it is my great pleasure to welcome you to the Girls Go Gold conference at Sherborne Girls. We are honoured to be hosting over 400 pupils and Pe staff from 27 schools across the country, where girls will come together for a day celebrating and advancing women’s sport.
Continuing the legacy of our ‘Sport in Her Shoes’ conference, first launched in 2019 in collaboration with The Well HQ, we are proud to further explore the world of women ’ s sport and inspire the next generation by recognising that anything is possible In 2019 we invited over 200 aspiring young athletes and professionals eager to discuss female performance, participation, and the joy of sport to Sherborne Girls and broke new ground by addressing vital topics such as puberty, breast health, and the importance of proper
sports clothing designed for women and girls.
This year ’ s GSA Girls Go Gold event, themed ‘Raising the Bar,’ comes at an exciting time, following the historic achievement of gender parity at the Paris Olympics. This milestone emphasises the momentum women ’ s sport is gaining globally, and we are thrilled to be part of this movement
Today, we are privileged to hear from pioneers who have shaped the landscape of women ’ s sport. Their stories of perseverance and success will inspire and empower all of us to pursue excellence Let this day be one of discovery and inspiration, as we continue to push the boundaries and raise the bar in women ’ s sport.
Dr Ruth Sullivan Head
“the greatest danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it.”
michelangelo
Sherborne Girls is delighted to be hosting Girls Go Gold 2024; the National Girls’ Schools Association Conference, aimed at inspiring the next generation of women in sport The event will showcase existing and future opportunities to work within the industry as well as continue to increase the visibility of women ’ s sport, through engagement with an array of positive female role models.
The evolution of women ’ s sport reminds us just how far we have come This includes more women competing for Team GB than men at this summer ’ s Olympics; this is only the second time this has happened in the history of the Games. Of these women, an incredible nine are mothers who have made their return to the pinnacle of sport.
Team GB also made history with the first ever black female swimmer selected to represent the country
We are seeking to continue to drive the momentum that has been building in women ’ s sport, to facilitate a day of discovery, promoting the theme of ‘Raising the Bar’. Our aspiration is for every girl to recognise her limitless potential and realise that no aim is too high Hearing about the changing landscape of women ’ s sport from trailblazers in the field, will facilitate an environment that focuses on possibility and opportunity

The Girls Go Gold event at Sherborne Girls continues to champion the importance of women in sport under the theme ‘Raising the Bar’ This initiative builds upon our successful campaign, ‘Sport in her Shoes’ in 2019 which emphasised the importance of teaching sport through a female lens.
Our aim is to promote the significance of empowering women to excel in sports, challenging stereotypes, and breaking barriers. By encouraging leadership, skill development, and increasing confidence, we aim to foster a supportive environment where young women can thrive both on and off the field
Through workshops, inspirational talks, and interactive sessions led by accomplished athletes and experts, today, participants will gain valuable insights and tools to enhance their sporting journeys.
Raising the Bar showcases our dedication to enabling every girl to aim higher and change the narrative around women ’ s sport

Our approach to sport has undergone a significant transformation since our 2019 Conference, driven by the need to facilitate a bespoke and tailored experience for our girls. By placing their needs and preferences at the heart of our programme, we ’ ve created a more inclusive and empowering sporting environment where every girl takes away a love of movement in whatever form they choose.
A key step was revolutionising the sports kit. We moved away from traditional, restrictive cricket and tennis whites in favour of practical and comfortable navy skorts or shorts. Additionally, we introduced period swimwear and ‘caughtshort’ packs for teachers and coaches, addressing physical needs and breaking
down barriers to participation. The PE programme has evolved to include a ‘Female Focus’ unit of work where the girls receive education from department experts on pelvic floor health, strength training for women, fuel for performance, the impact of the menstrual cycle on training, female injuries, body literacy, sleep and more.
Beyond the education, we ’ ve focused on creating a supportive atmosphere where we try to find a sport or activity for everyone. This includes offering a variety of sports to cater to diverse interests, ensuring equal access to facilities and coaching, and promoting body positivity through changing the narrative and encouraging girls to be advocates for themselves.
