Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

Welcome... Manager’s Notes

ww.sheffieldfc.com

On behalf of everyone at Sheffield FC, we’d like to welcome you to this afternoon’s FA Women’s National League match against our visitors today, Sunderland AFC Ladies. After last Sunday’s performance, it’s a case of ‘out of the frying pan into the fire’ as we take on Sunderland this afternoon. They’re a club in a similar situation to ourselves, in that they’ve found themselves in Tier 3 for non-footballing reasons, but are a club with a great set up and history in the women’s game.

Sunderland seem to have grown over the recent weeks and are scoring more freely, putting five past Doncaster Roves Belles just last week, and three past Middlesbrough the Wednesday before. So we have to respond in a mature manner and stand up to the challenge this week. We have a great deal of potential in the ranks, but we must learn to overcome setbacks very quickly, whilst still remaining confident in their own ability. If we get the second half Sheffield from last week, we will have a good game on our hands, that’s for sure. I’ve a lot of trust and belief in this young group and, despite the hardships we will undoubtedly face over the coming months, I’m backing them to ultimate prosper. We’ve a tough run of fixtures coming up and a strong reaction this Sunday is a must. As a Club, we’d like to thank you for your support this afternoon – we really appreciate you continuing to back the club through this difficult transition period, and your support is such an encouragement to the players and staff.

Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

In S18 Today... Sunderland AFC Ladies

ww.sheffieldfc.com

Sunderland AFC Ladies began life as a five -a-side team in 1989 called The Kestrels and after progressing to eleven aside the following season, won the Yorkshire and Humberside Regional WFL in 1990. Over the next decade, they competed in the Northern Premier as Cowgate Kestrels, RTM Newcastle Kestrels, Blyth Spartans Kestrels and East Durham Houghall Kestrels, but in 1999, the club merged with another team, Sunderland Ladies, to become Sunderland Women's FC and, at the end of that season, won promotion to the FA Women's Premier League National Division.

The new club was originally financed as part of the established professional Sunderland AFC men's club, but following financial troubles in 2004, the women's side was forced to become financially independent. Sunderland AFC, however, provided the kit and the home ground. The club had two seasons in which they narrowly missed out getting back into the FA WPL National Division, but in 2003/04, they finally managed to win the Northern Division again and, for the first time in their history, they reached the quarter-finals of the FA Women’s Cup, only losing to a strong Charlton team in the last few minutes of the game. Sunderland enjoyed three seasons in the topflight before relegation in 2007, leading to the club losing a number of their international players the following season, but after a disappointing start to the campaign, Sunderland finished third in the Northern Division.

2008/09 was one of the most successful seasons for the club, gaining both an increased local and national profile. Sunderland finished as runners up in the FA Women's Cup final, losing 2-1 to National Division Champions Arsenal, and also secured promotion back to the topflight after winning the FA WPL Northern Division. The club finished a very creditable fifth the following season. After missing out in their bid for entry to the newly formed FA Women’s Super League in 2011, Sunderland Women had their most successful season ever. They won the FA WPL National Division in 2010/11 by seven clear points as well as reaching the quarter-finals of both the League Cup and FA Women’s Cup, only losing to Arsenal in the latter in extra time. Now exerting their dominance on the women’s game in the north, Sunderland won the FA Women’s Premier League for a second consecutive campaign in 2011/12, whilst also adding the League Cup to their trophy cabinet, beating Leeds United 2-1 in the final. In the 2012/13 season, the women secured their third consecutive title with striker Beth Mead winning the division’s top scorer award for a second consecutive campaign. The Lady Black Cats were accepted into the FA Women’s Super League ahead of the 2014 season with the creation of a second division. Sunderland Ladies FC was formally integrated as part of the Sunderland AFC structure ahead of that season, and the ladies proceeded to win the FA WSL 2 league title at the first attempt, clinching the title on the final day of the season with a 4-0 victory over Millwall Lionesses. Carlton Fairweather took over from long-serving manager, Mick Mulhern, for Sunderland's inaugural season in the top flight and led the side to an impressive fourth place finish in 2015. The club grew their attendances by 123% and Sunderland Ladies collected the WSL1 Club of the Year award at the FA Women's Football Awards. Striker Beth Mead collected a trio of awards on the night including Vauxhall Young England Player of the Year, Players' Player of the Year, and FA WSL1 Top Goalscorer. Head Coach Melanie Copeland took charge of the team in 2017, having been assistant coach for the previous three seasons in the FA WSL. Copeland, a former Sunderland player, was an outstanding striker during her playing years, winning the golden boot on many occasions. She led the team to a 5th place finish in the FA WSL Spring Series, before enjoying a strong season in 2017/18 in which the team finished in seventh place, just one spot behind Liverpool. Due to financial uncertainties, Sunderland did not apply for a licence at the first time of asking to continue in the FA WSL for 2018/19. By the second round of applications, in March 2018, Sunderland were in a position to confirm they could support full-time professional football but their application was rejected, as was a subsequent appeal, in favour of other clubs. In spite of this, Sunderland have managed to hold onto some very talented players and staff, and will be focused on pushing for an instant return to the top two divisions of the women’s game, and we wish them well to do so.

Ones To Watch Sunderland AFC 2. Danielle Brown Defender Played: 36, Clean sheets: 8 Graduating from the Teesside Girls’ Centre of Excellence, Danielle Brown signed for Sunderland’s development squad in 2015, and was part of the squad that won the FA WSL Development Northern Division title that season. With consistently impressive performances at that level which included six goals in 13 appearances, Brown then stepped up to Sunderland’s first team for the 2016 FA WSL season, aged just 17-years old. She has spent the past three seasons competing against the best teams in the country in FA WSL 1. The talented young defender has represented her country at both WU17s and U19s level and will be a key performer for the Black Cats this season. 7. Keira Ramshaw Forward Played: 166, Goals: 52 Currently Sunderland’s most experienced player, Keira Ramshaw has played for the club since her teenage years, making her debut first team appearance in 2009/10. She has played in or around the top level of the women’s game since then, first with Mick Mulhern’s all-conquering FA WPL National Division title winning side, and latterly in FA WSL 1 where she was one of the most regularly capped players last season. The Sunderland-born forward works tirelessly down the right flank and has a great eye for goal. She is this season’s first team captain, and their current top scorer, and is a hugely respected player wide and far in the women’s game. 9. Bridget Galloway Forward Played: 27, Goals: 9 Having worked her way through Sunderland’s Regional Talent Centre into the club’s development team, Bridget Galloway broke into the first team on a permanent basis for the 2017/18 FA WSL 1 season and has elected to remain at the club this season in spite of Sunderland dropping down into the FA Women’s National League. Still just 19-years old, Galloway is a pacey forward who has already proven she compete at the top level of the women’s game, and has represented England at WU19s level. With three goals already this season, her goals will no doubt be a big part of Sunderland’s success this season.

FA Women’s National League Week 4 Review

Week 1 Review

After round 1 of the League Cup, it was back to the business of the league last Sunday with a full schedule for week 3 of the season. Sunderland AFC 5-0 Doncaster Rovers Belles Sunderland climbed up to third in the table thanks to a strong home win against Doncaster Rovers Belles who had Emily Batty to thank once again for keeping the score down. Captain Keira Ramshaw got the hosts going just before the half-hour mark, with Jordan Atkinson bagging a first of the season as she reacted quickest after Bridget Galloway’s freekick had rattled the woodwork. Sunderland didn’t have to wait long for a third either, with Georgia Gibson (pictured) smashing home from 18 yards before Emily Hutchinson slotted home a fourth to top-off a goal-laden 13 minute spell. It was much of the same in the second half as the Black Cats applying most of the pressure in a dominant performance. They only had one more goal to show for their efforts though a Gibson corner was bundled into the Belles net by one of their own defenders. Stoke City 7-3 Bradford City League leaders, Stoke City, remained in top spot in an unexpectedly tough match v Bradford City who certainly made their mark on the Potters. The hosts took an early lead through Nicola Hudson but Bradford fought back with two goals in ten minutes from Shirley Murphy and Demi Wisher but the wind up Stoke, before a couple of trademark goals from Faye McCoy restored the hosts’ lead going into the break. A sluggish midweek display v Derby County was put firmly behind Stoke in the second half though with Ashleigh Hayes’ early goal giving Stoke the upper hand which became even more accentuated thanks to goals from Emily Owen (pictured), substitute Hannah Keryakoplis and then McCoy completing her hat-trick. Zoe Roberts’ wonderful free-kick was a fitting goal to draw to and end an enthralling contest, and nothing more than Bradford deserved for a fighting performance against a strong opponent, a performance which should give them much encouragement going forward. Middlesbrough 3-2 Huddersfield Town Huddersfield Town slipped to a second league defeat of the season as Middlesbrough enjoyed a battling 3-2 win in front of a strong home crowd. Town had beaten ‘Boro 3-0 in the League Cup just a fortnight before, but the then absent Holly Manders was to open the scoring for the hosts with just 9 minutes on the clock. Brittany Sanderson levelled things up though just a few minutes later, and Huddersfield had their chances to draw ahead: Katie Nutter hit the bar and Sarah Danby and Kate Mallin both went close. Emily Scarr scored early in the second half for Middlesbrough though, leaving Town to chase the game with ‘Boro happy to pack key areas and soak up pressure. When the excellent Manders bagged a second with just a few minutes remaining, the game should have been over, but a goalkeeping error by Laura Wareham allowed Danby to bundle the ball into the net albeit too little too late for Huddersfield. Guiseley Vixens 2-0 Nottingham Forest A second win of the week for Guiseley Vixens lifted them out of the relegation zone and up into seventh place as a goal in each half against Nottingham Forest earnt the hosts a 2-0 victory. Having annihilated Bradford City midweek thanks to a 7-1 score line, Guiseley’s manner of victory was less convincing against a battling Forest side who could have taken the lead through Katie Middleton but for a strong hand from Vixens’ goalkeeper Bethan Davies. Lizzie Auker broke the deadlock on the half hour mark, bending a shot into the top right corner from distance. Guiseley had much of the pressure second half but Forest went close from a free-kick which required a great close-range save from Davies to keep the Vixens ahead. The hosts put the game to bed ten minutes from time when Ellie Hall reacted first to a loose ball at the back post, stabbing it home for a 2-0 win. Hull City 5-2 Fylde The shock result of the week-end saw Hull City pick up their first win of the new season with a convincing 5-2 win over a strong Fylde team. The Northern Premier newcomers were not at all over-awed by their opponents and were good value for their win. A 3-0 half-time lead courtesy of goals by captain Jo Symington (pictured), Emily Smith and Misty Russell put the Tigresses well in control, but a revved up Fylde scored early in the second half as Nikki Berko buried from close range. Some Hull nerves were allayed midway through the half when Smith bagged a spectacular second goal of the afternoon, only for Jenna Carroll to reduce the arrears again for Fylde from the spot. Ellie Tanser put the game beyond doubt though with just over ten minutes remaining, a result which puts Hull one place above Fylde in the table. Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

ww.sheffieldfc.com

FAThis Women’s National League Weekend’s Fixtures There’s a slightly reduced league programme this afternoon as Fylde are in action in the Lancashire County Cup, whilst Guiseley Vixens play Blackburn Rovers in one of eight ties in the Preliminary Round of the League Cup. There’s no match for leaders Stoke City or Middlesbrough who both won last Sunday, and would probably like to keep momentum going. A win for Sunderland at Sheffield FC will see them take over from the Potters at the top of the table.

MATCH OF THE WEEK Nottingham Forest v Hull City Hull City will be full of confidence following on from their first league win of the season last Sunday v Fylde. The fact that they scored five goals in doing so too will give them a definite edge against a Nottingham Forest side are struggling to find the back of the net with three of their four goals scored in the league this season coming in one game v Bradford City. In spite of the goal drought, Forest have not been conceding boatloads either, but they have yet to face a side in the top five. This will therefore be a really interesting encounter: both teams currently lying on four points so a win would significantly boost morale and league placing, and put distance between the winners and the bottom two. Nottingham Forest boss, Graham Abercrombie (pictured), has been typically honest about his side as a ‘work in progress’, with a lot of the old guard gone and new, young faces in. No lack of talent is offset, at the moment, by inexperience, but a super attitude and plenty of fighting spirit are hallmarks of a side that won’t take long before things start to click. Prediction: Hull City win Sheffield FC v Sunderland AFC Ladies FA WNL Northern Premier 23.09.18

Sheffield FC 0 Blackburn Rovers 7 FA Women’s National League North Home of Football, Dronfield Sunday, 16th September 2018 League Champions for the past two seasons, Blackburn Rovers, showed their class as they put Sheffield FC to the sword in a comprehensive 7-0 win at the Home of Football, inflicting Sheffield’s worst league defeat since their inaugural season in 2003/04. An early onslaught from the visitors brought Sheffield back down to earth after two consecutive wins.

Saffron Jordan struck on three minutes with a superb turning volley into the top corner, opening the flood gates as Ellie Stewart and Lagan Makin put the game to bed within the first six minutes, with Sheffield over-awed by their distinguished opponents. Lisa Giampalma almost responded after 15 minutes when a good Ellie White delivery found the head of the winger, who in turn beat the goalkeeper with a fine header only to be denied by the woodwork. Blackburn continued to show their class and ruthlessness though, and on the half hour mark Natasha Flint, given too much time, powered a fourth into the back of the net with ease. Minutes later, the England U23 international was on the scoresheet again thanks to a super team goal: Jess Holbrook playing provider for Flint to bury past the helpless Liz Hobson for a 5-0 lead. Blackburn weren’t finished there, and Holbrook would cap off a dominant first half by adding a sixth just before the break. Sheffield FC v Sunderland AFC Ladies FA WNL Northern Premier 23.09.18

With the game dead and buried, Club came out brighter in the second half following some honest half-time words, in a bid to limit their embarrassment and rescue some pride. Millee Clarke and Giampalma provided high energy in the forward lines, and combined well to create a couple of openings, and overall, the team looked to move the ball with more idea and purpose but ultimately to no avail. Flint almost grabbed her hat-trick but was to be denied by the cross bar, while Makin added a seventh for Blackburn, with her second of the game in the final ten minutes. A dejected Sheffield boss, Kyle O’Reilly, offered a summary of his thoughts post -match:

“After a positive week with two wins on the bounce, Blackburn Rovers proved themselves to be a number of levels above us today. If we were to ever get anything from the game, we had to be at our best and then a little bit more.” “Sadly we’ve not started well and found ourselves 3-0 down after six minutes. A mixture of complacency and fear I think held us back, especially first half, and teams like Blackburn will eat you alive if that’s the case.” “They came to us with massive amounts of experience and success at a senior level, both things we lack as a squad.” “Yet, they still ran themselves hard and maintained a high standard for 90 minutes, and we have to learn from their mentality and work ethic very quickly or we run the risk of similar outcomes as we now have a very tough few fixtures against the leagues stronger sides.” Photos courtesy of Paula Johnson. Club Action Men’sin First Team

Sheffield FC 3 Stocksbridge PS 1 Integro League Cup Round One Home of Football Stadium, Dronfield Tuesday, 18th September 2018

Sheffield FC Men’s First Team eased into the second round of the Integro League Cup, as the beat local rivals Stocksbridge Park Steels 3-1 in an entertaining tie. Both sides fielded vastly changed sides from their weekend league games, taking the opportunity to look at new signings and fringe players, along with promising youngsters that have impressed in each's youth set ups. Club made the ideal start, as after just two minutes Waide Fairhurst (pictured) made a good run across the face of the goal, before unleashing a great finish to make it 1-0. Sheffield looked likely to extend their lead, with debutant Johnny Pugh delivering some decent free-kicks, and also going close with a shot of his own.

It was Steels who levelled on 13 minutes however, following some poor defending from a cross on the left, Kane Swinburn was allowed to head home unchallenged from close range. Josh Turton made a great save shortly after to stop the visitors taking the lead, bravely stopping an effort from Lewis Witham, whilst Matt Roney went close with a shot at the opposite end. Ex-Clubbie keeper Jordan Greaves made a fine stop from a rasping James Gregory shot, with Pugh once again going close on a couple more occasions, whilst Stocksbridge struck the post on the half-hour mark, following Josh Reaney taking advantage of more slack defending,

The second half saw Sheffield far more adventurous, with Ant Mackie heading close from a Gregory cross, with Gregory once more turning provider for Pugh to force another save from Greaves. Sheffield's youngsters gave a good account of themselves, with Alfie Eagle and Iren Wilson combining well to go close, unfortunately not troubling the visiting keeper. On 68 minutes Club took the lead, a free-kick awarded in the danger area just outside the area, Pugh stepping up to drive it into the top corner. It should have been three moments later another free-kick into the box should have been buried, with Julian Lawrence just unable to connect his header, whilst Pugh went even closer with another drive that struck the bar with Greaves well-beaten. The tie was wrapped up on 77 minutes following good work from Sam Wright and Iren Wilson combining, with Wilson picking out Gregory with an excellent pass, who in turn completed the move with a super-cool finish that was curled round the keeper. It ended on a sour note for the hosts, following a small stramash between both sides, with Ant Mackie seeing red for his reaction in the argument. Red and Black Review 2018/19 Season

ww.sheffieldfc.com

Sheffield FC Ladies Sheffield FC Ladies was formed in 2003 when previous team Norton Ladies affiliated with the oldest football club in the world, Sheffield FC. The Club started life in Division 1 East of the Yorkshire & Humberside Regional WFL, the bottom level of the women’s pyramid of football at the time, which became the North East Regional WFL in 2005/06. Having finished third, then runners up for two successive seasons, Sheffield finally won their first league title in 2007/08, and within the space of two more seasons, were promoted into the Northern Combination WFL, which they won at the first attempt in 2010/11. Sheffield’s debut season at FA Women’s Premier League level could hardly have gone much better as Sheffield finished the year as Northern Division runners up behind eventual champions Manchester City. The team picked up silverware for the third season running, courtesy of a very first win in the Sheffield & Hallamshire Women’s Challenge Cup. Sheffield went one better in the league in 2012/13 as they lifted the FA WPL Northern Division title for the very first time, losing just one league match in total and finishing nine points clear of Nottingham Forest. They also repeated their success in the S&H Women’s Challenge Cup, beating Rotherham United 6-0 in the final. With promotion to the FA Women’s Super League not possible, Sheffield were forced to defend their FA WPL Northern Division crown in 2013/14, which they managed to do with five matches to go, ultimately finishing 15 points clear of runners up Preston North End. They added a third successive S&H Women’s Challenge Cup, but the highlight of the season was winning the FA Women’s Premier League Cup by beating Cardiff City 6-2 in the final, crowning off an historic treble trophy winning season.

History 2003-2018 In 2014/15, the first team missed out on a second successive FA WPL Cup losing on penalties in the final to Charlton Athletic after a 0-0 draw, but the Sheffield & Hallamshire Women’s Challenge Cup was won for a fourth year running. The Club enjoyed a best ever run in the FA Women’s Cup by reaching the Fifth Round. Sheffield FC won a third successive FA WPL Northern Division title, to secure a place in a first ever Championship Play Off Final in which an injury time winner saw Sheffield beat Portsmouth to become the first club to gain promotion on merit to the top flight of the game: the FA Women’s Super League. Under new first team manager Zoe Johnson, Sheffield secured a respectable fifth place finish in their debut FA WSL season and reached the quarter-finals of the Continental Tyres. The development team finished as runners up in both the FA WSL Northern Division and the League Cup, losing 2-1 in extra time to Arsenal. The 2017 Spring Series was less of a success for Sheffield as they finished one place off the bottom in ninth, and were unlucky to go out of the FA Women’s Cup at the fourth round stage to a controversial penalty in a 1-0 defeat to Doncaster Rovers Belles. But the team kick started again for the 2017/18 season having change back to a winter season, with Sheffield once again finishing top half in fifth place, beating their previous points total. With the FA’s continued agenda to drive the financial burden of clubs competing at Tier 2 up and up, Sheffield were forced to make the incredibly difficult decision to withdraw from the newly constituted FA Women’s Championship before the 2018/19 season, and thus begin this season in the new FA Women’s National League
