The Senghennydd Road landscape is changing, as our contractors, Dawnus Construction have started work on Sherman Cymru’s long awaited theatre redevelopment.

It’s a very exciting time as building work has begun – the hoardings are up and the sound of hammering and drilling can be heard!

The fundraising campaign has also moved on with substantial support from two of the UK’s foremost arts foundations – The Foyle Foundation and The Monument Trust. This funding, and the very generous support from our audiences and supporters through our individual giving campaigns, have raised £535,000 in total so far.

We still have a long way to go to reach our £1.36 million target and the campaign will continue for another year, until we open the new look theatre. We still need your help to help us achieve the target amount.

Amy is an Associate Director at Sherman Cymru and was the recipient of the Jerwood Directors Award 2007.

takis studied stage design at the National University of Arts in Bucharest, theatre technical arts at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and is currently finishing his PhD at the London College of Fashion. He is designer in residence for HighTide and is also the artistic director of his own company, ARTLUXE, which produces installation and performance art.

Lootie trained in Lecoq at London International School of Performing Arts (LISPA). She was a founder member of physical devising company Counterweight.

D.J. Britton is an award-winning dramatist, director and dramaturg. He was formerly National Executive Producer heading the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s radio drama department, and is now the drama specialist on the Creative Writing Programme at Swansea University.

The Provincial

Joe trained at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and is currently developing a number of projects, including a quartet, a chord-less trio and a double-tenor sax quintet.

Mark studied at Oxford University prior to training in stage lighting design at the RADA. Mark has also been a guest lecturer and tutor for RADA, National Youth Theatre and East 15.

James trained at Circus Space, London and Ecole de Cirque, Lomme.

He has performed across Europe and in China and studied with a number of great musicians including Iain Ballamy, Rick Margitza, Ben Van Gelder, Geoff Simkins, Russell Van Den Berg, Martin Speake, Ivo Neame and Lee Goodall. Joe has appeared at the Brecon Jazz Festival and performed with many other musicians including Paula Gardiner, Alex Douglas’s Jazz Orchestra, Keith Tippett’s Jazz Ensemble and the Steve Waterman Big Band.

Edward studied music at Oxford University and subsequently trained as a composer and sound designer at the Bournemouth Media School. He has worked on numerous theatre productions, as well as for film, television and radio. He also works as a conductor and music critic.

Stepping into the Provincial offers a glimpse into Cardiff’s rich history. Built in 1927 by in-house architects F.C.R Palmer and W.F.C Holden, the National Provincial Bank was labelled as one of the finest buildings of its kind outside of London. When it was constructed it stood as the highest structure of any size in the Cardiff Docks area. Today The Provincial lacks none of the unique charm it held when it was first built. With a continuing programme of repair and restoration, the banking hall of this Grade II* listed building is once again close to capturing its former glory. Formerly known as The Old Natwest Bank, The Provincial took its name in 2010 to represent both its past and present.

The Provincial is delighted to welcome Sherman Cymru and treat its audiences to one of the most historically significant venue spaces in the city.

Joe has previously worked with theatre groups on musicals such as Les Miserables, Sweet Charity and The Little Shop of Horrors and has also composed music to accompany a staging of Alan Bennett’s Talking Heads monologues.

His version of Sophocles’s Oedipus/Antigone was performed by Sherman Cymru Youth Theatre in February and has just been published by Methuen Drama as part of its Producers’ Choice - Six Plays for Young People collection. He worked as dramaturg on the National Theatre Wales/Volcano production, Shelf Life.
