Welcome Croeso Phew – it’s been a busy few months! Particular high points have included: Speechless, our co-production with Shared Experience that enjoyed an award winning sell-out run at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe; Measure for Measure, our take on Shakespeare’s satire located in an old bank complete with arched ceilings, huge chandeliers and underground vaults; and Snow Child/Plentyn yr Eira, our co-production with Theatr Iolo that prompted one mum to say “This show should be available on prescription to all parents of children aged 3-6”! But there’s no resting on laurels at Sherman Cymru…
Whiw – mae’r misoedd diwethaf wedi bod yn brysur! Cafwyd ambell i uchafbwynt arbennig gan gynnwys: Speechless, ein cyd-gynhyrchiad gyda Shared Experience oedd yn llwyddiant ysgubol yng Ngŵyl Ymylol Caeredin; Measure for Measure, ein fersiwn arbennig ni o ddrama ddychan Shakespeare a leolwyd mewn hen fanc, gyda’i nenfwd siâp bwa, ei siandelïers anferth a’i daeargelloedd; a Snow Child/Plentyn yr Eira, ein cydgynhyrchiad â Theatr Iolo a ysgogodd un fam i ddweud: “Dylai’r sioe hon fod ar gael ar bresgripsiwn i bawb sy’n rhiant i blant o 3-6 mlwydd oed”! Ond does dim amser yn Sherman Cymru i laesu dwylo…
February sees the return of Gadael yr Ugeinfed Ganrif, our Welsh language co-production with Dan Y Gwely that went down brilliantly with audiences at the National Eisteddfod. Then in April we’re delighted to be producing Ian Rowland’s latest play Desire Lines, a wryly funny, heartfelt piece about a man’s journey around Wales.
Ym mis Chwefror mae Gadael yr Ugeinfed Ganrif yn dychwelyd – ein cyd-gynhyrchiad Cymraeg gyda Dan Y Gwely, fu’n hynod boblogaidd gyda chynulleidfaoedd yr Eisteddfod Genedlaethol. Yna, ym mis Ebrill, ‘rydym wrth ein bodd cael cynhyrchu drama ddiweddaraf Ian Rowlands, Desire Lines, drama delynegol, ysmala am siwrne un dyn o amgylch Cymru.
We’ll be celebrating new works by emerging writers in English and Welsh with Egin:Springboard and our new venture RAW, and our friends at Chapter will continue to host our ongoing creative learning and artist development activity. And lest we forget! We will also be gearing up for our return to the Sherman building in Autumn 2011 – we still need your help to raise the remaining funds so please see pages 15-17 for more information.
Byddwn yn dathlu’r gwaith gorau mewn datblygiad yn Gymraeg a Saesneg gydag Egin:Springboard a’n menter newydd AMRWD a bydd ein ffrindiau yn Chapter yn parhau i groesawu ein gweithgaredd parhaol ym meysydd dysgu creadigol a datblygu artistiaid. A rhag i ni anghofio! Byddwn hefyd yn paratoi at ddychwelyd i adeilad y Sherman yn ystod yr Hydref 2011 – mae angen eich cymorth o hyd i godi’r arian sy’n weddill, felly ewch i dudalennau 15-17 am ragor o wybodaeth.

Yn nyddiau llwyd refferendwm ’79, roedd Cymru wedi colli’i phlwc a’r sîn roc Gymraeg yn nofio mewn nostaljia. Ond roedd ymweliad aflafar y Sex Pistols â Chaerffili wedi cyffroi dychymyg un bachgen ysgol. Dyma ffurfio band... a fu pethau wedyn byth yr un peth.
During the dark days of the ’79 referendum, Wales had lost its nerve and the Welsh rock scene was wallowing in nostalgia. But the raucous visit of the Sex Pistols to Caerphilly had stirred one schoolboy’s imagination. He had to be in a band...and from then on things were never quite the same.
Anturiaethau hunangofiannol un dyn dros ddau ddegawd olaf yr Ugeinfed Ganrif, a ddaeth i benllanw gyda Cŵl Cymru a Senedd ym Mae Caerdydd, sydd yn plethu delweddau, cerddoriaeth a stori wir. Yn ddarlun egnïol ac o’r galon o gyfnod yn ein hanes pan fynnodd un genhedlaeth aflonydd bod y byd yn dod i Gymru ac a aeth â Chymru i’r byd.
Weaving images, music and a true life story, this is the autobiographical adventure of one man, spanning the last two decades of the Twentieth Century that brought us Cool Cymru and, finally, a Senedd in Cardiff Bay. An energetic and heartfelt portrayal of a time in our history, when a restless generation insisted that the world came to Wales and took Wales to the world.

The journey of a man around Wales. The journey of a soul through the seven ages of man. The journey of a small country towards a coming of age and a better future… Wryly funny, heartfelt and lyrical, Desire Lines traces the pulls and pushes that lead and drive us through life. How do we decide on a place to call home and if we could live it all again, what would we change?
Taith un dyn o amgylch Cymru. Taith un enaid drwy saith amser dyn. Sut mae penderfynu ar y man i’w alw’n gartref, a phetai’n bosib ail-fyw’r cyfan, beth fyddem yn ei newid?

Sut mae manteisio ar golled? Beth sydd i’w ennill o drasiedi? Â’r rhyfel yn un cyfiawn, a oes terfynnau i greulondeb dyn? Drama dywyll, iasol sy’n archwilio cyrhaeddiad erchyllter rhyfel ac yn profi bod gofid i rai yn gyfle i eraill. Drama fuddugol cystadleuaeth y Fedal Ddrama yn Eisteddfod Genedlaethol 2009.

A new drama written by a veteran of the Afghan conflict, interwoven with verbatim interviews from others who have served. A snapshot of the humour, fears and effects of current operations, The Sanger is a visceral portrayal of the life of the modern soldier. Drama newydd wedi’i hysgrifennu gan un fu’n ymladd yn Afghanistan, wedi’i phlethu â chyfweliadau gair am air gan eraill fu’n gwasanaethu. Cipolwg sydyn ar yr hiwmor, yr ofnau ac effeithiau’r gweithredu presennol, mae The Sanger yn ddarlun angerddol o fywyd y milwr cyfoes. Artists’ Development/ Datblygiad Artistiaid Over the past two years the Artists’ Development initiative has facilitated the research and development of some 35 artists embracing many and varied art forms.
Dros y ddwy flynedd ddiwethaf mae ein menter Datblygu Artistiaid wedi galluogi tua 35 o artistiaid ymchwilio a datblygu eu gwaith, gan fynd i’r afael â nifer o ffurfiau celfyddydol gwahanol.
Some of these projects have progressed from early exploration into full-scale productions. These include: Give it a Name’s adaptation of Heart of Darkness as a site-specific performance at 10 Feet Tall, and most recently, their ska musical Rude, performed in The Rocking Chair; and Gareth Potter’s one-man play, Gadael yr Ugeinfed Ganrif, co-produced by Sherman Cymru and Dan y Gwely (see pages 4/5). Future projects include: a production of Caryl Churchill’s Serious Money directed by Mathilde Lopez and produced by Waking Exploits.
Ers y cyfnod cychwynnol hwnnw mae rhai o’r prosiectau wedi eu datblygu’n gynyrchiadau llawn. Mae’r rhain yn cynnwys: addasiad Give it a Name o Heart of Darkness, darn saflebenodol yn 10 Feet Tall, ac, yn fwy diweddar, eu miwsical ska Rude, a berfformiwyd yn The Rocking Chair; a drama un dyn Gareth Potter, Gadael yr Ugeinfed Ganrif, cyd-gynhyrchiad rhwng Sherman Cymru a Dan y Gwely (gweler tud. 4/5). Dyma un o’r prosiectau sydd i ddod: cynhyrchiad o ddrama Caryl Churchill Serious Money, a gyfarwyddir gan Mathilde Lopez ac a gynhyrchir gan Waking Exploits.

Redevelopment/ Ail-Ddatblygiad
As well as all the activity that’s been happening away from the Sherman building, there is also the work that’s being done to the building itself as it undergoes its extensive refurbishment.
Yn ogystal â’r gweithgarwch sydd wedi bod yn digwydd y tu hwnt i waliau adeilad y Sherman, mae gwaith hefyd yn cael ei wneud i’r adeilad ei hun wrth iddo gael ei adnewyddu’n sylweddol.
Our contractors, Dawnus Construction, have started work on site and the Senghennydd Road landscape is changing – the hoardings are up, diggers have started tearing up the old staff car park which will become our brand new rehearsal room and internal walls have been demolished and new ones built to form the revitalised foyer area – it’s all very exciting!
Mae’r dirwedd yn Ffordd Senghennydd yn prysur newid gan fod ein contractwyr, Contractwyr Dawnus, wedi dechrau gweithio ar y lleoliad – mae’r palisau wedi eu codi; y peiriannau cloddio wedi dechrau dinistrio hen faes parcio’r staff, ble fydd ein hystafell ymarfer newydd yn cael ei chreu; mae waliau mewnol hefyd wedi eu dymchwel a rhai newydd wedi eu hadeiladu i ffurfio cyntedd newydd sbon – cyffrous dros ben!
Please read on to find out how you can support the redevelopment and ensure that Cardiff has a producing theatre of which we can all be proud, now and into the future.
Byddwch mor garedig â pharhau i ddarllen er mwyn gweld sut gallwch chi gefnogi’r gwaith ail-ddatblygu, a sicrhau fod gan Gaerdydd theatr gynhyrchu y gallwn oll ymfalchïo ynddi, ‘nawr ac i’r dyfodol.
