Welcome... To The Home of Football

ww.sheffieldfc.com

Hello and welcome to Dronfield for today’s Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup game between Sheffield FC and Worksop Town.

We had a great performance from the lads at the weekend, beating Carlton Town 1-0. It wasn’t a good game to watch for the supporter, due to it being a scrappy game. We looked solid and the work rate and desire was there from all involved. Carlton never looked like scoring, I knew we would get a goal, and what a goal it was.

Mitch scores goals like that all the time in training, so once I saw him in that position, I knew it would end up in the back of the net. Defensive wise we looked big, solid and I’m over the moon that we kept a clean sheet. Let’s hope for more of the same! Enjoy the game UTC Gav

Worksop Town

ww.sheffieldfc.com

Worksop Town was officially founded in 1861, making it the fourth oldest football club in the world. There is some controversy around this date however with no contemporary evidence to support this – the first recorded use of the Worksop Town name not coming until later. For those not interested in historical pedantry we’ll just accept the 1861 date in this article though! Town played in regional Sheffield Leagues from 1892 to the end of the century, apart from an unsuccessful season in the Midland League in 1896/97. In 1900, after finishing 1st and then 2nd in the Sheffield Association League, they re-joined the Midland League and finished 3rd in 1903, although were generally in the lower half of the table, their next best finish was 8th in the season before the First World War.

A merge with Manton Athletic followed the war and the club had a much-improved run in the Midland League, winning the title in 1922, and the Sheffield & Hallamshire Cup in 1924, although struggling as the 1920s turned into the 1930s. In 1930 the club withdrew from the Midland League and disbanded, although was re-formed just a week later! After spells in the Sheffield Association League and Central Combination Worksop joined the Yorkshire League in 1935. After the end of World War II Worksop Town Athletic competed in the Sheffield Association League before joining the Midland League in 1949. They lifted the Sheffield & Hallamshire FA Cup in 1953 & 1955 and again in 1966 when they also won the Midland League title. In 1968 they were founder members of the Northern Premier League but returned to the Midland League the following year. In 1973 they won the Midland League once more and re-joined the NPL, where they remained for 30 years. Towards the end of the 20th century they began to regularly challenge at the top of the table, finishing 2nd in 1999 and in 2004 being founding members of the Conference North division.

In 2003 they won an 11th Sheffield & Hallamshire FA Cup trophy and have lifted it once more since – seeing them behind just Wednesday and Frickley in terms of total wins. They reached the FA Trophy Quarter Finals in 2000/01, a run they would match during their 3-season spell in the Conference North before they were relegated back to the NPL in 2007. The club fell into financial difficulties, leading to them losing ownership of their Sandy Lane ground, where they have since returned but now as tenants of Worksop Parramore. On the pitch they battled to return to Conference North, coming close after reaching the play-offs in 2014. More financial problems meant that Worksop had to look down rather than up at the end of the season and they resigned from the NPL and dropped two levels into the NCEL Premier Division. After finishing 2nd, to Shaw Lane, and then 4th in their first seasons they have fallen into the bottom half of the table in each of the last 2 campaigns, ending 2017/18 down in 18th place. This season has seen improved result under new manager Craig Denton though. In the league they have 4 wins from 7, with an unbeaten record away from home, scoring 9 in their last 2 at Athersley & Knaresborough. In cup competitions they won their Sheffield & Hallamshire FA Cup 1st Round game comfortably at Hemsworth, knocked NPL side Carlton Town out of the FA Cup and will come here today looking to take the scalp of another higher-level side. Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

History Corner

With Andy Dixon

ww.sheffieldfc.com

In total we can turn up 40 previous meetings, across 6 different divisions and 4 cup competitions, between the sides in competitive competition. Surprisingly for two sides recognised as being amongst the oldest in the world the first match in our archive didn’t take place until 1894, although there were then 6 clashes in that calendar year!

Before World War II Town undoubtedly held the upper hand when the sides played each other and that began in February 1894 when Worksop won a Sheffield & District League meeting 3-2. There were 3 games in April which saw Club lose 1-2, at home, and 1-3, away, in Sheffield & Hallamshire FA Cup clashes. Finally, there was some more positive news for Sheffield in the return league fixture when the sides drew 1-1. Before 1894 was over Worksop had added two more wins, both in the S&H FA Cup, as the came out on top twice in the opening months of the 1894/95 season. The following season the same competition saw another win for Town before Club finally came out on top with goals from Crofton Burridge, Harry Potts & Robert Blake leading a 3 -1 in Worksop. The Tigers dominated the next 7 meetings which preceded World War I, winning 6 and drawing the other. Before those commenced the sides did play out a 1-1 draw in a friendly in September 1899 before a run of wins for Town in the Sheffield Association League and the Wharncliffe League & Cup. This was only broken by a 1 -1 draw for Club at home in early 1902 when H. Coward’s goal proved enough to claim a Wharncliffe League point. By 1903 Worksop’s Reserves were strong enough to record a double over Sheffield, winning 2-1 & 4-3, in Sheffield Association League fixtures. Between the wars the results were more even, with Club claiming a couple of Sheffield Association League wins in 1938, Dr. T. Lodge knocking in 5 of the 11 goals Sheffield registered. Either side of this are victories for Worksop, including a big 7-1 victory for Town’s first XI in a first FA Cup clash, in 1934. Post-WWII Sheffield were generally outclassed against the full Worksop side, conceding 12 as they lost all 4 meetings, but did well against Town’s Reserves. In the Yorkshire League games listed Sheffield had a record of 6 wins, 1 draw and just 1 defeat, played out across 3 different divisions. In between those a League Cup tie in Worksop went to extra time before the home side won with the only goal of the game in the added time. The last league meetings came in the 1973/74 season and since then the only matches have come in the Sheffield & Hallamshire FA Cup, where we meet again this evening. In January 1986 Town won easily by a 6 -2 score before a much tighter game in the final of the cup in 1994; that one ended 1-1 with penalties required to separate the sides, Sheffield eventually winning 6-5 to give Club the first of their 5 successes in the competition. A second win at Hillsborough also came against Worksop, when Ben Cressey scored the only goal of the game in 2005. Between those victories Sheffi eld had lost two meetings at home to Worksop quite heavy margins, going down 5-0 in an early round in 1996 and then 4-1 in the Semi Finals in 2004. After the first of those Worksop powered on to win the final by an incredible 7-0 margin, losing to Frickley in the latter year. Sheffield retained the cup in 2006 and Worksop reached the final, losing to Stocksbridge in 2007 before the sides met in the final for a third time the following year. Club made it 3 wins from 3 on the big occasion thanks to a Gavin Smith double while Jamie Holmshaw kept a clean sheet for Sheffi eld at the other end. In recent years there have been 2 meetings in earlier rounds, both at Sandy Lane, with a victory for each club. In 2015 an early Andy Ofosu goal proved enough for the Tigers to progress – of course Ofosu would later have a fleeting career in Club colours and there were several other familiar faces in Mark Shaw’s Town side, including Steve Woolley, Jamie Hadfield, Julian Lawrence & Conor Higginson. The following year saw the same tie thrown up, but this time Sheffield made light work of the task. The forward line was FIRST MEETING – 24/02/1894 being led by a young striker called Connor Hall, who had failed to register a goal in his first 5 appearances on loan Sheffield & District Division 1 from Sheffield United. One hat-trick later and Club were into Round 2 with Hall going on to hit 13 more in his next 12 Worksop Town 3 games before going on to earn a contract with Bolton SHEFFIELD FC 2 (Crofton Wanderers, from where he is currently playing on loan with League One Accrington Stanley. Burridge, own goal) Of course, the sides met in a pre-season friendly back in July of this year, with a tired looking Club squad, just back from a match in Germany, going down 2-1 in a game arranged at short notice. Matt Sykes opened the scoring for Worksop, Jamie Yates scored a good equaliser but the lead last just 2 minutes as a long ball from Harley Wilson somehow found its way into the net to seal the win.

LAST MEETING – 05/10/2016 Sheffield & Hallamshire Cup Rd 1 Worksop Town 1 (Jack Andrews) SHEFFIELD FC 3 (Connor Hall-3)

Prescot Cables 6 Sheffield FC 2 FA Trophy Replay Tuesday 30/09/18 Attendance: 221

Sheffield FC rued the missed opportunity to progress in another cup competition, as they crashed out of the FA Trophy 6-2 to Prescot Cables at Hope Street on Tuesday evening, after drawing 2-2 at the Home of Football the previous Saturday. It was a terrible start for Sheffield, as from the off they were put on the back foot with a break on the right hand side, with the ball whipped across for Jake Linehan (pictured) to stab home from close range. The hosts looked as if they would add to the tally at will, with several attempts going close, as the visitors were cut open through the middle by a dominant home midfield. Eventually Club came back into the game, with Waide Fairhurst and Sam Wright going close, and Julian Lawrence adventuring forward to head over. The scores were levelled on 29 minutes as a lofted ball forward by Stuart Ludlam cut open the defence, with Waide Fairhurst taking the ball, lobbing the keeper with a perfectly weighted effort to silence the home crowd, Five minutes before the break Sheffield were punished for ball watching, with Jordan Wynne taking advantage of sloppy defending, to drive home at the second attempt. Sheffield started the second half with more purpose, and after Ben Turner and James Gregory went close, Club found themselves level on the hour mark. Johnny Pugh put a corner in that was half cleared, the winger put a deeper ball back into the box, with centre half Julian Lawrence volleying the ball home from ten Prescot Cables: Barnes, yards out. Fernandes, Edgar, McCulloch ©, Parity lasted a matter of seconds, as a hasty clearance Herbert, Lenehan, Southworth, from the substitute Prescot keeper caught Club flat, Wynne, Klein-Davies, Dean, with Chris Almond breaking the defence to round Adam Kelsey to make it 3-2 to Cables. Almond. Subs: Cooper, Coyne, Monaghan, Ten minutes later the tie was more or less put out of reach, as Lawrence was caught out at the back to Haslam. concede a penalty; Almond stepped up to send Kelsey Sheffield FC: Kelsey, Turner, the wrong way. Eagle, Wright, Ludlam, Lawrence, It took two more minutes for Prescot to make it 5-2, Pugh, Smiljanić, Fairhurst, with Sheffield switching off once again at the back, Newsham ©, Gregory. and Josh Klein-Davies driving the ball home emphatically with the defence watching. Subs: Yates, Roney, Mitcheson, The scoring was completed just before full-time, again Ferri-Cortés. the defence cut open with some more tired looking Referee: Dan Bruce (Wallasey) defending, allowing Lloyd Dean to tap in an easy goal. Carlton Town 0 Sheffield FC 1 Evo-Stik East Division Saturday, 06/10/18 Attendance: 74

Sheffield FC put the bad memory of the past week behind them with a well-earned victory at Carlton Town, writes Stuart James, with a sound defensive display to record their first cleansheet of the season. The game was very slow to start, with both sides finding it hard to string the vital passes together, Carlton having the first real offensive came on 15 minutes when Oliver Clark played in Luke Smithson who's shot was tipped wide by Adam Kelsey. Things started to liven up in the last ten minutes of the half, following a James Gregory run down the left, and Waide Fairhurst nodding his cross just wide. In injury time there were chances at each end; Marc Newsham set up Waide Fairhurst for a chance which lacked power in the shot, whilst at the other end a Niall Davie cross was deflected onto the crossbar by Juanjo Ferri-Cortés with Adam Kelsey stranded. It was yet more dour football after the break, again Fairhurst looking most likely to do anything of note, firing an early shot just wide from the edge of the box. Carlton almost scored a freak goal at the other end; Oliver Robinson’s free kick should have been dealt with by Kelsey, however in attempting to punch clear, the goalkeeper inadvertently sliced his punch with the ball heading into the net until the covering Ben Turner headed off the line. On 64 minutes Fairhurst made way for Mitch Dunne, four minutes later a defence splitting pass from Daz Winter found Dunne in acres of space, he ran from left to right with nothing in the way of a challenge to stop him and then unleashed a screamer from 25 yards which flew past Steggles into the top Carlton Town: Steggles, Robinson, corner. Bartle, Davie, Moore, Walker, Pick, It was a goal completely out of keeping with the rest of Clark, Smithson, Hutchinson ©, the game, but it gave Club the impetus to see the game out, with the defensive pair of Tyreece Robinson and Daz Austin. Subs: Tomlinson, Opoku, Clarke, Winter repelling everything that came their way. Sheffield were the ones who looked more likely to score, Akaunu, Frost. and really should have added when a James Gregory Sheffield FC: Kelsey, Ferri-Cortés, cross was met by the diving header of Marc Newsham, Turner, Wright, Robinson, Winter, unfortunately for the prolific striker the ball ricocheted Mackie, Smiljanić, Fairhurst, off his shoulder and over the bar. Newsham ©, Gregory. Five minutes from time Gregory sent another telling cross in, this time Johnny Pugh met the ball with a shot, Subs: Pugh, Eagle, Yates, Wakefield, only to see it rattle the stanchion. Dunne. In injury time referee Wainman sent Carlton manager Referee: Tom Wainman (Tamworth) Wayne Scott from the bench, after one of his coaching staff stopped the ball going out for a throw-in, capping off a frustrating afternoon for the hosts. Sir Halley Stewart Field Winfrey Avenue Spalding Lincolnshire PE11 1DA Telephone: 01775 713328 th Saturday 20 October 2018 (KO 3:00)

By Car

A long one this - whichever way you are getting here. Head south on the A1, going as far as the Colsterworth junction, exiting and heading east along the A151 towards and through Bourne. Continue on towards Spalding town centre, turning left at the “Station Gates” public house, and immediately right at the Sainsbury’s Supermarket, and left into Winfrey Avenue. Parking is a bit of a dodgy affair, free-parking is available a short walk away from the ground if you can find it, but the majority choose the Pay and Display across from the main gates. It costs about £1.50 for the length of the game.

From Home of Football: 2 hours. From Sheffield Centre: 2 hours 10 mins*

By Public Transport Nearest Station: Spalding ¼m. Out of station, cross road and walk through car park, then left into Winfrey Avenue and ground is on right.

What to Expect It’s a lovely old ground this one. There are a plethora of portacabins scattered about, with the main feature being the main stand (right). The main stand is steep, has a double staircase and offers a panoramic view of the town. Other than that it is tree lined and backs onto terraced housing. There are some steps behind the far goal, and flat standing elsewhere. For refreshments there is the clubhouse to your left as you come in, and if it is still there, a very popular chip bar next to it. Sheffield FC v Worksop Town S&HCFA Senior Cup Round 2 - 09.10.18

Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

League Review With Steve Whitney

ww.sheffieldfc.com

Morpeth Town moved five points clear at the top of the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Division One East table on Saturday. The Highwaymen edged out Lincoln United at Craik Park – their eighth straight league win. The game was decided in the 69th minute when David Carson curled home the winning goal. Gresley FC are now third after a 3-2 win at third-bottom Pickering Town. The Moatmen, who struggled last season, took the lead right on the stroke of halftime through Kane Lee and then extended that 8 minutes into the second period, thanks to a Martin Smyth penalty. Kieran O'Connell made it 3-0 just 4 minutes later, but the Pikes made them sweat by pulling two back from Joe Danby after 69 minutes and Josh Greening 4 minutes later.

Merged Ossett United could have gone second had they won at AFC Mansfield, but the Bulls held them to a 1-1 draw. Karl Jones gave United a 15th minute lead that Kieran Wells cancelled out on 66 minutes. Spalding United are still without a league win in 2018/19 after losing 2-1 at Westfield Lane against a Frickley Athletic side who had lost their previous four games. But the Blues had a new hero in sub Lewis Szanto, who bagged a late brace in the 82nd and 89th minutes after Luke White had given the Tulips a 61st minute lead. Spalding's neighbours Wisbech Town are also finding it tough after promotion and were beaten 4-1 in the Fens by Tadcaster Albion. Billy Whitehouse gave Taddy the lead after 22 minutes, only for Michael Frew to equalise on the half-hour mark. Aiden Savory then restored the visitors' lead right on half-time and extended it on 66 minutes, with Casey Stewart adding a fourth just 3 minutes from time. Stamford AFC returned to winning ways after two defeats, beating a Brighouse Town side who started the day in third place. Brad Fortnam-Tomlinson gave the Daniels a great start at the Zeeco with a 3rd minute opener. Chris Salt added a second 10 minutes later, with Tom Haigh reducing the arrears in the 28th minute. Grant Ryan made it 3-1 in the 38th minute, and although Aaron Martin pulled a second back for the Yorkshire side 20 minutes from time, they weren't able to find a leveller. Belper Town enjoyed a 2-0 win at Bracken Moor against Stocksbridge Park Steels with goals from Ricky Parlour after 35 minutes and Nathan Curtis in the 69th minute, while a see-saw encounter at Loughborough Dynamo saw Pontefract Collieries share a 3-3 draw. Karl Demidh scored the only first half goal for Dynamo and then 3 minutes into the second half, Mike Dunn levelled. Luke Thorogood restored Dynamo's lead after 63 minutes, only for Glyn Cotton to equalise within 2 minutes. This time it was Colls' who took the lead just 2 minutes later, with a Demidh penalty earning the hosts a point 13 minutes from time. Sheffield FC v Worksop Town S&HCFA Senior Cup Round 2 - 09.10.18

Sheffield FC 1 Chesterfield 6 FA Youth Cup 2nd Qualifying Round Thursday 04/10/18 Attendance: 164

Club in Action Under 18s

Russ Eagle's Under 18s side's FA Youth Cup adventure came to an end on Thursday, as they were blown away by a first half whirlwind from near neighbours Chesterfield at the Home of Football, with the visitors running out 6-1 winners in front of a bumper attendance. Chesterfield started quickly, and on 7 minutes Luke Rawson was brought down by Club keeper Ben Woodcock. The penalty taken by Rawson, but saved well by Woodcock, however Levi Amantchi drove home the rebound to make it 1-0. On 13 minutes it became 2-0, a free kick from Zac Walker hit the post, Club couldn't clear the ball far and Rawson's cross back in to the box picked out Walker lurking at the back to nod home. Chesterfield's tall winger Levi Amantchi was catching the eye of several interested parties, and a long loping run on the left on 21 minutes had the defence standing, ending with a great finish from the tightest of angles. Jack Holmes found Zak Walker in acres of space on the edge of the box, with 29 minutes gone, with a delicate chip beating Ben Woodcock to make it 4-0. It was 5-0 on 33 minutes, as a great ball in from the right by Zak Walker was met by an acrobatic volley from five yards by Levi Amantchi, who claimed his hattrick. The minutes before the break it was 6-0, as a ball on right from Walker found Amantchi, who's cross picked out Luke Rawson to head home. It was a much more even second half, and Club grabbed a well earned consolation ten minutes from the end following a great move on right from Ben Mitcheson, and volleyed home by Callum Walton.

Sheffield FC: Woodcock, Carpenter, Eagle, Currie, White, Chappell, Morley, Mitcheson, Walton, Porter, Watkinson. Subs: Smith, Wright, Cooke, Butcher, Phillis. Chesterfield FC: Wharton, Howard, Gibson, Sharman, Render, Holmes, Walker, Turner, Rawson, Fuertado, Amantchi. Subs: Unwin-Marris, Bradbury, Tansley, Papworth, Emery. Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

Club in Action Ladies

ww.sheffieldfc.com

Sheffield FC 2 Stoke City 0 FA National League North Sunday 07/10/18 Attendance: 120

Sheffield FC Ladies ended a run of three straight league defeats by putting in a season’s best performance against Stoke City LFC at the Home of Football stadium. Sheffield started brightly, displaying plenty of energy and intent to limit Stoke to any real time on the ball. Whilst the effort was there, the game lacked much real quality with both sides limiting themselves to hopeful balls and pot shots from range in the early stages. Sheffield were somewhat fortunate to not fall behind, following a mix-up at the back with only a fine Liz Hobson save at the near post keeping the scores level midway through the first half. The half continued in a similar fashion throughout, and in spite of Sheffield’s best efforts, they struggled to find ways to support Giampalma up top and create any clear-cut opportunities. Similarly Stoke’s normally effective directness failed to massively test the hosts’ defence. Both teams raced out of the blocks in the early stages of the second half, the bitter Derbyshire wind a stark contrast to the heat on the pitch. Stoke attacked first, moving the ball well on the left of Sheffield’s box before Ella Pemberton’s effort crashed off the cross bar. Moments later, it was Hobson who kept the scores level as she brilliantly collected a well struck effort from range. Sheffield’s turn. Minutes after nearly falling behind, Club should have been ahead after a number of quick attacks resulting in efforts from Holly Housley and Ellie Hawcroft, but the best came from a smart movement across the front line, which saw Jess Heald fed through the middle only for her effort to drift agonisingly wide if the upright. The half continued in the same manner, each side fashioning half chances and playing well through the thirds, but it would be Sheffield to finally break the deadlock on 73 Sheffield FC: Hobson, White, minutes. Housley ©, Butcher, Giampalma, A forward ball was brilliantly protected by Giampalma, Wortley, Johnson, Heald, Neary, her strength and pace leaving Stoke’s centre-half sprawled on the floor. Play approached the box, and the Tinsley, Wainwright. forward slid a clever ball across to Hawcroft who applied Subs: Havard, Russell, Hawcroft, the finish for her first senior goal. Smith. Moments later it was two. Milly Wortley capitalised on some slack Stoke play in the middle of the park, drove Stoke City: Wright, Hudson, Roberts, forward twisting her opponent into knots and opening Tezgel, Hyde, Pemberton, Hayes, up the space for Giampalma to receive the ball who, this Keryakoplis, Bowyer ©, Owen. time, finished past the on-rushing Wright. Sheffield Subs: Chapman, Hughes, Wellings, erupted. Kivel, Bolton. As expected, Stoke ramped up their attack making a number of changes that left three or four players high in Referee: Steve Beresford the last 10 minutes. A number of chances came and went (Rotherham) for the visitors, but some excellent defending and solid goalkeeping meant the Potters could not find a way through. Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

130 years ago Back in 1888 Club managed to win a home FA Cup tie but still not make it to the next round! At home in this week Sheffield beat Middlesbrough South Bank, but afterwards the visitors protested that “the field of play was not properly fenced, and that the spectators interfered with the play ”. 120 years ago After beginning the season with a pair of convincing Yorkshire League defeats the side had beaten Bradford and then, in this week, bettered Dewsbury to lift spirits of a good campaign ahead. The return fixture, scheduled for mid-November, was not to prove such a happy occasion however, but more on that in a future week. October 8th: SHEFFIELD FC 2 (Joseph Eadon, Moses Bruster) Dewsbury 0 70 years ago On this date in 1948 Sheffi eld were early into their first full post-war season. A poor start to the campaign continued when the side was knocked out of the Sheffield & Hallamshire FA Cup at home to Sheffi eld Wednesday ‘A’. October 9th: SHEFFIELD FC 1 (Frank Melling) Sheffi eld Wednesday ‘A’ 4 50 years ago Club had been relegated in 1967 and would continue to slide down the league standings over the next several years but the season had started well in 1968. A big win in this week made it 6 unbeaten in the league but sadly the strong start couldn’t be maintained, and the team would win just 1 of their next 6. October 5th: SHEFFIELD FC 5 (J.Lodge, Chris Etches, Peter Allen) Hall Road Rangers 0 10 years ago In 2008 this week saw Club make it 6 straight wins, in 5 different competitions, as they knocked Bamber Bridge out of the FA Trophy to set up a trip to Skelmersdale in the next round. Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

ww.sheffieldfc.com

EARLY FOOTBALL Versions of football evolved in many early civilisations, example of these can be found in ancient China, Greece and Rome. In England the original games were played between villages in fields and streets. This ‘Mob Football’ involved hundreds of players and was little more than prolonged and violent street battles. During the 19th century a more refined version of the game grew in popularity within the public schools and universities, each playing to their own sets of rules. THE BIRTH OF SHEFFIELD FOOT BALL CLUB. During the 1850s the enthusiasm and influence of ex-public school and university students spread the popularity of the game around Sheffield. In the summer of 1857 William Prest and Nathaniel Creswick agreed that the game would be a splendid candidate for organised sport during the winter months. The pair wrote to the Public Schools for information, regarding their varying rules, with the aim of drawing up a set of laws embodying the best points from each. On October 24th, 1857, the world’s first football club was born in a greenhouse, at the home of Harry Chambers. Chambers went on to become one of the club’s greatest players, and Secretary, in a career that spanned over 40 years. Among the first rules drawn up were laws asserting that “no hacking or tripping up is fair under any circumstances”, “no player may be held or pulled over” and “it is not lawful to take the ball off the ground [using hands]”. Upon the formation of the Football Association in 1863, Sheffield Club’s insistence on these laws began the evolution into the game we recognise globally today. Heading, solid crossbars, corner kicks, free-kicks for fouls, throw-ins, a half-time change of ends and floodlit matches can all be traced to the innovators of Sheffield F.C.! EARLY YEARS Initially early matches, such as Married men v Unmarried, had to be played between Club members. Records also show games against local army sides. Following victory over the 58 th Army Regiment in 1860 a local report stated that, “most of the officers were adepts at the game, having, in their younger days, played in the public school matches, and the victory of the civilians was quite unexpected.” Following the birth of Hallam F.C., the world’s first inter-club game took place on Boxing Day in 1860. The match “was conducted with good temper and in a friendly spirit”, concluding in a 2-0 win for Sheffield. For several years all matches were played locally, against a rising number of new sides, before the first ‘out of town’ match was played in Nottinghamshire in 1865. In 1866 the first game limited to a length of 90 minutes was played at Battersea Park against London. The FA Cup was founded in 1871 and in its third season Sheffield became the first northern side to take part. They succeeded in reaching the quarter finals in this and two further seasons also, 1876 and 1878. 1872 saw the first international game, between England and Scotland in Glasgow, with Sheffield’s Charles Clegg playing for the England side. Clegg would later go on to be Chairman, and President, of the FA and receive a knighthood for his services to the game.

Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

ww.sheffieldfc.com

From the 1880s onwards the rise of professionalism and Sheffield Club’s firm insistence of retaining their amateur status saw them overtaken and overshadowed by other sides in the area. During these years the very survival of the club owed much to the leadership of former players Harry Chambers and Harry Broughton Willey. After the death of the latter in 1933 the minutes stated that “Mr H.B. Willey for years had carried the Club on his back, administratively and financially, making up a yearly deficit from his own pocket.” It wasn’t all doom and gloom though! In fact Sheffield enjoyed possibly their greatest hour in 1904 when they won the Amateur Cup, beating Ealing 3-1 at Valley Parade, Bradford. YORKSHIRE LEAGUE 1949 brought admission to the Yorkshire League and a resurgence, which saw the side promoted to Division One in their third season and reach the League Cup final in 1953. In 1957 they celebrated their Centenary year and reached their first Sheffield and Hallamshire FA Cup final in 1962. The 1950s also saw the emergence of the Club’s greatest legend with forward Geoff Robinson (above) scoring 232 goals over 216 appearances. After a period of yo-yoing between divisions the 1977 side were crowned Division Two Champions and reached that season’s FA Vase final at Wembley. They established themselves as a top division side in the Yorkshire League, lifting the League Cup in 1978, before joining the newly founded Northern Counties East League in 1982. NORTHERN COUNTIES LEAGUE The Division One title was won in both 1989 and 1991 and a first Sheffield and Hallamshire FA Cup win came in 1994. In 2001 the club acquired a permanent ground, for the first time, when moving to its current home. After the turn of the century the side began to consistently challenge for promotion, winning both the League Cup and Sheffield and Hallamshire FA Cup on two occasions. The 2006/07 season ended with a 2 nd place finish and promotion to the Northern Premier League. NORTHERN PREMIER LEAGUE The side made an instant impact in reaching the 2008 play-off final, narrowly losing only on penalties. That first season also saw games against Inter Milan and Ajax at Bramall Lane, as part of the 150th birthday celebrations, and a few years later a win at Hallam’s Sandygate ground to mark the anniversary of the first inter-club match. Sheffield have twice more been involved in the season ending play-offs and lifted the Sheffield & Hallamshire FA Cup on two further occasions also. Manager Gavin Smith took over in May 2018, and hopes are high for 2018/19 of making good progress from last season’s disappointing 17th place finish. In addition the SFC Ladies’ team have now risen from the lowest rung of women’s football, to play alongside the elite of the game in the FA Women’s National League. Sheffield Futsal Club were again amongst the country’s leading sides, the Under 19s won the League Cup and the newly formed Sheffield FC Veterans (with Jim Fern scoring, right) went to the San Siro Stadium in Milan to win the ACLI Invitational Trophy as the club continues to go from strength to strength in the grass roots game in its 161st season.
