Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

Welcome... To The Home of Football

ww.sheffieldfc.com

Hello and welcome to Dronfield for today’s Evo-Stik East game between Sheffield FC and Gresley.

We hope our guests enjoy their stay at The Home of Football Stadium, and that they have a pleasant and safe journey back after the game. The last two games have seen us put on some great shows, but once again it is the sloppy defensive mistakes, and it is a problem we still need to iron out as soon possible. Against Marske we outplayed them for the majority of the ninety, and remember this was the same team that gave us a beating on the opening day and are top of the table. It was a shame that we let all three points slip with two late goals, as we more than deserved a win.

Fortunately we didn’t do the same at Cleethorpes on Tuesday; although the start we made to the second half was as chaotic as I’ve ever experienced. Once again we showed the necessary class at the other end, and we now are the league’s top scorers… sadly we have the worst defensive record too! I’m sure all the neutrals who have been watching will have loved these games! Enjoy the entertainment Gav

Gresley Rovers were formed in 1882, playing friendly games before joining the Burton Junior League in 1892, where they won the title in 1895. Towards the end of the 19th century they joined the Leicestershire Senior League, finishing as runners-up in 1899 and taking the title 2 years later, before joining the Midland League in 1903. They moved to their current home, the Moat Ground, in the first decade of the 1900s and played in a variety of leagues around the Midlands area, winning the Leicestershire Senior League in 1947 & 1948. From 1961 to 1975 they played in the Central Alliance, winning 4 titles and a cup whilst finishing no lower than 5th place before joining the West Midlands League. After initial struggle they became one of the leading sides, winning the title in 1991 & 1992, going on to join the Southern League and being promoted to the Premier Division at the first attempt. During this time they had also won the Derbyshire Senior Cup 4 times, a feat repeated 4 times since, and reached the latter stages of the FA Vase twice, losing the 1991 final to Guiseley after a replay.

In S18 Today...

Gresley FC

In 1997 they were crowned Southern League champions, just a season on from reaching the Quarter Finals of the FA Trophy, and were denied promotion to the Conference only due to ground grading issues. The disappointment of this decision seemed to affect the side who were relegated 2 years later, after a good first half of the season which saw them reach the first round proper of the FA Cup for the second time in just 5 seasons. Rovers then remained at the same level of the pyramid, moving into the NPL in 2004, before liquidation due to financial problems in 2009. Reformed as Gresley FC they picked up two league titles whilst progressing through the East Midlands Counties and Midland Alliance leagues in just 3 years to lift themselves back to the NPL. They adjusted quickly to the step up and finished just inside the top half of the table, in 11th place, in their first campaign back in 2012/13 and rising to 9th the following season. The following year they ended in 5th, before narrowly losing 0-1 at Leek in the Playoff Semi Final, but have struggled in the last 3 seasons, ending in 16th and then 17th. This season has seen a mixed start, beginning with a slow opening where they lost 2 -0 at Brighouse, had to come from behind to draw at home to Stocksbridge and then exited the FA Cup away to Sutton Coldfield. August did end well as the side recovered from being 2 down at half-time away to Belper to level through Martin Smyth and Kieran O’Connell before stealing all the league points thanks to a Dexter Morris-Clarke winner in the 90th minute. They followed up with a win at home to Tadcaster, Smyth scoring with two penalties, before losing at home to Carlton Town, by a single goal, last Saturday. On Tuesday evening they conceded two early goals at AFC Mansfield before battling back, but eventually going down by a 2 -1 score. That loss leaves them 10th in the division, above Club on goal difference with today ’s game representing a real chance for either side to push on into the top half of the table.

Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

ww.sheffieldfc.com

The first game between the clubs didn’t take place until 2007/08, in the League Cup, when the Coach & Horses played host to an amazing tie. The first half opened well for Sheffield, but it was David Blenkinsopp who gave the visitors the lead just past the 10-minute mark. Rob Ward headed Club back level shortly after but Mawbey gave Gresley the lead again. Things calmed down for a period and just before half-time a second for Ward looked to have sent the hosts in level but Mawbey again put Gresley ahead as the players headed for a well -earned breather. Ridgeway extended the visitors’ lead just past the hour mark and Stuart Copnell pulled one back before a stunning end to normal time: Gavin Smith appeared to have forced extra time when he netted on 87 minutes, Blenkinsopp appeared to have won it for Gresley when he scored to put his side 5-4 ahead but Chris Dolby levelled once more with a volley deep in injury time! In extra time Club took the lead for the first time when Daz Winter converted a Dolby cross and Sheffield progressed, to make their way through two further rounds before losing at Gateshead in January.

History Corner With Andy Dixon

The league games were boring by comparison with Club winning both. Gavin Smith, Pete Davey and Vill Powell wrapped up a 3-0 win away in February. As Sheffield pushed for a play-off place in April Chris Dolby and Jamie Smith scored the goals while keeper Danny Haystead produced a man of the match show to hold out the visitors in a 2-0 win at the Coach & Horses. The goals were flying in again in 2008/09 with both sides enjoying their away day. The season opened with a trip to Gresley and Sheffield made a great start by storming out as 5-2 winners, strike partners Scott Partridge and Vill Powell both scoring twice and Asa Ingall securing the win, despite a late double from Blenkinsopp. Gresley gained some revenge in early November as forward Louis Briscoe helped himself to a hat -trick before the half-hour mark. Pete Davey had scored in between but Blenkinsopp scored 10 minutes into the second half to put the result beyond doubt. After a small break in fixtures we once again travelled to the Moat Ground in September 2012. Within the first 5 minutes Chris Adam sprang the offside trap and lobbed Sheffield ahead although strikes from Phil Massingham and a cracker from Marc Goodfellow gave the home side the lead at the break. The second 45 saw Sheffield the better side and they were rewarded by an Aaron Martin equaliser and a cool finish from Shaq McKenzie on 77 minutes. At Dronfield, in April, Jordi Gough and Jordan Nadat scored for The Moatmen, either side of a Steve Woolley cracker, to claim a 2-1 win. The sides met three times in 2013/14 with Sheffield losing disappointingly on each occasion. Andrew Gascoigne and Zeph Thomas put Club in control in an FA Trophy meeting with early strikes but Paolo Piliero & Nadat levelled things before John Guy and Liam Guest completed the comeback win. In March the sides met twice in 11 days, Club losing the away game to a pair of second half goals after a bright start. The return saw Sheffield fall behind towards the end of the first half but an Andrew Gascoigne penalty after the hour mark, coupled with a red card for Gresley ’s Harrison, appeared to have at least ensured a share of the spoilt as the clock ticked into the final minutes. The visitors hadn’t read the script though as Eric Graves and Zibusiso Nyatitio wrapped up a late win. 2014/15 brought comfortable home wins in both games. Matt Roney, James Gregory and Joel Purkiss led a 3 -1 home win for Club before Alex Steadman, scoring a hat-trick, and Kieran O’Connell, with 2, did the damage for Gresley in their 5-2 victory in Derbyshire. The following season the sides played out a goalless encounter in Church Gresley before a fine 3-1 victory for Sheffield in the March return as a Ross Goodwin goal and a double from Brian Cusworth gave James Colliver a win in his first home game as manager. Our November 2016 trip south ended as a 1 1 draw thanks to a spectacular leveller from Lee Cooksey in injury time. In poor weather conditions the home side took the FIRST MEETING – 25/09/2007 lead in the first half but a resilient display from Club saw them NPL League Cup 1st Round earn a deserved point when skipper Cooksey lashed home from SHEFFIELD FC 6 25 yards out. The return was a cracker, with forward duo Johnson and Denton putting Club ahead, but Gresley were Rob Ward (2), Stuart Copnell, Gavin level before half time thanks to some clinical finishing. Smith, Chris Dolby, Daz Winter Sheffield were not to be denied though and a great turn and 20 Gresley Rovers 5 -yard finish from Mohammed Hamid wrapped up all 3 points. Last season was a tale of two away wins, the first a 2-0 defeat for Club here as Matt Melbourne headed home in the first period before Danny Quinn settled a scrappy affair with a second after the interval. It was another fixture low on quality but high on endeavour in the clash back in March of this year, with Waide Fairhurst eventually giving Club the lead in the final half hour with the visitors seeing the game out relatively comfortably after that.

Sheffield FC 3 Marske United 3 Evo-Stik East Division Saturday 08/09/18 Attendance: 352

Marske United moved to the top of the Evo-Stik East, writes Stuart James, as a late equaliser denied Sheffield FC all three points in another goal-fest at the Home of Football. A goal each from all three strikers for the home side looked to have sealed it for Club, as Marc Newsham opened with his fourth goal in fours game, with Leon Osborne and substitute Waide Fairhurst grabbing a third. However once again Sheffield’s leaky defence let the visitors snatch a point, with Damien Stevens, Glen Butterworth and Adam Wheatley all finding the back of the net as the hosts switched off at the back. The away side started the liveliest, however it was the hosts who had the first chance, with Leon Osborne driving just over after being set up in a central position twenty yards from goal. Club started to press with a series of Jamie Yates corners, with Andrew Gascoigne being denied by a good block by keeper Robert Dean, and the keeper spilling a free-kick from Yates to concede yet another corner. Sheffield took the lead on 17 minutes from this, after a well worked move from the corner, Jamie Yates putting the ball in with Marc Newsham (right) slamming the ball home. On 28 minutes, James Kay, Newsham and Ben Turner, with a great cross finding Leon Osborne who took a touch before driving into the net for 2-0. Just three minutes later and Marske pulled one back out of nothing, a magnificent cross from the right finding Stevens who beat Ross Durrant with a perfectly cushioned header.

It was still the home team pressing and looking the most dangerous, and after more good work from Gregory, Kay and Gascoigne, it was Osborne who squandered a chance to restore the lead. Club re-established the two-goal cushion six minutes into the second half, as more neat football from the hosts as Osborne and Charlie Wakefield interchanged to slide the ball through to substitute Waide Fairhurst who lofted the ball over Robert Dean. The Seasiders pulled it back to 3-2, as Sheffield switched off for a moment, allowing Glen Butterworth to break down the right to loft a peach of a lob over Durrant. It looked as if Marske had levelled when Curtis Round hit a vicious strike from the middle of the box, and Andrew Gascoigne cleared off the line with a

brave stop, turning the ball over the top. In the second minute of injury time it was 3-3, as Round found space on the left-hand side to square the ball, with skipper Adam Wheatley stabbing in from close range. This was a game the hosts deserved to win, however it was the defensive frailties once again that let an average looking visiting side grab three goals, and of course salvaging a point.

Cleethorpes Town 3 Sheffield FC 4 Evo-Stik East Division Tuesday 11/09/18 Attendance: 288

Sheffield FC's "goals, goals, goals" mentality continued on Tuesday evening, writes Stuart James, as they ran out 4-3 winners in an incredible see-saw game at Cleethorpes Town. The game started with a flourish with Cleethorpes pushing early on, and Sheffield looking particularly shaky st the back, as Jon Oglesby's cross took advantage of some loose defence and Ross Durrant having to block the effort from Jake Batty. As expected Club looked dangerous going forward, and they too went close early on as Charlie Wakefield was picked out by Andrew Gascoigne, with Leon Osborne scuffing his effort just wide of the mark. The game stuttered into a messy period dominated by a head-tennis battle, with neither team getting a grip of the game, however on 37 minutes the game erupted into life. The hosts were awarded a rather dubious corner, the ball was whipped in and was dispatched into the net, as Matt Bloomer bravely headed home. It took five minutes for Sheffield to get back on level terms, a Route One ball from Ben Turner had ex-Clubbie goalkeeper Dylan Parkin in a mess, with Marc Newsham capitalising on the hesitation to head over the keeper and drive the ball into the empty net. In injury time it too a dramatic swing, as yet again a long ball - this time from James Kay - picked apart the Owls' defence, with Newsham the punisher once again to send Sheffield into the break ahead. If the half ended well for the visitors, the second half could only be described as disastrous, as less than 30 seconds after the restart the visiting defence committed defensive suicide allowing Oglesby to capitalise and draw level. Less than a minute later Cleethorpes were in front, poor defence again only half cleared the ball, with Josh Batty hitting a sweet curling strike into the far corner. It was the jolt Sheffield needed, and they drew level once again on 65 minutes from a Charlie Wakefield freekick, with Julian Lawrence powering a fantastic header for his first goal in senior football. From there was only one likely winner, and after Newsham flashed one across the face of goal, substitute Mitchell Dunne went millimetres away from grabbing the lead with a placed header that struck the base of the post and bounced into the hands of Parkin. That was only a delay in the inevitable, as Gascoigne showed great vision ten minutes from time, picking out Dunne on a run on the right - and as expected - the ball ended up under Parkin and in the net to crown a fantastic game of football.

League Review With Steve Whitney

ww.sheffieldfc.com

Promoted Marske United moved to the top of the fledgling Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Division One East table on Tuesday night, whilst both Stamford AFC and Ossett United maintained their unbeaten starts, writes Steve Whitney.

However, Marske were held to a 0-0 draw at Mount Pleasant Avenue by newly-merged Ossett. Stamford were also held, 1-1 at Christchurch Meadow by Belper Town, whose Kai Hancock's 32nd minute effort looked to have won it for the Nailers until Jon Challinor popped up with the Daniels' equaliser 7 minutes from time. Tadcaster Albion produced their best performance to date in beating Yorkshire rivals and one of the promotion favourites, Frickley Athletic, 4-0 at the i2i Stadium. A Joe Lumsden hat-trick after 12, 29 and 72 minutes, sandwiched by one for Casey Stewart on 14 minutes sealed a very comfortable win for Taddy. Sheffield FC came back from behind twice to win by the odd goal in seven at win-less Cleethorpes Town. Matt Bloomer put the hosts in front after 37 minutes but a Marc Newsham brace on 43 and 45 minutes turned the game in Club's favour. Jon Oglesby immediately equalised after the break and then Josh Batty put the Seasiders in front after 48 minutes. After that burst of four goals in 11 minutes, it was the 66th minute that the visitors levelled through Julian Lawrence and then Mitch Dunne won it for Club with 9 minutes remaining. A goal from sub Ben Rhodes 7 minutes from time condemned Carlton Town to a 1-0 defeat at Bracken Moor against Stocksbridge Park Steels. There was further misery for Carlton when Riece Bertram was sent-off in added time for a second yellow card. Promoted AFC Mansfield earned a third win in five, 2-1 at home to Gresley FC. Martyn Smith gave the Bulls a great start with a goal inside 3 minutes. Brad Wells then doubled the lead in the 10th minute, and although Nick Guest reduced the arrears in the 34th minute, the Moatmen weren't able to find a leveller. Wisbech Town fought back from two-down in 16 minutes at home to Lincoln United to draw 2-2. Tom Garrick after just 7 minutes and then Matt Wilson on 16 minutes had the Whites in command. Aaron Hart pulled one back 7 minutes before the break and an Adam Millson penalty 5 minutes from time rescued a point for the Fenmen. Spalding United also drew their first game without manager Chris Rawlinson. His assistant Matt Easton took charge at Loughborough Dynamo and watched a 2-2 draw. Jordan Lemon gave the Tulips the lead 3 minutes into the second half, only for Liam Read to level within 5 minutes.

Ben Davison restored Spalding's lead in the 58th minute, but Dynamo's experienced striker Ryan Robbins pulled them back on terms on 66 minutes.

Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

Awaydays Frickley Athletic

Westfield Lane, South Elmsall, Pontefract, West Yorkshire, WF9 2EQ Telephone: 01977 642 460 nd Saturday 22 September 2018 (KO 3:00)

By Car The best way is to approach this from the M18 and A1 - taking junction 38. From the A1 turn off onto the A638, towards Wakefield. At the second roundabout turn left onto the B6474 towards South Elmsall. Turn left at the traffic lights and then turn right at the T-junction to stay on the B6474. Go over the railway line and turn right at the bottom of the road and then immediately left up Westfield Lane. The ground is signposted on the left after about ½ mile. Get there early and there is parking available pretty close to the ground, leave it too late (or if the big numbers turn up) then I'm afraid it is street parking around the warren of roads around Westfield Lane.

From Home of Football : 1 hour

-

From Sheffield Centre: 50 mins *

By Public Transport Nearest Station: South Elmsall ½m. Up Station Approach and Station Road, right into Barnsley Road, left into Westfield Lane, and entrance to ground is on left; ground is beyond cricket ground. (The first football ground you come to is not the one; continue past Oxford Street).

What to Expect This is what you might call a "traditional" nonleague ground - none of your new builds here! Despite its lived in look, it is one of my favourites. The ground is dominated by the elevated main stand and the iconic slag heap opposite! There are plenty of good viewing points, with covered standing along the far touchline, behind both goals are areas of uncovered terracing. All mod-cons are catered for here - there is a nice little clubhouse that opens before and after the game, a decent club shop for all you souvenir hunters, and food available from the snack bar which opens thirty minutes before the game.

Awaydays Loughborough Dynamo

ww.sheffieldfc.com

Nanpantan Sports Ground, Watermead Lane, Loughborough, Leicestershire, LE11 3TN. Telephone: 01509 237148 th Tuesday 25 September 2018 (KO 7:45)

By Car

Exit the M1 at Junction 23 and turn towards Loughborough (A512). At the First set of traffic lights turn right on to Snells Nook Lane, then at the crossroads (the Priory pub is on your left) turn left on to Nanpantan Road. Turn into the right after 0.5 miles on to Watermead Lane. The ground is at the bottom of the lane, with the pay gate just after the gates on the left. A bit of the lane down to the ground is used for parking, if you get there early you can use that, if you are a bit late or the attendance is a bit on the big size - there is still a sizeable car-park as you come onto the complex.

From Home of Football : 1 hour - From Sheffield Centre: 1 hour 10 mins

By Public Transport Nearest Station: Loughborough 3m. Kinchbus 11 from Loughborough (High Street) to Loughborough (Forest Road at Valley Road); half hourly, takes 10 mins. Continue away from town centre on Forest Road which becomes Nanpantan Road, left into Watermead Lane and ground is at end (½m). Bus back into Loughborough is Kinchbus 12.

What to Expect Our regular travelling fans should be used to this one by now - but to be fair it has come a right old way to get to where it is today. More or less it is a railed off pitch, with the stand created by seating in front of the clubhouse / bar and a kind of “awning” giving shelter. Elsewhere there is cover in the shape of a bus-shelter! The bar is not bad though, with the food being reasonable in both quality and price.

Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

Chaplain’s Corner

Mindfulness

ww.sheffieldfc.com

Professor Mark Williams, former director of the Oxford Mindfulness Centre, says that mindfulness means knowing directly what is going on inside and outside ourselves, moment by moment.

"It's easy to stop noticing the world around us. It's also easy to lose touch with the way our bodies are feeling and to end up living 'in our heads' – caught up in our thoughts without stopping to notice how those thoughts are driving our emotions and behaviour," he says. This also means that have awareness of our thoughts and feelings as they happen moment to moment. I am sure we can all visualise this, and how we feel when external influences affect us, whether it be a Club win, loss, draw, or some other significant life event. Are you aware of what is going on around you right now, whether you are reading this at the game and we have scored another 4 goals, or whether its after the game? What can you see, hear, feel? Or are you on auto-pilot? I often look around the ground and its environment, the fans, the backroom team, the players, how does the pitch look, what is the weather doing, how are people feeling?

Although it is important for us to be in the moment for ourselves, it is also important to be aware of those around us, otherwise we can become self-absorbed and the rest of the world takes a backseat to our own experiences and our own needs/wants/preferences. If we ‘in the present, then we are present and can impact the situation around us, for example if don’t respond to event on the pitch, then we don’t affect the players, this can clearly be negative if we are not careful. But if we are positive, then we lift the spirits of those around us, whether it be family, friends, colleagues and players! Let’s take a minute to have a look around, see what is going on and make a positive impact. Enjoy the game.

Cheers Chaplain Chris

Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

ww.sheffieldfc.com

Derbyshire County Council is joining the NHS, local charities and organisations in supporting World Suicide Prevention Day which is on 10 September. This year the theme is ‘Working Together to Prevent Suicides’. The effects of suicide can be far reaching and long lasting. Many people − friends, family and colleagues feel the impact.

Around The Club World Suicide Prevention Day

That's why professionals, community groups, volunteers and individuals are working together to reduce the risks of suicide. As part of the suicide prevention work in Derbyshire there will be events held at two professional matches - Derby County FC and Chesterfield FC. This year awareness raising events will also be held at three non-league matches - Alfreton Town, Belper Town and Sheffield FC. Representatives from the Samaritans, Rethink, Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, Derbyshire Mental Health Forum and other mental health organisations will be raising awareness about suicide prevention. There will be activities to engage fans as well as information and support to those who may need it. Derbyshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Health and Communities Councillor Carol Hart said: “We know that the reasons why someone may choose to take their own life can be extremely complex and people may be afraid to raise the subject for fear of not knowing what to say or do to help. “But we can all make a difference to someone who may be suffering emotional distress. There are several things that we can do if someone confides that they are feeling suicidal. “Stay calm, listen, take them seriously and encourage them to speak to a health professional.” Dr Allan Johnston, a Consultant Psychiatrist at Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and chair of the Trust’s suicide prevention group said: “It’s really positive that Derbyshire County Council, Derbyshire Healthcare and other local organisations are once again joining forces for World Suicide Prevention Day. “The theme this year is working together to prevent suicide and that couldn’t be more appropriate for Derbyshire this year, when hundreds of volunteers will be reaching out to football fans at five different matches across the county. “One of our key messages will be that we must all work together to prevent suicide: that we have to look out for one another and support our friends, relatives, co-workers and neighbours. “If one of us notices a change in the behaviour of someone we know well – perhaps they’ve become withdrawn or anxious, or they’re saying that they can’t see a way out of their problems – we can make a difference by encouraging them to seek help and showing them that they matter to us. "And when one of us meets a stranger in distress, a simple conversation or just a kind smile could go a long way in making a connection and demonstrating that someone cares.” If you, or someone you know, are feeling suicidal, there are several things that you can do: * speak to a friend, family member or someone you trust * call the Samaritans 24-hour support service on 116 123 * go to your nearest accident and emergency (A&E) department and tell the staff how you are feeling contact NHS 111 * make an urgent appointment to see your GP The World Suicide Prevention Day matches are being delivered in partnership with Derby County Football Club, Chesterfield Football Club and the Spireites Trust, the Samaritans, Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, Derbyshire Mental Health Forum, Derbyshire County Council, Derby City Council and support from other local organisations.

Club in Action

SFC Ladies

ww.sheffieldfc.com

Sheffield FC 2 Bradford City 0 FA Women’s National League North Sunday 02/09/18 Attendance: 118

Early goals in both halves of the match ensured Club picked up their first three points of the new FA Women’s National League season with a 2-0 victory over Bradford City. Both teams started the day with 0% records from their opening fixtures in league and cup, and both were determined to get their season up and running in this Yorkshire derby. The opening stages were typically energetic with both sides looking to press and cause issues, but with little real calmness and quality on the ball to open each other up. That was until the 12th minute when a nice Sheffield move down the right hand side created enough space for Ellie White to turn her marker and rifle and effort at goal. Bradford's keeper, Aimee Routledge, came to make the save but the shot eluded her and crept in at the near post. Sheffield should have settled from this point and continue to press forward, but took their foot off the gas, with some players trying to do too much individually instead of continuing to play as a team.

By contrast, the goal seemed to inject more life into the visitors though, who began to launch the ball at the Sheffield back-line, with their main threat coming from the long ball. One free-kick effort was well saved by Sheffield keeper, Liz Hobson, before Jade Butcher needed to clear off the line from the rebound to keep the hosts ahead. After this flurry, Sheffield began to assert some dominance again, moving the ball better through the midfield and creating a few openings. Just before the break, an excellent ball by Holly Housley found the feet of Lisa Giampalma in the box, who controlled the ball on a six pence before laying it off to Ellie Hawcroft who rifled a shot to the near post which was blocked just wide of the target. Sheffield came out of the blocks quickly for the second half, with White getting an early shot away from the left-hand side after some impressive combination play, Routledge this time reacting well and pushing the shot aside. The Sheffield pressure continued, and a free-kick was won 25-yards from goal. Up stepped Megan Tinsley, after a deceptive run over the ball from White parted the wall and, through the gap created, Tinsley curled a superb measured effort into the top left hand corner for 2-0. Sheffield FC: Hobson, Housley ©, Millee Clarke and Molly Havard made their entrance to the game, and instantly started to unsettle the Bradford back line as they pushed for a goal. First Clarke, and then Havard, worked space well before firing efforts wide.

White, Butcher, Hawcroft, M.Johnson, Russell, Tinsley, Wortley, Neary, Giampalma. Subs: Havard, Santoro, Clarke, Heald, Goodwin.

As Bradford pushed forward, space opened up behind their back line and Sheffield looked to exploit this with Giampalma, Havard and Clarke breaking forward to create good chances which might have seen Sheffield increase their lead. One move in particular ended with Routledge making a great save at her near post to deny Clarke.

Bradford City: Routledge, Roberts, Wisher, Norde, Jakeman ©, Clark, Gill, Shuttleworth, Pringle, Taylor, Murphy. Subs: Jacobs, McNulty, Wright, Khan, Donnan. Referee: Piotr Zak (Southey)

Classy on the ball, and dangerous from the dead-ball. Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

ww.sheffieldfc.com

EARLY FOOTBALL Versions of football evolved in many early civilisations, example of these can be found in ancient China, Greece and Rome. In England the original games were played between villages in fields and streets. This ‘Mob Football’ involved hundreds of players and was little more than prolonged and violent street battles. During the 19th century a more refined version of the game grew in popularity within the public schools and universities, each playing to their own sets of rules. THE BIRTH OF SHEFFIELD FOOT BALL CLUB. During the 1850s the enthusiasm and influence of ex-public school and university students spread the popularity of the game around Sheffield. In the summer of 1857 William Prest and Nathaniel Creswick agreed that the game would be a splendid candidate for organised sport during the winter months. The pair wrote to the Public Schools for information, regarding their varying rules, with the aim of drawing up a set of laws embodying the best points from each. On October 24th, 1857, the world’s first football club was born in a greenhouse, at the home of Harry Chambers. Chambers went on to become one of the club’s greatest players, and Secretary, in a career that spanned over 40 years. Among the first rules drawn up were laws asserting that “no hacking or tripping up is fair under any circumstances”, “no player may be held or pulled over” and “it is not lawful to take the ball off the ground [using hands]”. Upon the formation of the Football Association in 1863, Sheffield Club’s insistence on these laws began the evolution into the game we recognise globally today. Heading, solid crossbars, corner kicks, free-kicks for fouls, throw-ins, a half-time change of ends and floodlit matches can all be traced to the innovators of Sheffield F.C.! EARLY YEARS Initially early matches, such as Married men v Unmarried, had to be played between Club members. Records also show games against local army sides. Following victory over the 58 th Army Regiment in 1860 a local report stated that, “most of the officers were adepts at the game, having, in their younger days, played in the public school matches, and the victory of the civilians was quite unexpected.” Following the birth of Hallam F.C., the world’s first inter-club game took place on Boxing Day in 1860. The match “was conducted with good temper and in a friendly spirit”, concluding in a 2-0 win for Sheffield. For several years all matches were played locally, against a rising number of new sides, before the first ‘out of town’ match was played in Nottinghamshire in 1865. In 1866 the first game limited to a length of 90 minutes was played at Battersea Park against London. The FA Cup was founded in 1871 and in its third season Sheffield became the first northern side to take part. They succeeded in reaching the quarter finals in this and two further seasons also, 1876 and 1878. 1872 saw the first international game, between England and Scotland in Glasgow, with Sheffield’s Charles Clegg playing for the England side. Clegg would later go on to be Chairman, and President, of the FA and receive a knighthood for his services to the game.

Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

ww.sheffieldfc.com

From the 1880s onwards the rise of professionalism and Sheffield Club’s firm insistence of retaining their amateur status saw them overtaken and overshadowed by other sides in the area. During these years the very survival of the club owed much to the leadership of former players Harry Chambers and Harry Broughton Willey. After the death of the latter in 1933 the minutes stated that “Mr H.B. Willey for years had carried the Club on his back, administratively and financially, making up a yearly deficit from his own pocket.” It wasn’t all doom and gloom though! In fact Sheffield enjoyed possibly their greatest hour in 1904 when they won the Amateur Cup, beating Ealing 3-1 at Valley Parade, Bradford. YORKSHIRE LEAGUE 1949 brought admission to the Yorkshire League and a resurgence, which saw the side promoted to Division One in their third season and reach the League Cup final in 1953. In 1957 they celebrated their Centenary year and reached their first Sheffield and Hallamshire FA Cup final in 1962. The 1950s also saw the emergence of the Club’s greatest legend with forward Geoff Robinson (above) scoring 232 goals over 216 appearances. After a period of yo-yoing between divisions the 1977 side were crowned Division Two Champions and reached that season’s FA Vase final at Wembley. They established themselves as a top division side in the Yorkshire League, lifting the League Cup in 1978, before joining the newly founded Northern Counties East League in 1982. NORTHERN COUNTIES LEAGUE The Division One title was won in both 1989 and 1991 and a first Sheffield and Hallamshire FA Cup win came in 1994. In 2001 the club acquired a permanent ground, for the first time, when moving to its current home. After the turn of the century the side began to consistently challenge for promotion, winning both the League Cup and Sheffield and Hallamshire FA Cup on two occasions. The 2006/07 season ended with a 2 nd place finish and promotion to the Northern Premier League. NORTHERN PREMIER LEAGUE The side made an instant impact in reaching the 2008 play-off final, narrowly losing only on penalties. That first season also saw games against Inter Milan and Ajax at Bramall Lane, as part of the 150th birthday celebrations, and a few years later a win at Hallam’s Sandygate ground to mark the anniversary of the first inter-club match. Sheffield have twice more been involved in the season ending play-offs and lifted the Sheffield & Hallamshire FA Cup on two further occasions also. Manager Gavin Smith took over in May 2018, and hopes are high for 2018/19 of making good progress from last season’s disappointing 17th place finish. In addition the SFC Ladies’ team have now risen from the lowest rung of women’s football, to play alongside the elite of the game in the FA Women’s National League. Sheffield Futsal Club were again amongst the country’s leading sides, the Under 19s won the League Cup and the newly formed Sheffield FC Veterans (with Jim Fern scoring, right) went to the San Siro Stadium in Milan to win the ACLI Invitational Trophy as the club continues to go from strength to strength in the grass roots game in its 161st season.
