Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

ww.sheffieldfc.com

On behalf of everyone at Sheffield FC, I’d like to welcome you to this afternoon’s FA Women’s National League match against our visitors, Middlesbrough WFC. It’s the first time since March 2011 that Middlesbrough have played a competitive match at the Home of Football, and it’s good to be able to welcome them back here. The challenge they present us is significant as ‘Boro is a club has continued to make progress year on year in recent seasons, finishing in the top three for the past two seasons in the FA WPL under the management of Kelsey Byrne and Lindsey Stephenson, the latter playing for the visitors the last time Middlesbrough played here. We know we’ll have to be at our very best to compete with a team which possesses quality and experience from back to front. The past couple of months have arguably been amongst the hardest that Sheffi eld FC Ladies has had to face in its 15 year history. The Club’s decision to withdraw the team from the FA WSL due to the financial demands has had a devastating effect on the rise and rise of the team, with staff and players leaving for clubs who, in the main, have been selected to compete in the FA Women’s Championship (the new name for WSL 2) in spite of not earning the right to do so through their football. For those staff and players that have remained, a massive rebuilding operation is required. A good number of the development team players from last season have remained, and we’ve added some experience and brought back some former players, to attempt to get the Club back on an even footing, and re-establish it as a place where women’s football has always been played for the right reasons, and has resulted in deserved and considerable success. In spite of the result last Sunday against Huddersfield Town, which was a completely fair one, we showed our ability to adapt and work to a specific plan alongside the gritty and honest work ethic that our Club is built upon. We are under no illusions that we have a lot of work to do and that each match will highlight key learning points, but the attitude of the players has been open and receptive to that which is vital if we’re to progress as a group. Today, we can expect another stern test of our resolve whilst we also aim to improve our attacking output, which should make for a good entertaining game of football with two honest teams looking to move the ball. Thanks again for your support and I hope you enjoy the match. Kyle O’Reilly First team manager

In S18 Today... Middlesbrough Women

ww.sheffieldfc.com

Originally formed in 1976, Middlesbrough Ladies FC started life as Cleveland Spartans, and was coached in the early days by then Middlesbrough FC players Mark Proctor and David Hodgson.

In their 42 year history, the Club has played in several different leagues, in which they have enjoyed extensive success including eight league wins and eight league cup wins. The club has also won the North Riding Women’s County Cup on seven occasions, most recently in 2014/15. Also included in their long list of achievements are finalists in the Women’s FA Cup in 1982, two FA Cup semi-finals and several quarter-finals appearances. In 1997, the club had the honour of playing at Wembley Stadium before the Middlesbrough v Chelsea men’s FA Cup Final, beating Chelsea Ladies 4-2 in front of a packed stadium. The team had varying success in the Northern Combination League for the next few seasons, narrowly missing out on promotion three years in a row until, in 2001/02, they finally clinched the title and stepped up into the FA Women’s Premier League Northern Division. At the start of their first season in the Premier League Northern Division, Middlesbrough Football Club officially ‘adopted’ the Ladies team and they became known as Middlesbrough FC Ladies. The team enjoyed several great seasons, the highlight of which was taking on Arsenal Ladies (then the League and FA Cup Winners) in the FA Cup at Middlesbrough’s adopted home of Billingham Synthonia, losing in what was a close fought contest with a crowd of over 500 watching. Unfortunately, the 2005/06 season resulted in relegation for Middlesbrough FC Ladies, going down to the Northern Women’s Combination League from which they narrowly failed to go straight back up. Middlesbrough finished in the top four of the Northern Combination League for the five consecutive seasons and, in fact, have never been out of the top five in the seven seasons they have spent there. In September 2010, Middlesbrough FC Ladies were invited to North Korea in recognition of the special relationship resulting from the support given to the Koreans by the Boro’ fans during the 1966 World Cup, when the national side famously beat Italy in a game at Ayresome Park. The four day trip included two games against Korean sides April 25 and Kalmaegi which were not only watched by massive crowds at the games, but by 23 million people on national TV!! Also during the trip, the Ladies team met surviving members of the 1966 World Cup squad at a reception hosted by the British Ambassador. Marrie Wieczorek (pictured), originally a talented central midfielder for the side, oversaw the trip and was manager at the Club for some 20 years during much of the early development of Middlesbrough FCL. She was welcomed back as honorary president/chairman in 2012. With the reorganisation of the FA Women’s Premier League following the addition of a second division to the FA Women’s Super League for the 2014 season, Middlesbrough found themselves in Division One North of the FA WPL for the 2014/15 season, finishing in fourth place. 12 months later, they won the title, and were promoted to the Northern Premier Division for the start of the 2016/17 season.

A runners-up place to Blackburn Rovers in 2016/17 was followed up just last season with a third placed finish, and Middlesbrough commence this season once again as strong title contenders who will certainly be up there come the end of the campaign. Current manager, Kelsey Byrne (pictured), starts her fourth season at Middlesbrough WFC, with the UEFA ‘A’ licence coach also heading up Teesside’s Regional Talent Club. Ones To Watch Middlesbrough Women Rebekah Bass Defence Played: 29, Goals: 6 Full-back Becky Bass joined Middlesbrough during the 2015/16 season, helping the club to the Northern Division 1 title that season. She started to make a name for herself as a 16-year old in a very good Leeds United side, playing alongside the likes of Millie Bright and Amy Turner. Bass was picked up by Sunderland ahead of the inaugural 2014 FA WSL 2 season and featured heavily in Mick Mulhern’s title winning side that year, and the club’s superb 2015 season in WSL 1. In 2016, Bass had a spell at IBV in Iceland, which included scoring the winning goal in the league cup final, before returning to the UK and joining her current side. Emma Kelly Midfield/Forward Played: 32, Goals: 5 Emma Kelly was a product of Teesside Girls’ Centre of Excellence, but joined Sunderland aged 16 in 2013, and played for the Black Cats in both FA WSL 1 and 2. Starting out in the development squad, she quickly broke into the first team, and enjoyed three seasons with the club under both Mick Mulhern and Carlton Fairweather. The England youth international left the Black Cats for Middlesbrough WFC at the end of the 2016 WSL season, and has been a superb addition to Kelsey Byrne’s squad. Still only 21, Kelly has been named as captain of Middlesbrough for this season.

Tyler Dodds Midfield/Forward Played: 13, Goals: 1 Searching for increased playing time, Tyler Dodds joined the club in November last year having previously spent time in the FA WSL with Durham and Sunderland. With appearances for England WU20s, Dodds also travelled to Taipai last summer to represent GB Women’s Football at the World University Games having studied at Northumbria University. The strong and quick young attacker is sure to have a big impact at Middlesbrough this season, and is definitely one to watch this afternoon.

FA Women’s National League Week 1 Review It was business as usual for the reigning Northern Premier Division champions, Blackburn Rovers, whose thrashing of Doncaster Rovers Belles sees them at the top of the Northern Premier Division once more. Sunderland AFC 0-1 Fylde Former Everton and Sheffield FC striker, Emily Hollinshead (pictured), scored the only goal of the clash of the week-end as her new club Fylde beat Sunderland in front of 190 supporters at the Hetton Stadium. Hollinshead’s 34th minute strike came just ten minutes after Sunderland thought they’d taken the lead, sending the large crowd into raptures, only for the goal to be disallowed for offside. Nottingham Forest 3-0 Bradford City Nottingham Forest marked their move back to Carlton Town with a home win on the opening day of the new season. After an attritional first half, the hosts scored all of the match’s three goals after the break to register an important three points against City, including a goal on her competitive debut for ex-Derby County defender Georgia Hewitt. Middlesbrough 0-3 Derby County Long-serving Rams’ forward Nicole Ledgister opened the scoring for Derby County as they got their new season off the perfect side with a difficult away match at Middlesbrough, third place last season, which was perhaps the most surprising result of the week-end. Veteran Andi Bell added a second before the break, and new signing Jodie Redgrave sealed the points five minutes before full-time. Sheffield FC v Middlesbrough WFC FA WNL Northern Premier 26.08.18

Doncaster Rovers Belles 0-9 Blackburn Rovers The day was always going to be tough for Doncaster Rovers Belles, dropping out of WSL2 after winning the title last season and having to witness an exodus of players over the summer, but Blackburn Rovers (pictured) rubbed salt into the wound as they ran riot at Belles’ new ground, Rossington Main FC. Rovers’ top scorer last season, Saffron Jordan, notched up a hat-trick, whilst Kayleigh McDonald and former Sheffield FC forward Lagan Makin both bagged braces. Hull City 0-4 Stoke City It was a tough introduction to life in the FA WNL for newly promoted Hull City as they went down at home to perennial title contenders Stoke City (pictured). An even game throughout saw Stoke score at just the right times to dispirit the Northern Division newcomers with two goals each side of the break, the pick a long distance strike from Faye McCoy.

FAThis Women’s National League Weekend’s Fixtures League leaders Blackburn Rovers are the team without a game this Sunday, whilst Guiseley Vixens get their season underway having had to sit out last week-end. Match of The Week Guiseley Vixens v Huddersfield Town Guiseley Vixens (pictured) kick their season off with a local derby against Huddersfield Town in what could be the closest contest of the week-end. Ex-Terriers boss, Glen Preston, now manager at Guiseley, has brought some good signings to his team which just avoided relegation last season on goal difference. With cash to splash, midfielder Sophie Walton and goalkeeper Bethan Davies (who made some appearances for the club last season) have been signed from Doncaster Rovers Belles, as has Mercy Darkoah from WSL2 side Durham. Former Sheffield FC attacker, Ella Hartley, and former Manchester City development team player, Eleanor Ciesielski, have also joined the Vixens over the summer, all of whom will bring significant improvement to Preston’s squad. Huddersfield Town are one of the league’s perennial under-achievers, capable on their day of beating the best, but also losing to the worst, illustrated last season by losing to relegated West Bromwich Albion yet being one of only two teams to beat champions Blackburn Rovers. The Terriers started slowly against Sheffield last Sunday, but were always the better team and should have won the game by a lot more than they did. They have added prolific striker Laura Elford from Bradford City to their squad this season, absent in Sunday’s win v Sheffield, and if she can reproduce her 20+ goals for the Bantams last season, Town could well have the season everyone knows them to be capable of producing. Prediction: draw…but has the potential to go either way! Other Predictions Stoke City v Doncaster Rovers Belles Hull City v Derby County Fylde v Nottingham Forest Bradford City v Sunderland AFC

Huddersfield Town 2 Sheffield FC 0 FA Women’s National League Stafflex Arena, Shelley - Att: 93 Sunday, 19th August 2018 Two late strikes from Huddersfield Town were enough to secure victory for the hosts on the opening day of the new FA Women’s National League season. A Katie Nutter opener broke the deadlock in the 73rd minute, while Brittany Sanderson sealed the victory five minutes from time to send the new look Sheffield squad home emptyhanded. The game itself started in slow fashion, both teams feeling their way into the game and adjusting back to the pace of competition football.

Huddersfield asked the first questions of their opponents, continually looking for the craft of forwards Kate Mallin, Sarah Danby and Katie Nutter, but Club weren’t to be deterred and stood up to the test, restricting any attempts to longer range shots initially. It wasn’t long until Sheffield found their own opportunities with Ellie White and Molly Havard profiting from their hard work and catching the Huddersfield midfield out, but both saw their efforts thwarted by the Town ‘keeper, Laura Carter. In a back-and-forth exchange, it was set pieces providing the best opportunities. Town went very close on a couple of corner attempts, but weren’t able to make the aerial attempts count with ‘keeper Hobson showing great presence between the sticks to pull off a couple of excellent close range saves. With the score level it was all to play for in the second half, and Huddersfield immediately started the brighter – an error right after the restart gifting the Terriers an opportunity but were unable to make the chance count. Huddersfield, buoyed by the start, moved to make the breakthrough and further unsettled the Sheffield team. Mallin again went close only to be stopped by Meg Tinsley heroics, with Leigha Goodwin and Rosa Neary keeping the opposition at arm’s length, with substantial opportunities at a premium. Entering the late stages of the game, legs started go and the game began to open up. And Town pounced: first, a low driven cross to the back post was met by the opportunistic Katie Nutter who squeezed the ball beyond the defiant Hobson who only managed to get a late hand to the ball. Sheffield hit back straight away with York RTC graduate, Jade Butcher, almost earning her rewards for chasing down a loose ball, but unfortunately the 16-year old wasn’t quite able to squeeze the ball home to level the scores. Sheffield continued to push in search of an equalizer, but it was Huddersfield who struck again to put the game to bed, when Brittany Sanderson poked home a rebounded Arianne Parnham shot from four yards out. A reflective Sheffield FC manager, Kyle O’Reilly, remarked: “This was a tough introduction for the group coming up against a great Huddersfield squad. We had to settle into the game early, and I felt we did that.” “We rode our luck at times, especially early in the second half, but even then the players upped their levels and stuck together. In the end, Huddersfield deservedly got the result, but we can take a lot of positives from the game whilst also recognising the areas where we need to improve moving forward.” “It can be easy for young players to throw the towel in when things don’t go their way, but everyone rolled their sleeves up and persisted with their jobs, which is one of our biggest takeaways considering how young this group is.” Sheffield FC v Middlesbrough WFC FA WNL Northern Premier 26.08.18

FA Women’s National League Cup Determining Round Preview

Next Sunday sees this season’s FA Women’s National League Cup kick off with all 72 teams in action in the Determining Round, designed to whittle the numbers down to take the competition forward in to the Preliminary Round. Sheffield FC Ladies famously won the trophy (then the FA WPL Cup) back in 2013/14 (pictured) beating Cardiff City 6-2 in the final at Burton Albion’s Pirelli Stadium, and were runners up the following season, losing on penalties to Charlton Athletic. Sheffield will begin their campaign this season with a very tough away tie at Stoke City, one of three all-Northern Premier Division ties in the northern section. Our opponents today, Middlesbrough, also face an away tie against Northern Premier Division opponents in Huddersfield Town, whilst Hull City and Bradford City clash in the other one. The Northern Premier Division teams have been drawn as below with ties all being played on Sunday 2 September: Last season’s League Cup champions, Blackburn Rovers (pictured), will begin the defence of their crown with a home tie against Liverpool Feds, many people’s tip to win the Northern Division 1 title this season. The winners of the 36 ties will progress to the next round, whilst the losers will go forward to the FA WNL Plate competition. This was won by West Ham United last season who beat Luton Town 5-0 in the final. The next round of the League Cup and the first round of the Plate will both take place on Sunday 14 October. Sheffield FC 3 Tadcaster Albion 4 Evo-Stik East Division Home of Football, Dronfield - Att: 240 Tuesday, 21st August 2018 Sheffield FC made it two defeats on the trot, as they lost 4-3 at home to Tadcaster, in an errorstrewn game that was a pleasure to watch for the neutrals in the 240 crowd Tadcaster took the lead on 4 minutes when a speculative ball over the top by Billy Whitehouse was misjudged by Josh Ingham, the ball bouncing over the keeper’s head, giving Aiden Savory the embarrassingly easy task of tapping the ball into the empty net.

Sheffield drew level on 16 minutes with some fine play on the left, debutant Charlie Wakefield slicing the defence open, giving Waide Fairhurst the opportunity to do what he does best – finishing with a cool chip past the keeper. Moments later Turton redeemed his earlier mistake, after Casey Stewart dispossessed Daz Winter to leave the Tadcaster man free on goal, only a brave save from the keeper kept parity. Ten minutes after the restart Turton made a miraculous save from Lumsden, after Savory blocked a clearance with what looked like his hands, the ball played through with the keeper making a reaction save from the Albion striker.

Seconds later Club went straight up the other end, Charlie Wakefield played through to Ify Ofoegbu, with the loanee squaring the ball, and Mitchell Dunne scuffing the ball home from ten yards to make it 2-1. Sheffield had the chance to make it three with fifteen minutes to go, as Ofoegbu was pulled back in the area, with Referee Martyn Fryer pointing straight to the spot – from the penalty kick Fairhurst stuttered, before Ingham chose the right way to save. That was to prove costly on 78 minutes, as Casey Stewart forced the ball home to make it 2-2. Seconds later it was 3-2 to the visitors, the ball dropped by Turton in the box, gifting Lumsden a tap-in. It was 3-3 almost straight away, as Mitchell Dunne spectacularly brought the ball down, volleying home an unbelievable shot. The game was won with another gift for the visitors five minutes from time, as Lumsden got behind the defence, and chipped the ball over the advancing Turton to make it 4-3. Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

Sheffield FC Ladies Sheffield FC Ladies was formed in 2003 when previous team Norton Ladies affiliated with the oldest football club in the world, Sheffield FC. The Club started life in Division 1 East of the Yorkshire & Humberside Regional WFL, the bottom level of the women’s pyramid of football at the time, which became the North East Regional WFL in 2005/06. Having finished third, then runners up for two successive seasons, Sheffield finally won their first league title in 2007/08, and within the space of two more seasons, were promoted into the Northern Combination WFL, which they won at the first attempt in 2010/11. Sheffield’s debut season at FA Women’s Premier League level could hardly have gone much better as Sheffield finished the year as Northern Division runners up behind eventual champions Manchester City. The team picked up silverware for the third season running, courtesy of a very first win in the Sheffield & Hallamshire Women’s Challenge Cup. Sheffield went one better in the league in 2012/13 as they lifted the FA WPL Northern Division title for the very first time, losing just one league match in total and finishing nine points clear of Nottingham Forest. They also repeated their success in the S&H Women’s Challenge Cup, beating Rotherham United 6-0 in the final. With promotion to the FA Women’s Super League not possible, Sheffield were forced to defend their FA WPL Northern Division crown in 2013/14, which they managed to do with five matches to go, ultimately finishing 15 points clear of runners up Preston North End. They added a third successive S&H Women’s Challenge Cup, but the highlight of the season was winning the FA Women’s Premier League Cup by beating Cardiff City 6-2 in the final, crowning off an historic treble trophy winning season.

History 2003-2018 In 2014/15, the first team missed out on a second successive FA WPL Cup losing on penalties in the final to Charlton Athletic after a 0-0 draw, but the Sheffield & Hallamshire Women’s Challenge Cup was won for a fourth year running. The Club enjoyed a best ever run in the FA Women’s Cup by reaching the Fifth Round. Sheffield FC won a third successive FA WPL Northern Division title, to secure a place in a first ever Championship Play Off Final in which an injury time winner saw Sheffield beat Portsmouth to become the first club to gain promotion on merit to the top flight of the game: the FA Women’s Super League. Under new first team manager Zoe Johnson, Sheffield secured a respectable fifth place finish in their debut FA WSL season and reached the quarter-finals of the Continental Tyres. The development team finished as runners up in both the FA WSL Northern Division and the League Cup, losing 2-1 in extra time to Arsenal. The 2017 Spring Series was less of a success for Sheffield as they finished one place off the bottom in ninth, and were unlucky to go out of the FA Women’s Cup at the fourth round stage to a controversial penalty in a 1-0 defeat to Doncaster Rovers Belles. But the team kick started again for the 2017/18 season having change back to a winter season, with Sheffield once again finishing top half in fifth place, beating their previous points total. With the FA’s continued agenda to drive the financial burden of clubs competing at Tier 2 up and up, Sheffield were forced to make the incredibly difficult decision to withdraw from the newly constituted FA Women’s Championship before the 2018/19 season, and thus begin this season in the new FA Women’s National League
