Hello and welcome to the Sherman Cymru autumn brochure!
Helo a chroeso i lyfryn tymor yr hydref Sherman Cymru!
It’s surprising to think that six months have already passed since we reopened as so much has happened in that time. We have been packing Theatre 1 and 2 with exciting new productions and have been delighted to welcome audiences old and new back into our new building.
Mae’n syndod meddwl bod chwe mis eisoes wedi mynd heibio ers i ni ailagor gan fod cymaint wedi digwydd yn y cyfamser. Rydym wedi bod yn llenwi Theatr 1 a 2 gyda chynyrchiadau cyffrous newydd ac wedi bod yn falch iawn o groesawu gynulleidfaoedd hen a newydd yn ôl i mewn i’n adeilad.
The autumn season continues in the same way with a wide range of shows to cater for all tastes. Here are just a few of the highlights, look inside for even more... We’re engaging in exciting and fresh collaborations to produce new work, including a new co-production with Bristol Old Vic with Before It Rains. The welcome return of Frantic Assembly (Lovesong), who this time treat us to their acclaimed Beautiful Burnout, continues our commitment to bring you some of the best work touring the UK. Llwyth returns fresh from its tour to the Taipei Arts Festival for its final performances in September. October heralds the arrival of the Afrovibes Festival, an entire week of innovative international performances throughout the building. And, of course, we’re all excited to see the return of our ever-popular Christmas shows, this year Peter Pan and The Snow Tiger. We look forward to welcoming you into the building to see some great theatre, or to take part in one of our Creative Learning projects, or for a cup of coffee and a piece of cake.
Mae tymor yr hydref yn parhau yn yr un ffordd gydag amrywiaeth o sioeau ar gyfer pob dant. Dyma rhai o’r sioeau gwych sydd i ddod. Cymerwch gip ty fewn am fwy eto… Rydym yn ymroi i gydweithrediadau cyffrous a ffresh er mwyn cynhyrchu gwaith newydd, gan gynnwys cydgynhyrchiad newydd â Bristol Old Vic gyda Before It Rains. Rydym yn croesawu Frantic Assembly (Lovesong) yn ôl gyda Beautiful Burnout sy’n parhau ein hymrwymiad i gyflwyno y gwaith teithiol gorau y DU. Mae Llwyth yn dychwelyd yn syth o’r daith i’r Gŵyl Gelfyddydau Taipei, ac ym mis Hydref, bydd yr Ŵyl Afrovibes yn cyflwyno wythnos gyfan o berfformiadau arloesol drwy’r adeilad, ac wrth gwrs, yr ydym i gyd yn edrych ymlaen am weld ein sioeau poblogaidd Nadolig nôl yn yr adeilad, Peter Pan a Teigr Yr Eira. Edrychwn ymlaen i’ch croesawu i’r adeilad i brofi theatr o’r radd flaenaf, neu i gymeru’r rhan yn un o’n prosiectau Dysgu Creadigol, neu am baned o goffi a thamaid o gacen.

Dafydd James Awdur / Writer ‘It’s where it all began’: geiriau Aneurin ar ddiwedd Llwyth. Geiriau sy’n berthnasol iawn wrth feddwl bydd perfformiad ola’r ddrama yn digwydd yn Sherman Cymru ym mis Medi. Freuddwydiais i fyth pyrnu y byse’r cynhyrchiad yn mynd ar daith deirgwaith ledled Cymru ac yn ymddangos mewn gŵyliau yng Nghaeredin a Taiwan. Mae wedi bod yn antur a hanner; mae’n braf cael dod adref. ‘It’s where it all began’, Aneurin remarks at the end of Llwyth. Such words seem extremely fitting considering that the play’s final performance will be at Sherman Cymru this September. I never imagined then that the production would tour three times across Wales and appear at festivals in Edinburgh and Taiwan. It’s been one hell of an adventure; it’s good to come home.

“ When the shit hits the fan, ti ddim yn rhedeg, ti ddim yn dewis rhywbeth neu rywun arall. Mae cariad yn golygu ti ’di neud dy ddewis yn barod.” Rugby international night in Cardiff and the tribes are out in force. But this is Queer Cymru and for four gay men it’s a night they’ll never forget. A bold, provocative look at what it means to be Welsh, to belong, to be a man and to love.

Her gentle son, Michael, gamely ploughs the allotment, tends to the soil, and tries to make order of things. From the other side of the tracks, Carl – wild, unpredictable and footloose – watches both with interest, bouncing his ball.
Mae Gloria yn fam sengl ac yn suddo i gadair gynfas i foddi ei gofidion drwy yfed fodca. Mae Michael, ei mab addfwyn, yn parhau i aredig y rhandir, i drin y pridd, i geisio rhoi trefn ar bethau. Ar ochr arall y cledrau mae Carl – gŵr ifanc gwyllt ac anwaraidd – yn chwarae pel ac yn gwylio’r ddau â diddordeb.

And then a cat gets nailed to a neighbour’s door. Funny, brave and beautifully told, Katherine Chandler’s tale of parenthood, protection and provocation looks at how we all develop our own ways of coping with the world, our craving for companionship and the consequences of having either threatened. Before It Rains is co-produced with Bristol Old Vic and is part of our commitment to developing Welsh and Wales-based writers.

Since its premiere in 2010, FAR has toured the world, picking up accolades for McGregor’s everinsightful vision, performed by ten dancers from Wayne McGregor | Random Dance. A superb score by Brian Eno collaborator Ben Frost and jaw-dropping visuals including a computerised pin board of 3,200 LED lights, make this an absolute must-see.
Ers y premiere yn 2010, mae FAR wedi teithio’r byd gan dderbyn anrhydedd a chlod ymhobman. Perfformir gweledigaeth graff McGregor gan ddeg dawnsiwr sy’n perthyn i Wayne McGregor | Random Dance. FAR takes a fascinating creative journey, drawing on the power of the mind. Inspired by the controversial Age of Enlightenment and by the 18th century French philosopher Diderot’s very first set of encyclopaedia, the resulting choreography is both physical and immediate, yet intensely cerebral.

O ganlyniad, mae’r coreograffi yn gorfforol ac yn uniongyrchol, ond ar yr un pryd yn hynod ymenyddol.

My Exile is in my Head is a solo piece inspired by Wole Soyinka’s prison notes. Sophisticated, slick and wonderfully enjoyable, this piece combines dance, acrobatics, digital media and live music.
Inception is an intensely physical and psychological journey into the psyche of a female artist. Originally performed in 2011 this complex, textured dance solo, has already evolved into a classic.
Darn o theatre gorfforol yw My Exile is in my Head a ysbrydolwyd gan nodiadau a ysgrifennodd Wole Soyinka tra yn y carchar. Mae’r darn rhyfeddol yma’n soffistigedig, yn slic ac yn ddiddorol dros ben.

Cameron Burns is going places. He’s fighting for his club, his mum, his place in the world. And this boy is a natural. He has an affinity with the violence, the balance, the ritual, the grace, and the power of the most controversial sport of our time.
Mae Cameron Burns yn mynd i lwyddo. Mae’n cwffio dros ei glwb, ei fam, a’i le yn y byd. Ac mae’r bachgen yma’n naturiol ddawnus. Mae’n deall y trais, y chydbwysedd, y ddefod, y gosgeiddrwydd a’r pŵer sy’n gysylltiedig ag un o chwaraeon mwyaf dadleuol ein hoes.
Bryony Lavery’s heart-wrenching and deeply human story follows five young fighters as they aim for the bright lights, far from Glasgow’s mean, grey streets. This knockout production is spectacularly staged, drawing its audience into the heart of the action where every jab, hook and uppercut feels flinchingly realistic. Featuring a stunning backdrop of glittering video screens and a pulsating soundtrack by electronic heavyweights Underworld, Beautiful Burnout packs an almighty and unforgettable punch. See you ringside.
Mae stori hynod ddynol Bryony Lavery, fydd yn siŵr o gyffwrdd eich calonnau, yn dilyn pum ymladdwr ifanc wrth iddynt anelu am y goleuadau llachar, ym mhell o strydoedd llwyd a garw Glasgow. Mae’r cynhyrchiad gwefreiddiol yma wedi ei lwyfannu’n rhagorol, gan ddenu’r gynulleidfa at galon y ddrama ble fydd pob pwniad, bachiad a chlatsien yn siŵr o wneud i chi wingo. Gyda chefnlen drawiadol llawn sgriniau fideo disglair a thrac sain curiadol gan rai o hoelion wyth y byd electronig, Underworld, mae Beautiful Burnout yn gynhyrchiad bythgofiadwy. 1830s Russia. Poprishchin is in his 40s – a low ranking civil servant for the Government, struggling to make his mark on life. But one day he makes an amazing discovery. Could he really be the next King of Spain?
Rwsia’r 1830au. Mae Poprishchin yn ei 40au – gwas sifil di-nod yn brwydro i adael ei ôl ar y byd, ond un diwrnod mae’n darganfod rhywbeth anhygoel. Ai ef, tybed, yw Brenin nesaf Sbaen?
Driven insane by Government bureaucracy and hierarchy, Gogol’s dark comedy exposes one man’s reality spiralling deeper into a surreal fantasy world. Considered by many to be Gogol’s best work, Diary of a Madman is a timeless piece that explores the human condition when it comes face to face with its own mortality.

Mae comedi dywyll Gogol am ddyn a yrrir yn wallgof gan fiwrocratiaeth a hierarchaeth y Llywodraeth, yn datgelu realaeth un dyn sy’n troelli’n ddyfnach fyth i fyd ffantasi swreal. Mae nifer yn ystyried mai Diary of a Madman yw gwaith gorau Gogol. Darn oesol sy’n edrych ar y cyflwr dynol pan ddaw wyneb yn wyneb â’i farwolaeth ei hun.

L.O.V.E. is an immoderate Shakespearean ménage à trois, with a touch of Shirley Bassey. It is about passion, spirit, beauty, jealousy, manipulation, lust.
Ménage à trois Shakespeareaidd eithafol yw L.O.V.E., gyda mymryn o Shirley Bassey yn y pair. Mae’n llawn angerdd, ysbryd, harddwch, cenfigen, ystryw a chwant.

“ If there’s a God, which at the moment I DOUBT, I want you to curse him. If there’s any justice, I want them – both of them – in a car crash.” The classic Greek tragedy retold for the Mumsnet generation. Her husband’s gone and her future isn’t bright. Imprisoned in her marital home, Medea can’t work, can’t sleep, and increasingly, can’t cope. While her child plays, she plots her revenge.
Mae ei gŵr wedi gadael. Mae’r dyfodol yn ddu. Wedi ei chaethiwo yn ei chartref priodasol ni all Medea weithio na chysgu. Ni all ymdopi. Tra mae ei phlentyn yn chwarae mae hi’n cynllunio ei dialedd.
This startlingly modern version of Euripides’ classic tragedy explores the private fury bubbling under public behaviour and how in today’s world a mother, fuelled by anger at her husband’s infidelity, might be driven to commit the worst possible crime.
Mae’r fersiwn drawiadol yma o drasiedi glasurol Euripides yn archwilio’r cynddaredd sy’n byrlymu dan yr wyneb cyhoeddus, a sut, yn y byd cyfoes, gall mam, sy’n cael ei gyrru gan ddicter yn sgil anffyddlondeb ei gŵr, droseddu yn y modd mwyaf dychrynllyd posib.
The production will be adapted and directed by one of the UK’s most exciting and in demand young writers, Mike Bartlett, who has received critical acclaim for his plays, including Earthquakes in London (Headlong/National Theatre); Cock (Royal Court/OffBroadway – Olivier Award); a new stage version of Chariots of Fire; and Love Love Love.

‘ We’re the little people; there are things we’re not supposed to know.’ A political thriller, Blue Sky investigates what might be happening in the English countryside in the dead of the night. Isolated airports, secret landings… how much do we really know about what our governments are involved in? And do we want to know – or is it easier to turn a blind eye? A fast-paced story about justice and journalism, this is an exhilarating evening at the theatre.
Drama wleidyddol gyffrous yw Blue Sky sy’n gofyn i ni ystyried yr hyn allai fod yn digwydd yng nghefn gwlad Lloegr gefn trymaidd nos. Meysydd awyr unig, awyrennau’n glanio ganol nos, aseiniadau cyfrinachol... faint yn union ydym ni’n ei wybod am beth mae ein llywodraethau’n eu gwneud? Ydym ni eisiau gwybod? Neu a yw’n haws anwybyddu’r cyfan?

Rob Evans Writer / Awdur The most exciting aspect of adapting Peter Pan is the sheer amount of things there are to play with; Pirates, Lost Boys, being able to fly and the ever present danger of Hook are all loved by audiences around the world. I hope my version takes all this and adds a twist in the shape of Wendy, a girl who refuses to fit the traditional story. Yr hyn sydd wedi ‘nghyffroi fwyaf am addasu Peter Pan yw’r holl elfennau sydd wrth law i’w trin a’u trafod; Môr-ladron, Bechgyn Coll, y gallu i hedfan, a pherygl yr holl-bresennol Capten Hook- elfennau mae cynulleidfaoedd ledled y byd wedi eu gwirioni arnynt. ‘Rwy’n gobeithio fod fy fersiwn i’n cynnwys hyn oll, a hefyd yn cynnig rhywbeth newydd i Wendy, merch sy’n gwrthod cyd-fynd â’r stori draddodiadol.

“ I want always to stay like this. Be a boy and have fun. I haven’t got room for anything else, Wendy. Do you understand? Sometimes with all the things inside I think I’ll burst. And one more would probably do it. It just won’t fit.” It’s Christmas Eve and Wendy is desperate to make it the best Christmas yet. However, with no decorations, her brothers both arguing and the bailiff at the door, she misses her mum more than ever. So when Peter and Tink fly through her window, offering adventure, excitement and a chance to fly on the wind, well… why wouldn’t you leave? Wendy begins her magical adventure to Neverland with Peter, the Lost Boys and finally meets Captain Hook. But it is Wendy’s own darker side that finally turns her journey into the greatest struggle of her life.
Something spectacular that can be enjoyed by a wide age range and is a real alternative to pantomime...
This reimagining of J.M.Barrie’s classic story features all the favourite characters, including the baddie we all love to hate Captain Hook (played by Russell Gomer).

Mae’n Noswyl y Nadolig ac mae Wendy’n torri ei bol eisiau sicrhau mai dyma’r Nadolig gorau eto. Ond heb addurniadau, ei brodyr yn dadlau, a’r beili wrth y drws, mae Wendy’n colli ei mam yn fwy nag erioed. Felly pan mae Peter a Tink yn hedfan drwy’r ffenest yn cynnig antur, cyffro a chyfle i hedfan ar y gwynt, wel... mynd sydd raid! Mae Wendy yn cychwyn ar ei hantur gyda Peter, y Bechgyn Coll, ac o’r diwedd yn cwrdd â Capten Hook. Ond ochr dywyll Wendy ei hun sy’n gyfrifol am droi’r daith yn frwydr bersonol fawr. Dyma glasur J.M.Barrie yn cael ei ddweud o’r newydd, ond mae pawb yma – yn enwedig y dihiryn ‘rydym oll yn caru ei gasáu, Capten Hook (a chwaraeir gan Russell Gomer).

d-d-d--do y:ou re-really (h)ear m:e?
People aren’t always who they seem to be. So how can you tell when things ‘click’? Because it’s not just a case of pressing return.
Following 8 months of research, Theatr Ffynnon, Sherman Cymru Youth Theatre and pupils from Crownbridge Special Needs School look to unravel what happens between the listener and speaker, when the “expectation of communication is violated”. Enter a world of blackboards, chalk, talking, dancing, stories and loud music! Yn dilyn 8 mis o ymchwil bydd Theatr Ffynnon, Theatr Ieuenctid Sherman Cymru, a disgyblion o Ysgol Anghenion Arbennig Crownbridge yn ceisio datrys beth sy’n digwydd rhwng y gwrandäwr a’r siaradwr pan “mae disgwyliadau cyfathrebu’n cael eu torri”. Dewch i fyd llawn byrddau du, sialc, sgwrsio, dawnsio a cherddoriaeth uchel!
12 young people’s lives become increasingly interlinked through a series of chance encounters as they struggle to understand themselves and begin to forge surprising friendships that will change the way they view the world forever. Nid yw pobl bob amser pwy fyddech chi’n disgwyl. Felly sut rydych chi’n gwybod pan fod pethau’n ‘clicio’? Oherwydd nid dim ond mater o wasgu’r ‘botwm dychwelwr’ ydyw e’. Mae bywydau 12 person ifanc yn dod yn fwy cysylltiedig drwy gyfres o gyfarfodydd siawns wrth iddyn nhw frwydro i ddeall eu hunain a dechrau gwneud ffrindiau annisgwyl a fydd yn newid y ffordd maen nhw’n gweld y byd am byth.

Advanced Writers Course Rhaglen Awduron Uwch Behind the scenes at Sherman Cymru there’s a team of people helping writers to find their voice, develop their work and produce the very best new plays from Wales. Projects like ScriptSlam (see page 13) and our Young Writers Project give people an opportunity to write for the stage for the first time whereas our writers’ courses help playwrights develop key skills and complete a short play. Y tu ôl i’r llenni yn Sherman Cymru mae tîm o bobl yn helpu awduron i ddod o hyd i’w llais, datblygu eu gwaith a cynhyrchu dramâu newydd orau o Gymru. Mae prosiectau fel ScriptSlam (gweler tudalen 13) ag ein Prosiect Awduron Ifanc yn rhoi cyfle i bobl ysgrifennu ar gyfer y llwyfan am y tro cyntaf a mae cyrsiau awduron yn helpu i ddramodwyr ddatblygu sgiliau allweddol a chwblhau drama fer.
For a six month period, ten promising writers are handpicked by us to be part of an attachment to Sherman Cymru involving group theatre visits, intensive monthly sessions and special events, all for free. Our ten playwrights for 2012 are below. Am gyfnod o chwe mis, mae ddeg awduron addawol yn cael eu dewis ganddo ni i fod yn rhan o atodiad i Sherman Cymru sy’n cynnwys ymweliadau theatr i grŵp, sesiynau dwys misol a digwyddiadau arbennig, i gyd am ddim. Y 10 dramodydd ar gyfer 2012 yw:
Neil Bebber Ralph Bolland Georgia Coles-Riley Matthew Glyn David Harris Paul Jenkins Siân Owen Siân Price Lotty Talbutt Tom Wentworth
Paul Mckay ScriptSlam writer / Awdur ScriptSlam For me, ScriptSlam has provided a fantastic opportunity to try out new work in front of a live audience and get an immediate response to it. The cast performances breathe life into what was once just words on an page. I can see what dialogue works and what doesn’t and from that, refine my work further. I mi, mae ScriptSlam wedi bod yn gyfle gwych i roi cynnig ar waith newydd o flaen cynulleidfa fyw a chael ymateb ar unwaith iddo. Mae’r perfformiadau cast wedi rhoi bywyd i mewn i’r hyn oedd ar un adeg dim ond geiriau ar dudalen. Gallaf weld y ddeialog sy’n gweithio a’r hyn nad yw’n ac o hynny, mireinio y gwaith pellach.

Spread the Word Gair ar Led
What’s going on... Beth Sy’n Digwydd
Since September 2011, we have been working with 50 writers from all over Wales in both English and Welsh as part of our Spread the Word initiative, bringing playwriting opportunities to your doorstep. With the help of our fantastic partner theatre companies and buildings in each location, writers have already completed courses at Caernarfon, Aberystwyth, Milford Haven and Neath. Coming up are courses in Clwyd, Aberystwyth and Blackwood. See our website for more details.
Throughout the year, our Literary and Artistic teams are focussed on discovering and nurturing writers of all levels of experience. We read and provide feedback on any script sent to us. We also provide events, short courses and talks.
Ers mis Medi 2011, rydym wedi bod yn gweithio gyda 50 o awduron o bob rhan o Gymru yn y Gymraeg a’r Saesneg fel rhan o’n menter Gair ar Led, gan ddod â dramâu at eich drws. Gyda chymorth cwmnïau theatr gwych ac adeiladau ym mhob lleoliad, mae awduron eisoes wedi cwblhau cyrsiau yng Nghaernarfon, Aberystwyth, Aberdaugleddau a Chastell-nedd. Ar ddod mae gyrsiau yng Nghlwyd Aberystwyth a’r Coedduon. Gweler ein wefan am fwy o fanylion.
Ruth Lloyd Spread the Word / Gair ar Led The process is great, the atmosphere is positive, we are a bunch of people from a variety of ages, backgrounds and aspirations but the intention is to put pen to paper and write. Mae’r broses yn wych, yr awyrgylch yn bositif, rydym yn griw o bobl o gefndiroedd gwahanol iawn, yn gymysg o oedran a gwahanol dyheadau ond yr un yw’r bwriad sef bwrw pen at bapur a sgrifennu.
Recently we asked you to submit your Plays on a Page and you did, in droves! And so we festooned the building with them during March. In July, we asked writers, directors and actors to be part of our mammoth Sherman Swingers weekend which culminated in twenty micro plays being performed throughout our sparkling new Sherman Cymru building. See Sherman Cymru’s website for future events coming up soon. Drwy gydol y flwyddyn, mae ein Timau Llenyddol ac Artistig yn meithrin awduron o bob lefel o brofiad. Darllenwn a chynnig adborth ar bob sgript a dderbyniwn. Hefyd, cynigiwn ddigwyddiadau arbennig, cyrsiau byr a sgyrsiau. Yn ddiweddar, ofynnon ni i chi gyflwyno Drama Dudalen, ac mi wnaethoch, yn llu! Ac fe addurnom ni’r adeilad efo nhw ym mis Mawrth. Ym mis Gorffennaf ofynnon ni i awduron, cyfarwyddwyr ac actorion grymryd rhen yn ein penwythnos Sherman Swingers – Perfformiwyd 20 drama meicro drwy adeilad newydd sgleiniog Sherman Cymru.
