Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

Welcome... Manager’s Notes

ww.sheffieldfc.com

On behalf of everyone at Sheffield FC, we’d like to welcome you to this evening’s FA Women’s National League match against our visitors tonight, Derby County Ladies FC. Derby is a club with whom Sheffield FC Ladies has had a long and fruitful relationship over the years, and it’s great to be able to welcome staff and players back to the Home of Football. This has always been a tough fixture and this season will be no different. Derby have got off to a flyer and find

themselves competing right at the top of the table. They’ve recruited well in the offseason bringing in Jodie Redgrave and Monique Watson who we know a lot about, along with Steph Smith who I ’ve had the pleasure of working with at Huddersfield Town. For us, we’re looking to build on Sunday’s performance against Stoke City where the whole squad pitched in and did their bit for the cause – we are going to need more of

that moving forward. It would’ve been easy for everybody to approach Sunday’s match in a downbeat mood after recent results, but they’re a determined bunch and committed to making progress. It’s great to see the youngsters really improving and setting standards within the group - the likes of Milly Wortley and Jade Butcher, both just 16 years old, are really benefitting from their exposure at this level. The support from the fans has been fantastic in our time of transition which, in turn, helps build the players’ comfort and confidence, so thank you for your continued support and hopefully we can give you more to cheer about in the coming weeks! In S18 Today... Derby County Ladies

of which it has been a member ever since.

Derby County Ladies FC was formed in 1989, but for many years ran entirely separately from the men’s Championship team. Previously, the team had been running as a club playing in Burton on Trent, but became community partners of Derby County and thus assumed the name of the Football League side.

Under the then manager, Steve Hall, the ladies team gradually rose from the East Midlands Regional WFL, through to the Midlands Combination WFL in 2005/06. An official partnership with Derby County was formed in 2008/09 with the ladies team becoming the official female side of the Rams. It was clearly a good omen as the side went on to win the Midland Combination league title that same season, gaining promotion to the FA Women's Premier League Northern Division

The club grew from just an open age section to have girls' teams from U10s up to U16s in addition to the senior ladies first team and reserve team. Hall stepped down after that first season in the top flight, to be replaced by John Townson for the 2010/11 season, but it proved to be a rollercoaster ride for the Rams with some excellent results against the top teams, but some disappointing defeats to teams beneath them, and yet they finished in a very creditable fifth place. In spite of some quality signings in the shape of Precious Hamilton (Doncaster Rovers Belles) and Catherine Lawson (Nottingham Forest) for 2011/12, Townson received an offer from Accrington Stanley’s Academy which he accepted and John Bennett was appointed as manager. A decent season saw the team finish fifth once again, but Derby were to flirt with relegation the following season, finishing one place off the foot of the table, and only avoiding the drop due to just one team being relegated that season. In 2013/14, on the back of a failed FA WSL application, the club’s committee decided to look towards a more commercially and business focused model, appointing Duncan Gibb, an experienced Commercial Manager within the leisure and sport industry, as its Chief Executive. Gibb was successful in pulling in commercial partners and raising the profile of the ladies significantly, a role he still occupies.

The season proved to be John Bennett's last as manager (for the time being) and he guided the club to a respectable seventh place finish, and win the Derbyshire County Cup for a third consecutive year beating Sandi acre Town 6–2 in the final. Jenny Sugarman took over a brief tenure of the Rams but was dismissed at Christmas 2014 after a string of poor results. Enter Stuart Wilson, former Aston Villa LFC manager, whose impact was immediate and the side embarked on a fine sequence of results that saw them not only avoid relegation, but secure a top half finish. In 2015/16, Derby continued where they had left off the previous season, topping the table going into December, but the club’s form plummeted after that leading to early exits in both the FA and League Cups and a seventh place finish in the league. With targets of a run in at least one of the cups and a top five finish agreed at the start of the season, manager Stuart Wilson and his assistant Neil Wilson left the club with three games remaining. The following season, long-serving player Sam Griffiths, also a UEFA ‘A’ License Coach, was appointed to the role of Director of Football and, in addition, John Bennett returned for his second spell as manager. Pre-season targets of a top five finish and a run in one of the cups were realized, as the club equaled its highest ever league position following a final day victory over Nottingham Forest to finish fifth in spite of a string of injuries throughout the season. The team also reached the third round of the FA Cup, losing to Nottingham Forest by 1-0. In 2017/18, the club finished a mediocre seventh in the FA Women's Premier Northern Division, a poor season by the Ewe Rams standard with the club also dumped out of both Cup competitions by lower league opposition. John Bennett announced towards the end of the season that he would step down from the manager's position at the end of the campaign, ending his long association with the club. Sam Griffiths was appointed manager for the new season and set out on a spree of new signings. Pre-season optimism for an improved campaign has proved not misplaced as the Rams are as yet unbeaten in all competitions.

OnesCounty To Watch Derby Ladies 2. Amy Sims Defender Played: 28, Clean sheets: 6, Goals: 2 Defender Amy Sims joined Derby County for the 2017/18 season, signing from Notts County where she was part of its talented WSL development squad before the club announced it would no longer be supporting women’s football. The 19-year was the stand out player of the season for the Ewe Rams last term, fully deserving the club’s Player of the Year accolade at the end of the season awards night. An energetic and tenacious defender who enjoys getting forward to join in an attack, Sims has many admirers due to her consistency and work rate, and she will be a vital part of Derby’s success this season and has a bright future ahead of her. 8. Steph Smith Midfield Played: 8, Goals: 3 Described by manager Sam Griffiths as “the player we’ve been missing for a number of years”, Steph Smith signed for Derby this summer from Coventry United where she has spent the past two seasons playing the FA WPL Southern Division. Smith also spent two seasons at Nottingham Forest where she was part of the side that finished runners up in the Northern Division to Sheffield FC in 2012/13. An athletic and hard-working central midfielder who is the perfect link between defence, Smith is an experienced and intelligent all-rounder, and is a great addition to the Derby squad this season. 10. Jodie Redgrave Forward Played: 8, Goals: 4 Another new signing for Derby this season, Jodie Redgrave is a striker who knows where the back of the net is for sure. She enjoyed a superb season with Brighouse Town last term which saw her bag 30 times for her team, winning her the top scorer award in Northern Division 1, including two goals in two matches against Derby County last season which saw Brighouse knock the Rams out of both League Cup and FA Cup competitions. In three seasons at Brighouse, Redgrave netted an incredible total of 92 goals for the team she latterly captained. Although a step up for the 25-year old, no-one has any doubts that Redgrave will make her mark on the Northern Premier Division and any side will have their work cut out to stop her.

FA Women’s National League Week 7 Review

Week 1 Review

The first league postponement of the season fell at Nottingham Forest with the pitch at Carlton Town failing an inspection, but there was plenty of other Northern Premier Division action: Fylde 3-1 Derby County Fylde inflicted Derby County’s first defeat of the season to secure their third win of the week and climb up to sixth in the table. The home team that opened the scoring on 11 minutes after Hollinshead found space on the left to send a low cross into 6yard box, allowing Sophie Charlton a simple tap-in past Derby goalkeeper Sarah Morgan. Derby became sloppy in possession and allowed Fylde to gain the advantage in the game without creating a clear cut chance. On the stroke of half-time, Fylde doubled their advantage when a mistake inside the box allowed Olivia Wild space to sneak ahead of her marker and fire into the roof of the net. After the break, the visitors began to find a foothold in the game, but could not create many clear sights of goal - Jodie Redgrave’s 25-yard effort smacking against the bar the only Ewe Rams’ effort of note. But with 15 minutes to go, a ball over the top found Andi Bell who chipped the on-rushing Fylde goalkeeper to give Derby a lifeline. As Derby pushed for an equaliser, gaps opened up at the back and they were punished in the final few moments when goalkeeper Morgan mis-controlled a ball on the edge of her box, and Hollinshead (pictured) capped another superb individual performance with a goal to give maximum points to Fylde and earn her a fifth Player of the Match vote this season. Guiseley Vixens 1-4 Doncaster Rovers Belles Four goals from three different goal scorers away to Guiseley Vixens gave Doncaster Rovers Belles a much-deserved first win of the season. Belles had been made to regret individual defensive errors in their recent match against Nottingham Forest, and rue missed chances in attack against Hull City, but things finally came together to give Zoey Shaw’s side a 4-1 win. Zoe Belding put Doncaster ahead on 25 minutes, going clean through on goal off a ball over the top, and finishing superbly past former Belles keeper Bethan Davies. Guiseley had an effort ruled out for offside seven minutes later, but when Liv Auker found the net for a second time on 50 minutes, the equaliser stood. But Belles hit back when Belding doubled her tally to fire the visitors back ahead on 67 minutes, smashing a halfcleared cross into the top corner from the edge of the box. Rovers captain Izzy Whittle made it 3-1 eight minutes later, rising in the six yard box to convert a wonderful Sheldon Ashton cross, before Chloe Bethell rounded off the scoring with seconds remaining on the clock, producing an unbelievable finish at the end of a devastating counter-attack. Middlesbrough 1-2 Blackburn Rovers Captain Lynda Shepherd’s late goal was enough for table toppers Blackburn Rovers to take all three points against Middlesbrough at Bedford Terrace on Sunday afternoon. Both teams hit the woodwork through Jess Holbrook and Rebecca Bass, with Rovers’ new signing, Danielle Gibbons, making two great saves to deny ‘Boro. The away side piled on the pressure in the closing stages of the first half with Flint’s left-footed strike tipped over the bar by Laura Wareham. And it was the Blues’ forward who broke the deadlock straight after the restart as Natasha Flint (pictured) made no mistake from the edge of the box off Lauren Davies’ square ball. Out of nothing, though, Middlesbrough levelled when Anna Birtwhistle swung in a free-kick from just inside Rovers' half that bounced over Gibbons and into the roof of the net. In an end-toend match, the hosts could have snatched a second but for a brilliant last ditch tackle from Kayleigh McDonald to deny the Teessiders a free shot on goal. Instead, it was the visitors who would bag the winner with just under five minutes remaining when Shepherd headed home from a corner for a dramatic finish to this tight encounter. Hull City 2-4 Sunderland Sunderland recovered from going behind to an early goal at Hull City to record a sixth win of the season and climb into second place in the Northern Premier Division. The hosts were ahead on four minutes as Hope Knight’s shot took a wicked deflection off Louise Griffiths and ended up in the back of the Sunderland net. It took less than 20 minutes for Sunderland to get back on terms as Bridget Galloway (pictured) netted from close range after a good cross from Emily Hutchinson. In spite of pressure from the Black Cats in the closing stages of the first half, they could not find the breakthrough they deserved.

But that changed in the second when Keira Ramshaw scored her eighth goal of the season just five minutes after the restart. Hutchinson grabbed a goal of her own just a few minutes later, but things became interesting again when Knight reacted quickest to convert the rebound after a long range shot from Hull hit the bar. Although Sunderland never looked like conceding again, Georgia Gibson made sure of the points with a fourth goal just six minutes before time. FA Plate ThisWNL Weekend’s Fixtures It’s the second round of the FA WNL Plate this Sunday with Sheffield FC playing its first fixture in the competition after receiving a first round bye. The Plate is for all the first-round losers in the FA WNL Cup, and it’s the first time Sheffield FC has been in competition. Other Northern Premier division clubs also in action in the Plate are as follows

Sheffield FC face a long trip to the seaside to take on Northern Division 1 side Morecambe. It’s new territory for Club as the two teams have never met before. Morecambe have not had the best of starts to the 2018/19 season and are currently tenth in the table with a win and a draw from their opening seven matches. However, Sunday saw them draw 3-3 with one of the best sides in that division, Liverpool Feds, fighting back from 3-1 down and, with several very good ex-Preston North End players in their ranks, Sheffield will need to be wary of their opponents if they are to progress. For fans wishing to travel to the game, the action kicks off at 2pm, Sunday 14 October, at Lancashire & Morecambe College, LA1 2TY. All other Northern Premier teams have also been drawn against division 1 opponents which, on paper at least, should all go the way of the higher ranked teams. Doncaster Rovers Belles (pictured) will be on cloud nine after a first win of the season at the week-end and will be full of confidence against Barnsley who also enjoyed an excellent 5-1 win against Burton Albion on Sunday. Hull City may not have everything their own way at home to Birmingham & West Midlands, but should progress, whilst Middlesbrough should have an easy time away to Solihull Moors. And whilst Bradford City have struggled on and off the field, already parting company with new manager Mark Brier only this past week, the change may breathe life into Bradford who travel to The New Saints. Sheffield FC 2 Stoke City 0 FA Women’s National League North Home of Football, Dronfield Sunday, 7th October 2018 Sheffield FC Ladies ended a run of three straight league defeats by putting in a season’s best performance against Stoke City LFC at the Home of Football stadium. Two quick goals in the final quarter of the game, first from Ellie Hawcroft and the player of the match Lisa Giampalma, earned Sheffield a valuable three points in a 2-0 win. Sheffield started brightly, displaying plenty of energy and intent to limit Stoke to any real time on the ball. Whilst the effort was there, the game lacked much real quality with both sides limiting themselves to hopeful balls and pot shots from range in the early stages.

Sheffield were somewhat fortunate to not fall behind, following a mix-up at the back with only a fine Liz Hobson save at the near post keeping the scores level midway through the first half. The half continued in a similar fashion throughout, and in spite of Sheffield’s best efforts, they struggled to find ways to support Giampalma up top and create any clear-cut opportunities. Similarly Stoke’s normally effective directness failed to massively test the hosts’ defence. Both teams raced out of the blocks in the early stages of the second half, the bitter Derbyshire wind a stark contrast to the heat on the pitch. Stoke attacked first, moving the ball well on the left of Sheffield’s box before Ella Pemberton’s effort crashed off the cross bar. Moments later, it was Hobson who kept the scores level as she brilliantly collected a well struck effort from range. Sheffield’s turn. Minutes after nearly falling behind, Club should have been ahead after a number of quick attacks resulting in efforts from Holly Housley and Ellie Hawcroft, but the best came from a smart movement across the front line, which saw Jess Heald fed through the middle only for her effort to drift agonisingly wide if the upright. The next big chance again fell to Sheffield, an excellent ball infield by Housley found Giampalma who couldn’t adjust in time and could only force a comfortable save from Stacey Wright in the Stoke goal. The half continued in the same manner, each side fashioning half chances and playing well through the thirds, but it would be Sheffield to finally break the deadlock on 73 minutes. A forward ball was brilliantly protected by Giampalma, her strength and pace leaving Stoke’s centre-half sprawled on the floor. Play approached the box, and the forward slid a clever ball across to Hawcroft who applied the finish for her first senior goal. Moments later it was two. Milly Wortley capitalised on some slack Stoke play in the middle of the park, drove forward twisting her opponent into knots and opening up the space for Giampalma to receive the ball who, this time, finished past the on-rushing Wright. Sheffield erupted. As expected, Stoke ramped up their attack making a number of changes that left three or four players high in the last 10 minutes. A number of chances came and went for the visitors, but some excellent defending and solid goalkeeping meant the Potters could not find a way through. After the game, assistant manager Chris Hames summed up his thoughts: “We came into this match knowing that only 100% graft would be enough if we wanted to get anything from it, and I think we really got that today. “There are a number of areas we would expect to see continue to improve, but the intent to play some good football was there. You don’t get a result like this, and a clean sheet, without putting everything into the game, as the players did just that today. “The crowd was fantastic today: the noise when we scored from everyone was great to hear, and really helped us achieve this result, and I know was really appreciated by the whole team. “We have to use this feeling, the emotion of winning, and the qualities we do have, to continue to put together a good season, and that starts again on Thursday night in what will be another tough game against Derby County.” Photos courtesy of Paula Johnson Sheffield FC v Derby County Ladies FA WNL Northern Premier 11.10.18

Sheffield FC 1 Worksop Town 3 S&HCFA Senior Cup Round 2 Home of Football, Dronfield Tuesday, 9th October 2018

A patched up Men’s First Team found themselves eliminated from the Sheffield and Hallamshire Senior Cup, as Worksop Town took full advantage to run out 3-1 winners on a balmy night at Dronfield, but it wasn’t without controversy. Sheffield took the lead on 14 minutes, following a good drive on the left from Charlie Wakefield, one that left keeper Andrew Francis helpless. The main pre-match talking point was the fact that Club had no fit goalkeeper available, so as has been done before, up stepped long serving winger Matt Roney to take his place between the sticks. The first 25 minutes were fairly uneventful for Roney, however with the first attempt on goal Worksop were level, as Tomas Poole took advantage of poor positional play to catch the keeper unawares with a 25-yard drive from the right flank. Worse was to come two minutes later, as a Steve Woolley free-kick (pictured) was only palmed out by Roney, with exClubbie Max Pemberton running in and heading home from close range. Early in the second half Club went close to levelling, with Ehsan Mohammed making great contact with a strike from 30 yards, the shot beating Francis but skidded inches wide of the post. Moments later they went closer still; Mohammed’s corner was met by the head of Adam Chapman, with Michael Trench heading off the line. Worksop had the chance to make the game safe, after Poole was set free on the right, with the end shot flashing across the face of goal. There was controversy halfway through the half, Mitchell Dunne was hauled down in the area seconds before being able to tap into the empty goal, however the referee waved play away to the amazement of players on both sides. Worksop capitalised on this seconds after, as Liam Royles made space on the right, before hitting a low drive beyond Roney to make it 3-1. Kyle Jordan should have made the score more convincing, after finding himself clear in space and one-on-one with Roney, took the ball round and hit the upright. Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

ww.sheffieldfc.com

Sheffield FC Ladies Sheffield FC Ladies was formed in 2003 when previous team Norton Ladies affiliated with the oldest football club in the world, Sheffield FC. The Club started life in Division 1 East of the Yorkshire & Humberside Regional WFL, the bottom level of the women’s pyramid of football at the time, which became the North East Regional WFL in 2005/06. Having finished third, then runners up for two successive seasons, Sheffield finally won their first league title in 2007/08, and within the space of two more seasons, were promoted into the Northern Combination WFL, which they won at the first attempt in 2010/11. Sheffield’s debut season at FA Women’s Premier League level could hardly have gone much better as Sheffield finished the year as Northern Division runners up behind eventual champions Manchester City. The team picked up silverware for the third season running, courtesy of a very first win in the Sheffield & Hallamshire Women’s Challenge Cup. Sheffield went one better in the league in 2012/13 as they lifted the FA WPL Northern Division title for the very first time, losing just one league match in total and finishing nine points clear of Nottingham Forest. They also repeated their success in the S&H Women’s Challenge Cup, beating Rotherham United 6-0 in the final. With promotion to the FA Women’s Super League not possible, Sheffield were forced to defend their FA WPL Northern Division crown in 2013/14, which they managed to do with five matches to go, ultimately finishing 15 points clear of runners up Preston North End. They added a third successive S&H Women’s Challenge Cup, but the highlight of the season was winning the FA Women’s Premier League Cup by beating Cardiff City 6-2 in the final, crowning off an historic treble trophy winning season.

History 2003-2018 In 2014/15, the first team missed out on a second successive FA WPL Cup losing on penalties in the final to Charlton Athletic after a 0-0 draw, but the Sheffield & Hallamshire Women’s Challenge Cup was won for a fourth year running. The Club enjoyed a best ever run in the FA Women’s Cup by reaching the Fifth Round. Sheffield FC won a third successive FA WPL Northern Division title, to secure a place in a first ever Championship Play Off Final in which an injury time winner saw Sheffield beat Portsmouth to become the first club to gain promotion on merit to the top flight of the game: the FA Women’s Super League. Under new first team manager Zoe Johnson, Sheffield secured a respectable fifth place finish in their debut FA WSL season and reached the quarter-finals of the Continental Tyres. The development team finished as runners up in both the FA WSL Northern Division and the League Cup, losing 2-1 in extra time to Arsenal. The 2017 Spring Series was less of a success for Sheffield as they finished one place off the bottom in ninth, and were unlucky to go out of the FA Women’s Cup at the fourth round stage to a controversial penalty in a 1-0 defeat to Doncaster Rovers Belles. But the team kick started again for the 2017/18 season having change back to a winter season, with Sheffield once again finishing top half in fifth place, beating their previous points total. With the FA’s continued agenda to drive the financial burden of clubs competing at Tier 2 up and up, Sheffield were forced to make the incredibly difficult decision to withdraw from the newly constituted FA Women’s Championship before the 2018/19 season, and thus begin this season in the new FA Women’s National League
