s a faith-based organization, our mission of Improving Health Through Christian Service isn’t just something we talk about. It influences everything we do and propels us forward each day.

At Adventist Health System’s annual Conference on Mission in February, Shawnee Mission Health (SMH) was pleased to be recognized in two ways at a special service honoring individuals and programs that influenced mission.

First, Charlie Murray, Director of Environmental Services and Security, was honored with the Christian Service Award. Charlie, who started at Shawnee Mission Medical Center in 1980, is the true picture of a servant leader. He works quietly among us and is compassionate toward others. His untiring service and willingness to go above and beyond models our mission of Christian service.

The second way we were represented this year was through our physician well-being program. The role of a physician is very stressful, and in fact is the occupation with the highest rate of suicide. SMH identified this as a concern several years ago and formed a physician well-being committee, which is led by Gordon Kelly, MD. The work of that committee has evolved and now oversees an important resource for our doctors.

In collaboration with our Medical Staff, SMH also works with psychologist Ravi Sabapathy, PsyD, to provide confidential counseling services for physicians. His work, along with the work of our entire physician well-being committee, is making a difference for our Medical Staff. We know that when doctors are happier and healthier they are more in tune with patients and are better able to address your needs.

BARIATRIC SURGERY PROGR AM RECOGNIZED for COMMITMENT to EXCELLENCE Many individuals believe their chances of ever leading a healthier, more active lifestyle are gone when diet and exercise programs haven't been successful in helping them achieve weight loss.

However, the Shawnee Mission Health (SMH) Bariatric Surgery Program assists patients who are 100 pounds or more overweight in losing those dangerous — and sometimes life-threatening — extra pounds.

SMH’s dedicated team of bariatric surgery professionals, including surgeons Stan Hoehn, MD; Brice Hamilton, MD; and Robert Aragon, MD, work to ensure patients receive the most comprehensive, compassionate care possible.

In 2014, the Bariatric Surgery Program performed 1,146 bariatric procedures, the most in program history and significantly more than any other bariatric program in Kansas City. Our surgeons have advanced laparoscopic skills that allow them to complete a sleeve or bypass procedure in half the time of other bariatric centers. Research shows that the less time a patient is in surgery and under anesthesia, the better the outcomes. This allows patients to have shorter lengths of stay and recover more quickly with outcomes that meet or exceed benchmarks.

In addition to being an accredited Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP), the Bariatric Surgery program has also received the following recent quality recognitions:

»»Aetna has awarded SMH – Prairie Star the designation as an Institute of Quality Bariatric Surgery Facility. Hospitals receiving this designation must meet specific criteria for clinical performance and overall value of the facility. »»Blue Cross Blue Shield Association designated SMH – Prairie Star as a Blue Distinction Center (BDC+) for Bariatric Surgery. »»Optum (United Health Care) has designated SMH – Prairie Star as an Optum Center of Excellence. »»CIGNA has awarded SMH – Prairie Star designation as a CIGNA 3 Star Quality Bariatric Center.

IS MOTHERHOOD not QUITE what you EXPECTED? E MOTIO NAL CHAN GE S AF T ER HAVIN G A BABY aving a baby is one of the most exciting and overwhelming events you may ever experience. But far too often, the overwhelming part of the event can also cause depression, anxiety and other emotional disorders.

That’s why the Postpartum Emotional Support Program at Shawnee Mission Health (SMH) has become such a vital resource for area moms.

“After I had my son, the hardest thing was that everyone kept telling me I should love the entire experience of being a mom,” said area resident Kacie Deimeke. “As a first-time mom, there were so many moments I did enjoy; however, being sleep-deprived and with a crying baby, I didn't enjoy every experience. I felt badly because I was supposed to love every single moment that happened with him.”

To help new moms deal with emotional changes after giving birth, SMH applied for, and received, a CREATION Health grant through Adventist Health System to launch the Postpartum Emotional Support Program.

SMH is committed to improving the well-being of the community, including the emotional health of new moms. We utilize the eight principles of CREATION Health – Choice, Rest, Environment, Activity, Trust, Interpersonal Relationships, Outlook, and Nutrition – to fulfill God’s original plan for our lives, which is to live and be happy.

In just two years, the Support Program has already become a vital resource for area moms.

“You would be surprised by the number of women affected by postpartum emotional disorders,” said Tricia Walania, SMH Program Coordinator. “It’s actually about 20 percent, which translates to nearly 1,000 new moms each year at the Shawnee Mission Birth Center alone.”

“Another factor,” said Walania, “is that many of our families are transplants. They moved here from some other region, without family or friends to support them through this experience. As a result, they can feel very isolated and vulnerable.”

Center, all new moms complete a Postpartum Depression Risk Assessment. This simple, short questionnaire helps mothers assess their feelings after childbirth, while helping the Birth Center staff ensure individuals at high risk receive the education, resources and care they need before they leave the hospital.

“Before we could launch the program, everyone in the Birth Center had to be specially trained in emotional disorders,” said Walania. “Now, our nurses know how to recognize when a patient is having postpartum emotional problems, and how to start the conversation with moms by letting them know thousands of others have already been through this.”

“It was my husband who remembered learning about the program before we left the Birth Center, and he insisted that I start going to the support group,” said Deimeke. “I remember that driving to the classes with my son was a whole anxiety by itself because I

didn’t want my baby son screaming the whole drive here.”

The Postpartum Emotional Support Group — the only hospital-based support group in the Kansas City metro area — meets weekly, and is led by a licensed Social Worker.

“Each week, there’s a different topic, but overall, the group is structured to give moms the information they need, so they can understand the emotional changes involved with all postpartum mood disorders,” said Walania. “They quickly learn that their problems are not unique, and there are tools available to help them feel better.”

“I was lucky enough to connect with another mom at the support group,” said Deimeke. “We were having similar problems, and it really helped to have someone to talk to about things I was doing, and things I should consider trying.”

SMH is here to ease the transition into motherhood and has helped hundreds of moms support one another through their battles with perinatal mood and anxiety disorders.

If you notice that you are feeling worse as time goes on, it is important that you let someone know. Do not let feelings of guilt, shame or embarrassment get in the way of doing what you need to do to feel better.

STRONGER With the addition in February of Lowell Byers, MD; Michelle Dudzinski, MD; and Brenda Shoup, MD, Shawnee Mission Health’s long tradition of providing specialized care for women has taken another major step forward.

“We couldn’t be more pleased to welcome these experts in gynecologic oncology to our growing Shawnee Mission Cancer Center,” said Becca Bell, Executive Director of Oncology Services at Shawnee Mission Health. “Not only do they offer unsurpassed care, but they also support the whole-person environment the Cancer Center is known for.”

Gynecologic oncologists specialize in cancers of the female reproductive system, such as

ovarian cancer, uterine cancer and cancer of the cervix. These Boardcertified doctors and surgeons are also specially trained to perform radical surgeries for gynecologic cancers as well as the newest minimally invasive procedures with the da Vinci® surgical robot, which allows for smaller incisions and less tissue damage than traditional surgery.

For Michelle Dudzinski, MD, coming to the Shawnee Mission Cancer Center was an easy decision.

“I’ve devoted my career to taking care of women, so I was looking for a place that was genuinely patientfocused,” said Dudzinski. “Not only does Shawnee Mission Health have a long-standing commitment to women’s health, it also has the largest obstetrics program in the area that delivers nearly 5,000 babies each year.”

“Although most people are not familiar with our specialty,” said Byers, “the fact is, patients cared for by gynecologic oncologists have

Patients are referred from primary care physicians, OB/Gyns, urologists, medical oncologists and dermatologists.

“We have great relationships throughout the medical community, so the referral process is very smooth,” said Dudzinski.

Of course, the Shawnee Mission Cancer Center recognizes time is a major factor in patient care.

“We offer a rapid turnaround when it comes to getting patients into our offices so that our specialists can determine the course of treatment and start a customized treatment plan,” said Bell.

“New patients can be seen within a week,” said Byers. “If they have had a prior biopsy or surgery, we try to get the pathology reviewed before they see us so they can avoid having to make additional visits.”

In order to determine the most appropriate and effective treatment plans, the Shawnee Mission Cancer Center advocates a partnership approach between the patient and health care team to evaluate the various treatment options collectively.

“We have a multi-disciplinary conference every Monday afternoon where we discuss every single patient,” said Dudzinski. “At that time, we develop the treatment plan for each patient.”

This collective team includes all

three gynecologic oncologists, Nurse Practitioner Niki Switzer, APRN, along with specialists in medical oncology, radiation oncology and infusion therapy.

“It’s great for Niki Switzer, APRN patients that the Cancer Center offers every cancer-related service in one place, under one roof,” said Byers. “It’s simple, efficient and most of all, it’s convenient for our patients.”

Throughout each patient’s treatment, the Cancer Center provides integrative oncology services, like nutrition therapy, naturopathic medicine, pain management, counseling and physical therapy, to help reduce treatmentrelated side effects, and improve quality of life.

Nagendra Natarajan, MD, MPH, is Board-certified in Medical Oncology, Hematology Nagendra and Internal Natarajan, MD, MPH Medicine, and provides comprehensive consultations for patients with cancer and benign blood disorders.

He has special interest in hereditary basis of cancer, gastrointestinal cancers and early stage breast cancer. Ragan VanLeeuwen, MSN, APRN, AGCNS-BC, is an Advanced Practice Ragan VanLeeuwen, Registered MSN, APRN, AGCNS-BC Nurse, Clinical Nurse Specialist in Hematology/Oncology. Unruh is one of four hand specialist surgeons on staff.

SICK? Although one of the best ways to maintain good health throughout life is regular check-ups with your primary care doctor, accidents and illnesses sometimes occur when your doctor isn’t available.

If you’re like many people, you may wonder when you should see your primary care doctor, when you need to go to urgent care or when visiting an emergency room is best. Consider the following guidelines: • A primary care provider is your starting point for nonemergency medical concerns. For example, if you are experiencing flu symptoms, need a vaccination before going on vacation or are interested in learning more about preventive medicine, a doctor is your best bet.

• Urgent care can address non-emergency medical concerns, such as respiratory infections, sprained ankles and skin irritations, and is often available when most physician offices are closed.

• A visit to the emergency room is necessary if you begin experiencing symptoms that require immediate attention. For example, crushing chest pain, head trauma or difficulty breathing require immediate care.
