This Low-Carb Favorite Will Earn High Praise These easy-to-make bell pepper poppers are packed with flavor and make the perfect snack or appetizer for any gathering. Turkey bacon and cheese is always a winning combination, and it’s a great way to add in some vegetables, even with a finicky crowd. To make these bell pepper poppers ahead of time, slice the peppers to remove the seeds and ribs, then set aside. Then make the mixture, wrap it up and store it in the fridge. When it’s time to eat, just stuff the peppers and serve.

Low-Carb Bell Pepper Poppers Ingredients: 1 package mini bell peppers, cut in half and deseeded 1 8-ounce package cream cheese, room temperature 5 strips turkey bacon, cooked and chopped 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese ¹⁄₃ cup mayonnaise 2 tablespoons ranch seasoning mix Directions: 1 Place the cream cheese, turkey bacon, cheddar cheese, mayonnaise and seasoning in a large medium bowl. pepper halves. Place in the refrigerator to chill for at least 30 minutes.

Exercise & Fitness

Let’s Stop Making Excuses and Start Making Changes “Where there’s a will, there’s a way” the old saying goes. But when it comes to our physical fitness, a lot of things always seem to get in the way. No time. No equipment. No motivation. If this sounds familiar, don’t lose heart. At one time or another, even the most dedicated fitness fanatics make excuses to get out of their daily exercise routines. Here are some of the biggest barriers to working out regularly, and some of the best ways to overcome them: LACK OF TIME 3 Identify at least three 30-minute time slots during the week you could use for physical activity. 3 Choose activities you can fit into your daily routine. Walking in your neighborhood or exercising while you watch TV are good options. FEAR OF INJURY 3 Learn how to warm up and cool down to prevent injury. Exercise appropriately for your age, fitness level, skill level and health status.

BAD WEATHER 3 Develop a set of regular activities that are always available no matter what the weather is – indoor cycling, athome fitness and yoga videos, indoor swimming, strength training, stair climbing, mall walking, dancing, etc. HIGH COSTS 3 Choose activities that require minimal facilities or equipment, such as walking, jogging, jumping rope or strength training.

LACK OF MOTIVATION 3 Plan ahead to make physical activity a regular part of your daily or weekly schedule and put it in your calendar. 3 Join an in-person or virtual exercise class. LACK OF ENERGY 3 Schedule exercise for those times in the day or week when you feel energetic. Learn more about the programs we offer that are designed to strengthen you – mind, body and spirit. G

rief is a very natural reaction to loss. It’s the emotional suffering you feel when someone or something you love is taken away. This sense of loss can be overwhelming, causing all sorts of difficult and unexpected emotions – shock, anger, disbelief, guilt and intense sadness. Whatever the cause, it’s important to understand that these feelings are normal and appropriate. Just as important is finding healthy ways to cope with these feelings, so you can come to terms with your loss and eventually move on with your life.

What are the stages of grief? In 1969, psychiatrist Elisabeth Kübler-Ross introduced what became known as the “five stages of grief,” also known by the acronym DABDA.

Denial: “This can’t be happening to me.” Anger: “Why is this happening? Who is to blame?” Bargaining: “Make this not happen, and I will do something in return.” Depression: “I’m too sad to do anything.” Acceptance: “I’m at peace with what happened.” “In an ideal world, we would go through each of these stages in order. But grief tends to go back and forth. Events can bring us back and interrupt the process, with many starting and stopping points. Grief does not have an exact timeline,” said Ravi Sabapathy, PsyD, AdventHealth Shawnee Mission.

RELIEF FROM

GRIEF 6 | AdventHealth | SPRING 2021

The physical toll of grief In addition to the emotional and mental toll that grief can bring, it can cause powerful physical effects on the body, too. For example, grief increases inflammation, which can worsen health problems you already have and cause new ones. It batters the immune system, leaving you depleted and vulnerable to infection. The heartbreak of grief can also

increase blood pressure and the risk of blood clots. “Intense grief can alter the heart muscle so much that it may cause ‘broken heart syndrome,’ temporarily disrupting your heart’s normal pumping function,” said Sabapathy.

COVID and grief Just as going to the airport is forever different from how it was before 9/11, COVID has

changed the world — even if the change is just temporary. We’ve lost a sense of what’s normal. We fear economic damage. We miss our connections with family, friends, co-workers, neighbors and everyone else. It’s a collective grief. But it’s very real. “Because of COVID, grief has been in our brains for so long that it has become part of everyday life. What’s important now is to not cope in unhealthy ways by turning to alcohol or drugs, overmedicating or isolating,” said Sabapathy.

“For many of us, there’s the fear that we could have done something to prevent the loss – believing that if we knew something unfortunate was going to happen tomorrow, we’d have acted differently. If only we had done this or changed that. But the truth is, these feelings are simply part of the grieving process.” – Ravi Sabapathy Some of us who have lost a loved one during the pandemic may feel we’ve been deprived of the ability to really grieve, as though the loss didn't really happen. Although we may not be able to grieve in ways that we are used to, it can be beneficial to figure out a way to connect with others during this time. “It’s important to remember

someone’s entire life, not just their last days. We try to honor who we’ve lost, not just to remember them when they passed, but to remember their positive and goodness,” said Sabapathy.

Coping with grief There is no right or wrong way to grieve, but there are healthy ways to deal with the grieving process. Emotional and physical self-care are essential to ease complications of grief and boost recovery. Exercising, spending time in nature, getting enough sleep, and talking to loved ones can help with physical and mental health.

If you or a loved one is having a hard time coping with a grief event, seek treatment from a health professional or mental health provider. One local online resource is griefsupportnetwork.org, which is dedicated to creating caring communities of support for the bereaved through outreach, education, and advocacy.

Fighting a Medical Double Whammy: Heart Disease and Colon Cancer

F

or year after year, heart disease and cancer have had something troubling in common. They continue to be the two leading causes of death in the U.S. – by a lot. In fact, each of them is greater than the next three leading causes combined. But now there’s an added concern. Heart attack survivors may have an increased risk of developing cancer compared to people without cardiovascular disease. And that’s not all. “There is significant data that indicates that a diagnosis of colorectal cancer leads to an increase in the risk of developing both coronary atherosclerosis and congestive heart failure,” said Andrew Waters, MD, FACC, RPVI, Cardiologist, AdventHealth Medical Group Cardiology & Cardiovascular Surgery at Shawnee Mission. At the heart of it all – no pun intended – is a group of risk

From Andrew Waters, MD, FACC, RPVI, Cardiologist, Cardiology & Cardiovascular Surgery Andrew Waters, MD, FACC, RPVI, is a Boardcertified non-invasive cardiologist who also specializes in heart failure. He earned his medical degree from Saba University School of Medicine in the Caribbean Netherlands. He went on to complete a residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in cardiovascular disease at the University of Kansas Medical Center. In addition to Board certifications in cardiovascular disease and internal medicine, Dr. Waters also holds specialized certifications in echocardiography, nuclear cardiology, cardiac CT and peripheral vascular disease. Additionally, he is a Registered Physician in Vascular Interpretation (RPVI), signifying that he meets the highest standard in vascular ultrasound interpretation.

factors that increases the risk of heart disease and diabetes. This group is known as ‘metabolic syndrome,’ and it includes high blood pressure, high blood sugar, high triglycerides, low HDL cholesterol and belly fat. When you have at least three of these risk factors, your chances for heart disease, diabetes, and stroke are higher than they’d be with any of those health problems on their own. “Metabolic syndrome is associated with several adverse health outcomes and this includes cardiovascular disease as well as a number of different types of cancer,” said Waters.

How does colon cancer affect the heart? Patients with colorectal cancer have a significantly greater risk than the general population for developing cardiovascular disease and congestive heart failure. And in some cases, one of the medications used to treat many colorectal patients can promote the buildup of coronary atherosclerosis, better known as hardening of the arteries. “Although studies have demonstrated that the greatest increase in cardiovascular

mortality occurs in the first two years after diagnosis of colorectal cancer, there is a prolonged increase in risk that persists for up to a decade afterwards,” said Waters.

Fortunately, there’s a way to fight back. By reducing the risk factors of metabolic syndrome, both heart disease and colon cancer can be prevented before they become life-threatening. “From a preventative standpoint, it makes sense to focus on the people who are likely to develop metabolic syndrome. People with central obesity, hypertension, a family or personal history of diabetes mellitus, a sedentary lifestyle or a past medical history of polycystic ovarian syndrome are likely to develop metabolic syndrome. These are common conditions that can be evaluated and diagnosed by a primary care physician as part of routine checkups,” said Waters. In fact, the American Heart Association has developed a regimen called ‘Life’s Simple Seven’ to combat metabolic syndrome. It recommends eating a healthy diet (more fruits and vegetables, whole

syndrome, your doctor may also suggest medicine. It won’t replace lifestyle changes, but it can help. For example, you may get a drug called a statin to lower your cholesterol. Other medicines may lower your blood pressure, prevent blood clots, fight coronary disease and lower your chances of having a heart attack.

Ask-A-Doctor

Jeff Mincher, MD,

Family Medicine, on Well Visits for Men Over 40

What are the most important reasons for 40+ men to have wellness visits even if they’re feeling healthy? You may have undiagnosed medical conditions like high blood pressure or cholesterol, which don't always cause symptoms when they first start, but can eventually cause big problems if left unchecked (heart attack, stroke, etc.). It‘s also a good opportunity to check-in with your doctor and consider long-term health goals. For example, maybe you hope to lead an active lifestyle in retirement with lots of hiking, camping and fishing (like me). It's like planning for retirement, but investing in your body, instead of the stock market. If you are in need of a primary care doctor, visit MyHealthKC.com to connect with a provider in the AdventHealth network. 10 | AdventHealth | SPRING 2021

Which health screenings are the most important for this age group? It‘s important for the doctor to be able to identify any abnormalities that may not necessarily be causing symptoms. This includes checking vital signs like blood pressure and body mass index. For men in their 40s, we also start talking about prostate and colon cancer screening. This also depends on your family history and any symptoms. And we typically do blood and urine tests to look at cholesterol and screen for infectious diseases.

How important is it for this group to have a good relationship with their health care provider? It’s very important for people of ALL ages to have a good relationship with their health care provider, especially their primary care provider. I think our role in a patient's health care includes being an advocate, teacher, coach, cheerleader and a partner, so that we can help them live their best life!

How often should a male over the age of 40 get a physical? Once a year. I suggest scheduling it just after your birthday, so you always know when you’re due next!
