SHERBORNE GIRLS SCHOLARSHIPS

Sherborne Girls is a school where each pupil is celebrated for their unique merits, strengths and talents. Our dedicated, professional staff ensure that every pupil under our care flourishes in all areas of school.

With exceptional academic, pastoral and co-curricular provision, from the moment a pupil joins us, they are encouraged to explore new subjects, think freely, broaden their horizons, step outside of their comfort zone and immerse themselves in clubs, societies and activities, music and sports to foster proactive global citizenship.

We welcome Scholarship applications from any pupil who possesses a passion for learning, a desire to challenge and be challenged, a keenness to share knowledge as well as develop their own, and who are unafraid of expressing their individuality, standing for their beliefs, while appreciating the importance of humility, listening and reflection.

DR

“For me being a Drama Scholar means being able to focus on a subject that I am passionate about, and to learn about the different aspects of that subject that will help me develop my learning and improve my skills.”
JEMIMA, DRAMA SCHOLAR

A SHERBORNE GIRLS DRAMA SCHOLAR

Every pupil at Sherborne Girls is provided with the opportunities to take part in curriculum Drama, productions, theatre trips and Speech and Drama lessons. Our Drama Scholars are those within each year group who show exceptional ability in creative directorial and acting skills, or a specific interest in one of the key backstage areas of set, lighting, sound or costume design.

As advocates for the subject within the School, our Drama Scholars are expected to assist with every school production, whether that is performing, helping backstage or working front of house. They should take advantage of every opportunity to attend workshops, theatre trips and screenings, and should be prepared to prioritise their Drama as a co-curricular activity, including any additional dance/drama lessons run by external providers.

They should be excellent ambassadors in lessons and be fully involved in the House Drama and Dance competitions, often taking the lead in directing or choreographing the performances.

Our Drama Scholars must study Drama at GCSE and, to retain their Scholarship in the Sixth Form, continue at A Level. Those who complete an Extended Project Qualification are expected to focus on a performance related topic.

OUR COMMITMENT TO YOU AS A DRAMA SCHOLAR:

As a Drama Scholar, we will provide you with a range of experiences to develop your knowledge, skills and cultural understanding of the subject. These may include theatre trips, scriptwriting opportunities, workshops with industry professionals, live screenings of theatre productions, a chance to learn theatre design or attend online seminars with university lecturers. We will encourage you to direct your own work, use the Stuart Centre to perform scratch nights of works in progress and experiment with a wide variety of styles and genres.

Drama Scholars at Sherborne Girls will:

• Be overseen by the Director of Drama.

• Have at least one experience a term of a theatre trip, workshop or screening

• Be given opportunities to explore a wide variety of roles on stage and in support of School Drama productions.

• Receive training in theatre sound and lighting and have the opportunity to ask career based questions of all visiting professionals who assist with the productions.

• Take Drama GCSE / A Level as a curriculum subject.

• Be fully involved in House Drama and Dance competitions.

“Being a Drama Scholar is extremely important to me as it makes me feel very proud to be at Sherborne Girls and to represent a part of the Performing Arts department.”
SUMMER, DRAMA SCHOLAR

BECOMING A DRAMA SCHOLAR AT SHERBORNE GIRLS

As a Drama Scholarship Applicant at 11+ or 13+, you will be invited to Sherborne Girls to take part in a Drama Scholarship Day. This will include a group workshop which will assess your ability and willingness to work collaboratively, generate directorial ideas, build on the ideas of others, take direction, and take creative risks. This is the most important part of the Drama Scholarship assessment process as it demonstrates your natural talent and creativity.

During the Scholarship Day you will have the opportunity to perform a short monologue and discuss your recent experiences of performing and watching theatre. If you have technical or theatre design experience that you would like to share, you are invited bring a portfolio of images to show the set, props, costumes or lighting states you have designed. If you have created a sound design, this may be submitted in advance for discussion on the day.

We would be delighted to hear from you if you feel you demonstrate the creativity and confidence that we are looking for.

All Awards are subject to review by the School and whilst the expectation is that the recipient retains this throughout her time at Sherborne Girls, her performance and conduct will be reassessed at key points. If this should fall below the necessary standard and commitment required of Scholars, the School reserves the right to withdraw the pupil’s Scholarship status and associated benefits.

“I am excited by the opportunities I get as a Drama Scholar. It is something I am motivated to work for, and I am inspired by doing something I love and have a talent for.”
POPPY, DRAMA SCHOLAR

FURTHER OPPORTUNITIES FOR ENRICHMENT IN THE PERFORMING ARTS

BURSARIES

In line with our commitment to broadening access to a Sherborne Girls education for all, our Drama Scholarships and Awards carry kudos and prestige but no financial value. Should financial support be necessary, Drama Scholarship applicants are encouraged to apply for a means-tested bursary which currently supports 71 pupils, 7 of whom are on 110% transformational bursaries.

UNIVERSITY DESTINATIONS

Sherborne Girls sends pupils to some of the world’s most prestigious universities in the UK including Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College London, Edinburgh, Newcastle and Durham to study a wide range of challenging and inspiring courses. Those with an interest in Drama and Theatre have successfully pursued degrees in the Performing Arts, Film and Theatre, as well Business, Law, Medicine, English, Classics and History of Art.

“Drama Scholars should have an enquiring mind, be willing to take risks and be prepared to be involved in all elements of productions, not just performing. Confidence is key, and we look for girls who are able to think creatively, work well with others and take direction maturely.

Drama at GCSE is a requirement for all Drama Scholars, as is a passion for live theatre and an ability to perform for others with conviction.”
