Welcome to our autumn season brochure, and a very special edition it is as the Sherman is turning 40 this year. To celebrate this milestone we will be holding lots of events and activities throughout the year (see page 2 for further details) and keep an eye out for the 40 logo throughout the brochure for more 40th anniversary productions. We are particularly looking forward to Simon Crowther’s (The Get Together) witty adaptation of Alexander Ostrovsky’s classic satire It’s A Family Affair. The story centres on a proud patriarch and the family he’d be wise not to trust. Later in the season is our annual festive treat, this year we bring you The Sleeping Beauties, Rob Evans’ (Peter Pan) twist on the much loved fairytale, and for the little ones we have Corina Pavlova and the Lion’s Roar / Corina Pavlova a’r Llew sy’n Rhuo, a show full of singing, fun and a little bit of magic. We look forward to welcoming you very soon.

Croeso i lyfryn tymor yr hydref, sy’n rhifyn arbennig iawn, gan fod y Sherman yn dathlu ei benblwydd yn ddeugain eleni. I ddathlu’r garreg filltir hon byddwn yn cynnal llu o ddigwyddiadau a gweithgareddau drwy gydol y flwyddyn (gweler tudalen 2 am ragor o fanylion) ac edrychwch am y logo 40 sy’n ymddangos drwy’r llyfryn am ragor o gynyrchiadau sydd wedi’u hysbrydoli gan ein penblwydd yn ddeugain. Ym mis Medi, mae’n bleser mawr gan Sherman Cymru gyflwyno addasiad ffraeth Simon Crowther (The Get Together) o ddrama ddychanol glasurol Alexander Ostrovsky, It’s A Family Affair. Mae’r stori’n seiliedig ar batriarch balch a’r teulu y byddai’n ddoeth iddo beidio ag ymddiried ynddynt. Yn ddiweddarach yn y tymor cewch wledd Nadoligaidd flynyddol, ac eleni rydym yn cyflwyno The Sleeping Beauties, addasiad Rob Evans (Peter Pan) o’r chwedl dylwyth teg boblogaidd, ac i’r plantos Corina Pavlova a’r Llew sy’n Rhuo / Corina Pavlova and the Lion’s Roar, sioe yn llawn hwyl a chanu a mymryn bach o hud a lledrith. Edrychwn ymlaen i’ch croesawau cyn bo hir.

40th Events Digwyddiadau 40

Supported by / Cefnogwyd gan: The Garfield Weston Foundation

As our 40th birthday fast approaches we have been busy organising all sorts of celebrations to mark the event. Here’s a taster of what’s coming up:

Gan fod ein penblwydd yn ddeugain yn prysur agosáu, rydym wedi bod yn brysur yn trefnu pob math o ddathliadau. Dyma ragflas o’r hyn sydd i ddod yn ddiweddarach eleni:

Playwriting

Ysgrifennu Dramâu

To commemorate our 40th anniversary we have set ourselves a task: How many plays can we produce in a season? With the help of our Advanced Writers, ScriptSlam submissions and foyer reading groups our challenge will culminate with our Christmas productions. Totting up the plays and keeping track of our progress will be our very own Sherman Cymru leader board situated in the foyer.

I ddathlu ein penblwydd yn ddeugain rydym wedi gosod tasg i ni ein hunain: Faint o ddramâu y gallwn eu cynhyrchu mewn un tymor? Gyda chymorth ein Hawduron Profiadol, cyflwyniadau ScriptSlam a grwpiau darllen y cyntedd, bydd ein her yn cyrraedd uchafbwynt gyda chynyrchiadau’r Nadolig. Cedwir cyfrif o’r dramâu a chofnod o’n cynnydd ar y bwrdd sgorio, a fydd wedi’i leoli yn y cyntedd.

Foyer Sessions

Sesiynau’r Cyntedd

Even the Foyer Sessions, our free music gigs, are joining in for our birthday celebrations. Later in the year we will see some very special acts gracing our Foyer Session stage, keep an eye on our @ShermanSofa twitter account for the latest announcements and breaking news!

Take a group of directors and put their names in a bowl (so to speak). Get a group of writers to pick out random names from the bowl. Lock them in the Sherman overnight and challenge them to write a 5 minute piece of theatre in various spaces around the building. As Sherman Theatre hits the big 4-0, this year the theme for Sherman Swingers is Turning 40!

Cymerwch grŵp o gyfarwyddwyr a rhowch eu henw mewn het (fel petai). Gofynnwch i grŵp o awduron ddewis enwau ar hap o’r het. Clöwch nhw yn y Sherman dros nos a’u herio i ysgrifennu 5 munud o theatr mewn leoliadau amrywiol o amgylch yr adeilad. Gan fod Theatr y Sherman yn ddeugain eleni, y themâu ar gyfer Sherman Swingers fydd Troi’n Ddeugain!

See 20 short plays in spaces that you’ve never seen before, deep in the heart of the building.

Dewch i weld 20 o ddarnau byr i’r theatr mewn lleoliadau na fyddwch erioed o’r blaen yn ddwfn yng nghrombil yr adeilad.

Mae’n ddiwedd mis Medi - mae’r gwenoliaid yn hedfan tua’r De ac mae’r eglwys lle mae tad Matthew yn bregethwr yn paratoi ar gyfer Diolchgarwch y Cynhaeaf.

But this sixteen-year-old autistic boy finds religious matters bewildering at best and scary at worst, preferring the company of his beloved birds. Matthew’s mother introduces him to a music therapist and from the moment he hears it, Matt is hooked on the mellifluous sounds of the guitar. The return of last year’s sell-out success. From minister’s daughter to Oscar-nominated, booze-soaked, shockingly foul-mouthed Hollywood star, Rachel Roberts (played by BAFTA-winner Helen Griffin) was showered with awards for her powerful, passionate performances in the ground-breaking kitchen-sink dramas, Saturday Night & Sunday Morning and This Sporting Life.

Mae llwyddiant ysgubol y llynedd yn dychwelyd i’r llwyfan. O ferch i weinidog i seren Hollywood feddw sy’n siarad yn fras ac sydd wedi cael ei henwebu am sawl Oscar, cafodd Rachel Roberts (Helen Griffin, ennillydd gwobr BAFTA) lu o wobrau am ei pherfformiadau grymus ac angerddol yn y dramâu tun lludw arloesol, Saturday Night & Sunday Morning a This Sporting Life.

Marriage to Rex Harrison brought a superstar lifestyle which she embraced whole-heartedly – and then set about destroying with her outrageous, provocative behaviour. But even in her darkest moments, no-one escaped her bleak and scathing sense of humour, least of all herself...

Yn sgil priodi Rex Harrison cafodd fyw fel seren, rhywbeth a groesawodd â breichiau agored ac yna aeth ati i’w ddinistrio gyda’i hymddygiad gwallgof, pryfoclyd. Ond hyd yn oed yn ei hawr dduaf, nid oedd modd i neb ddianc rhag ei hiwmor llym a brathog, gan gynnwys hi ei hun.....

In 1933 Erwin Schrödinger won the Nobel Prize for his contribution to quantum mechanics. He theorised a box in which a cat exists as living and dead at the same time. In 1998 Reckless Sleepers built that box - and now over a decade later, they are climbing back inside.

Yn 1933 enillodd Erwin Schrödinger Wobr Nobel am ei gyfraniad at fecaneg cwantwm. Fe greodd ddamcaniaeth am flwch lle y gall cath fod yn fyw ac yn farw ar yr un pryd. Yn 1998 adeiladwyd y blwch hwnnw gan Reckless Sleepers - a thros ddegawd yn ddiweddarach, maent yn dringo yn ôl i mewn iddo.

In one of the company’s most celebrated performance pieces the impossible is probable: truth and illusion are inseparable. Laws are made, bent, then broken. It’s a visually mesmerising performance that sways between question and answer, chaos and order, what we can measure and what we can’t. There will be accompanying workshops as part of WSD2013. False bankruptcy, spoilt rich kids, matchmakers on the take and lawyers on the bottle. Welcome to the world of Moscow’s merchant class, the nouveau riche of 19th century Russia. Written in 1849 then promptly banned, Alexander Ostrovsky’s debut comedy is a scathing satire on a vulgar and deluded society, where blackmail and hypocrisy abound, the rouble rules, and everyone can be bought, sold or borrowed.

Ffug fethdalwyr, plant cyfoethog wedi’u difetha, trefnwyr priodasau sy’n godro arian a chyfreithwyr ar y botel. Croeso i fyd dosbarth masnachol Moscow, nouveau riche Rwsia’r bedwaredd ganrif ar bymtheg. Wedi’i hysgrifennu yn 1849 a’i gwahardd bron yn syth, mae comedi gyntaf Alexander Ostrovsky yn ddrama ddychan ddeifiol am gymdeithas ddichwaeth sydd wedi twyllo’i hun, sy’n llawn blacmêl a rhagrith, sy’n cael ei rheoli gan y rwbl, lle mae pawb yn gallu cael ei brynu, ei werthu neu’i fenthyg.

William Thomas (Twin Town, Mr Nice, Torchwood, Gavin and Stacey, Belonging) is aging merchant Bolshov, who dreams of a daughter-free retirement whilst clinging to his wealth in this new adaptation by Simon Crowther (Sherman Cymru’s The Get Together, ITV’s Coronation Street). Rhodri Meilir (My Family, Caerdydd) is Bolshov’s hapless clerk Lazar, in love with the boss’s daughter but embroiled in his scheme… The question is, who has an eye for the big chance? A night of scheming, plotting and laughter.

William Thomas (Twin Town, Mr Nice, Torchwood, Gavin and Stacey, Belonging) yw Bolshov, y masnachwr sy’n heneiddio sy’n breuddwydio am ymddeol a chael gwared ar ei ferch ond dal ei afael yn ei gyfoeth yn yr addasiad newydd hwn gan Simon Crowther (The Get Together gan Sherman Cymru, Coronation Street). Rhodri Meilir (My Family, Caerdydd) yw Lazar, clerc anffodus Bolshov, sydd mewn cariad â merch ei feistr ond sy’n rhan o’i gynllwyn... Y cwestiwn mawr yw, pwy sy’n gallu gweld y cyfle mawr? An invitation to witness three exceptional dancers as they collaborate in the making of their own choreographic portraits in this revealing documentary film.

Gwahoddiad i wylio tair dawnswraig eithriadol yn cydweithio i greu eu portreadau coreograffig eu hunain yn y ffilm ddogfen ddadlennol hon.

Three women talk candidly about their relationship with dance, performance and what it is to be watched. The unique performances that result are both elaborate and supremely personal: as idiosyncratic as the women who dance them, demonstrating excellence, intimacy and honesty through performance.

He is the funniest comedian I have ever seen… A passionate, chaotically brilliant comedian. The Sunday Times

I am completely in awe of Robert Newman. Of his talent, his passion, his intelligence, and the way he turns them to comedy with real firepower. The Scotsman

Time / Amser: 8.00pm

Tickets / Tocynnau: £14

“Natural history is so full of freaky facts that when you tackle the complexity, you find that there is a wealth of detail, oodles of oddity which lend themselves to comedy.” Comedian, journalist, novelist and activist Rob Newman makes a hotly anticipated return to comedy with his first complete show in 7 years.

Mae y digrifwr, y newyddiadurwr a’r ymgyrchydd Rob Newman yn dychwelyd i fyd comedi gyda’i sioe lawn gyntaf mewn 7 mlynedd.

Rob describes the 150-year controversy in evolutionary theory and explores how the latest science demonstrates that DNA is not destiny. From a Devil’s Orchard made by lemon ants, to female buffalo voting which way to go, from Prince Kropotkin escaping a Tsarist dungeon to altruistic vampire bats and Richard Dawkins’ postman wrestling naked, Rob Newman argues that cooperation drives evolution more than competition.

Disgrifia Rob y ddadl am ddamcaniaeth esblygiad sydd wedi bod yn cael ei thrafod ers 150 o flynyddoedd ac ymchwilia i sut mae’r wyddoniaeth ddiweddaraf yn dangos nad tynged yw DNA. O Berllan y Diafol wedi’i chreu gan forgrug lemwn, i fyfflos benywaidd yn pleidleisio dros ba drywydd i’w ddilyn a phostmon Richard Dawkins yn reslo’n noeth, dadleua Rob Newman fod cydweithredu yn llywio esblygiad yn fwy na chystadleuaeth. 029 2064 6900 / shermancymru.co.uk

Out of the Shadow is an extraordinary mix of breaking, popping and locking, contemporary dance, acrobatics and ballet. It tells a cautionary tale, from the creation of the Universe and evolution of man through to an imaginary apocalyptic future. Set to an epic soundtrack, we see primal images of sacrifice and betrayal, of love and pleasure, death and destruction in this thrilling show.

Cymysgedd rhyfeddol o ddawnsstryd, dawns gyfoes, campau acrobatig a bale yw Out of the Shadow. Mae’n adrodd stori â gwers ynddi, o greu’r Bydysawd i esblygiad dyn a dyfodol apocalyptaidd dychmygol. Gan ddefnyddio dim ond eu cyrff, mae’r criw o 10 yn creu golygfeydd o fyd arall drwy drawsnewid eu hunain yn strwythurau, yn greaduriaid a hyd yn oed yn beiriannau. Gyda thrac sain epig yn gefndir, gwelwn ddelweddau cyntefig o aberth a brad, cariad a phleser, marwolaeth a dinistr yn y sioe wefreiddiol hon.

April, 1984. 13:00. Comrade 6079 Winston Smith thinks a thought, starts a diary, and falls in love. But Big Brother is watching him - and the door to Room 101 can swing open in the blink of an eye.

Ebrill 2013 13:00 Mae rhywbeth yn dod i feddwl Winston Smith, Cymrawd 6079. Mae’n dechrau ysgrifennu dyddiadur ac yn syrthio mewn cariad. Ond mae’r Brawd Mawr yn ei wylio - a gall y drws i Ystafell 101 agor ar amrantiad.

Its ideas have become our ideas, and Orwell’s fiction is often said to be our reality. The definitive book of the 20th century is re-examined in a new staging exploring surveillance, identity and how thinking you can fly might actually be the first step to flying. This major new production explores the world inside Winston Smith’s head, as well as the world without, and catches the euphoria and bliss buried deep underneath the cold face of Big Brother. In an age of mass surveillance, ‘total’ policing and GPS tracking, 1984 is as relevant now as it ever was. From Headlong, the company who brought us the outstanding Medea last year.

Mae ei syniadau ef wedi dod yn syniadau i ni, a dywedir yn aml mai ffuglen Orwell yw ein realiti ni. Dyma olwg o’r newydd ar y llyfr a ddiffiniodd yr 20fed ganrif mewn cynhyrchiad newydd sy’n edrych ar wyliadwriaeth, hunaniaeth a sut y gall meddwl eich bod yn gallu hedfan fod yn gam gyntaf tuag at hedfan. Mae’r cynhyrchiad newydd nodedig hwn yn ymchwilio i’r byd sydd ym mhen Winston Smith, yn ogystal â’r byd y tu allan iddo, ac yn crynhoi’r ewfforia a’r gwynfyd sydd wedi’i gladdu’n ddwfn o dan wyneb oeraidd y Brawd Mawr. Mewn oes o wyliadwriaeth, plismona ‘cyflawn’ a thracio GPS, mae 1984 mor berthnasol nawr ag y bu erioed. Gan Headlong, y cwmni a gyflwynodd y ddrama ragorol Medea i ni y llynedd.

A welcome return following last year’s sell-out success and another opportunity to see Gareth Miles’ masterful translation of Le Dieu de Carnage by Yasmina Reza.

Yn dilyn llwyddiant ysgubol y cynhyrchiad hwn llynedd dyma gyfle arall i chi weld cyfieithiad meistrolgar Gareth Miles o Le Dieu du Carnage gan Yasmina Reza.

2 mothers + 2 fathers + 2 sons x whisky + tulips + a mobile phone = Carnage!

2 fam, 2 dad, 2 fab × wisgi, tiwlips a ffôn = Llanast!

Two sets of parents meet to discuss their unruly sons. As time goes on however, the civilised veneer soon slips, and carnage ensues! A comedy of bad manners.

This Christmas we present a new adaptation of the much loved fairy tale Sleeping Beauty, with a twist.

Y Nadolig hwn cyflwynwn addasiad newydd o’r chwedl dylwyth teg boblogaidd, Sleeping Beauty, ond gyda thro annisgwyl.

There once was a Queen and her servant, Rose. Rose had a daughter, Eve, and the Queen had everything except the one thing she most desperately wanted, a child. She would do anything for a child, even make a promise to a witch… But when the Queen breaks her promise her daughter Dawn is cursed to die on her 15th birthday. 14 years later the two girls, Dawn and Eve, are best friends and would do anything for each other, even if it means sacrificing their world as they fall asleep for a long long time. Follow Dawn and Eve through their journey of friendship, mishaps and what it means to be ‘beautiful’ when the whole world changes in what you thought was the blink of an eye. Will their friendship survive against the dark forces that now roam the kingdom, not to mention the young prince who seems destined to split them apart? Join us this Christmas as Rob Evans reinvents the traditional tale for a new generation. By / Gan: Rob Evans Director / Cyfarwyddwr: Róisín McBrinn

Roedd yna Frenhines a’i morwyn, Rose. Roedd gan Rose ferch o’r enw Eve, ac roedd gan y Frenhines bopeth heblaw yr un peth yr oedd hi eisiau’n fwy na dim arall yn y byd - plentyn. Fe wnâi hi unrhyw beth i gael plentyn, hyd yn oed gwneud addewid i wrach… Ond pan mae’r Frenhines yn torri ei haddewid melltithir ei merch, Dawn, i farw ar ei phenblwydd yn 15 oed. Bedair blynedd ar ddeg yn ddiweddarach mae’r ddwy ferch, Dawn ac Eve, yn ffrindiau pennaf, yn fodlon gwneud unrhyw beth dros y naill a’r llall, hyd yn oed os yw hynny’n golygu aberthu eu byd wrth iddynt syrthio i drwmgwsg am amser maith. Dilynwch Dawn ac Eve ar eu taith o gyfeillgarwch, anffawd a’r hyn mae’n ei olygu i fod yn ‘brydferth’ pan fydd y byd cyfan yn newid ar amrantiad. A fydd eu cyfeillgarwch yn goroesi’r grymoedd cyfrin sydd ar led yn y deyrnas, heb sôn am y tywysog ifanc sy’n benderfynol o’u gwahanu? Ymunwch â ni y Nadolig hwn wrth i Rob Evans ailddyfeisio’r chwedl draddodiadol ar gyfer cenhedlaeth newydd. Designer / Cynllunydd: Rachael Canning

Conversation, Charisma and Chance

Sgwrs, Carisma a Ffawd

Production performed in / Iaith y perfformiad: English / Saesneg

Kontakt is a theatrical experiment that blurs the boundary between performer and audience. 20 performers, 20 audience members and 20 bridge tables, each lit by a single overhanging light bulb.

Arbrawf theatrig yw Kontakt sy’n pylu’r ffin rhwng y perfformiwr a’r gynulleidfa. 20 o berfformwyr, 20 aelod o’r gynulleidfa ac 20 o fyrddau bridge, bob un wedi’i oleuo ag un bwlb sy’n hongian uwchben.

What follows is a series of unique one-to-one encounters, which can include conversations, drawing, writing and sometimes dancing.

Yr hyn sy’n dilyn yw cyfres o gysylltiadau un-i-un, sy’n gallu cynnwys sgyrsiau, darlunio, ysgrifennu ac weithiau dawnsio.

“Kontakt is about allowing different generations to have contact with one another in a safe and comfortable environment. How often does an adult sit across from a table with a 15 year old and have a meaningful interaction or conversation? It’s a fascinating project for both the young people and the audience the cast are not playing characters, there is no script and each performance is very different. It really stretches the boundaries of what theatre is and could be in an everchanging world.” Philip Mackenzie, Head of Creative Learning

“Nod Kontakt yw galluogi gwahanol genedlaethau i ddod i gysylltiad â’i gilydd mewn amgylchedd diogel a chyfforddus. Pa mor aml mae oedolyn yn eistedd o amgylch bwrdd gyferbyn â rhywun 15 oed ac yn cael trafodaeth neu sgwrs ystyrlon? Mae’n brosiect difyr i’r bobl ifanc ac i’r gynulleidfa - nid yw’r cast yn chwarae cymeriadau, nid oes sgript ac mae pob perfformiad yn wahanol iawn. Mae’n gwthio’r ffiniau o ran beth yw theatr a beth y gallai fod mewn byd sy’n newid yn barhaus” Phillip Mackenzie, Pennaeth Dysgu Creadigol

Drwy gydol y flwyddyn mae ein timau Llenyddol ac Artistig wedi canolbwyntio ar ddarganfod a meithrin awduron, yn amrywio o’r profiadol i’r amhrofiadol. Rydym hefyd yn cynnig cyrsiau byr, sgyrsiau a digwyddiadau. Gweler gwefan Sherman Cymru am ddigwyddiadau sydd i ddod.

young writers’ Group y grŴp awduron ifanc Eight new writers aged between 15 and 23 will join us for our latest Young Writers Group Project.

Bydd wyth o awduron ifanc rhwng 15 a 23 oed wedi ymuno â ni ar gyfer ein Prosiect Awduron Ifanc diweddaraf.

Working closely with playwright Alan Harris the writers will be nurtured, encouraged and mentored to enable them to turn their exciting ideas into engaging scripts and performances in celebration of the Sherman’s 40th birthday.

Gan weithio’n agos â’r dramodydd Alan Harris, caiff yr awduron eu meithrin, eu hannog a’u mentora i’w galluogi i droi eu syniadau cyffrous yn sgriptiau ac yn berfformiadau diddorol i ddathlu penblwydd y Sherman yn ddeugain.

SPREAD THE WORD GAIR AR LED Since September 2011, the Literary team have been tirelessly working with 80 writers from all over Wales on eight courses in both English and Welsh as part of our Spread the Word initiative, bringing playwriting opportunities to your doorstep. This endeavour has now come to an end following two very successful years of supporting budding writers throughout Wales. With the help of our fantastic partner theatre companies and buildings in each location, writers have completed courses in Caernarfon, Aberystwyth, Milford Haven, Neath, Mold and finally in Blackwood earlier this year.

Ers mis Medi 2011, mae’r tîm llenyddol wedi bod yn gweithio’n ddiflino gydag 80 o awduron o bob cwr o Gymru ar wyth o gyrsiau drwy gyfrwng y Gymraeg a’r Saesneg fel rhan o’n menter Gair ar Led, gan ddod â chyfleoedd sgriptio at garreg eich drws. Mae’r gwaith hwn wedi dod i ben bellach ar ôl dwy flynedd lwyddiannus iawn o gefnogi darpar awduron ledled Cymru. Gyda chymorth ein partneriaid gwych, cwmnïau theatr ac adeiladau ym mhob lleoliad, mae’r awduron wedi cwblhau cyrsiau yng Nghaernarfon, Aberystwyth, Aberdaugleddau, Castell-nedd, yr Wyddgrug ac yn olaf, yn y Coed Duon yn gynharach eleni.

PLAYTEXTS Dramâu We have published a number of Playtexts to coincide with our productions. These are on sale through our Ticketing and Reception desk, on our website or from the Welsh Books Council.

Rydym yn cyhoeddi nifer o Dramâu i gyd-fynd â’n cynyrchiadau. Mae’r rhain ar werth drwy ein Swyddfa Docynnau a’n Derbynfa, ar ein gwefan neu trwy Gyngor Llyfrau Cymru.

scriptslam Over the course of three days we will be hosting a very special 40-themed edition of ScriptSlam where writers of any level of experience are invited to submit five minute plays which are then performed script-in-hand by professional actors. Paul Mckay ScriptSlam writer Awdur ScriptSlam For me, ScriptSlam provided a fantastic opportunity to try out new work in front of a live audience and get an immediate response to it. The cast performances breathe life into what was once just words on a page. I can see what dialogue works and what doesn’t and from that, refine my work further. I mi, mae ScriptSlam wedi bod yn gyfle gwych i roi cynnig ar waith newydd o flaen cynulleidfa fyw a chael ymateb ar unwaith iddo. Mae’r perfformiadau cast wedi rhoi bywyd i mewn i’r hyn oedd ar un adeg dim ond geiriau sy’n gweithio a’r hyn nad yw’n ac o hynny, mireinio y gwaith pellach.

Mae’r nosweithiau hyn yn gyfle i gwrdd â ffrindiau, cael llymaid a mwynhau’r gerddoriaeth orau o Gaerdydd a’r cyffiniau yn amgylchedd croesawgar ein cyntedd.
