WELCOME TO MULLINER
SHERBORNE GIRLS - MULLINER
Welcome to Mulliner We are thrilled to have you here with us in Mulliner, and we really hope you will be happy here. Your final year is a something very special. It’s something that you have been working towards throughout your time at Sherborne Girls. Moving from your old house to Mulliner is a step towards your life beyond school but is also an important rite of passage in itself. A successful year will see you become the person you really want to be when you leave us. You will want to exercise independence, take personal responsibility for decisions and reflect on your academic and personal ambitions. Supporting and respecting each other as a strong family unit will be just as important; it’s also your chance to further solidify friendships that you’ll have for life. Our aim is for you to leave here confident, open-minded, considerate, and aware of your future capabilities. This booklet is a guide to living in Mulliner. We rely a great deal on trust in this House. In return for the trust we place in you and freedom we give you, we expect certain standards of behavior and maturity. This is all part of the process of learning good habits for life. We hope you enjoy your time here, and that your last year at Sherborne Girls will be the more memorable for it. This year is what you make of it and the whole Mulliner team is behind you! Mrs Cole Housemistress

Academic work
This is the most important year for academic work, and it is crucial that you keep up to date with deadlines. Therefore please be warned about the following two things:
2
• If you miss a lesson without the prior knowledge and permission of Mrs Cole or the Mulliner House Matron, you will get a Saturday night detention. If you feel ill or upset, please see the Matron or go to the Health Centre
• If a teacher contacts Mrs Cole to say that one or more pieces of work are late, then you will be gated until that work is either handed in to Mulliner or the teacher has emailed Mrs Cole to say they have the work
SHERBORNE GIRLS - MULLINER
Bedtimes
Birthdays
There are no ‘lights out’.
Please be sensible about birthday celebrations. Big parties have to be kept to the exeats and holidays.
However: • Public areas – must be vacated by 10.00pm (if you want to watch TV until this time, it is a good idea to get ready for bed beforehand) • You should be in your own room and ready for bed by 10.15-10.30pm. It is very inconsiderate to be showering and using the bathrooms after this time • The whole House must be quiet by 10.30pm, except on Saturdays when a little more leniency may prevail at the discretion of the duty staff
If you wish to go out for supper during term time this should be agreed at least 24 hours beforehand. Please note the normal number of people able to go out for supper is six. If your parents are going to be there, you may be able to invite more. Usually, you are only allowed out for a birthday supper on a Saturday evening or Sunday lunch.

Boys visiting from Sherborne School
Communication
All boys must enter the House by the front door, call on the member of staff on duty and be signed in. They should be tidily dressed and behave appropriately.
In a large and busy House this is vital: look at the whiteboard every time you come into the House.
NO BOYS ARE ALLOWED UPSTAIRS.
• Check your pigeonhole regularly
Boys are allowed to visit at the following times: • Mon-Fri – 5.00pm-6.00pm • Saturday – 2.30pm-5.30pm and 7.30pm-10.00pm • Sunday – 2.30pm-6.00pm • In Trinity Term Mon-Fri times may include a 9.00pm-9.30pm visit as well. All visitors to Mulliner should be acknowledged and made to feel welcome.
• Look at the ‘what’s on this week’ board regularly
• Attend all House meetings • Check your school email at least once a day • If you need to miss a lesson due to a university visit, complete a ‘Sixth Form University/College Visit Request form’ and ask Mrs Corran to sign it at least one week beforehand. It then needs to be given to Mrs Cole or the Mulliner Matron at least 24 hours beforehand, and permission needs to have been emailed in by your parents • Make sure we have your most up-to-date mobile number so you can be contacted as necessary
6
• Look in the School calendar so you know what is coming up

Day girls and day boarders You will have a space to call your own in Mulliner. If you are a day boarder, it is really helpful for us to have an idea of your likely weekly routine so we can book meals accordingly. There is a charge for the nights you stay over. Please remember to sign your overnight sheets. You are expected to be in School for 7.55am and you must sign in and attend House briefings. If you are late, then sign in at the School Office on your way to lessons. On Saturday you must arrive in time for the first lesson. You may leave School when you have finished all of your commitments (and it is after lessons), and you must sign out from House.
8
You are expected to take a proactive role in Mulliner, and support the House fully on formal occasions such as dining-in nights, charity events and inter-house competitions.
You are expected to attend ALL House meetings, year group meetings and School Prayers. If you cannot attend a House meeting, you need to excuse yourself in advance and catch up on the content of the meeting. If you are attending the JCR on a Saturday evening, you must leave from Mulliner and then return to Mulliner before going home. Please do not arrange to be collected from town. If you would like drinks wristbands for the JCR, then you must eat supper in Mulliner on the Saturday. If you stay in House after the JCR, you are expected to attend School Services if they are in the morning.
SHERBORNE GIRLS - MULLINER
Dress code During the School Day: • School suits are to be worn with jackets and black tights. In hot weather a shirt-sleeve order may be given, in which case jackets can be left off • Shoes should be black and preferably leather (so they can be cleaned), with a sensible heel. Platform, backless shoes, stilettos, trainers or trainer-like shoes are totally unacceptable • Hair should be brushed, tidy and off the face • Jewellery is to be discreet and appropriate. There should be only one pair of earrings worn, one earring per ear lobe. No studs or other piercings are to be worn on any other part of the body. You should not be wearing multiple necklaces or bracelets
• The tops worn under your School suit should be smart office wear; no logos or hoodies • You will need to wear your School shirt for formal occasions such as Abbey Services When going offsite: • You must look acceptably clean and tidy (at the discretion of the member of staff on duty) • Tracksuits are not to be worn into town or over to School for normal lessons – this includes the Art Block

Weekends
Exeats
Going home at the weekends is flexible and at the discretion of the Housemistress.
Exeats work the same as in other Houses. You are expected to wait until the end of the school day to go home at an exeat, even if you do not have timetabled lessons, as this is valuable study time.
In considering such requests, it is expected that you show a mature attitude to your studies, as you will not benefit from being away for the majority of weekends. You may not miss Sunday at School if there is an Abbey service. If you are going to be away at the weekend, you must ask permission from Mrs Cole by Wednesday evening. Parental permission should accompany this request, either by email or telephone. It is your responsibility to check that permission has been received.
10
On a Monday we place a weekend book in the dining hall. By Wednesday evening you need to have filled this in stating your weekend plans, and which meals you are staying in for. You are expected to eat a minimum of two meals a day in House.
The one difference is that in Trinity Term, Mulliner remains open for the first exeat, while all other Houses close. This is to allow you to stay in and study, should you wish. The exeat book is put out during the week prior to an exeat or end of term/half-term. You will need to fill in your plans. If you are doing anything other than going home, permission will need to be received from your parents and the parents you are staying with. Please be aware that Mulliner is often used over exeats, half terms and holidays and therefore you will be asked for permission for your room to be used by other SG pupils.

11
Fire alarms • Try to grab a pair of shoes and a jumper before leaving your room
• Remain as quiet as possible so registers can be taken quickly
• You must leave the House by the nearest door and make your way to the grass outside Old Mulliner
• You should not re-enter the building until told it is safe to do so. Please remain in your group and refrain from wandering off while waiting
• You should gather in floor groups (i.e. with people on the same floor as you) and in room number order

Gap Years Do not leave planning your Gap Year until the last minute, even though it may seem like the best option when you are feeling snowed under by work. Here are some useful websites and books for planning your Gap Year: • www.yearoutgroup.com (umbrella organisation that includes more than 35 organisations that are highly regarded and well regulated) • www.gap-year.com (also publishes a book called ‘The Gap-Year Guidebook’, which is very informative) • www.statravel.co.uk • www.cesalanguages.com • www.inter-rail.co.uk • www.challengeuk.com • www.ef.com • www.wwv.org.uk
• www.i-to-i.com • www.aventure.co.uk • www.gapguru.com • www.gadventures.com • www.gapforce.org • www.raleighinternational.org We have more information in the IT room and the Sixth Form Centre. Mrs Mac (based by the library) is another fantastic source of information. There are many websites and companies – just make sure you check out the validity and safety of each organisation.
• www.theleap.co.uk 13
Going out Always remember to sign in/out and to have your access lanyard with you. 1 During the day (and for wholeSchool events in the evenings or at weekends such as services/ lectures) you may slide your magnet in/out 2 After each school day you need to sign in/out in the books by the office, and state where you are going – even if you are going to somewhere on campus 3 If you need to go off site during the day, you will need to both move your magnet and sign the book. In the books there is also a column headed ‘MoS’, in which you will need to place the initials of the member of staff who has given you permission to go
14
On weekdays you may go into town in the afternoon after lessons (after 5.00pm) if you have no other commitments, but please exercise some selfdiscipline. Meeting your
deadlines and producing work of a high quality should be your priority. If you need to go to town during lesson time, please see Matron for an Exit Chit. On weekdays you should be back on the School site by 6.00pm ready for supper at 6.10pm. On weeknights you must be back in House by 9.30pm, and on Saturdays by 10.30pm. Exceptions may be given if requested beforehand. The first Saturday when you may visit local public houses is at the discretion of the Headmistress in the Lent term, and only in the evening after 7.30pm. No one may visit a pub during the week or on a Sunday at any time. The expectation is that no student should drink anything other than soft drinks, cider, beer or table wine. When drinking alcohol, two units should be the maximum. Pupils will be breathalysed before and after a School event where alcohol is served.
SHERBORNE GIRLS - MULLINER
School rules with regard to smoking/vaping apply at all times. All students are expected to carry their School ID cards, but those visiting public houses will also need their passport or driving licence as proof of age. Good sense and moderation will ensure that all is well. Yeovil, Bath, Salisbury and Exeter: You are allowed to go to the above places on a Saturday or Sunday, but you should ask permission from the member of staff on duty. You may not miss any school commitments or services. While there, bars and public houses are out of bounds. Getting there: • YEOVIL Buses (No.s 57/58) leave every half hour from Green Hill and the bus stop by the Astro. A student return costs about £6.00. Taxis to Yeovil cost around £10
• BATH The quickest route to Bath is via bus. You can also take a taxi to Yeovil Pen Mill station and a direct train from there to Bath Spa. The journey takes about an hour and ten minutes and return tickets are about £12 • SALISBURY Take a train from Sherborne station to Salisbury. This takes about 40 minutes and costs about £10 for a return ticket • EXETER Take a train from Sherborne station to Exeter Central. The journey takes just under one hour, and a return trip is about £15 All train costs quoted are for an off-peak day return with a 1625 Railcard. Prices can change, so please check before you book.

Goodnight
Health Centre
You must say goodnight to the member of staff on duty between 9.00pm and 10.00pm, or by 10.40pm on a Saturday. Once you have said goodnight, you cannot leave the building. You must come to say goodnight in person. If you wish to go to bed early, you still need to come and say goodnight.
Please abide by the times for visiting the Health Centre. These can be found on the noticeboards by the dining room, and by the stairs on the RH side of the House. Remember to get a lilac slip. You may not absent yourself from lessons or school commitments for health reasons. If you feel unwell, please report to the member of staff on duty or go to the Health Centre. You are responsible for arranging/cancelling appointments, arranging vaccinations and collecting medications. A good way to do this is via email: health@sherborne.com.

Health and Safety
House meetings
No personal kettles, toasters, coffee machines, microwaves, fridges, cookers, rice cookers, electric fans, heaters, candles, joss/incense sticks or electronic diffusers are allowed.
These are compulsory and you are expected to be on time. A great deal of information is relayed at these meetings, and you need to know what is going on. You also have the opportunity to have your say, or relay information to the whole House. Meetings are daily (Mon to Fri) at 7.55am in the dining room. Occasional extra meetings are called periodically – for example, induction meeting, JCR meeting, pubs meeting etc.
Please use refrigerators provided in the snugs, or the freezer in the snug kitchen, to store food. Make sure all food is properly wrapped and labelled with your name and expiry date. Do not take other people’s food. Do not overload sockets. These are checked regularly, and items will be removed if deemed dangerous. If you have fairy lights for your room these need to be battery operated. Do not leave baths or showers to overflow, as you will be held accountable for damage. This also applies to any damage to property in your room, including graffiti.
19
Laundry
Meals
On Friday, strip your bed before school starts and place your linen outside your room. This will be collected and sent to the launderers.
Breakfast is always compulsory.
You are expected to do your own washing. The washing machines contain detergent, but you may choose to use your own. You should also have a named laundry basket. We use a queuing system in the laundry rooms, so if the machines are busy, leave your basket in the queue and when the next person enters they can move the queue along. There are three laundry rooms: one on each floor. Machines are not to be used after 10.00pm, because it is inconsiderate to those sleeping. The machines on the first floor are required by the cleaners between 10.00am and 12.00pm. There is an iron and ironing board located in each laundry room. 20
• Mon-Fri lunch is compulsory, but you may opt to cook your own supper in the snug. If you wish to do this, you must tell a member of staff at breakfast • Sat-Sun we must see you eat two meals. You may opt out of either lunch or supper to cook for yourself, order a takeaway, or go out if it is an occasion. If you are attending the JCR, we must see you eat supper on Saturday. You must have signed up for the appropriate meals in the weekend book, and given details of what you will be doing if you are not eating in House. Takeaways may only be ordered on a Saturday and Sunday, and again you should inform us in advance You must be dressed for all meals apart from Breakfast/ Brunch on a Saturday/Sunday, when you may wear pyjamas if you wish. Shoes must always be worn in the dining room.

Medication
Prefects
You are allowed to have your own paracetamol, ibuprofen and cold/flu remedies in your room. We have paracetamol we can give out, but for ibuprofen you will need to go to the Health Centre. All other medications should be handed in.
House Prefects and Heads of House are selected on the Thursday before the first exeat.
If you need to take medication every morning, please come to the office between 8.00am and 8.15am.
24
These roles are selected by a pupil and staff vote. Heads of School and School Prefects are not eligible to be House Prefects. House Prefect duties include helping the House staff with goodnights, organising Mulliner fair, organising Mulliner fun day, creating the yearbook and hoodies if you want them. House Prefects meet with Mrs Cole regularly. They act as the voice of the students, and raise ideas with staff. What you achieve in the role is up to you.
SHERBORNE GIRLS - MULLINER
Prep
Snug Duty
Prep time is 7.00pm to 9.00pm each day. It is up to you to use this time wisely, but you must respect that it is a quiet time. You should be doing something productive, not watching TV.
Two people are on Snug Duty every day. This means you’ll only do duty once or twice per term.
You also have study periods. These are for working in. If you treat the school day like a working day and only break in the break times, you will be amazed at how much you can achieve.
When on duty, you should ensure the snug is clean and tidy at the end of the night. On a weekday or Sunday this should be completed at 10.00pm. It involves closing windows, tidying cushions and throws, wiping down the sides and washing up any cups, plates and cutlery. It shouldn’t take too long, as it is everyone’s responsibility to tidy up after themselves. On a Saturday, the last few people to say goodnight complete the duty. You can choose to leave Snug Duty until Sunday morning but it must be completed by noon. The duty rota can be found on the noticeboard outside Mrs Coles’ office, and will be updated daily. If you are going to be away on the day that you are on duty, you must agree a swap with somebody and alter the rota.
25
UCAS and other applications Do not leave this to the last minute! The earlier you apply, the better. Your Tutor will write your school reference, and will help you write a personal statement. Make sure your Tutor knows all of the fabulous things you do but cannot fit in your personal statement. That way, they can refer to them in their reference. Mrs Scorer should not be sent your personal statement until your Tutor has said it is suitable. Do not expect your first draft to be your last. A few edits will be needed. Try not to show your personal statement to too many people at the same time, as everyone will have a different opinion and it could confuse you.
26
All House staff are happy to help as well, so make sure you use us. This is also true for US applications, HK university applications, apprenticeships or job applications. We really do want to help you get to your next step in life, whatever route you choose to follow. We are also keen to know how your application is getting on, so when you hear back from universities, share the news!
