Welcome... To The Home of Football

ww.sheffieldfc.com

Hello and welcome to Dronfield for today’s FA Trophy game between Sheffield FC and Prescot Cables

We hope our guests enjoy their first visit at The Home of Football Stadium, and that they have a pleasant and safe journey back after the game. Having played so well against Gresley last weekend, and seeing us put a good performance in the League Cup against Stocksbridge, the loss to Loughborough was both very hard to take and very hard to watch. We were never in the game, and our shape and discipline was far from acceptable, with us once again conceding sloppy goals from basic errors. We need to have a long hard look at ourselves, come to grips with our shortcomings, and go again against some very difficult opposition Both today against Prescot, and on Tuesday against Morpeth, we will be up against very confident sides who are on a positive roll at the top of their respective tables. We will need to be at our best. Enjoy the game UTC Gav

Prescot Cables

ww.sheffieldfc.com

Formed in 1884, Prescot FC played friendly games for several years before joining the Liverpool & District League in 1889. They achieved a best finish of 3 rd before moving to the Lancashire Alliance in 1895, where they were crowned as champions in 1900. Despite finishing bottom the following season the team moved to a higher level in the Lancashire League in 1901 although ground problems saw the club inactive until 1906 when Prescot Athletic was formed, playing in the St Helens & District League, winning the title at the first attempt, the Liverpool League and the Liverpool County Combination, from 1911/12.

After the war Prescot played in Lancashire Combination and the Liverpool County Combination for a time. In 1928, the local expanding cable giants, BICC, donated a magnificent 1,000-seater stand to the club, a deal which saw the club’s name changed to Prescot Cables. They joined the Lancashire Combination in 1928/29 and at the end of the season applied, unsuccessfully, to join the Football League. They had some cup success between the wars, winning the Liverpool Challenge Cup in 3 consecutive years and the Lancashire Combination Cup in 1939. The club tasted more success through the 50s and into ‘60s. They won the Lancashire Combination Division 2 title in 1952, finished runners-up in the top division 3 times and won the league in 1957. Up to 1962 they also added 6 cup wins in Liverpool and Lancashire competitions. After a period of struggle the club dropped to the Mid-Cheshire League, winning the title immediately in 1977 and lifting another Liverpool Challenge Cup the following season. In 1978 they joined the Cheshire County League and in 1980 beat Accrington Stanley to the Division 2 title. The North West Counties League was formed in 1982 and Cables would play in the competition for the next 20 years. They continually challenged in the top half of the table before finishing as runners-up in 2002, also lifting the League Cup that season, and then winning the title the following year. This meant promotion to the Northern Premier League and, after a re-structure of the league system, the were catapulted straight to the Premier Division, where they performed strongly, only missing promotion after losing to Workington in the play-offs. A key change came in 2005 as Cables became a Community Interest Company owned by more than 300 supporters who each pay a small annual subscription in return for one share. After a series of mid-table finishes Prescot were relegated to Division 1 North of the NPL in 2009. After an uninspiring period, finishing no higher than 15 th , they ended last season in a play -off spot before losing at Bamber Bridge in the promotion decider. They did have a reason to celebrate when they beat Marine to win the Liverpool Senior Cup, having won the trophy for the first time in their history last year. Looking to challenge for promotion again this season Cables have made a very positive start and are well placed just behind the leaders in Division 1 West. After an opening day defeat at Trafford they took 4 points from their next 2 games in August before really coming to life in September. They hammered Chasetown 6-1 before beating Newcastle and Market Drayton to rise up the standings. After knocking Workington out of the League Cup, they won 3-0 at Kendal last Saturday, with prolific striker Christopher Almond netting a hat-trick to make it 8 for him this season. Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

ww.sheffieldfc.com

There is just a single previous meeting between the clubs and that came just over 20 years ago, in the FA Vase at the start of November 1997. Prescot were playing in the top flight of the North West Counties Football League, on their way to finishing 7th in the final table. The division was won by Kidsgrove, who we have met many times in recent years of course, with another familiar side, Newcastle Town, ending in 3rd. Cables had beaten Holker Old Boys 2-0 in the final Qualifying Round to set up their Vase clash with Sheffield. Club had experienced a mixed start to the season, opening their Northern Counties East League campaign with a good win at Hucknall Town but then losing their next two home games and going out of the FA Cup when they lost 1-3 at St Helens Town. Three wins and a couple of defeats followed in the league before their FA Vase challenge began with a Qualifying Round trip to play Louth Town. A goal from full-back Lee Myers put Club into the next round, where they were drawn out away to Prescot. Ahead of the trip to Merseyside Sheffield experienced a run of four games without a win, scoring just twice, but Paul Brook and Marcus Brameld scored in a President ’s Cup win against Armthorpe Welfare to raise spirits. Brameld was again on the scoresheet for the FA Vase game with Club easing into the next round courtesy of a 2-0 victory, David Lloyd scoring the other goal. This set up a trip to Stockton for the 2nd round and Sheffield must have been feeling positive about their chances, particularly after making it a trio of cup wins in their next game, beating Athersley Recreation in the Sheffield & Hallamshire FA Cup. 1997/98 was to be a rollercoaster in terms of results however and the inconsistency returned with a pair of heavy cup losses, failing to score and conceding 9 as the side tumbled out of the President’s and League Cup competitions. After a league draw against Arnold Town Club headed north but, despite a goal for striker Roger McKenzie, they went down 3-1 and their FA Vase challenge was over for another season. It was a different story for Prescot’s league rivals Kidsgrove though as they negotiated 7 rounds, a total of 10 games including replays, to set up a Semi Final clash with Tiverton Town. Despite winning their home leg they went out on aggregate, with Tiverton going on to lift the trophy, a success they repeated the following year. Of course, Club’s best ever FA Vase performance came in 1977 when they reached Wembley, drawing against Billericay before losing a replay at Nottingham Forest’s City Ground. Over the following years the competition didn’t bring much in the way of success, Round 4 being the best run and a Round 3 loss against Stone Dominoes the best performance following our previous meeting with Prescot. Since promotion to the Northern Premier League in 2007 Sheffield have been playing in the FA Trophy of course, alongside today’s opponents in the competition. At the first attempt Club reached the final Qualifying Round, only losing against Colwyn Bay after a penalty shootout. In both 2011/12 and 2013/14 that run was matched, losing against Nuneaton Town and Gresley respectively. During the period, a span of 7 seasons, Sheffield played a grand total of 21 games in the FA Trophy. Meanwhile the competition wasn’t proving quite as fruitful for Prescot who went out at the first hurdle in each attempt! 2014/15 finally saw FIRST MEETING – Cables win a game, when they won at Salford in the 01/11/1997 Preliminary Round, with both today’s sides going out in the 1st Qualifying Round. The following season FA Vase 1st Round Sheffield reached the 1st Qualifying Round while Prescot didn’t negotiate the Preliminary hurdle and in Prescot Cables 0 the last 2 years the places have been switched with Sheffield unable to make it past their first game. SHEFFIELD FC 2 Hopefully, whatever the final result today, this Marcus Brameld, afternoon’s fixture can spark a good run for the victors David Lloyd in a competition where supporters haven’t had much joy in recent years.

Sheffield FC 3 Stocksbridge PS 1 Integro League Cup Round One Tuesday 18/09/18 Attendance: 205

Sheffield FC eased into the second round of the Integro League Cup, writes Stuart James, as they beat local rivals Stocksbridge Park Steels. Both sides fielded vastly changed sides from their weekend league games, taking the opportunity to look at new signings and fringe players, along with promising youngsters that have impressed in each's youth set ups. Club made the ideal start, as after just two minutes Waide Fairhurst made a good run across the face of the goal, before unleashing a great finish to make it 1-0. Sheffield looked likely to extend their lead, with debutant Johnny Pugh delivering some decent free-kicks, and also going close with a shot of his own. It was Steels who levelled on 13 minutes however, following some poor defending from a cross on the left, Kane Swinburn was allowed to head home unchallenged from close range. Josh Turton made a great save shortly after to stop the visitors taking the lead, bravely stopping an effort from Lewis Witham, whilst Matt Roney went close with a shot at the opposite end. Ex-Clubbie keeper Jordan Greaves made a fine stop from a rasping James Gregory shot, with Pugh once again going close on a couple more occasions, whilst Stocksbridge struck the post on the halfhour mark, following Josh Reaney taking advantage of more slack defending. Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

The second half saw Sheffield far more adventurous, with Ant Mackie heading close from a Gregory cross, with Gregory once more turning provider for Pugh to force another save from Greaves. Sheffield's youngsters gave a good account of themselves, with Alfie Eagle and Iren Wilson combining well to go close, unfortunately not troubling the visiting keeper. On 68 minutes Club took the lead, a freekick awarded in the danger area just outside the area, Pugh stepping up to drive it into the top corner. It should have been three moments later another free-kick into the box should have been buried, with Julian Lawrence just unable to connect his header, whilst Pugh went even closer with another drive that struck the bar with Greaves well-beaten.

The tie was wrapped up on 77 minutes following good work from Sam Wright and Iren Wilson combining, with Wilson picking out Gregory with an excellent pass, who in turn completed the move with a super-cool finish (above) that was curled round the keeper. It ended on a sour note for the hosts, following a small stramash between both sides, with Ant Mackie seeing red for his reaction in the argument.

Loughborough Dynamo 6 Sheffield FC 0 Evo-Stik East Division Tuesday 25/09/18 Attendance: 80

Sheffield FC suffered an embarrassing defeat on Tuesday evening, writes Stuart James, as they were hit for six by free-scoring Loughborough Dynamo. It was a disastrous first half performance that caused all the damage for the visitors, as they were taken apart in clinical fashion, with Dynamo rattling in four before the break Dynamo set the tone from the off and pushed forward, being rewarded with the opening goal in the 14th minute when good work by Josh Riley down the right, which saw him playing the ball to Karl Demidh who curled his shot into the net from the corner of the area. A minute later it was two nil to Dynamo, with Sheffield at sixes and sevens at the back, allowing Ryan Robbins to rifle in a low cross from the left-hand side, which Alfie Eagle turned into his own net. Sheffield’s cause was hardly helped by some eccentric decisions by referee Elliott Kaye, with the man in the middle baffling and frustrating both benches with a series of judgements that had players, supporters and coaching members scratching their heads and laughing in disbelief. The third goal eventually came from another dubious call from the officials, as Danny Gordon played a pass over the top to Demidh who was at least five yards offside, who took advantage to run onto to net his second. Demidh completed a first half hat trick and netted Dynamo’s fourth from the penalty spot on 36 minutes, after Luke Foster was dragged down in the area by a frustrated Daz Winter, as the hosts took a free kick. Sheffield were more competitive in the second half; however, the damage had already been done, and it had become a matter of damage limitation and trying to restore a bit of pride from the last 45 minutes. Ryan Robbins scored the fifth on 54 minutes, when Charlie Young played a through ball that the prolific striker took past Ross Durrant, strolling the ball into the net. The scoring was completed on 66 minutes after more slack Sheffield defending, when Liam Read hit a far post cross that Robbins won, setting up Young who fired home. It was a measure of how one-sided the contest was when Sheffield finally made their first meaningful shot on goal, just eight minutes left, with Mitchell Dunne getting a strike not far off target. This was Sheffield worst ever Northern Premier League regular season defeat, and the worst in league football since a 6-0 home loss to North Ferriby United, all the way back in April 1996.

Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

League Review With Steve Whitney

ww.sheffieldfc.com

Morpeth Town made it six wins in a succession to stay top of the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Division One East table with a hard-fought win over previously unbeaten Ossett United.

In front of a crowd of 344, the home side`s winner came from Iulian Petrache after 63 minutes. Morpeth`s former Ebac Northern League rivals Marske United are second after coming from behind to beat Tadcaster Albion 2-1 at Mount Pleasant. Tadcaster went in front just after halftime through Lamin Colley, but after Curtis Round had a shot cleared off the line, Jamie Owens headed Marske level from a corner on 78 minutes. And in stoppage time, Damien Stevens fired Marske`s winner. Brighouse Town are third after a fine 3-0 derby win at Westfield Lane against Yorkshire rivals Frickley Athletic. Aaron Martin gave Town a 13th minute lead that Gabby Johnson eventually doubled 11 minutes into the second half. Recent signing Ousman Cham grabbed a third with 7 minutes remaining. A fast start from Stamford AFC laid the foundations for the Daniels` derby victory at the Zeeco Stadium against struggling Spalding United. Stamford struck three times in the opening period through Rob Morgan, Joe Burgess and Reece Morris to record their first victory of September which moves them up into fourth place in the table while leaving the Tulips still seeking their first league success of the season. Stanley Mugisha added a fourth just after the hour-mark. Bottom-markers Pickering Town suffered a sixth defeat in nine games, losing 2-1 at home to Lincoln United. And that despite taking an early 6th minute lead through Nick Thompson. Matt Cotton`s penalty pulled the Whites back on level terms 9 minutes later, with Mike Jacklin`s goal 6 minutes after half-time proving to be the visitors` winner. Belper Town made it back-to-back wins after seven previous league games without a win after a 3-2 success at new boys AFC Mansfield. And they had to come back from a 2-0 deficit after goals from Kieran Wells in the 14th and 25th minutes. Alex Peterson scored a crucial Nailers reply just before half-time, and then Nathan Curtis in the 74th minute pulled them on level terms. Pitou Crouz popped up with a stoppage time winner for Belper.

Bill Stokeld Stadium, Stoke Lane, Gedling, Nottingham, NG4 2QS Telephone: 0115 9403 192 th Saturday 6 October 2018 (KO 3:00)

By Car

Most people prefer to get down to that side of Nottingham by getting off the M1 at junction 29, go along A617, towards Mansfield, then turn right at the lights and take the A6009 (signposted M1 South, and Derby A38), returning back onto the A617. Turn onto the A614 (heading towards Nottingham, 3rd exit), eventually branching left onto the A6097 (signposted Leicester) Epperstone By-pass. At the A612 roundabout take the third exit, follow this towards Nottingham until you reach the new A612 Gedling By Pass (on your left) and follow to the next set of traffic lights at Severn Trent Works. Turn right on to Stoke Lane. Entrance to Carlton Town is immediate right. (Ground can only be accessed via this new Gedling By Pass Road).

From Home of Football : 1 hour 15 mins - From Sheffield Centre: 1 hour 25 mins*

By Public Transport Nearest Station: Nottingham 5žm. Nottingham City Transport bus 100 from Nottingham (King Street) to Carlton (Burton Road at Coronation Walk); three times per hour, takes 17 mins. Then continue up Burton Road, right into Stoke Lane, and ground is on left (Ÿm).

What to Expect One of the more basic grounds in our league, but seems to have improvements every time we go. Cover is down one side attached to the pavilion, and behind the goal to your right in the shape of a seated stand (right). There is a bar on the right as you come in, and a food hatch serving the usual mod cons to the left. Expect the best welcome in the league, the fans are great, even if the bugling is a bit rough. Sir Halley Stewart Field Winfrey Avenue Spalding Lincolnshire PE11 1DA Telephone: 01775 713328 th Saturday 20 October 2018 (KO 3:00)

By Car

A long one this - whichever way you are getting here. Head south on the A1, going as far as the Colsterworth junction, exiting and heading east along the A151 towards and through Bourne. Continue on towards Spalding town centre, turning left at the “Station Gates” public house, and immediately right at the Sainsbury’s Supermarket, and left into Winfrey Avenue. Parking is a bit of a dodgy affair, free-parking is available a short walk away from the ground if you can find it, but the majority choose the Pay and Display across from the main gates. It costs about £1.50 for the length of the game.

From Home of Football: 2 hours. From Sheffield Centre: 2 hours 10 mins*

By Public Transport Nearest Station: Spalding ¼m. Out of station, cross road and walk through car park, then left into Winfrey Avenue and ground is on right.

What to Expect It’s a lovely old ground this one. There are a plethora of portacabins scattered about, with the main feature being the main stand (right). The main stand is steep, has a double staircase and offers a panoramic view of the town. Other than that it is tree lined and backs onto terraced housing. There are some steps behind the far goal, and flat standing elsewhere. For refreshments there is the clubhouse to your left as you come in, and if it is still there, a very popular chip bar next to it. Around The Club

In Other News...

ww.sheffieldfc.com

Sheffield FC supporter and friend of the Club Jayce Dixon has a title fight on Friday 28th October, against Anthony Tomlinson at Magna, which headlines the show for an all-Sheffield derby.

Jayce has helped Sheffield FC’s first team squad with fitness training this summer, holding sessions at De Hood gym at Manor Top, which set the lads up for the new season. If you want to get behind one of our own at the Magna Showdown, contact 07503893482 for tickets, availability is limited, as the show is nearly sold out. Good luck Jayce - and Up the Club. ___________________________________________________________________________________ Hopefully making his debut today is goalkeeper Adam Kelsey, who was signed on a Short Term Loan from Scunthorpe United on Thursday evening. Adam joined the Iron in October 2015 as a youth team player before signing academy terms for the following season. After leaving Hull City, a club he'd been with for seven years, Kelsey joined the Iron and is a highly-rated shot stopper among the coaching staff. Kelsey was offered, and signed, his first professional contract in January 2017 - 18-months ahead the end of his scholarship. He penned a two-and-a-half year deal with a further 12 months in the club's favour.

We hope Adam does very well with the World’s First, and hope he benefits from his time with us.

AFC Emley 1 Sheffield FC 6 FA Youth Cup 1st Qualifying Round Thursday 20/09/18 Attendance: 45

Club in Action Under 18s

Russ Eagle's Under 18 squad turned on a stunning second half performance on Thursday, beating AFC Emley 6-1 at a rainy Welfare Ground, setting them up for a home tie against neighbours Chesterfield FC on October 4th. Club took an 11th minute lead, after Alfie Eagle burst down the left to deliver an excellent ball, with Lewis Butcher making no mistake with the finish. What followed was a rather lacklustre first half from the young Clubbies, with the best efforts coming from a Callum Walton shot that was deflected wide, and Butcher forcing two fine saves from Thomas Gledhill in the Emley goal. Emley were allowed to get a foothold in the game, and on the stroke of half time they drew level as a free kick from Sam Cole was turned in by Marshall Ford. The visitors were treated to some stern half time words from Coach Eagle, and they did the trick as Sam White found Callum Walton, who finished with a tremendous shot into top corner. Two minutes later "Tigger" has his second and Club's third, as Butcher showed tenacity on the left, to square for Walton to slam home from close range. Midway through the second half the tie was wrapped up, Ben Mitcheson with a fine through ball, finished by Regan Watkinson. It was 5-1 seven minutes from time, Saxon Hargreaves hacking down Matt Porter in the box, with skipper Sam Morley easing it home from the spot. In injury time Club finished the scoring following some suicidal defending from the hosts, with keeper Gledhill losing the ball, and Porter walking the ball into the empty net.

AFC Emley: Gledhill, Read, Scott, Silson, Cole, Chippendale, Hargreaves, Ford, Cranswick Š, Donovan. Subs: East, Younghusband, Marriott, Mallinson, Parsons. Sheffield FC: Woodcock, Carpenter, Eagle, Porter, Chappell, White, Walton, Mitcheson, Butcher, Watkinson, Morley Š. Subs: Phillis, Wright, Carterton, Currie. Referee: Jamie Waters (Holmfirth)

Sheffield FC 1 Sunderland 3 FA National League North Sunday 23/09/18 Attendance: 78

Sunderland edged past Sheffield to take their place at the FA Women’s National League Northern Premier Division summit in a 3-1 win at the Home of Football. It was the visitors who were to ask the first questions of the day with Bridget Galloway forcing Liz Hobson to tip a long-range shot over the crossbar after five minutes. Sheffield were able to keep the Black Cats at arm’s length though in spite of their attempts to forge an early opening. Megan Tinsley began a response from Sheffield, firstly a ranged shot over the bar followed by a tidy move between Molly Havard & Holly Housley allowing the full-back another attempt which this time was just off target at the back post. Just as Sheffield seemed to be getting on top in the game, Sunderland took the lead when the impressive Katie Barker opened the scoring on 23 minutes, squeezing an effort under Hobson from a tight angle after a break up Sheffield’s left. In spite of going behind, the Sheffield reaction was really positive, and was rewarded just before half time, when an excellent team move worked the ball up the left side to Housley who crossed in beyond the Sunderland defence to the on rushing Millee Clarke who slotted home her first senior competitive goal and Sheffield’s equaliser. Once play resumed after the break, it was Sunderland who would emerge the sharper, instantly putting Sheffield on the back foot and exploiting the hosts’ lethargic start to the second half. A poor clearance by Hobson landed straight at the feet of Keira Ramshaw who had no hesitation in dispatching a shot into the back of the net to re-establish Sheffield FC: Hobson, Havard, Sunderland’s lead. Two could have turned into the Housley ©, Butcher, Russell, three very quickly as Galloway was released through Hawcroft, Wortley, Johnson, on goal only to fire wide of the target from a great position. Substitute Jordan Atkinson then had Clarke, Neary, Tinsley. opportunity to extend the lead, but Hobson was on Subs: Santoro, White, Heald, hand this time to maintain the score line and keep Wainwright. Sheffield in the game with a good save from close range. Sunderland: Stonehouse, Brown, Moments later, though, Sunderland’s persistence McCatty, Griffiths, Warren, would pay off as Ramshaw was again on hand for her Barker, Gibson, Ramshaw ©, team after a quick counter-attack, her goal sealing the points for the Black Cats who climbed to the top of the Hutchinson, Young, Galloway. table. Subs: Atkinson, Kemp, Mullen, Sheffield never matched their display from the first Woolston, Skull. half, with their only real sight of goal coming off a good move up the right with Jess Heald and Havard Referee: Stacey Hall (Beighton) combining to set up Housley, but her shot flew over the stand. Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

Chaplain’s Corner

I’m Fine

ww.sheffieldfc.com

If I ask you, how are you? what will your reply be, in many cases we answer I’m fine, but are we? The Mental Health Foundation ran a campaign called ‘I’m fine’ and the results were interesting, a study of 2,000 adults revealed that the average adult will say "I'm fine" 14 times per week. Yet only 19% mean it. Would it not be better if we felt that we could open about our feelings and bring back meaning to daily conversations?

It appears that most of us are happy to openly discuss our feelings, but many of us are just sticking to a script that we feel comfortable with and although we appear to check in with each other we are unable to say how we really feel. “I’m fine” has become our comfort zone, our security blanket. However, there are many things we really mean or are thinking, when we answer with, “I’m fine.” Here are some examples: I am not fine, but it is easier to say that, than explain how I really am feeling. I am struggling, but really do not want you to know that because it makes me feel weak. I am struggling, but my eyes are open, and I am talking to you, so that must mean I am fine. I may be just too tired to answer with anything other than I am fine. The people around us in our lives are crucial for our mental health. People with strong connections live happier, healthier and longer lives than those without. That’s why we all need a healthy network of friends and family who we are comfortable to confide in when we need to. It is important to have people to talk to who will really listen, without judging us, to help us work through how we really do feel, this is part of the role of the chaplain to help people in mind, body and spirit. Across Sheffield and South Yorkshire there is a growing network of people who are being trained to just listen, have a look at http://www.sycls.co.uk, you might even find my mug shot! Next time someone asks 'how are you?', try going off the standard script and say the truth instead of 'I’m fine' and see how a more meaningful conversation unfolds.

Enjoy the game. Cheers Chaplain Chris Sheffield FC v Prescot Cables FA Trophy Extra Preliminary Round - 28.09.18

133 years ago Club had travelled to play Southport Association the previous year, winning 3-0, and drawn at home in January 1885 and they opened the 1885/86 season by once again travelling west for a game, picking up

another good win in the seaside town. September 28th: Southport Association 1, SHEFFIELD FC 2 (Frank Baines, Daff Davy) 120 years ago In 1898 Sheffi eld played in the Yorkshire League, albeit a different competition from the Yorkshire League they would compete in for many years from 1949. They had begun with two defeats, and would win just four games in the season, but in this week picked up a fine win at home to Bradford. September 24th: SHEFFIELD FC 4 (Harry Potts, Joseph Eadon, G.Payne, Marris), Bradford 2 80 years ago Sheffi eld Association League action this week in 1938 in the shape of a trip to Thurnscoe. Dr. T. 60 years ago The Amateur Cup kicked off in 1958 with Club facing a trip to play the fantastically named Boots Athletic. September 27th: Boots Athletic 1, SHEFFIELD FC 2 (Brian Fitzhugh, Brian Lambert) 20 years ago 1998 has seen a mixed start, a theme which would run through the season, but in this week they picked up two victories in the NCEL Premier Division, making it four wins in a row. Mark Smith scored in both matches and the striker would also find the next in the next two. Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

ww.sheffieldfc.com

EARLY FOOTBALL Versions of football evolved in many early civilisations, example of these can be found in ancient China, Greece and Rome. In England the original games were played between villages in fields and streets. This ‘Mob Football’ involved hundreds of players and was little more than prolonged and violent street battles. During the 19th century a more refined version of the game grew in popularity within the public schools and universities, each playing to their own sets of rules. THE BIRTH OF SHEFFIELD FOOT BALL CLUB. During the 1850s the enthusiasm and influence of ex-public school and university students spread the popularity of the game around Sheffield. In the summer of 1857 William Prest and Nathaniel Creswick agreed that the game would be a splendid candidate for organised sport during the winter months. The pair wrote to the Public Schools for information, regarding their varying rules, with the aim of drawing up a set of laws embodying the best points from each. On October 24th, 1857, the world’s first football club was born in a greenhouse, at the home of Harry Chambers. Chambers went on to become one of the club’s greatest players, and Secretary, in a career that spanned over 40 years. Among the first rules drawn up were laws asserting that “no hacking or tripping up is fair under any circumstances”, “no player may be held or pulled over” and “it is not lawful to take the ball off the ground [using hands]”. Upon the formation of the Football Association in 1863, Sheffield Club’s insistence on these laws began the evolution into the game we recognise globally today. Heading, solid crossbars, corner kicks, free-kicks for fouls, throw-ins, a half-time change of ends and floodlit matches can all be traced to the innovators of Sheffield F.C.! EARLY YEARS Initially early matches, such as Married men v Unmarried, had to be played between Club members. Records also show games against local army sides. Following victory over the 58 th Army Regiment in 1860 a local report stated that, “most of the officers were adepts at the game, having, in their younger days, played in the public school matches, and the victory of the civilians was quite unexpected.” Following the birth of Hallam F.C., the world’s first inter-club game took place on Boxing Day in 1860. The match “was conducted with good temper and in a friendly spirit”, concluding in a 2-0 win for Sheffield. For several years all matches were played locally, against a rising number of new sides, before the first ‘out of town’ match was played in Nottinghamshire in 1865. In 1866 the first game limited to a length of 90 minutes was played at Battersea Park against London. The FA Cup was founded in 1871 and in its third season Sheffield became the first northern side to take part. They succeeded in reaching the quarter finals in this and two further seasons also, 1876 and 1878. 1872 saw the first international game, between England and Scotland in Glasgow, with Sheffield’s Charles Clegg playing for the England side. Clegg would later go on to be Chairman, and President, of the FA and receive a knighthood for his services to the game.

Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

ww.sheffieldfc.com

From the 1880s onwards the rise of professionalism and Sheffield Club’s firm insistence of retaining their amateur status saw them overtaken and overshadowed by other sides in the area. During these years the very survival of the club owed much to the leadership of former players Harry Chambers and Harry Broughton Willey. After the death of the latter in 1933 the minutes stated that “Mr H.B. Willey for years had carried the Club on his back, administratively and financially, making up a yearly deficit from his own pocket.” It wasn’t all doom and gloom though! In fact Sheffield enjoyed possibly their greatest hour in 1904 when they won the Amateur Cup, beating Ealing 3-1 at Valley Parade, Bradford. YORKSHIRE LEAGUE 1949 brought admission to the Yorkshire League and a resurgence, which saw the side promoted to Division One in their third season and reach the League Cup final in 1953. In 1957 they celebrated their Centenary year and reached their first Sheffield and Hallamshire FA Cup final in 1962. The 1950s also saw the emergence of the Club’s greatest legend with forward Geoff Robinson (above) scoring 232 goals over 216 appearances. After a period of yo-yoing between divisions the 1977 side were crowned Division Two Champions and reached that season’s FA Vase final at Wembley. They established themselves as a top division side in the Yorkshire League, lifting the League Cup in 1978, before joining the newly founded Northern Counties East League in 1982. NORTHERN COUNTIES LEAGUE The Division One title was won in both 1989 and 1991 and a first Sheffield and Hallamshire FA Cup win came in 1994. In 2001 the club acquired a permanent ground, for the first time, when moving to its current home. After the turn of the century the side began to consistently challenge for promotion, winning both the League Cup and Sheffield and Hallamshire FA Cup on two occasions. The 2006/07 season ended with a 2 nd place finish and promotion to the Northern Premier League. NORTHERN PREMIER LEAGUE The side made an instant impact in reaching the 2008 play-off final, narrowly losing only on penalties. That first season also saw games against Inter Milan and Ajax at Bramall Lane, as part of the 150th birthday celebrations, and a few years later a win at Hallam’s Sandygate ground to mark the anniversary of the first inter-club match. Sheffield have twice more been involved in the season ending play-offs and lifted the Sheffield & Hallamshire FA Cup on two further occasions also. Manager Gavin Smith took over in May 2018, and hopes are high for 2018/19 of making good progress from last season’s disappointing 17th place finish. In addition the SFC Ladies’ team have now risen from the lowest rung of women’s football, to play alongside the elite of the game in the FA Women’s National League. Sheffield Futsal Club were again amongst the country’s leading sides, the Under 19s won the League Cup and the newly formed Sheffield FC Veterans (with Jim Fern scoring, right) went to the San Siro Stadium in Milan to win the ACLI Invitational Trophy as the club continues to go from strength to strength in the grass roots game in its 161st season.
