Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

Welcome... To The Home of Football

ww.sheffieldfc.com

Hello and welcome to Dronfield for today’s Evo-Stik East game between Sheffield FC and Morpeth Town.

It seems ages since our last league game at Carlton, and to be honest it has given us a bit of time to recuperate from the mounting injury list we seem to have been gathering. The Senior Cup game was an example of the situation we were in, having to use Roons in goal is far from ideal, and not one we want to find ourselves in again. Today’s visitors Morpeth are the form team at the moment, they are leading the division with a clear gap to second spot, so we know it is going to be a tough game. We know though that they can be beaten, as Brighouse managed to win up at theirs in the FA Trophy on Saturday, so if we are on our game we can get something tonight. Get behind the team, and make some noise, your support can make all the difference. Enjoy the game

Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

In S18 Today...

Morpeth Town

ww.sheffieldfc.com

Morpeth Town Football Club was established in 1894, as an amalgamation of the Morpeth United and Morpeth FC teams. The initially played at Stobhill Cricket Field, before moving to Storey Park in the 1950s and then to Craik Park, their current home, in 1994.

The joined the Northern Alliance in 1936 and finished as runners-up in 1938, going on to with the League Cup the following year, also ending as runners-up, in the wartime North Division in 1940. After the league resumed in earnest after the war the side struggled, finishing bottom in 3 of 3 seasons in the early 1950s, but they recovered to achieve highest finishes of runners-up in each of the following decades. In 1984 they were crowned Northern Alliance Champions, finished 2nd the following season and won the League Cup the next year. 1994 was a successful year as it saw the side win the Northern Alliance, to clinch promotion to the Northern League, lift the League Cup and move to a new ground. The settled quickly at the higher level and won Division 2 of the Northern League in 1996 to seal another promotion, where they finished a creditable 6th and settled into a run of mid-table finishes. In 1998/99 they went all the way to the final qualifying round of the FA Cup, only losing by a single goal to a rising Burton Albion. Results saw a slump at the start of the 21st century but they moved back up the table, finishing 6th again in 2006 and beating Blyth Spartans to win the Northumberland Senior Cup in 2007. With pressures off the field growing the side were relegated in 2010, before finishing bottom of Division 2. Despite coming close to extinction Morpeth stabilised and fought back, being promoted in 2013 and reaching the Quarter Finals of the FA Vase in 2014. The recovery continued to pick up pace with improving league fortunes and 2015/16 seeing the Highwaymen go all the way in the FA Vase, beating Hereford 4-1 in the Wembley Final. In the last 2 seasons Town have ended as runners-up in the Northern League, with the latter seeing the take promotion to the NPL, where we meet today in this Division 1 East fixture. If there were any doubts about their ability to cope at the higher level, they were dispelled over the opening months. Although they lost their opening league fixture at Belper they recovered to beat Brighouse and Tadcaster to move up the standings. In addition, they thrashed Goole 5-1 in the FA Cup and then beat Marske to reach the 1st Qualifying Round. Despite exiting the FA Cup, losing to Ashton after a replay, the league points kept coming: they beat Wisbech 5-2 before winning at Stamford and beating Carlton and Ossett United at home. In between times they knocked in 4 goals at South Shields to claim a League Cup victory. August ended with a big 4-0 win away to Spalding and their title challenge has continued with 4 points picked up from tricky looking games against Lincoln and Pontefract so far this month. On Saturday they lost 3-4 against Brighouse Town away from NPL action, in the FA Trophy.

It all means that tonight’s opponents arrive here with just one NPL defeat, the meanest defence in the division, with only 6 goals conceded, and sitting 6 point clear at the top of the table. Impressive statistics and surely Club’s toughest test of the season so far. Sheffield FC v Morpeth Town Evo-Stik League East Division - 16.10.18

Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

ww.sheffieldfc.com

Dan Lowson - Goalkeeper An experienced keeper in the Evo-Stik League, Dan has featured for Spennymoor Town most recently, with stints at Blyth Spartans, Alfreton and Luton Town among others. After six games spent on loan at Craik Park last season, he signed permanently during the summer. Graeme Pickering - Goalkeeper After a successful time at Park Vale Academy, as a goalkeeping coach, Graeme will be taking on a duel role at the club as a coach and also number two to Lowson. Dimitris Tsapalos - Goalkeeper The Greek goalkeeper spent time on trial with the club during pre-season and impressed sufficiently to earn a spot in The Highwaymen squad. Keen for minutes on the pitch, Tsapalos may well head out on loan. Danny Carson - Defender Danny is a recent addition to the squad having played for South Shields for the first half of last season and also when they won the Northern League Division Two title. He scooped a host of end of season club awards thanks to a string of superb performances. Jeff Henderson - Defender A warrior of a centre-back, Henderson’s most successful time came when winning League and Cup glory at Sligo Rovers. He also played in the Europa League and Champions League while in Ireland before returning to his native north east. He joined Town from Stobswood, where he had been regaining his fitness following injury. Stephen Forster - Defender Stephen is an electric full-back, who has made the transition from winger to defender during the course of the 2015-16 season. He has been one of the clubs most consistent performers. Chris Reid - Defender Chris signed for the club from Whitley Bay during the 2015-16 season, and has proved to be an influential member of the squad. He made over 200 appearances for the four-time FA Vase winners, and has excelled at Craik Park. Michael Turner - Defender Michael signed for the Highwaymen and has gone from strength to strength, making 102 appearances by the end of last season. He is a solid and no-nonsense defender, who likes to get forward with his aerial presence a handy feature for a left-back. Chris McDonald - Defender McDonald signed from Berwick Rangers midway through last season and has settled quickly into life at Craik Park. A spritely left-back, he covers the ground quickly and is able to provide a useful attacking outlet down the flank. Iulian Petrache - Defender The towering centre-half is an imposing presence at the heart of the defence, bringing aerial prowess and a tremendous reading of the game. After spells at South Shields and Team Northumbria, Petrache joined the Highwaymen. Keith Graydon - Midfield Rasher is well known in North East football, having played for a number of sides including Sunderland and Gateshead. He’s the heartbeat of the team and has a major influence in midfield, with the Irishman using one of our other stars – Sean Taylor – to clean his boots during their time at the Black Cats.

Sam Hodgson - Midfield A versatile member of the squad, Sam signed for The Highwaymen from Shildon in the Summer of 2018. Able to play across the back four, he also provides a calm and composed figure in the centre of midfield, where he has impressed during pre-season. Jordan Fry - Midfield Jordan is the engine room of the Morpeth side, providing a constant source of energy when his side seek to regain possession. Always doing the simple things correctly, Fry may not get the headlines but he is the first name on the team-sheet for many at the club. One of the longest serving members of the squad. Wayne Phillips - Midfield Wayne signed for the club from South Shields, where he won four trophies, including the FA Vase at Wembley Stadium. He is a vastly experienced winger, who has also won the Vase with Spennymoor Town. Ben Sayer - Midfield Ben joined the club during the 2014-15 season, and is a hard-working player with a superb range of passing. He has a huge creative influence on the side and was named Northern League Player of the Year in 2017. Stephen Turnbull - Midfield Stephen was a big name mid-season signing during the previous campaign. After joining in October, following an extended spell at Blyth Spartans, the hugely talented midfielder has settled quickly, proving instrumental in the middle of the park. David Carson - Midfield David is a high quality, ball playing midfielder with a no nonsense approach to protecting his back four. After starting at Newcastle and Sunderland, Carson was captain of Blackburn Under-21s before switching to South Shields and Whitby. Thomas Potter - Midfield Tom joined from Whitley Bay at the start of the season and has made a promising start to life at Craik Park. Lightning quick down the flank, the forward is direct and has the skills to go past any full-back. Adam Burnicle - Forward Following his summer switch from Shildon, Adam is keen to make his mark on the Morpeth Town side. A direct and lightening quick striker, he has terrorised many Northern League defences and will be keen to do similar in Evo-Stik East this season. Liam Henderson - Forward Liam is a prolific centre-forward that signed for the club from Spennymoor Town. He has finished the club’s top-scorer for the last two season and will, no doubt, be up there challenging for the league’s golden boot again, with his robust style of play a constant thorn in the side of opponents. Sean Taylor - Forward There is no better first touch in football! Taylor was part of Sunderland’s Academy after choosing the Black Cats over Manchester United and Newcastle United. The wide man has pace, trickery and is an excellent finisher. He was named third best player in the Northern League last season and has 110 goals to date. Joe Walton - Forward Joe, who won the FA Vase with Spennymoor Town, joined from Washington last season and the winger has vast experience in the Northern League. He can play in various positions but will best be remembered nationally for a sensational goal against Marske United which went viral. Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

ww.sheffieldfc.com

Normally here we look at the record of games between the clubs, but today is the first meeting between the sides so there’s not much to look back on! One thing that has been a talking point so far this season though is the number of goals we have seen. In the NPL we have seen the ball hit the back of the net 49 times in just 9 games. You can also add in another 26 in 5 cup matches and that’s a total of 75. The 8 in the FA Trophy loss at Prescot, when this game was originally scheduled to be played, made it 66 goals in 11, an incredible average of 6-per-game! So, has there ever been a better run in our history? Going back as far as the start of the Northern Counties East League in 1982 the answer is no! The previous record for an 11-game run was 57 goals, which has happened twice. In the 1995/96 season Club scored 24 and conceded 33, ending with a trio of defeats against Thackley, Sutton Town and Hatfield Main where they leaked 17 goals. From late 2010 and into 2011 we also saw the ball hit the net 57 times, the run starting with an 8-1 thrashing of AFC Emley in the Sheffield & Hallamshire FA Cup. Sheffield didn’t actually concede more than 4 in a single game, overall winning 6 and losing 5, finishing the sequence by winning 5-2 away to Goole. Man of the match Brian Cusworth scored 2 of the goals at Goole, helping himself to 7 in the 11 games.

History Corner

With Andy Dixon

To find the real records though we need to go way back, with several runs of 11 fixtures seeing over 80 goals scored in total! A 7-5 win against Collegiate in 1883 made it 82 goals in a run, including some big defeats against Notts County (2-8), Nottingham Forest (1-9) and Aston Villa (014) as the rise of professionalism in the game saw Club being left behind by the bigger sides. 81 goals in 11 in 1899 began with a crushing loss, 1-11, against Sheffield United Reserves, although there was a huge win in the run too as Moses Bruster and Harry Potts both hit a hat-trick in Sheffield’s 11-0 Yorkshire League win over Huddersfield. A couple of heavy defeats boosted the total of 82 in the run which ended in October 1911 when Club lost 0-15 against Sheffield United Reserves in the Wharncliffe Charity Cup. That defeat remains Sheffield FC’s record loss and will hopefully never be beaten! Wartime games tended to see a lot of goals scored: Club lost 0-10 to the Royal Army Service Corps in November 1940 and by the time Henry Moseley struck 4 times, in an 11-2 win against an RAF Balloon Barrage XI, the following March there had been 85 goals scored in 11 matches. But what are the biggest of the big 11-game runs? Well, 1932 eclipses the totals so far with Henry Moseley again prolific – scoring 13 times in 11. Amazingly he wasn’t the highest scorer in the run as his strike partner Horace Cooper netted a staggering 19! The series started with an 8-2 victory against Manchester University, included an amazing 10-6 win against Tinsley Amateurs and ended with the 7 goals scored as the side lost to Sheffield Municipal Officers making it a total of 99. But that’s still not the record that we’ve found as 1929 witnessed a figure of 102 goals in an 11-game run from the start of the year! 7-1 and 13-1 wins were followed by a 5-7 loss and then a boring run of just 18 goals in the next 3 fixtures. A good 12-3 success against Old Almondburians picked up the average again before another 35 strikes were added in the final 4 games of the run. Although they weren’t the biggest scorers in the run, A. Dunn & S. Kirkup both hit double figures, the spell did see the first goals in Sheffield FC colours for both Cooper and Moseley. By the time the strike duo had both played their last games they had hit a total of 273 goals in just over 300 games between them! Of course, we couldn’t talk about the number of goals scored without mentioning our greatest ever striker, Geoff Robinson. During his time the 1951/52 season saw a run of 11 games with a total of 75 scored, of which Geoff scored 33. During that spell he scored in 8 consecutive games and hit 10 in a 14-1 victory over South Kirkby Colliery, a Yorkshire League record. As for the most boring run? The answer since the formation of the NCEL in ’82 is just 16 goals near the start of the 1989/90 season, although with 6 wins and just 2 losses it was at least a successful, it not entertaining, sequence. Going way back a run between December 1863 and March 1865 saw Sheffield FC not concede a single goal and score just 3! By way of small consolation those in attendance did see a grand total of 7 rouges at least! Whilst not exciting the run does end with a notable point of history – a 1-0 victory away to Notts which was the first ever game between clubs from different towns! Sheffield FC 1 Worksop Town 3 S&HCFA Senior Cup Round Two Tuesday 09/10/18 Attendance: 291 A patched up Club outfit found themselves eliminated from the Sheffield and Hallamshire Senior Cup, as Worksop Town took full advantage to run out 3-1 winners on a balmy night at Dronfield, but it wasn’t without controversy. Despite Sheffield taking an early lead through Charlie Wakefield, Worksop fought back to overturn the tie, with goals from ex-SFC players Max

Pemberton and Liam Royles, along with another from Tomas Poole. It was a tight opening to the game, with the home side doing most of the pressing, and keeping Worksop on the back foot. Sheffield eventually took the lead on 14 minutes, following a good low drive on the left from Charlie Wakefield, one that left keeper Andrew Francis helpless. The main pre-match talking point was the fact that Club had no fit goalkeeper available, so as has been done before, up stepped long serving winger Matt Roney to take his place between

the sticks. The first 25 minutes were fairly uneventful for Roney, however with the first attempt on goal Worksop were level, as Tomas Poole took advantage of poor positional play to catch the keeper unawares with a 25-yard drive from the right flank. Worse was to come two minutes later, as a Steve Woolley free-kick (pictured) was

only palmed out by Roney, with exClubbie Max Pemberton running in and heading home from close range. Sheffield FC v Morpeth Town Evo-Stik League East Division - 16.10.18

Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

ww.sheffieldfc.com

Early in the second half Club went close to levelling, with Ehsan Mohammed making great contact with a strike from 30 yards, the shot beating Francis but skidded inches wide of the post. Moments later they went closer still; Mohammed’s corner was met by the head of Adam Chapman, with Michael Trench heading off the line. Worksop had the chance to make the game safe, after Poole was set free on the right and battled his way past Alfie Eagle and Jamie Yates, with the end shot flashing across the face of goal. There was controversy halfway through the half, FC were denied a blatant penalty as Mitchell Dunne darted into the box and was about to slide home the leveller until he was impeded by last ditch defending by Taylor. To the amazement of everyone in the ground, who clearly saw it was a penalty apart from the linesman and the referee the appeal was waved away.

Worksop capitalised on this seconds after, as Liam Royles made space on the right, before hitting a low drive beyond Roney to make it 3-1. Kyle Jordan should have made the score more convincing, after finding himself clear in space and one-on-one with Roney, took the ball round and hit the upright with his curling shot.

Either way it made no difference to the outcome, as seconds later the referee blew to end Sheffield’s chances in yet another cup

Trophy Review With Steve Whitney

ww.sheffieldfc.com

In the Buildbase FA Trophy Preliminary Round on Saturday Canvey Island, winners in 2001 and runners-up in 2004 won through, but Grays Athletic, winners in 2005 and 2006 are out, while1990 runners-Up Leek Town face a replay.

A late Frankie Merrifield brace in the final seven minutes saw Bostik League North Canvey beat Bostik South East side Cray Wanderers at the Frost Financial Stadium. But their league rivals Grays bowed out to Cray's league rivals Sevenoaks Town 4-2 at Parkside. The Essex hosts led 2-0 with a Joao Carlos brace inside 15 minutes, but a Frankie Sawyer hat -trick in the second half and once from Alec Fiddes took the Kent side through. Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Division One West Leek were held to a 0-0 draw at Harrison Park by NPL Division One East side Loughborough Dynamo. There are few 'shocks' in this round as teams are from the same level, but Brighouse Town's 4-3 win at NPL Division One East leaders Morpeth Town – playing in their first Trophy competition - could be construed as one. Morpeth led 2-1 at the break through Iulian Petrache and a Liam Henderson penalty – Zeph Thomas replying. A Mike Turner own goal just after the break pulled the Yorkshire side back on terms and then Aaron Martin took them in front after 64 minutes, only for Henderson's second spotkick to restore parity 5 minutes later. But a second for Martin 6 minutes from time won it for Brighouse. There were good wins for several others, with Brighouse's Yorkshire and league rivals Ossett United enjoying a 6-0 battering of NPL Division One West visitors Colwyn Bay at Ingfield in which Adam Priestley netted a hat-trick and Aidan Chippendale, Marcus Day and Karl Jones singles. Bay's league rivals Prescot Cables fell only one goal short of Ossett at Valerie Park against another NPL Division One West outfit Kendal Town. James Edgar bagged a brace for Cables, Chris Almond, Mike Monaghan and Jordan Southworth singles – Steve Yawson netting a consolation for the Mintcakes. NPL Division One East side Cleethorpes Town enjoyed a good best-of-five win at NPL Division One West high-flyers Radcliffe, whose Ben Wharton bagged a brace but was outgunned by Brody Robertson's (right) hat-trick for the Owls. Carlton Town hit four away from home in the all-NPL Division One East tie at Spalding United, thanks to an Aaron Opoku hat-trick. Goals from Matt Sparrow and a Tom Waumsley brace saw Yaxley through 3-2 at Southern Division One Central highflying rivals Corby Town. Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

Awaydays Spalding United

ww.sheffieldfc.com

Sir Halley Stewart Field Winfrey Avenue Spalding Lincolnshire PE11 1DA Telephone: 01775 713328 th Saturday 20 October 2018 (KO 3:00)

By Car

A long one this - whichever way you are getting here. Head south on the A1, going as far as the Colsterworth junction, exiting and heading east along the A151 towards and through Bourne. Continue on towards Spalding town centre, turning left at the “Station Gates” public house, and immediately right at the Sainsbury’s Supermarket, and left into Winfrey Avenue. Parking is a bit of a dodgy affair, free-parking is available a short walk away from the ground if you can find it, but the majority choose the Pay and Display across from the main gates. It costs about £1.50 for the length of the game.

From Home of Football: 2 hours. From Sheffield Centre: 2 hours 10 mins*

By Public Transport Nearest Station: Spalding ¼m. Out of station, cross road and walk through car park, then left into Winfrey Avenue and ground is on right.

What to Expect It’s a lovely old ground this one. There are a plethora of portacabins scattered about, with the main feature being the main stand (right). The main stand is steep, has a double staircase and offers a panoramic view of the town. Other than that it is tree lined and backs onto terraced housing. There are some steps behind the far goal, and flat standing elsewhere. For refreshments there is the clubhouse to your left as you come in, and if it is still there, a very popular chip bar next to it. Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

Awaydays Frickley Athletic

ww.sheffieldfc.com

Westfield Lane, South Elmsall, Pontefract, West Yorkshire, WF9 2EQ Telephone: 01977 642 460 rd Tuesday 23 October 2018 (KO 7:45)

By Car The best way is to approach this from the M18 and A1 - taking junction 38. From the A1 turn off onto the A638, towards Wakefield. At the second roundabout turn left onto the B6474 towards South Elmsall. Turn left at the traffic lights and then turn right at the Tjunction to stay on the B6474. Go over the railway line and turn right at the bottom of the road and then immediately left up Westfield Lane. The ground is signposted on the left after about ½ mile. Get there early and there is parking available pretty close to the ground, leave it too late (or if the big numbers turn up) then I'm afraid it is street parking around the warren of roads around Westfield Lane.

From Home of Football : 45 mins - From Sheffield Centre: 1 hour *

By Public Transport Station: South Elmsall ½m. Up Station Approach and Station Road, right into Barnsley Road, left into Westfield Lane, and entrance to ground is on left; ground is beyond cricket ground. (The first football ground you come to is not the one; continue past Oxford Street.)

What to Expect This is what you might call a "traditional" nonleague ground - none of your new builds here! Despite its lived in look, it is one of my favourites. The ground is dominated by the elevated main stand and the iconic slag heap opposite! There are plenty of good viewing points, with covered standing along the far touchline, behind both goals are areas of uncovered terracing. All mod-cons are catered for here - there is a nice little clubhouse that opens before and after the game, a decent club shop for all you souvenir hunters, and food available from the snack bar which opens thirty minutes before the game. Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

Around the Club Disability Team

ww.sheffieldfc.com

Sheffield FC Disability Team is proud to reveal their new kit, sponsored by some of the city’s boldest businesses; Drop Dead clothing, Peter & Paul design agency, Steeze record and clothing label, and Warp Films. Formed in 2015, Sheffield FC Disability Team continues the ethos of the wider club, promoting integrity, respect and community by encouraging participation in football training sessions every Saturday. Recognising the social and physical benefits of playing regular football, specialised coaches from Coach 2 Include run the sessions, helping players to develop their coordination and communication skills. With both adult and children teams, Sheffield FCDT is open to all, regardless of ability or disability. Current players have a range of conditions, including ADHD, amputee, asthma, autism, cerebral palsy, deafness, dyspraxia, epilepsy, learning difficulties and Tourette syndrome. The league is open to anyone who struggles to play in mainstream football; it’s about inclusion, not results, and every single player is guaranteed game time.

That’s not to say the team hasn’t enjoyed their share of success. They currently have two teams in the Sheffield Hallam FA Junior League and in 2015/16, the Under 16 team made the finals of the FA People’s Cup after winning their way through local and regional rounds. The Under 12 team also won the Doncaster 7-a -side tournament in 2018. Created in the 2017/18 season, the Adult Disability Team are registered to play in the South Yorkshire Ability Counts League, with many of the players having progressed through the junior teams up into the adult league. In their first season, the team finished third in the Championship League and progressed to the last four of the Regional FA People’s Trophy. The choice of independent sponsors for this year’s kit reflects the team’s unique outlook. Steeze, a clothing and record label founded by BBC Radio 1 DJ Toddla T, is defined as a “distinctive and attractive or impressive way of doing things”, and Warp Films’ productions are consistently acclaimed for providing a distinct window on the world. Peter & Paul are a design agency that pride themselves on communicating a brand’s difference through creative ideas, while Drop Dead clothing, founded by Bring Me The Horizon’s Oli Sykes, embodies the alternative and celebrates the unconventional. Sheffield FCDT Under 12 coach Peter Donohoe said: “We’ve got four uniquely Sheffield independent businesses across music, fashion, design and film – they’re all maverick creatives doing their own thing, proud Sheffielders, but with an international audience. I think a lot of our kids are unique in many ways and embracing the difference is something that relates strongly back to the sponsors – they are people that have succeeded by doing things differently.” Mark Herbert, joint CEO of Warp Films said: “My son Sam joined the club two years ago and he has loved every minute of it. The training is fun and he’s so pleased being part of the team. It’s inspirational seeing this eclectic mix of kids train and play, so when there was chance to sponsor a kit, I jumped at the opportunity to get my company’s name and logo on the shirts. We make a diverse range of films, looking for heroes in unusual places, so it felt right to be associated with Sheffield FCDT.” If you would like to get involved, or if you have children that may be interested in joining Sheffield FC Disability Team please contact Ruth Wittenburg on 0796 247 1556. Training sessions are every Saturday at Hillsborough College between 11.15am and 12.15pm. Fixtures are played once a month against other local county teams, including Rotherham and Barnsley. Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

Chaplain’s Corner

TCUP

ww.sheffieldfc.com

T-CUP is an acronym referred to by Sir Clive Woodward. He used it as head coach of the England rugby team that won the World Cup in 2003, you can probably remember where you were on that Saturday morning. What does it mean? ‘Thinking Clearly Under Pressure’ is an approach that people use to help train others to deal with pressure type situations in sport and life. Our ability to think and how we perform can be influenced by how we respond to pressure.

Coaches prepare individuals and teams to deal with such difficulties, they create scenarios that, as far as possible, replicate challenging situations. They are then helped to develop skills for staying calm under pressure. I am sure we can all recall situations on the pitch and how players have reacted, its these moments that can shape the game. Looking back, can you remember a situation when you stayed calm, considered the options and chose the route most likely to achieve the best result? Think of the specific situation in the past when you were able to think clearly under pressure. What were the specific things you did to think clearly under pressure and what happened because of taking these steps. Or did it all go ‘pear shaped’ and the referee reached for the red card? What did you learn from that situation and has it helped with other situations since? What would you do differently next time? Pressure situations can come in all forms: life changes, work, family, illness etc. learning to deal with them and make the correct decision even when the pressure is on, is a good skill to learn. On the pitch the team can also use this to good effect, football games change all the time and being able to stay calm means that the players can think clearly under pressure, even if the referee doesn’t agree with us. Maybe you have your own approach to making decisions, if not try adopting the T-CUP method might help, well it helped us win a world cup rugby final. Enjoy the game. Cheers Chaplain Chris Sheffield FC v Morpeth Town Evo-Stik League East Division - 16.10.18

Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

Gav’s Legends Leon Wainman

ww.sheffieldfc.com

Sheffield FC Assistant Manager and a Club Legend in his own right, Gavin Smith, has been catching up with some other legends of previous seasons - this week we have potent front-man Leon Wainman... Gav: What teams did you play for before Sheff Club? Leon: Far too many - was a bit of a traveller trying to find

the most comfortable subs bench to sit on. Gav: How many appearances did you make for Sheff Club, and how many goals did you score? Leon: Not enough !!! Answer to both questions ... Gav: What manager/managers did you play under and what was your relationship like with them? Leon: Dave McCarthy and Lee Walshaw - Macca sold me the dream. I got on with both pretty well despite not playing as often as I’d hoped when signing. Gav: What is your most memorable game playing for Sheff Club, and what is the most memorable of your career? Leon: I enjoyed a fair few. Obviously the whole occasion and atmosphere of the Inter Milan Birthday celebration game was memorable. Macca made it special for a little non league club with the marketing and promotion of the event. We all got a pair of new boots, sponsored tie ups, names on our shirts etc. It was a great a feeling. Especially as we gave a good account of ourselves in the game. Meeting Pelé was great too. I always tell my children that he shook my hand and said “God bless you!” closest I got to a conversation, but not many people can claim to have had that privilege. To say I played against Materazzi and Balotelli was a great hit with the kids I taught at work. Most memorable in my career was winning the (then) UniBond first division championship on the final day of the season for North Ferriby United in 2005. Gav: What was the best goal you scored for Sheff Club? (tell us about it please) Leon: Coming off the bench away at Retford in what was a tough battle for us that night. They were top and we were getting beat 2-1. I came on and got an equaliser which was more memorable as it was with my left peg. Gav: Who was the Best player you played with while at the club and why? Leon: I think Paul Smith was class. He played left back but could get forward and his delivery with his left foot was always on point. I always enjoyed playing when he was at his best. Gav: What were the best and worst grounds you played at during your career and why? Leon: Kendal away was never a great trip - freezing cold on a midweek night and the changing room was dire. Frozen water on the concrete floor and no heater, everyone struggling for room to get changed in a broken toilet ......then you had the pitch to contend with. The best at our level in the league I was playing in for North Ferriby could have been Telford. They had spent quite a bit and the stadium and pitch were class. Gav: Do you ever come down to watch the Sheff Club or follow their results? Leon: I always follow the results as I still have friends in football at the Coach & Horses players, committee, members & fans. I get down when I can or when I get an invite to the charity / testimonial games? Gav: Do you have any lasting memories of the Sheff Club supporters? Leon: The fans behind the goal were always in good spirits with their drumming and singing. There was always the faithful bunch that came home and away too. Trev that did the write ups on the Behind the Flag website was a legend too. The fans made me feel welcome and still do when I do come to games. Gav: Are there any funny moments, dressing room banter, training ground incidents that you remember from your time with the club? Leon: Probably too many that couldn’t be shared...there was always going to be something exciting going on if Karl Colley or Stu Connell we’re in the dressing room or playing. I found it funny when I was playing and Macca brought some of the under 18s through and the were still addressing me as sir because I taught them at school.....Joel Purkiss, Janni Lipka, Dan McKenzie were just a few. Against Inter there was a competition for a fan to win a position on the subs bench.... bloody hilarious when he got called up to go on before me... Cheers Gaffa! Gav: Where did you go when you left Sheff Club, what have you done since? Leon: I went out on loan to Eastwood and then over to Parkgate FC with Russ Eagle. I played for Russ and then ended up coaching and assisting with him there before moving to Handsworth and wining the league and cup before we joined forces and became Handsworth Parramore. Since then I ’ve joined forces with my old teammate Vill Powell and I’m currently his assistant manager along with Stacy Reed and coaching at Brighouse Town FC. Gav: Who had the best/ worst banter in the changing room? (and why) Leon: Craig Marsh had good banter and could get the group laughing and Gav Smith had a more laid back dry sense of humour. Dolby had the worst banter.....or was that worst singer....? ....maybe even worst drinker... I ’ll take worst hair before anyone else jumps in!!!

Sheffield FC 0 Derby County 1 FA National League North Thursday 11/10/18 Attendance: 128

Sheffield were beaten by a single goal at a rainswept Home of Football on Thursday, as promotion chasing Derby County ran out 1-0 winners. Inside the first 10 minutes, Derby’s Olivia Mitcham went close after a dangerous Hannah Ward set piece; with Mitcham’s looping header dropping just past the post but had Elizabeth Hobson scrambling. Derby went one better and had the ball in the back of the net midway through the first half. Ward powerfully created a yard of space for herself and fired through the gloves of Hobson, too powerfully for the referee’s liking though, as she was denied her goal for a foul committed in the buildup. Derby were caught on the break as Lisa Giampalma exploited the space on the right wing, cut in superbly and looked to have put the home side in front but for an outstanding save from Sarah Morgan. Moments later, Morgan’s save proved vital as Derby turned defence into attack with speed with Jodie Redgrave’s perfectly weighted pass met an oncoming Andi Bell who opened up her body and dispatched precisely into the bottom right hand corner. Having opened the scoring Bell kept the scores level, as from a Derby corner, Sheffield broke quickly and looked to be through on goal but for a last ditch tackle from the striker who had raced the length of the pitch to deny the hosts an equaliser. Derby skipper Ward flew forward from tight back and looked strong causing the hosts problems and on the Sheffield FC: Hobson, Housley ©, stroke of halftime, her low driven shot looked to be Butcher, Russell, Hawcroft, heading in, but for a good save from Hobson. Giampalma, Wortley, Johnson, Sheffield, though, started the brighter of the two sides Heald, Neary, Tinsley. in the second half. Jess Heald’s volleyed attempt gave Subs: Havard, White, Wainwright, the Derby goal and Morgan some cause for concern as she could do nothing more than watch the ball fly just Smith. past the post. Derby County: Morgan, Joyce, The pressure on the Derby defence kept coming. Several Harrison, Tait, Smith, Ward ©, corners and off target attempt later and Sheffield still had nothing to show for their commendable efforts in Redgrave, Ball, Ledgister, Bell, the second half. Mitchum. Derby eventually settled and grew into the latter stages Subs: Newton, Kellogg, Watson, of the game and had a wonderful chance to extend their McIntosh. lead. Ward’s corner found Bell, who was denied her second goal of the game by a goal line clearance with Referee: Russell Kettell (Bramley) the rebound falling to Ward, whose piledriver effort forced the save of the match from Hobson. THURSDAY OCTOBER 25 2018

Free event - drop in any time between 10.30am -2.30pm. The FA Cup and the first ever public display of the rules of the game will be on display at Central library. Join Sheffield football historians for a special day celebrating Sheffield’s unique status as the true home of football. It’s a day to bring in your treasured Sheffield football memorabilia, or to leave an oral record of your best Sheffield footballing memories and moments. The library will be displaying archive material relating to Sheffield’s football past, including a copy of the hugely influential Sheffield Rules that were penned (and pencilled!) 160 years ago on 27th October 1858. These are the world's third oldest Club written playing rules behind John Hope’s Foot-Ball Club (Edinburgh 1833) and Surrey FC (1849). The difference we have from those clubs is that the Sheffield Rules of 1858 would go on to be very influential in the evolution of the current Association football game. Of course, the Rules’ authors, Sheffield FC (the world’s oldest football club), are very much still with us. No tickets needed and a free admission for a lively conversation and complimentary refreshments. If you cannot attend, we shall be live tweeting using the hashtag #sheffieldhomeoffootball and posting at the Sheffield Home of Football Facebook group during the event. Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

158 years ago In 1860 a practice game was scheduled in this week, played at East Bank, Club’s original home. A later practice game, in this week in 1864, notes the match was the 'First half of the alphabet' v 'the Remainder' and back in 1860 it will have been something similar as opposition sides were thin on the ground at that stage! In December of that year Sheffield FC played the 58th Regiment, stationed at Hillsborough Barracks, and of course on Boxing Day they beat Hallam FC at Sandygate and club football was born!

In This Week With Andy Dixon

130 years ago In 1888 an 11-0 victory over Ardsley in the Sheffield & Hallamshire FA Cup set a record winning margin for Club. The figure would stand, in competitive games at least, for over 63 years before Geoff Robinson scored 5 goals against Halifax Town ‘A’ in a 13-0 Yorkshire League win in 1951. Just 2 weeks later Robinson hit 10 in a 14-1 victory and those 13-goal margins still stand as the record today. October 13th: SHEFFIELD FC 11 (George Aizlewood (3), Albert Bingham, William Wright, George Parker) Ardsley 0 110 years ago Another Sheffield & Hallamshire FA Cup win for Club in this week in 1908. In form striker Vivian Simpson, a league and cup winner with Sheffield Wednesday, scored the first in the victory over Birdwell. Sheffield went on to win 2 more rounds in the competition before eventually going out away to Mexborough Town. October 10th: SHEFFIELD FC 2 (Vivian Simpson, D. Green) Birdwell 1 80 years ago After losing to Worksop last week it’s nice to look back on a win in the Sheffield Association League in this week in 1938. For a change prolific striker Henry Moseley was somewhat overshadowed as Dr. T. Lodge hit a hat-trick in the 5-3 away win. October 15th: Worksop Town Reserves 3 SHEFFIELD FC 5 (Dr. T. Lodge (3), Colin Smith, Henry Moseley) 30 years ago In 1988 Sheffield had started the season in outstanding form, with 6 wins and a draw, but had suffered their first defeat of the campaign when exiting the FA Vase at Louth United in the previous week. They wanted to recover quickly and a pair of goals from legendary midfielder Mickey Stewart, who would make 300 Club appearances in total, helped them do just that with a good NCEL win against Garforth. October 15th: SHEFFIELD FC 3 (Mickey Stewart (2), John MacFadzean) Garforth Town 1 10 years ago It was FA Cup Qualifying Round 3 action in this week in 2008. Sheffield trailed 3-0 at half time at Guiseley but an inspired display from a young substitute by the name of Andrew Gascoigne led a fightback that ended with current manager Gavin Smith equalising to force a replay. 3 days later Guiseley battled back from a goal down before Asa Ingall headed home what was to prove the deciding goal in the tie to put Club just one round away from the 1st Round proper. October 11th: Guiseley 3, SHEFFIELD FC 3 (Scott Partridge, Matt Outram, Gavin Smith) October 14th: SHEFFIELD FC 2 (Mick Goddard , Asa Ingall) Guiseley 1 1 year ago A clear win and defeat in this week last year. Firstly, a man-of-the-match show from Charlie Dawes saw him lead Club into the next round of the Sheffield & Hallamshire FA Cup with a hat -trick. 4 days later the side were easily beaten at Spalding as they continued to struggle in the NPL, the loss meaning just 2 wins and 11 points from the opening 14 games. Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

ww.sheffieldfc.com

EARLY FOOTBALL Versions of football evolved in many early civilisations, example of these can be found in ancient China, Greece and Rome. In England the original games were played between villages in fields and streets. This ‘Mob Football’ involved hundreds of players and was little more than prolonged and violent street battles. During the 19th century a more refined version of the game grew in popularity within the public schools and universities, each playing to their own sets of rules. THE BIRTH OF SHEFFIELD FOOT BALL CLUB. During the 1850s the enthusiasm and influence of ex-public school and university students spread the popularity of the game around Sheffield. In the summer of 1857 William Prest and Nathaniel Creswick agreed that the game would be a splendid candidate for organised sport during the winter months. The pair wrote to the Public Schools for information, regarding their varying rules, with the aim of drawing up a set of laws embodying the best points from each. On October 24th, 1857, the world’s first football club was born in a greenhouse, at the home of Harry Chambers. Chambers went on to become one of the club’s greatest players, and Secretary, in a career that spanned over 40 years. Among the first rules drawn up were laws asserting that “no hacking or tripping up is fair under any circumstances”, “no player may be held or pulled over” and “it is not lawful to take the ball off the ground [using hands]”. Upon the formation of the Football Association in 1863, Sheffield Club’s insistence on these laws began the evolution into the game we recognise globally today. Heading, solid crossbars, corner kicks, free-kicks for fouls, throw-ins, a half-time change of ends and floodlit matches can all be traced to the innovators of Sheffield F.C.! EARLY YEARS Initially early matches, such as Married men v Unmarried, had to be played between Club members. Records also show games against local army sides. Following victory over the 58 th Army Regiment in 1860 a local report stated that, “most of the officers were adepts at the game, having, in their younger days, played in the public school matches, and the victory of the civilians was quite unexpected.” Following the birth of Hallam F.C., the world’s first inter-club game took place on Boxing Day in 1860. The match “was conducted with good temper and in a friendly spirit”, concluding in a 2-0 win for Sheffield. For several years all matches were played locally, against a rising number of new sides, before the first ‘out of town’ match was played in Nottinghamshire in 1865. In 1866 the first game limited to a length of 90 minutes was played at Battersea Park against London. The FA Cup was founded in 1871 and in its third season Sheffield became the first northern side to take part. They succeeded in reaching the quarter finals in this and two further seasons also, 1876 and 1878. 1872 saw the first international game, between England and Scotland in Glasgow, with Sheffield’s Charles Clegg playing for the England side. Clegg would later go on to be Chairman, and President, of the FA and receive a knighthood for his services to the game.

Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

ww.sheffieldfc.com

From the 1880s onwards the rise of professionalism and Sheffield Club’s firm insistence of retaining their amateur status saw them overtaken and overshadowed by other sides in the area. During these years the very survival of the club owed much to the leadership of former players Harry Chambers and Harry Broughton Willey. After the death of the latter in 1933 the minutes stated that “Mr H.B. Willey for years had carried the Club on his back, administratively and financially, making up a yearly deficit from his own pocket.” It wasn’t all doom and gloom though! In fact Sheffield enjoyed possibly their greatest hour in 1904 when they won the Amateur Cup, beating Ealing 3-1 at Valley Parade, Bradford. YORKSHIRE LEAGUE 1949 brought admission to the Yorkshire League and a resurgence, which saw the side promoted to Division One in their third season and reach the League Cup final in 1953. In 1957 they celebrated their Centenary year and reached their first Sheffield and Hallamshire FA Cup final in 1962. The 1950s also saw the emergence of the Club’s greatest legend with forward Geoff Robinson (above) scoring 232 goals over 216 appearances. After a period of yo-yoing between divisions the 1977 side were crowned Division Two Champions and reached that season’s FA Vase final at Wembley. They established themselves as a top division side in the Yorkshire League, lifting the League Cup in 1978, before joining the newly founded Northern Counties East League in 1982. NORTHERN COUNTIES LEAGUE The Division One title was won in both 1989 and 1991 and a first Sheffield and Hallamshire FA Cup win came in 1994. In 2001 the club acquired a permanent ground, for the first time, when moving to its current home. After the turn of the century the side began to consistently challenge for promotion, winning both the League Cup and Sheffield and Hallamshire FA Cup on two occasions. The 2006/07 season ended with a 2 nd place finish and promotion to the Northern Premier League. NORTHERN PREMIER LEAGUE The side made an instant impact in reaching the 2008 play-off final, narrowly losing only on penalties. That first season also saw games against Inter Milan and Ajax at Bramall Lane, as part of the 150th birthday celebrations, and a few years later a win at Hallam’s Sandygate ground to mark the anniversary of the first inter-club match. Sheffield have twice more been involved in the season ending play-offs and lifted the Sheffield & Hallamshire FA Cup on two further occasions also. Manager Gavin Smith took over in May 2018, and hopes are high for 2018/19 of making good progress from last season’s disappointing 17th place finish. In addition the SFC Ladies’ team have now risen from the lowest rung of women’s football, to play alongside the elite of the game in the FA Women’s National League. Sheffield Futsal Club were again amongst the country’s leading sides, the Under 19s won the League Cup and the newly formed Sheffield FC Veterans (with Jim Fern scoring, right) went to the San Siro Stadium in Milan to win the ACLI Invitational Trophy as the club continues to go from strength to strength in the grass roots game in its 161st season.
