Kevin Austin The Tributes

ww.sheffieldfc.com

Tributes have poured in on social media from fans, former players and former clubs of Kevin Austin who sadly lost his battle with pancreatic cancer at the weekend.

The 45-year-old had been working as Youth Development Phase Lead Coach at Scunthorpe United's Academy set-up, joining the Iron in September 2016. He enjoyed a long, illustrious career himself which spanned from 1992 where he began at Saffron Walden Town before having spells with the likes of Leyton Orient, Lincoln City and Swansea City before retiring twenty years after he turned professional - in 2012. He was eligible to play for both England and Trinidad and Tobago, opting to play for the latter on seven occasions. Over his career, he played for twelve different clubs, making over 500 appearances, scoring six goals. A tribute from Scunthorpe Academy Manager Tony Daws... Kevin Austin - it’s really hard to put into words what a ‘top man’ this guy actually was. Kev was an absolute gentleman, one of the most respectful, polite and humble men you could ever wish to meet. Kev was a listener; he would never criticise or say a bad word about anyone. Kev had a fantastic, witty personality and was an absolute pleasure to be around. Kev joined Scunthorpe in September 2016 when he came for an interview for the Youth Development Phase Lead Coach position in the Academy. His verbal interview went really well and it was during his practical coaching interview that it became clear how he used his striking personality, his excellent coaching skills and in-depth football knowledge to engage with the players and have them hanging on his every word. Kev’s calm manner and demeanour were perfect for working with adolescent football players and he quickly settled in and played a very important role in the Academy. Kev was an excellent development coach; he knew his football and he understood how players and children learn; he was very well respected and liked by all of the players, parents and staff. Before his terrible illness struck, I cannot remember Kev ever being off work for any reason, he was a real hard working man who put everything in to his job and he gave it his full commitment, he was extremely dedicated to the Football Club. We are absolutely devastated that Kev has been taken from us so early in his life; the world has certainly lost a true gentleman and an all-round great guy. Rest in peace big Kev.” A look back to his career... Saffron Walden Town - "Such sad news to hear about Kevin Austin who began his career with the Bloods. Kevin sadly passed away at the young age of 45 after a battle with Pancreatic Cancer. Our thought are with his family and friends"

Playing for a total of twelve different teams during his 20-year playing career, Austin began with a year at Saffron Walden Town in 1992-93 - a team based in Essex. After eight appearances for the club, he made the move to Leyton Orient on a free transfer in the summer of 1993.

Leyton Orient - "The Club are saddened to hear about the reported passing of former player Kevin Austin. He played over 100 times for the Club. We send our deepest condolences to his family and friends at this sad time. RIP Kevin." He would spend three years with Orient, making 126 appearances and scoring three goals over that period before a £30,000 transfer to Lincoln City. He would add a further 146 appearances to his playing career while with the Imps, scoring twice.

Lincoln City FC - "We are deeply saddened to hear of the loss of our former defender ‘Super’ Kevin Austin. Taken from us far too soon. May you Rest in Peace, Kev." Austin was a firm favourite during his three-year stint at Sincil Bank and was voted in at number 56 in Lincoln's 100 league legends back in June 2007 and would be a key part of the side which won promotion to the third tier in 1998. In 1999, his career would take him to Barnsley but a serious Achilles tendon injury would restrict him to just three appearances for the Tykes. A recurrence of that injury while on loan at Brentford would see him again only manage a trio of games for the Bees before he joined Cambridge United at 2001. Barnsley FC - "Barnsley Football Club today is saddened to learn that Kevin Austin has passed away. Kevin represented the Reds between 1999 and 2001. Our thoughts are with Kevin's family and loved ones at this difficult time." In arriving at the U's, he linked up with former manager John Beck, but his injury record would continue to trouble him with his contract cancelled in March 2002 by mutual consent. He'd complete the campaign with Kettering Town, making three appearances. 2002 saw him successfully earn a contract at Bristol Rovers and over the course of the next two years he'd make a total of 61 appearances for the side as he looked to shake off the injuries that had troubled him over the preceding three years. Two years on and he'd make the short transfer to Swansea City, albeit crossing a border in the process. Described as "a huge favourite with Swans fans" on the tribute on their website, Austin helped the club win promotion from League Two in their final year at Vetch Field in 2004-05. That would be just one of the achievements during his four-year stay at the club. He was also part of the squad that lifted the League One title under Roberto Martinez in 2007-08, as well as the 2006 Football League Trophy. Swansea City AFC - "We've all been left devastated today... RIP Kevin. Thank you for the memories you created with us." Kevin would make a total of 150 appearances for Swansea, including 139 starts before signing for Chesterfield in 2008. He would complete his playing career with Darlington and Boston United before hanging his boots up in 2012. Following his retirement, he took his UEFA 'A' license and first worked as a coach at the Sheffield Wednesday Academy prior to joining the club in 2016.

Swan Tributes

Solid as a Rock

ww.sheffieldfc.com

SOLID AS A ROCK. SWANSEA CITY’S FANS COULD NOT HAVE CHOSEN BETTER WHEN THEY CAME UP WITH THE LYRICS TO THE SONG THEY USED TO SING FOR KEVIN AUSTIN.

If you talk to any of Austin’s former team-mates, after all, they will tell you the same thing. Austin was a solid player and he was a solid bloke. As a result, he became a very popular figure both in the dressing room and in the stands during his stint as a Swan. “We have got a WhatsApp group of former Swansea players and we have been sharing our memories of Kev,” says Andy Robinson. “I broke down reading those, and I know a few of the other lads did too. We are talking about a proper gentleman. He had charisma and he got so much respect from all the other lads. We all knew he had been unwell, but it was gut-wrenching when we heard that he had passed away.” Austin signed for the Swans in the summer of 2004, arriving on a free transfer from Bristol Rovers. He was 30 when he joined, an experienced pro who had plenty of lower-league games under his belt. Kenny Jackett, the Swans manager at the time, turned to Austin because he wanted to add defensive nous to his squad. It proved a very shrewd move. “Kev was a great guy to have around the place,” says Alan Tate, who played alongside Austin in the Swans’ back four. He was one of the senior members of the squad and we all looked up to him. He had been through a lot in football and we all respected that. “He was also a really nice guy. He was aggressive on the pitch but off it he was a gentleman. It’s hard to believe that he has died at such a young age.” Kristian O’Leary is another fine Swans servant who played many a game alongside Austin. At times they were together at the back, on other occasions O’Leary played ahead of Austin in central midfield. A product of the club’s youth set-up who wore the Swans crest on his chest for a couple of decades, O’Leary had numerous team-mates over the years. Yet Austin is one who sticks out in the memory. “Over the 20 years I was at the club, only a certain number of people made a lasting impression on me,” O’Leary says. “Kevin was one of them. He was a true gentleman – a very good person and a very good friend. He was a very dependable guy and he was funny around the place. We would always have a joke together and he always had that big smile on his face.” There was plenty to be happy about during Austin’s stint as a Swan. He ended up staying for four seasons, during which time he racked up 150 appearances, two promotions and a Football League Trophy win. There was one major disappointment, when the Swans were beaten on penalties by Barnsley in the 2006 League One play-off final. A memorable picture from that afternoon shows Austin consoling Bayo Akinfenwa, one of the unfortunate ones who missed in the shootout. That photograph (right) tells a story about his position in the Swans dressing room at the time.

Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

“All the lads respected Kev,” Lee Trundle says. “He was always smiling but, if anyone did step out of line, he would be the first one to tell them. A lot of people divide opinions in football, but I don’t think Kev did. I don’t think you would find anyone with a bad word to say about him. “He wasn’t a goalscorer or a flair player, but I think the fans liked him because of the way he played and the person he was. He was a people’s person. It’s just heartbreaking that he is gone at such a young age.”

Austin made a whopping 50 appearances in 2004-05, the year the Swans said farewell to the Vetch by winning promotion from the fourth tier. He then played 35 times in 2005-06, and on 36 occasions in 2006-07, the year in which Jackett made way for Roberto Martinez. Austin played another 29 times in 2007-08 – his last as a Swan – as Martinez’s team passed their way to the League One title. “It was a very successful period in the club’s history,” O’Leary adds. “When you are having success on the field, that’s when the closest friendships are formed. Whenever you talk or meet up, you always go back to those good times. That’s the way it was with Kev. He was a big, strong dependable footballer and he was a really genuine good guy.” It says something about Austin’s footballing ability that he was able to contribute when Martinez took charge and introduced what would become known as the Swansea Way. “Under Kenny we were really strong defensively and Kev was a major part of that,” Leon Britton says. “But after Roberto came in, he played a big percentage of the games as well. “He was an honest player. Physically he was really strong – I don’t think I have seen anyone who could shepherd the ball out of play from 30 yards like he used to do. You would see wingers trying to get around his body but you knew it wasn’t going to happen. “Kev was dependable, consistent and reliable. You knew what you were going to get from him and he contributed a lot to two promotions. Off the pitch, he was just a lovely guy. That’s why everyone at the club has such fond memories of him.” Robinson remembers Austin’s penchant for performing the “cup and saucer trick” every time the Swans brought in a new signing. “When they came in on their first day, he would say ‘I am Kevin Austin, welcome to the club’ and he would make them a coffee or a tea,” Robinson explains. “He would come back with the cup and saucer and a spoon poking out of the top and then slip and drop it on the new signing’s lap. The new player would jump out of their chair, but of course there was nothing in the cup apart from the spoon. Kev would be grinning and I would be in bits every time.” Robinson played against Austin shortly before he became a team-mate in SA1. They came face to face at the tail-end of the 2003-04 season, when the Swans were beaten 2-1 at Bristol Rovers. “It was late in the game and Kev was shielding the ball in the corner to run down the clock,” Robinson recalls. “I remember thinking ‘I’m not having this’. I ran over and tried to smash him, but I just bounced off and ended up doing my knee ligaments. “When we got back for pre-season, who’s on the medical table at the Vetch? The bloke who I’d tried to smash when I did my ligaments. It was the first time I had actually met Kev. Even though it was all my fault, he came up to me and said sorry. That’s the bloke he was.”

Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

ww.sheffieldfc.com

Chesterfield Football Club was founded in the 1860’s however the side folded in 1881 leaving its players to join other local sides, one of which, Chesterfield Spital, provide our first recorded opposition from the town. In December 1884 Daff Davy hit a hat-trick for Club who won 4-1 to reach the FA Cup third round, their best performance since being disqualified after refusing to play extra time against Nottingham Forest five seasons previously! Sadly Notts County ended the run the following month when hammering Sheffi eld 5-0 in Nottingham. A new incarnation of Chesterfield Football Club formed in 1884, going on to change their name to Chesterfield Town, with the first meeting a friendly in 1888, which Sheffi eld won 3-1.

History Corner Versus Chesterfield

The Derbyshire side turned professional in 1891 and it’s not surprising that the rest of the 19th century results, played in the Sheffi eld & District League, generally ended in their favour. This first of these was in September 1893 where Town won their home game 9-0! The season did see Club win the return at least, with a 2-0 success at home in January. In the next two seasons Town would win all 4 league meetings although clearly the games were not inspiring the public with the crowd for Chesterfield’s 2-0 home win in October 1895 attracting a less than impressive attendance of 12, which included 3 reporters! The next Chesterfield based opposition comes between the wars, with games in the record books against Chesterfield Corinthians and Chesterfield Ramblers, before games against Chesterfield ‘A’ in the Yorkshire League seasons of 1951 & 1952. In the first season both games ended with wins for the away sides, Club losing 1 -2 at home in January before ending the season by winning 4-1 at Saltergate, Roy Benson and Alan Smith both striking twice. The following season both sides had good campaigns in Division 2, finishing level on points: although it was Club who were promoted, taking 3rd place on goal difference, Chesterfield A had the best of their meetings as they won 3 -2 at home and left Sheffi eld with a share of the points despite 2 goals from Club’s Geoff Robinson. The sides wouldn’t meet again due to not being at the same level before Chesterfield withdrew their ‘A’ side in 1955. The last competitive game, which we are aware of, against any side from the town, is a 3-0 win away to Chesterfield Tube Works in the Preliminary Round of the Amateur Cup in September 1967. Goals on that day came from Michael Goodwin, Ernest Bidwell & Glyn Morris while keeper Chris Cooke ensured no slip-ups at the other end. Obviously with the professional status of Chesterfield FC games have not been regular occurrences but the move to Dronfield has brought a close proximity between the clubs and there have been several pre -season friendlies in recent seasons. August 2008 saw a Spireites side visit the Coach & Horses with a crowd just short of 700 witnessing a 1 -1 draw against Chris Dolby’s side. Mick Goddard opened the scoring for Sheffi eld on 35 minutes but sadly the lead lasted a matter of minutes as Jordan Bowery equalised quickly, striking home from the edge of the area. The 17 year old Chesterfield keeper that day was Dan Whatsize who would go on to make 81 Sheffi eld appearances, including an unbroken run of 76, from 2010 to 2012! Also in the Spireites’ side was another future Clubbie in the shape of young winger Ben Algar. Ahead of the 2009/10 season Sheffi eld once more took the lead against their neighbours when a Matt Roney free kick was deflected past keeper Tommy Lee just past the quarter hour mark. A strong Spireites side hit back well though as Martin Gritton and Lloyd Kerry put them 2-1 up at half-time. After the break the pace dropped somewhat with chances few and far between, Scott Boden made it 3-1 to the visitors midway through the half, with neither side producing much else that threatened either keeper. In 2010 Sheffi eld got the better of a young Chesterfield XI, which included another player who would later wear Club colours, with Jack Waddle appearing as a second half substitute. Ash Burbeary was in the thick of the action early as he hit home a 20 yarder to give Sheffi eld the lead, missed a penalty and then put Club 2-0 up with another fine long range effort. Following a strange incident involving the Chesterfield manager John Sheridan threatening to abandon the game following a coming together between Andrew Gascoigne and one of his players, Greg Wright added another for Club to see them 3-0 up at the break. Chesterfield fought back with 2 goals from Jordan Bowery but in the final minutes Brian Cusworth headed home to wrap up to the 4-2 win. A pre-season meeting took place in 2014 when Sheffi eld ran out as comfortable 2-0 winners over a young but hardworking Chesterfield side. A goal in each half from Jahmal Smith saw Club, including several trialists, home to victory. Last season a strong visiting side won 4-1 here when Ian Evatt, Kristian Dennis and Dion Donahue put Chesterfield in control; Club did pull a goal back but Ricky German, later to appear briefly in Sheffi eld colours, completed the scoring for a convincing victory. This season the Spireites have appeared here twice, with a strong team winning 5-1 in July, and a younger outfit coming from 2-0 down to beat Club 3-2 in November.
