of the ingredients and simmer for five minutes to incorporate all the flavor. Fold vegetable mixture into the pasta and serve. Yield: 12 (6 ½ oz.) servings Prep Time: 20 minutes Cooking Time: 15 minutes Created by Chef Edwin Cabrera Copyright © AdventHealth Press To find more delicious recipes, visit MyHealthKC.com. Your Best Guide on the Journey to Heart Health:
6
AdventHealth | Winter 2020
L
ike many women, the only doctor you see each year may be your OB/GYN. That means your annual well woman exam is a vital opportunity to evaluate your heart health and be counseled about what you can do to keep your heart healthy. After all, cardiovascular disease continues to be the leading cause of death in women, and 90 percent of women have at least one risk factor for heart disease and stroke. To make things worse, fewer than half – only 45 percent – of women know their number one health danger is heart disease. While OB/GYNs may not seem a natural choice for promoting heart health, they can actually be a vital source of information and care for patients. Women in particular can develop risk factors related to their hormones or due to pregnancy that can increase their chance of heart disease decades later. And many women also rely on their OB/GYNs as their primary or only source of medical care. “We are often the gateway for women because we see them annually. Many women may not see another physician if they don’t have other health issues,” said Ana Martinez, MD, OB/GYN, AdventHealth Shawnee Mission.
OB/GYNs are uniquely qualified to identify and treat woman-specific conditions and treatments that may raise a woman’s risk of heart disease or stroke. Traditional risk factors for heart disease – such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol and obesity – may affect women differently than men. Regular health milestones like menopause and pregnancy can affect heart health and could create the potential for heart disease risks decades before they actually appear. Pregnancy complications such as preeclampsia and gestational diabetes can also increase the mother’s cardiovascular risk.
“We are often the gateway for women because we see them annually.” “We see women annually for their well woman exam which allows us to address issues related to their health. When we do a heart health screen at the visit, it would typically include weight, blood pressure, lipid panel and a thorough medical health history. If a woman has a lot of risk factors, like family history of early heart disease, personal history of heart disease or any elevations or issues, she can be referred to a cardiologist,” said Martinez. A joint effort between OB/GYNs and cardiologists can help ensure that women get the care they need and have an opportunity to prevent future heart events.
The goal is preventing heart problems in the future. Getting women to start thinking about heart health early is key. That’s because the earlier in life that positive lifestyle changes are incorporated, the greater the effect on a women’s overall health. As noted earlier, at least 90 percent of women have more than one cardiovascular risk factor. But the good news is that many of these risk factors can be modified – usually through diet and exercise. “The best advice is a heart healthy diet rich in fiber and fruits and vegetables and healthy fats like those derived from nuts, plants and seeds, as well as fattier fish like salmon. Limiting sugar and processed foods is also important, and an active lifestyle with even moderate exercise is helpful. We know that exercise strengthens heart and improves health of blood vessels. Stopping smoking is important as well as limiting alcohol use to moderate levels,” said Martinez. “These may all seem tough to do in our busy day-to-day lives, but they’re essential to good health and healthy hearts!” To find the right OB/GYN for you, visit MyHealthKC.com.
From Ana Martinez, MD, OB/GYN, AdventHealth Shawnee Mission Ana Martinez, MD, is a Board-certified OB/GYN. She received her medical degree from the Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University in 1996 and completed her residency at the Medical College of Georgia.

T
hese days, there’s a tremendous focus on removing the chaos in our lives. From managing and juggling home, work, relationships, finances, health, errands and everything in between, life can certainly be described as chaotic. But what if the chaos is in your heart? That’s the medical description of atrial fibrillation or AFib – it’s when the heart’s two upper chambers (the atria) beat irregularly and chaotically – out of coordination with the two lower chambers (the ventricles) of the heart. With about 150,000 new cases diagnosed each year, AFib is the most common type of heart rhythm disturbance (or arrhythmia). “Some patients with AFib will feel the fast, irregular heart rhythm. Some will have dizziness and lightheadedness. Others will feel short of breath, chest pain and fatigued,” said Obadah Al Chekakie, MD, Cardiology, Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology, AdventHealth Medical Group Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery at Shawnee Mission. AFib can pose a serious danger. Even when symptoms are not noticeable, AFib can increase a person's risks for stroke and related heart problems. Left untreated, atrial fibrillation doubles the risk of heart-related deaths and is associated with a five-fold increased risk for stroke. “Sometimes AFib is discovered at the doctor’s office, since some people might
From Obadah Al Chekakie, MD, Cardiology, AdventHealth Medical Group Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery at Shawnee Mission Dr. Al Chekakie is a cardiac electrophysiologist who is an expert in arrhythmia management and sudden cardiac death prevention. He performs comprehensive electrophysiology studies of the heart, ablation therapy, cardiac rhythm management and device implantation. Dr. Al Chekakie is Board-certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Medicine, Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology, Echocardiography and Nuclear Cardiology.
think their symptoms of fatigue and shortness of breath are due to age and lack of exercise,” said Al Chekakie. “Typically, when the physical exam shows an irregular rhythm, an electrocardiogram is done and usually gives the diagnosis.” Of those with atrial fibrillation, about two percent are 40 to 60 years old, about six percent are between 60 and 65, and about 70 percent are 65 to 85. Today, there are more ways to treat AFib than ever. “Treatment of AFib aims at preventing strokes, controlling the heart rate and restoring normal rhythm to the heart,” said Al Chekakie. “For stroke prevention, patients might be required to take a blood thinner to prevent clots from forming in the upper chambers of the heart.” In some cases, a more invasive treatment might be necessary, especially for those experiencing longer spells of AFib. For example, ablation which works by scarring or destroying tissue in your heart to disrupt faulty electrical signals causing the arrhythmia. There's also an alternative to blood thinners called WATCHMAN – the only FDA-approved implant proven to reduce stroke risk in people with atrial fibrillation not caused by a heart valve problem. And for more chronic forms of atrial fibrillation, the electrophysiologist (EP) and cardiac surgeon team up to perform a procedure called the Convergent approach. This is a minimally invasive ablation procedure that restores the heart to a normal rhythm. The most important thing for anyone with AFib is to get treatment quickly. “The longer the patient stays in AFib, the more difficult it gets to get them out of AFib,” said Al Chekakie. To help you learn more about your heart health, AdventHealth offers HeartAware, a free, online heart disease risk assessment program. Visit AdventHealth.com/Heart to take the assessment.
Go Red for Women Once again, AdventHealth is proud to be the Presenting Medical Sponsor for Go Red for Women in Kansas City, the movement to end heart disease and stroke in women on Friday, May 15 at the Overland Park Convention Center.
To reduce your risk for the onset of AFib, the American Heart Association recommends maintaining a hearthealthy lifestyle as your best option. 3 Get regular physical activity 3 Eat a heart-healthy diet, low in salt, saturated fats, trans fats and cholesterol 3 Manage high blood pressure 3 Avoid excessive amounts of alcohol and caffeine 3 Don’t smoke 3 Control cholesterol 3 Maintain a healthy weight
We are excited to welcome Mazda Biria, MD, cardiac electrophysiologist; Dianna Marak, electrophysiology nurse practitioner; and Patricia Cooper, electrophysiology nurse practitioner to our comprehensive heart rhythm program at AdventHealth Medical Group Cardiology & Cardiovascular Surgery at Shawnee Mission.

Ask the Doctor
Elizabeth Beal, MD, family medicine, on reducing stress to support your heart health What’s the connection between stress and heart disease?
Can high blood pressure be treated without medicines?
Stress increases blood pressure and stress hormones in the body. It can also lead to unhealthy habits like smoking, overeating and not exercising.
Yes! Eating a healthy diet such as the DASH diet or Mediterranean diet can help reduce blood pressure. These diets are rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy. If you are overweight losing as little as 10 pounds can help. You should also aim for 150 minutes per week of moderate intensity exercise such as brisk walking or bicycling.
What are the symptoms of high blood pressure in a woman? Most women don’t experience symptoms until it’s too late and high blood pressure has led to other complications. Others may notice fatigue, headaches, dizziness, chest pain or shortness of breath. Seeing your doctor for routine health checks can help identify high blood pressure before it causes problems.
What is a good blood pressure? A normal blood pressure is 120/80 or less. People with readings of 130/80 or higher, on at least two occasions, are considered to have high blood pressure.

AdventHealth | Winter 2020
What are some ways to lower stress? What about work stress? You can help reduce stress by participating in activities such as meditation, journaling, exercising and spending time with loved ones. You can help to decrease work stress by staying organized, understanding expectations, avoiding conflict and maintaining a comfortable work environment. If you
are having trouble managing stress on your own, you may try taking a stress management class or seeing a therapist.
It’s easy to tell someone to relax. But what are some effective relaxation techniques? The easiest most effective way to help relax quickly is to take a few minutes to do some deep breathing exercises. Beginners may inhale through the nose for a count of four, then exhale for a count of four. Over time this can be extended to a count of eight in and eight out, ideally 10 to 15 minutes daily.

The Facts
Take This Advice WITHOUT a Grain of Salt You may have been told by your health care provider to reduce the salt in your diet. Here’s why. Sodium is essential for life. And it makes a lot of the foods we love taste even better. But like everything else, too much of a good thing can have consequences. In some people, extra sodium can lead to or raise high blood pressure. And people with high blood pressure are more likely to develop heart disease or have a stroke. How to Keep Salt in Check The American Heart Association recommends no more than 2,300 milligrams (mgs) a day – and an ideal maximum of 1,500 mgs per day – for most adults, especially those with high blood pressure. Here are two tips to avoid salt overload:
Watch out for the Salty Six 1 Bread and Rolls One slice can have up to 230 mg of sodium. 2 Cold Cuts and Cured Meats Deli or pre-packaged turkey can have more than 1,000 mg of sodium. 3 Pizza One slice can equal 760 mg of sodium. 4 Poultry Just three ounces of frozen and breaded chicken nuggets contain about 600 mg of sodium. 5 Soup One cup of canned chicken soup can have up to 940 mg of sodium.
3 Nutrition information like sodium content is based only one serving, so adjust accordingly. 3 Look for heart-healthy foods approved by the AHA labeled with a red heart and white checkmark.
