Why strength training for women is building a strong following.

Walking or running on the treadmill regularly is definitely a good thing. But it shouldn’t be the only thing. Incorporating just two 30-minute strength training sessions into your weekly workout routine can make a big, healthy difference in your life. In addition to helping you get stronger and leaner, strength training challenges your heart, helps you maintain lean muscle mass, improves bone density, and improves your metabolism, so you burn more calories.

To help you get started, Kari McKeown, physical therapist with Shawnee Mission Health, has developed these four guidelines for strength training beginners:

Target your large muscle groups.

Focus your efforts on three main areas: your core, upper body, and lower body rather than individual muscles or “problem” areas.

Lift enough weight. To get the best results, you need to lift enough to work your muscles. To find your limit, test different weights. You should be able to do three sets of 10-15 reps, with the last 2-3 reps of each set feeling pretty difficult.

Use proper form. Don’t let your form slip as your muscles fatigue. It could result in injury. If possible, do your workout in front of a mirror so you can monitor your form.

Improve your diet. A lot of people exercise regularly, but eat terribly.

Focus on eating lean proteins, whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables.

Mint Chocolate Watermelon Sundae The dog days of August are over, but the sweet taste of watermelon remains. Michael Werner, managing partner of The Jacobson, shares a delicious way for you to make the most of the last crop of local watermelons before the season is over: This simple concoction combines some of my favorite ingredients into a surprising fresh ode to summer.

To me, few things say more than vine-ripe watermelon.

This recipe can easily be adapted to ingredients you may already have in your refrigerator or pantry. For me, it's all about fresh, seasonal ingredients.

Ingredients: ½ Vine ripe watermelon - seedless ½ Cup raw unfiltered honey 1 Cup pistachio kernels 1 Bunch fresh mint leaves, de-stemmed 4 Ounces premium quality dark chocolate 8 Ounces fresh cream 2 Tablespoons powdered sugar Directions: 1. Start with a nice ripe watermelon, (any summer melon will do). If you don't have a melon some nice plump berries work great, too. Using a small melon-baller scoop out the melon.

2. Lay in a single layer of melon balls on sheet tray and move to freezer.

3. Whip 1 cup heavy cream with two tablespoons of powdered sugar (optional: add a touch of vanilla) until it peaks. Refrigerate until ready to plate.

5. Combine pistachio kernels and honey (2 parts pistachio – 1 part honey) and set aside.

5. Thinly slice ¾ of the fresh mint leaves and set aside. Reserve ¼ of leaves for garnish.

6. Shave or finely grate dark chocolate and set aside.

7. Prior to serving, mix frozen melon and fresh mint.

8. To serve, use chilled serving bowls or glassware and drizzle pistachio and honey mixture on serving bowl or glassware.

9. Spoon frozen melon into dishes.

10. Top each with fresh cream and garnish with shaved chocolate and whole mint leaves.

Shawnee Mission Health has partnered with Johnson County Mental Health to offer this interactive Mental Health First Aid course, which gives people the skills to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis.

The evidence behind the program demonstrates that it builds mental health literacy and helps the public identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illness. Participants are introduced to risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems, gain an understanding of their impact, and explore common interventions and treatments.

your THYROID and your health ike most women, you’ve probably seen those statistics about the gender gap in the workplace, in the boardroom, in politics, and elsewhere.

But, unfortunately, there’s one place where women are definitely outpacing men – thyroid problems. The fact is, women are eight times more likely to have thyroid problems than men. And that’s worth knowing about.

“Thyroid hormone is involved in the function of every organ system in the body,” said Nichole Smith, MD, endocrinologist with Shawnee Mission Endocrinology & Diabetes. “So when the thyroid is malfunctioning, a patient can experience a multitude of symptoms.”

produce too much thyroid hormone (hyperthyroidism) or too little thyroid hormone (hypothyroidism).

“I think the reason women have so many more thyroid problems is women are more susceptible to autoimmune diseases,” said Smith.

Hypothyroidism is most commonly caused by an autoimmune disease called Hashimotos, and one of the causes of hyperthyroidism is also an autoimmune disease called Graves.

One of the challenges in thyroid diagnosis is the symptoms of hyperthyroid and hypothyroid conditions can overlap. “That is why the cornerstone of diagnosis in my opinion is lab work.” said Smith, “instead of being based solely on symptoms.”

A thyroid problem can affect women differently during different phases of life.

Adolescents experience many of the same thyroid disease symptoms as adults, along with unique symptoms including a decline in height velocity, a delay in puberty and a decline in school performance.

For hyperthyroidism, there are medications preferred in the first trimester of pregnancy.

HELP KIDS DEAL WITH CHANGE ore than 2,500 years ago – long before Netflix® and Spotify® and Amazon™ – the Greek philosopher, Heraclitus, said: “Change is the only constant in life.”

But what Heraclitus didn’t mention was that change can be a very big challenge, especially for kids.

“Children thrive on structure.

When their lives change, they have to learn to adapt to a new routine,” said Jill Riffel, MD, pediatrician with Shawnee Mission Health (SMH). “Dealing with change is a life skill all children need to learn to ensure they have healthy coping skills as they grow and mature through childhood and into adulthood.”

Helping a child learn to accept and adapt to change is one of the most important responsibilities a parent will ever have.

Routine provides a sense of security for a child.

But what happens when that routine is disrupted?

Fall is a perfect example of life’s changes. Besides the dramatic change of seasons, fall can mean a new school, new teachers, a new soccer coach – and new fears.

The good news is that coping with change is a skill that can be taught and improved.

“Although change is stressful, it can be a growth opportunity,” said Riffel. “But it’s important for parents to understand that children will grow at their own pace. At first, they may feel fear, anger, sadness and a sense of loss, but eventually, they will accept and hopefully embrace the change.”

There are many ways parents can help their kids cope with change.

It starts with creating an environment in which they feel safe asking you about anything they’re facing. Asking questions helps kids process change. And the answers they receive from you will help them transition.

“An honest and open approach to answering the child's questions is best,” said Riffel, “along with focusing on the positive aspects of change.”

Parents also need to recognize when their children are having difficulty coping with change.

“Children may show signs of

irritability, sleeping difficulties, a change in appetite, social withdrawal, acting out and school regression,” said Riffel. “Parents should address their concern with the child and attempt to assist them.

If concerns persist, parents should consider contacting their child’s physician or school counselor.”

A “heads up” can be a big help, too.

Just like adults, no child will cope as well with change that’s sprung on them without any warning. If you can, start preparing them for the changes early, so they can get their head around it.

“Change that is expected is much easier for a child to process than the unpredictable,” said Riffel.

“Unpredictable change is a fear of the unknown for a child, making them feel very vulnerable.”

Besides letting them know ahead of time that changes are on the way, try to keep family routines in place – like bedtime rituals, Sunday night dinners, the books you read, or even the TV shows you all watch.

“Children need time to process information and prefer daily routine or they can become stressed,” said Riffel. “They like knowing the schedule for the day and thrive on predictability.”

BUILD COPING SKILLS

BY ENCOURAGING YOUR CHILD TO TRY NEW THINGS. As adults, we know how important it is to step outside our comfort zones – pushing ourselves just a little bit is how we learn and grow and become more well-rounded.

So how can we teach this to our kids?

Self-confidence is the first step in being willing to try anything different. Teach them how to choose their own clothes, get themselves dressed, make their own snacks and simple meals, fix things and clean things. kkBuild children’s sense of security. Make time for your children and pay attention during those times. Listen to what they have to say. Make sure to communicate to children that they are more important than anything else in the world. kkHelp kids learn that mistakes are okay. Look for ways to work with your child to find a solution. This teaches children that mistakes are a part of life and they’re not anything to be afraid of. kkTry new things together with your child. Go somewhere you’ve never been, or do something you’ve never done before – together. kk

on what you should know about whooping cough.

What exactly is whooping cough? What are the most common symptoms?

Whooping cough, otherwise known as pertussis, is a highly contagious respiratory disease caused by the bacterium Bordetella pertussis. It can affect patients of all ages; however, it can be very serious and even deadly in babies under a year old. Babies affected by pertussis may have a very minimal or even absent cough, and instead can present with apneic episodes or pauses in their breathing. Since the early stages of whooping cough mimic the symptoms of a common cold, they are often not suspected or diagnosed until later when more severe symptoms appear.

After the initial one to two weeks of cold-like symptoms, the illness progresses to the second stage where the more characteristic symptoms include “paroxysms” or fits of coughing, followed by the classic high-pitched “whoop” from which the disease gets its name.

How long does it usually take to recover from whooping cough?

If whooping cough is treated within the first three weeks of symptoms, symptom duration and severity may be decreased. However, even with antibiotic treatment, coughing fits can last up to 10 weeks or more.

Is whooping cough more dangerous for kids than for adults? Definitely. Babies less than a year old are at greatest risk for getting whooping cough as well as developing serious complications from it.

We use two strategies to help protect babies.

First, we vaccinate pregnant women with Tdap in their third trimester of each pregnancy, so they may transfer these antibodies to their babies, and protect the mothers themselves from possibly transferring pertussis to the newborn. We also recommend that everyone around the baby is up-to-date on their ageappropriate DTaP or Tdap. This includes parents, siblings, grandparents, babysitters, etc.

When should a doctor be contacted about potential whooping cough symptoms?

Patients should see their health care provider immediately if they’ve had known exposure to whooping cough. Also, babies and children should always be seen ASAP if pauses in breathing occur.

Should everyone be vaccinated against whooping cough?

Yes, unless there are serious contraindications, everyone should be vaccinated with the age-appropriate pertussis vaccine.

The Center for Disease Control (CDC), recommends that infants and children get the DTaP vaccine at two, four and six months and between 15-18 months of age. A fifth booster of DTaP is given at four-six years of age.

Because the protection of the vaccine fades over time, we recommend a booster dose of Tdap for adolescents, at age 11 or 12.

We also vaccinate women during each pregnancy, ideally in the third trimester.

Remember, the best way to protect against whooping cough is by getting vaccinated.

BREASTFEEDING: RETURNING TO WORK AND PUMPING This class covers from the time babies are about three weeks old on and answers questions such as how to bottle feed a breastfed baby, what type of pump works best for you, pump care and breast milk storage. Partners are encouraged to attend.

Cost: $20 CHILDBIRTH – ONE DAY Perfect for those unable to attend the five-week series. A certified childbirth instructor will provide information on the stages of labor, comfort measures and positions, what to expect at the hospital, medications, Shawnee Mission Birth Center tour and much more.

Cost: $75 CHILDBIRTH – FIVE WEEK Our five-week comprehensive childbirth class series covers stages of labor, comfort measures and birthing positions, what to expect at the hospital, medications and much more. Partners will have an opportunity to experience pregnancy by wearing the Empathy Belly. Includes Newborn Care class and a tour of the Shawnee Mission Birth Center.

Cost: $65 CHILDBIRTH PREPARATION ONLINE This method of preparing for childbirth might be a good fit if you prefer to learn at your own pace, have been placed on

bed rest, or if your work/travel schedules prevent you from committing to a traditional class.

Access to a certified childbirth instructor is available through email and phone.

Cost: $80 CHILDBIRTH: NATURAL STRATEGIES Our one-time class is a perfect addition to Childbirth one-day or five-week classes. A certified instructor provides an opportunity for you to create your birth vision by clarifying values, writing a birth plan and practicing additional relaxation and comfort measures. Participants need to complete a childbirth preparation class prior to attendance.

Cost: $30 CHILDBIRTH REFRESHER AND VBAC A refresher class for parents to focus on this pregnancy while reflecting on the last. A certified childbirth instructor will review stages of labor, what to expect at the hospital, positions and comfort measures, medications and more.

Also includes topics specific to anyone interested in having a VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean) with your upcoming birth.

Cost: $30 GRANDPARENTS CLASS First-time and experienced grandparents will learn how to support their son or daughter and spouse’s new role as parents, plus current safety issues.

KIDS AND K9S You made it through the pregnancy and infancy but now the family dog is having to deal with a child who is mobile! This class will give you the tools to institute rules, routines and management practices that will keep both the children and the family dog happy, healthy and safe.

Cost: $35 NEWBORN CARE Learn what to expect at the hospital, the importance of newborn tests and procedures, baby basics such as bathing, diapering, cord care, safe sleep, calming techniques, Happiest Baby on the Block and much more.

Included in the Childbirth five-week class, and complimentary with the one-day childbirth class.

Cost: $30 NEWBORN CARE ONLINE This self-paced course is a mix of self-study, reading and video clips via access to an interactive online class website. Access to a certified childbirth educator is available through email and phone as you work through the class.

Specialty Classes BREAK THROUGH YOUR CLUTTER IN FIVE STEPS Join Nikki Crawford, of Your Peaceful Space, for where you will get clear about your barriers to living clutter-free; dig into the health impacts of living in clutter; create a helpful mindset to break through your clutter; and commit to the next, easy steps to start dealing with clutter.

Cost: Free FERMENTATION 101: CULTURED VEGGIES Learn the how's and why's of fermented foods. We will slice, salt and spice up some carrot sticks to create an amazingly delicious and nutritious jar of fermented garlic dilly carrot sticks chalk full of probiotics.

Cost: $25 DIABETES EDUCATION CLASSES Learn how to improve your blood sugar control and increase your self-confidence to manage diabetes.
