Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

Welcome... Manager’s Notes

ww.sheffieldfc.com

On behalf of everyone at Sheffield FC, we’d like to welcome you to this afternoon’s FA Women’s National League match against our visitors today, Stoke City Ladies FC. Our match today is being sponsored by Multitask Personnel who are supporting the ladies team this season through a generous sponsorship deal. We’d like to thank all at Multitask Personnel for their support, particularly Managing Director, Claire Thickett, and hope everyone from the company enjoys their day at the Home of Football. We’ve had a very tough run of matches in recent weeks against some of the best teams in the league, and that only continues this afternoon against a Stoke City side which is having a great start to the season, and is yet to lose in all competitions.

We’ve played the Potters already this season, in the League Cup at the start of September, and we know they ’ll be coming to us full of confidence having not suffered a defeat, are playing with freedom, and scoring at will. We know they are a team full of experienced and talented players who pull together and have each other’s back, characteristics which make them a very hard team to compete against. As for ourselves, we’re looking for an improved performance this week and a better start to the game. In recent weeks, we’ve shown glimpses of what we can do, but it’s not consistent enough. Added to that, we’ve had injury and availability issues which are still limiting us and making life harder that it could be, but it’s meant the players are getting plenty of exposure to football at this level. We know we have to impose ourselves on matches for longer periods and allow our character to show in the game. That said, we’re a better team now from when we played Stoke a month ago, and I hope we can show that today. As a Club, we’d like to thank you all for your support this afternoon – we really appreciate you continuing to back the club through this diffi cult transition period, and your support is such an encouragement to the players and staff.

Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

In S18City Today... Stoke Ladies

ww.sheffieldfc.com

Stoke City Ladies were formed in the summer of 2001 and had a successful first season in the West Midlands Regional FWL Division one finishing third before gaining promotion to the

Premier Division via the play-offs. From there, Stoke City LFC consolidated their position in the West Midlands Regional WFL Premier Division, with top four

finishes

in

2002/03,

2003/04,

2006/07 and 2007/08. In 2005/06, the club also began entering into the Staffordshire County Cup, reaching a first final at just the second attempt in 2006/07 where they beat Stafford Town 4-0 to lift the trophy for the very first time. Incredibly, the Potters have retained this title every year since then, bar 2007/08 when they were beaten by Lichfield Diamonds 2-1 in extra-time. Season 2008/09 saw the Ladies first team gain promotion into the Midland Combination WFL for the very first time as they lost just once all season to top the table by a massive 15 points from runners up Solihull. Life in the Midland Combination proved good

for Stoke as they finished mid-table in a very respectable sixth place in their debut season, improving on that in 2010/11 to finish fourth. 2011/12 proved another step forward as the ladies team finished runners up in the Midland Combination WFL, missing out on the title by just two points to Wolverhampton Wanderers WFC, and was beaten 2-0 in the League Cup final, the first time Stoke City had

reached that stage of the competition, by the same opponents.

Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

ww.sheffieldfc.com

Both first team and reserves reached the Staffordshire County Cup final that season, with the first team winning 4-0 to lift the trophy for a fifth time. The following season, the Ladies first team eclipsed their achievements of the previous season to bring home a superb treble trophy haul. They repeated their form of 2008/09 to lose just once in the league all season to top the table again by 15 points from runners up Leicester City LFC. They then went on to lift the League Cup for the very first time as they brushed aside Leafield Athletic 8-4 in a goal-strewn final. To cap a quite brilliant year, the first team beat their reserves in the Staffordshire County Cup final. Now in the FA Women’s Premier League, Stoke had a couple of mid-table finishes before an all-time best of fourth place in 2015/16, a position they have repeated for the past two seasons. Hopes are high this season that Stoke City can improve on that under new manager and previous coach, Tim Dudding, and the early signs are very good with Stoke remaining unbeaten so far in the league.

Ones City To Watch Stoke Ladies 15. Emily Owen Defence Played: 52, Goals: 7 Defender Emily Owen joined Stoke City in 2016 with a fine pedigree of playing top level football at a range of clubs. Spells at Aston Villa and Sheffield FC in FA WSL 2 were preceded by time with West Bromwich Albion and Wolverhampton Wanderers in the FA Women’s Premier League. Owen is a tall, tough tackling defender, has a quality delivery from a dead ball, and has been a great addition to the City squad. She was named Manager's Player of the Season for 2016/17 and has continued to be one of Stoke’s key players since, something she will no doubt repeat this season as one of the best defenders in the league. 23. Faye McCoy Midfield Played: 37, Goals: 17 Merseyside-born Faye McCoy first joined Stoke City in 2015 following spells ay both Liverpool and Everton, as well as Blackburn Rovers. She returned to Rovers after one season with the Potters, contributing significantly to Blackburn winning the Northern Division title that term. But 28-year old McCoy re-joined Stoke last season, and her experience at the highest level of football has played a major part in Stoke’s successes since. Not just an experienced, knowledgeable and talented playmaker in the middle, McCoy can score all sorts of goals, bagging a hat-trick in City’s win against Bradford City just a couple of weeks ago, and is already on six for the season. 10. Hannah Keryakoplis Forward Played: 61, Goals: 38 Goal scorer Hannah Keryakoplis joined Stoke City in 2013 from Liverpool where she had broken into the first team as a 17-year old and spent the last two seasons competing in FA WSL 1. She left after just one season though, joining Birmingham City back in WSL 1 for a brief spell, only to resign for the Potters for the 2015/16 season. At Stoke, Keryakoplis is a favourite with players and supporters as a strong tackling forward with a fierce right foot and great ball retention. She was Stoke’s top scorer last season, and already looks likely to retain that accolade this season with 6 goals in 6 matches. She also has over 20 caps for Wales to her name, although her last senior appearance was over four years ago. Sheffield FC v Stoke City Ladies FA WNL Northern Premier 07.10.18

FA Women’s National League Week 6 Review

Week 1 Review

There was a slightly reduced programme of matches last Sunday as Guiseley v Blackburn Rovers’ postponed League Cup match was rescheduled from the week before: Derby County 1-0 Sunderland Derby County took maximum points in their clash with table toppers, Sunderland, in a cagey contest at Mickleover Sports. Olivia Mitcham’s goal was enough to separate the two sides, in what was an, otherwise even game. Sunderland started the better of the two sides with Georgia Gibson narrowly missing the target, whilst Nikki Ledgister and Mitcham went close for County, but there was little else to trouble either goalkeeper in what was otherwise a relatively tame half of football. The second half was to be altogether livelier with Faye Mullen’s curling effort just alluded the post before Andi Bell forced Sophy Stonehouse into a good save. The goal came from a corner which fell to Ledgister whose volley seemed to be going in but was helped on its way by Mitchum (pictured). After the goal, Sunderland played with sense of urgency that they hadn’t shown previously, keeping Sarah Morgan on her toes but never really stretching her. Huddersfield Town 4-1 Hull City An emphatic victory over Hull City saw Huddersfield Town climb to the top of the table. The hosts were much fancied to take all three points and wasted no time in stating their intentions, with full-back Kerry Hope racing into the box to smash the ball into the roof of the net with less than sixty seconds on the clock. It seemed that Town were in the same form that thrashed Bradford 8-0 the previous week, but Hull City had other ideas and drew level midway through the half as Emily Smith finished smartly past Charlotte Oates to pull her side back into the contest. Normal service was resumed though when Sarah Danby (pictured) capitalised on a mix up to restore Huddersfield’s lead, then Arianne Parnham drove the ball from a wide angle to give the hosts a commanding half-time lead. The second half was much more even, Huddersfield maybe having one eye on reserving energy for their testing trip to Fylde on Wednesday night. Smart goalkeeping from Oates, though, kept Hull at bay before Town killed proceedings off with 20 minutes to go when a square ball from the right was slotted home from close range by skipper Kate Mallin. Doncaster Rovers Belles 1-3 Nottingham Forest Belles produced their best showing yet, going in at half-time on level terms, but were ultimately beaten by Nottingham Forest at Rossington Main. Sophia Bonser put the visitors ahead after less than a minute, beating goalkeeper Emily Batty from close range after the Belles failed to deal with a cross from the right. But Donny skipper Izzy Whittle (pictured) levelled things back up on 26 minutes, exploiting Forest’s dithering over Sheldon Ashton’s through ball to steal in ahead of the goalkeeper and find the back of the net and leave honours even at the break. After Batty had made a fine early save from Kelly Darby, the visitors score twice in seven minutes to grasp control of the game. First, Charlotte Griffin was left unmarked at a corner and directed a strong header into the roof of the net. Then the unfortunate Lois Scholefield turned the ball into her own net after Batty had again saved a Katie Middleton one-on-one. Belles were given the chance to pull once back from the spot on 66 minutes after a Whittle shot was handled in the box, but Forest keeper Emily Hallam guessed the right direction and saved Emily Burgin’s penalty with ease. Further chances fell to Bonser and Whittle but without addition to the score, and Forest celebrated their first win since the opening day of the season, leaving Belles still searching for their first points. Bradford City 0-4 Middlesbrough Bradford City still search for their first points of the season and were put to the sword by Middlesbrough who built on their fine win at home against Huddersfield Town a fortnight earlier. The visitors had most of the possession from the off, and took the lead on 19 minutes when Eleanor Dale was on hand to follow up captain Emma Kelly’s initial shot. Bradford showed real endeavor and resilience to minimize the damage, but could not keep out a second before halftime as Eve Marshall’s cross from the right was headed home by England WU18s player Holly Manders. And ‘Boro continued the second half where they had left off with Kelly grabbing a welldeserved goal just three minutes after the restart to virtually seal the points. However, with Bradford continuing to fight back, the game started to lose its edge as Middlesbrough started to go flat. Kelsey Byrne’s changes livened things up again, and the game was fully put to bed on 60 minutes when Marshall finished past the Bradford keeper when slotted through 1v1. FAThis Women’s National League Weekend’s Fixtures Bradford City have a week off this week-end as all other teams compete in Northern Premier fixtures this afternoon, with some intriguing match ups:

MATCH OF THE WEEK Derby County v Fylde Unbeaten Derby County enjoyed a fourth win of the season last Sunday against an in-form Sunderland which adds weight to Derby’s claims that they are title contender this season. Manager Sam Griffiths (pictured) has added significantly to her squad in the summer and all, so far, seems to be going well as the Rams lie currently in third spot (at time of writing). On paper perhaps, the hosts should have the beating of Fylde who sit in seventh place and how thus far have had a mixed bag of results, dropping points against Hull City and Nottingham Forest, but beating Sunderland and Sheffield and only losing to Blackburn Rovers 1-0. Fylde are yet to hit top form, but banging four past Sheffield last Sunday will have helped, and they won’t fear having a good go at Derby County. Matches last season between the two sides were close with Derby winning 1-0 at home, but the sides sharing the spoils in a 1-1 draw at Mill Farm. And this season’s opener should be equally tight all things considered . Prediction: Draw Sheffield FC v Stoke City Ladies FA WNL Northern Premier 07.10.18

Fylde 4 Sheffield FC 1 FA Women’s National League North Kellamergh Park, Warton Sunday, 30th September 2018 Hosts’ Fylde punished Sheffield FC Ladies’ errors to seal a 4-1 victory at Kellamergh Park, two goals either side of Lisa Giampalma’s response just before the break halting any resurgence Club might have mustered, and handing Sheffield a third consecutive league defeat. Fylde started the game the brighter, taking the game to Sheffield from the off, and with just minutes on the clock, the Fylde forwards were already asking questions of the of the visitor’s back line.

First, a driven low cross went close at the back post before a ranged Hollie Kelsh effort skimmed the woodwork. The early dangers weren’t enough to wake club up though, and on 12 minutes, Emily Hollinshead slipped her marker to receive a Sophie Charlton through ball before opening the scoring with a shot past Elizabeth Hobson. Fylde continued to pull the strings leaving Sheffield reacting rather than influencing the game, and on 36 minutes, Fylde were to double their lead in disappointing circumstances – a Jenna Carroll free-kick from range powered over the wall and beyond goalkeeper Hobson who misjudged the flight and allowed the ball to sneak in under the bar. The two goal deficit provoked a response from Sheffield who then looked to settle, with midfielders Molly Johnson and Milly Wortley holding the ball up well to supply the tireless Molly Havard and Lisa Giampalma. It was the latter who responded for Club on 45 minutes, as Havard ran the channel wide left and was able to combine with Giampalma, working the ball back through midfield where Molly Johnson used her space well to fashion a long-range attempt on goal which Sheffield FC v Stoke City Ladies FA WNL Northern Premier 07.10.18

crashed against the bar but Giampalma was quickest to respond, hitting the ball on the turn past Brittany Jackson to halve the deficit. The second half brought about an upturn in intensity, resulting in a competitive fixture with plenty of bite.

But, all Sheffield’s good intentions of a fight back were delivered a hammer blow after just six minutes when a cross from the Fylde right was dropped by Hobson, and bundled into the path of the Fylde forward who laid it off to Kelsh to power into the back of the net, restoring the hosts’ two goal cushion. Sheffield tried to rally and made much more of a contest in the second half, but failed to really apply consistent pressure on their opponents to force real openings. On 90 minutes, a Rosa Neary clearance was hit straight at the oncoming player, allowing her to charge through into the box where she was hauled down by Hobson, and Charlton stepped up to dispatch the resulting penalty and cap off their victory, sending Club home empty-handed. “It’s a pretty frustrating day overall” admitted Sheffield’s manager, Kyle O’Reilly. “We’ve given ourselves a lot of hard work to do after a slow start, and only really started to play after going 2-0 down. “ “Once we woke up, it became a good match and I felt we could have got something from the game, but ultimately mistakes have cost us again. “No matter how well we play, if we’re gifting goals away and allowing the opposition opportunities, then picking up points is always going to be difficult.” “We have to tighten up in what we’re doing, and look to bounce back quickly with more consistent performances.”

Prescot Cables 6 Sheffield FC 2 FA Trophy Extra Preliminary Replay Hope Street, Prescot Tuesday, 2nd October 2018

Sheffield FC rued the missed opportunity to progress in another cup competition, as they crashed out of the FA Trophy 6-2 to Prescot Cables at Hope Street on Tuesday evening, after drawing 2-2 at the Home of Football the previous Saturday. It was a terrible start for Sheffield, as from the off they were put on the back foot with a break on the right hand side, with the ball whipped across for Jake Linehan (pictured) to stab home from close range. The hosts looked as if they would add to the tally at will, with several attempts going close, as the visitors were cut open through the middle by a dominant home midfield.

Eventually Club came back into the game, with Waide Fairhurst and Sam Wright going close, and Julian Lawrence adventuring forward to head over. The scores were levelled on 29 minutes as a lofted ball forward by Stuart Ludlam cut open the defence, with Waide Fairhurst taking the ball, lobbing the keeper with a perfectly weighted effort to silence the home crowd, Five minutes before the break Sheffield were punished for ball watching, with Jordan Wynne taking advantage of sloppy defending, to drive home at the second attempt.

Sheffield started the second half with more purpose, and after Ben Turner and James Gregory went close, Club found themselves level on the hour mark. Johnny Pugh put a corner in that was half cleared, the winger put a deeper ball back into the box, with centre half Julian Lawrence volleying the ball home from ten yards out. Parity lasted a matter of seconds, as a hasty clearance from the substitute Prescot keeper caught Club flat, with Chris Almond breaking the defence to round Adam Kelsey to make it 3-2 to Cables. Ten minutes later the tie was more or less put out of reach, as Lawrence was caught out at the back to concede a penalty; Almond stepped up to send Kelsey the wrong way. It took two more minutes for Prescot to make it 5-2, with Sheffield switching off once again at the back, and Josh Klein-Davies driving the ball home emphatically with the defence watching. The scoring was completed just before full-time, again the defence cut open with some more tired looking defending, allowing Lloyd Dean to tap in an easy goal. Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

ww.sheffieldfc.com

Sheffield FC Ladies Sheffield FC Ladies was formed in 2003 when previous team Norton Ladies affiliated with the oldest football club in the world, Sheffield FC. The Club started life in Division 1 East of the Yorkshire & Humberside Regional WFL, the bottom level of the women’s pyramid of football at the time, which became the North East Regional WFL in 2005/06. Having finished third, then runners up for two successive seasons, Sheffield finally won their first league title in 2007/08, and within the space of two more seasons, were promoted into the Northern Combination WFL, which they won at the first attempt in 2010/11. Sheffield’s debut season at FA Women’s Premier League level could hardly have gone much better as Sheffield finished the year as Northern Division runners up behind eventual champions Manchester City. The team picked up silverware for the third season running, courtesy of a very first win in the Sheffield & Hallamshire Women’s Challenge Cup. Sheffield went one better in the league in 2012/13 as they lifted the FA WPL Northern Division title for the very first time, losing just one league match in total and finishing nine points clear of Nottingham Forest. They also repeated their success in the S&H Women’s Challenge Cup, beating Rotherham United 6-0 in the final. With promotion to the FA Women’s Super League not possible, Sheffield were forced to defend their FA WPL Northern Division crown in 2013/14, which they managed to do with five matches to go, ultimately finishing 15 points clear of runners up Preston North End. They added a third successive S&H Women’s Challenge Cup, but the highlight of the season was winning the FA Women’s Premier League Cup by beating Cardiff City 6-2 in the final, crowning off an historic treble trophy winning season.

History 2003-2018 In 2014/15, the first team missed out on a second successive FA WPL Cup losing on penalties in the final to Charlton Athletic after a 0-0 draw, but the Sheffield & Hallamshire Women’s Challenge Cup was won for a fourth year running. The Club enjoyed a best ever run in the FA Women’s Cup by reaching the Fifth Round. Sheffield FC won a third successive FA WPL Northern Division title, to secure a place in a first ever Championship Play Off Final in which an injury time winner saw Sheffield beat Portsmouth to become the first club to gain promotion on merit to the top flight of the game: the FA Women’s Super League. Under new first team manager Zoe Johnson, Sheffield secured a respectable fifth place finish in their debut FA WSL season and reached the quarter-finals of the Continental Tyres. The development team finished as runners up in both the FA WSL Northern Division and the League Cup, losing 2-1 in extra time to Arsenal. The 2017 Spring Series was less of a success for Sheffield as they finished one place off the bottom in ninth, and were unlucky to go out of the FA Women’s Cup at the fourth round stage to a controversial penalty in a 1-0 defeat to Doncaster Rovers Belles. But the team kick started again for the 2017/18 season having change back to a winter season, with Sheffield once again finishing top half in fifth place, beating their previous points total. With the FA’s continued agenda to drive the financial burden of clubs competing at Tier 2 up and up, Sheffield were forced to make the incredibly difficult decision to withdraw from the newly constituted FA Women’s Championship before the 2018/19 season, and thus begin this season in the new FA Women’s National League
