SHERBORNE GIRLS SCHOLARSHIPS

Sherborne Girls is a school where each pupil is celebrated for their unique merits, strengths and talents. Our dedicated, professional staff ensure that every pupil under our care flourishes in all areas of school.

With exceptional academic, pastoral and co-curricular provision, from the moment a pupil joins us, they are encouraged to explore new subjects, think freely, broaden their horizons, step outside of their comfort zone and immerse themselves in clubs, societies and activities, music and sports to foster proactive global citizenship.

We welcome Scholarship applications from any pupil who possesses a passion for learning, a desire to challenge and be challenged, a keenness to share knowledge as well as develop their own, and who are unafraid of expressing their individuality, standing for their beliefs, while appreciating the importance of humility, listening and reflection.

DR

“I have been encouraged to do more than one Art subject at GCSE and am motivated to work hard to improve my skills. I really enjoy the Scholars Club and being able to spend more time in the Art block.”
SELENA, ART SCHOLAR

A SHERBORNE GIRLS ART & DESIGN SCHOLAR

Every pupil at Sherborne Girls is provided with an engaging and enriching creative programme, encountering Art, 3D Design and Textile Design as part of the core curriculum. They are also given the opportunity to explore artistic expression in greater depth in crosscurricular activities. Our Art & Design Scholars are those within each year group who show exceptional artistic ability, creativity and talent in a particular discipline; who have a natural love of design, a genuine desire to develop their creative breadth and a commitment to the pursuit of this.

As Art & Design leaders within the School, our Scholars are expected to engage with opportunities to create and celebrate works of Art & Design. As Scholars they share their passions and interests with the wider community, inspiring others to develop their own creative interests. They lead in developing creative opportunities for others as well as themselves and spend time reflecting upon their artistic journey and aspirations.

Our Art & Design Scholars must study at least one Art & Design option at GCSE (from Fine Art, 3D Design and Textile Design) and, to retain their Scholarship at Sixth Form, continue at A Level. Those who complete an Extended Project Qualification are encouraged to focus on an Art & Design related topic.

“Being an Art Scholar means I can develop my skills and learning in the areas that most interest me. I have particularly enjoyed the lectures and enrichment opportunities which have been very interesting.”
AMELIA, ART & ACADEMIC SCHOLAR

OUR COMMITMENT TO YOU AS AN ART & DESIGN SCHOLAR:

As an Art & Design Scholar, we will provide you with a range of exciting creative and thoughtprovoking experiences that will develop your knowledge, skills and cultural understanding of the subject. You will be encouraged to question your views and opinions of classic and contemporary art during visits to leading galleries such as Hauser and Wirth Somerset, Messums Wiltshire and The Sherborne. You will deepen your knowledge base and understanding of various artistic mediums and develop practical skills in a wide range of specialist areas.

Art and Design Scholars at Sherborne Girls will:

• Be overseen by the Head of Art, Design and Technology.

• Play an integral part in the varied clubs and societies that take place each week in the department

• Be given the opportunity to attend thrice termly Academic Scholars’ enrichment sessions which will stimulate and encourage enquiry, collaboration, questioning skills and provide the opportunity to be inspired. Sessions are led by visiting speakers, staff and pupils.

• Be expected to enter internal and external Art & Design related competitions, which will be highlighted in the department.

• Participate in exhibitions in the Wirth Gallery curated by the department Artist/Curator. This will include educational tours, practical responses and discussion.

• Join other Art and Design Scholars on arranged external gallery visits, tours and lectures.

BECOMING AN ART & DESIGN SCHOLAR AT SHERBORNE GIRLS

As an Art & Design Scholarship applicant you will be invited to Sherborne Girls to take part in an Art & Design Scholarship Day. This will include an interview with the Head of Art, Design and Technology and a workshop where you will produce a creative response to a still life stimulus with materials provided by the department. You will be invited to submit a digital portfolio in advance of this day, showcasing your recent work. This should usually consist of 12 images of work with annotation in ‘slides’ format e.g. PowerPoint.

Ahead of the Art & Design Scholarship Day, you will also be assigned a mini project. You will bring the pieces you have produced in response to the project brief, along with any sketch books or draft pieces showing their development, to discuss with the Head of Art, Design and Technology.

We would be delighted to hear from you if you feel you demonstrate the qualities that we are looking for: excellent artistic ability, a passion

for creative expression, an inquisitive mind, a willingness to explore a wide range of media and practical skills.

All Awards are subject to review by the School and whilst the expectation is that the recipient retains this throughout her time at Sherborne Girls, her performance and conduct will be reassessed at key points. If this should fall below the necessary standard and commitment required of Scholars, the School reserves the right to withdraw the pupil’s Scholarship status and associated benefits.

“Being an Art Scholar is an incredible experience. It has helped show me my potential and inspired me to be the best I can. I have enjoyed working alongside other Scholars.”
ELIZABETH, MUSIC SCHOLAR

UNIVERSITY DESTINATIONS

Sherborne Girls sends pupils to some of the world’s most prestigious universities and competitive art schools to study a range of challenging and inspiring courses. Central St Martins is a popular successful destination for Art and Design courses, as well as Bath, London, Paris, and the Fashion institute of Technology in New York.

“Art Scholars at Sherborne Girls are open minded, positive and take risks.
