Our big towns Nowra and Ulladulla are the lifeblood of Shoalhaven with everything you need and more, such as great cafes, specialty stores, and both of our Visitor Centres. Highlights of Nowra include the iconic Shoalhaven Zoo and Kholi’s Indian. The fishing village Ulladulla is home to great views, shopping, and awardwinning Cupitt’s Estate on the outskirts of town.

In 2022, Berry won Top Small Town in New South Wales, and Culburra Beach and Sussex Inlet were finalists. For towns with fewer than 5,000 people, they sure punch above their weight. Berry is known for its historic village charm. The top-rated place to eat is South on Albany where local produce sings, while the top-rated activity is Berry Markets held on the first Sunday of every month. To the east is Culburra Beach. Pack your boards and bikes and head to The Little Snapper for great cocktails and share plates, then take a sunrise walk on the dogfriendly Culburra Beach. A little further south lies Sussex Inlet, a fishing and watersports town with water so blue you’ll want to dive right in! Head to Pelican Shores Café & Marina for a bite – dial ahead to order fish and chips and pull the boat up to the jetty to grab your eats!

Shoalhaven is home to 49 unique towns and coastal villages from Kangaroo Valley in the north, to Murramarang National Park in the south. Take a trip through the region with TripAdvisor’s top-rated things to eat and do.

Next up are our Tiny Towns with fewer than 1,500 people. Huskisson, Kangaroo Valley, and Milton all ooze coastal country charm. Wind your way through the escarpment into Kangaroo Valley, past the waterfalls and down to the coast. Be sure to stop for a photo at the iconic Hampden Bridge over the Kangaroo River, then head out for a paddle or an overnight stay at Bendeela Camping and Picnic Area. The top-rated place to eat is the quaint yet modern The General Café Head to the white sands of Huskisson, the heart of Jervis Bay. Grab a coffee from 5 Little Pigs and take a punt over to Callala and back on the Husky Ferry. Just inland of world-famous Mollymook Beach is the cute heritage town of Milton. Shop up a storm on the main street, then unwind with an afternoon aperitivo at The Guild Italian and a stroll through Millhouse Galleries

WINE WHALES&

Whether swimming with humpback whales or wandering through award-winning wineries, Shoalhaven is the ultimate destination for travellers chasing a unique winter escape.

Each year from May to November, Shoalhaven’s coast comes alive with the annual whale migration. Our sheltered bays are favourite rest stops for whales and their calves as they travel along the ‘humpback highway’, making it one of Australia’s best spots for a guaranteed sighting or close encounter.

Get up close with humpback whales and try an epic ‘Swim with the Whales’ experience with Dive Jervis Bay or Woebegone Freedive, two of only a few licensed operators in New South Wales. Travellers describe the experience as ‘life-changing’ and ‘unforgettable’, with curious whales often moving closer for a better look at swimmers.

The Shoalhaven Wine Coast is a treat for both wine connoisseurs and those looking for fresh country air and adventure. Award-winning varietals are paired with fun foodie activities like high tea in a giant teacup, top class

restaurants, tours and tastings, art galleries and meetthe-maker experiences.

Shoalhaven’s temperate climate and lush soil produce some of the world’s most acclaimed drops. All nine of the region’s cellar doors are on the doorstep of the famous Shoalhaven coast, including Cambewarra Estate Winery, Mountain Ridge Wines, Coolangatta Estate, Cupitt’s Estate, Two Figs Winery, Silos Estate, Bawley Vale Estate, Yarrawa Estate and Lyrebird Ridge Organic Winery.

Join us in Shoalhaven as the magic of winter takes over, the wines are uncorked, and the annual whale migration kisses the coastline – there’s truly no better place to be!

WALKSWild

Didthul Pigeon House Mountain (Balgan) near Ulladulla is one of the most iconic walks in New South Wales. Hike through age-old sandstone and forests before negotiating a series of ladders that lead you to the summit with amazing views of cliffs and gorges within the Budawang Wilderness.

Mount Bushwalker walking track is an exhilarating, 7km ramble along the escarpment of Morton National Park which rewards more experienced hikers with sweeping views over The Castle and Clyde Gorge. For another stunning view but a much easier walk, take the 1km Granite Falls track to take in the waterfall and springtime wildflowers and enjoy a picnic by the lookout.

For a rich cultural experience, immerse yourself in Booderee National Park, a special place managed by the local Wreck Bay Aboriginal Community and Parks Australia. Located on the southern peninsula of Jervis Bay, Booderee translates to ‘Bay of Plenty’ in the local Dhurga language. Take the epic Munyunga Waragan Dhugan walking trail near Murrays Beach. This 5km loop offers a great mix of coastal scenery and expansive bay views, with a good chance of catching a glimpse of passing white-bellied sea eagles, dolphins, and whales.

Spend a day exploring Jervis Bay starting with the Round the Bay Track. This extensive path between Huskisson and Nelson Beach, Vincentia is fully accessible to bikes, prams and wheelchairs. Pedestrians can continue long the White Sands Walk, a stunning coastal bush track which winds through scribbly gums and across white sand beaches. Hot tip for summer –trek the White Sands Walk to Hyams Beach and avoid the crowds!

If you’re bringing your four-legged friend along, head into Nowra for a meander along the river at Bens Walk or Bomaderry Creek Regional Park. Both walks have a wide array of landscapes ranging from rocky outcrops to lush creek-side vegetation.

Friends on two wheels also love the numerous mountain bike trails throughout the region, as well as our world-class rock climbing spots. Wherever you are on country, please leave only footprints – and don’t forget to breathe and enjoy that special connection to nature.

A DESIGNER’S LIFE

Neale Whitaker

My partner David and I moved to Shoalhaven from Sydney in 2018, but our love affair with this beautiful region began long before that. For many years we would escape to Berry at weekends with our dogs as often as we could. And even though the drive from Sydney is now just an easy two hours (thank you Albion Park Rail bypass), once you’re here the city could be a thousand miles away. That’s the magic of Shoalhaven.

Even though we now call this region home, it’s fun sometimes to play tourist. In recent years, Berry has established itself as a homewares mecca. So many great individual stores to suit every style, but AMARA Home, Few & Far and Hampshire Interiors are favourites. Life for us tends to revolve around our canine family and we love to walk on Seven Mile Beach at Shoalhaven Heads or further south at pristine Nelson Beach close to Jervis Bay. And it’s fair to say that – after our dogs and our home – food and wine feature high on the list. The newly

refurbished Post House of Berry serves delicious Asian food (dumplings a speciality), while Quattro Pizzeria and Il Locale, also in Berry, never fail to deliver. Further afield, Cupitt’s Estate and Milk Haus make Milton a foodie destination, and Hampden Deli, Dining School and Wine Lounge is well worth the magnificent winding climb to Kangaroo Valley. Locals know Nowra Fresh is the best place to stock up on fish, meat, local produce and artisan foods, and for a good local drop, we can’t go past Two Figs Winery and Mountain Ridge Wines

For a quick fix of history and culture in a breathtaking location, the new Art Museum at Bundanon designed by Kerstin Thompson Architects is a must. It won’t be a secret for long.

A DOG’S LIFE

Winnie the Cavoodle

Woof! Woof! Hello, I am Winnie Winchester. My humans and I live in Shoalhaven, one of the most pet-friendly destinations in Australia. Nowra is a great town for furry friends. Ben’s Walk is a fun, 90-minute nature walk with a suspension bridge and ‘fetching’ cliff views. My humans put the leash on me for this one, so I don’t get lost. Then, off to Hyper Hyper Coffee! They have an outdoor seating area where I can lick up my puppycino and wag my tail to live music on Sundays. The Deli on Kinghorne is also great for a bit more of a munch and crunch. My humans take my leash off to play fetch on Seven Mile Beach at Shoalhaven Heads. Then we walk to lunch at Shoalhaven Heads Hotel. Lucky the Heads Hotel and Motel is pet friendly. When lunch rolls right on into dinner, we can all stay here together!

Before long I’m on this long board called a SUP with Sussex Inlet SUP. I am entertaining other humans who are enjoying my pup on a SUP moves. We then book into one of the two pet-friendly camping and caravan parks for a night under the stars at Alamein Caravan Park or Riverside Caravan Park

A #petfriendlyhaven where the whole family can travel together. To avoid getting put in the naughty corner, leave the endangered shorebirds alone, make sure your humans scoop up your poop and read beach signage before you play!

The South Coast is buzzing with breweries and distilleries, a perfect complement to the many wineries and cellar doors that dot the landscape. These lively venues offer up local vibes, food, and music to boot, with a wide range of beers and liquor to sample on-site or take home with you. Bottoms up!

Sidle up to the bar and experience Nowra’s vibrant brewing and distilling scene. Local twins Simon and Joey turned a passion for home brewing into thriving microbrewery, South Yeast Brewing. Expect to find creative flavours inspired by their deep connection to the community, like their Hyper Stout – a coffee chocolate stout infused with local roaster Hyper Hyper’s own espresso. Husky Brewing in South Nowra offers a range of distinctive beers brewed onsite and is the perfect dog-friendly space to enjoy sundowners with man’s best friend. Tara Distillery is the home of Shoalhaven’s own internationally award-winning, handcrafted gin, vodka, whiskey and liqueurs, proudly made in the heart of the South Coast. Newcomer Old Salt Distillery is a small batch brewery and distillery run by husband-and-wife Terry and Michelle with an open kitchen, wood-fired grill and a menu that hints at this couple’s fine-dining pedigree.

Out towards the coastal town of Huskisson you’ll find the relaxed beer garden setting of Jervis Bay Brewing Co, where a range of intriguingly named brews reference local history and landmarks and where sustainability is at the heart of everything they do. A three-minute hop, skip and jump up the road will take you to Flamin Galah Brewing Co where not only will you be able to sample an expansive range of beer but an impressive cocktail list too, with some based on their very own vodka.

Further south, the Milton Hotel is home to Dangerous Ales and is the place where the three fundamental Fs (flavour, food and fermentation) combine for an astronomical gastronomical experience. Don’t let the reputation for stunning wines fool you. Cupitt’s Estate has its own brewery that has perfected the craft of finding balance in complexities.

Dolphins can often be spotted here, and visitors should pack a set of binoculars for spotting whales from May to November. Venture into Murramarang National Park to find Pebbly

Beach, a popular surfing location, home to the mythical surfing kangaroo and a campground by the beach. Surrounded by rugged national parks, the coastal village of Bawley Point provides the perfect setting for a myriad of seaside adventures. The recently restored gantry is the perfect spot to set up for the day.

Walking tracks throughout Shoalhaven have stunning lookouts, providing unbeatable views. Three Views Walking Track is a 9.5-kilometre long level track that incorporates a cliff-edge viewing point that offers an unspoilt view of the landscape. Located in Morton National Park, Little Forest is an easy walking track with views of the iconic Pigeon House Mountain Didthul (Balgan)

Mermaid Pools at Cudmirrah Nature Reserve is a perfect place to cool off with a scenic swim. The natural rock pools are surrounded by beach and bushland and typify Shoalhaven’s unspoilt appeal. Accessible by boat only, Jervis Bay Caves in the Jervis Bay Marine Park makes for a secluded and breathtaking backdrop.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and Shoalhaven is home to some of the most stunning lookouts and vistas in Australia, making it one of the best destinations for travellers looking for a pictureperfect stay!

LIGHTLY Treading

As holidaymakers’ awareness of their potential impact has increased, so has the emphasis on sustainability for visitors. Shoalhaven offers an opportunity to reconnect with nature and experience a range of offerings for the eco-conscious traveller.

For the ultimate luxury glamping experience at Jervis Bay, check out Paperbark Camp, one of the pioneers of glamping in Australia. You can also glamp at The Cove, The Woods Farm, South Coast Retreat, Holiday Haven or Bangalay Retreat in Bawley Point. Just be sure to book well ahead as these stays are super popular.

Prefer to rough it a little? Shoalhaven has a wide range of under-the-stars camping options. From primitive beachfront beauty and rugged riverside, to caravan parks with everything you need, it’s all here. Some places are so popular, sites are allocated via ballot. For the rest, it’s ‘first in best dressed’, so book early.

Beachfront sites run hot year-round with many located in Booderee National Park and Murramarang National Park. Enjoy your own fire and try glamping by the river at Coolendel in West Nowra or bring your pets along and bunk down at Grady’s Riverside Retreat

Shoalhaven welcomes electric vehicles, with many charging stations at beautiful places you can recharge your car overnight or while you enjoy a meal before

your next adventure. Plan your trip around Silos Estate, Mountain Ridge Wines, Bangalay Luxury Villas and Dining or Bannisters by the Sea and Bannisters Pavilion

There are a few simple things you can do to make sure you leave Shoalhaven as beautiful as you found it. If you are bringing your pets, be sure to keep them on leash outside the designated off-leash areas, especially during spring when our beautiful shore birds are about. Fires on beaches are prohibited, and please do not pet or feed native animals and slow down for wildlife esspecially at dawn and dusk.

Don’t forget to bring your re-useable shopping bags, water bottles, and keep cups. If you forget them, pick some up at our visitors’ centre. Help support our farmers and producers by filling up with goodies from our small specialty stores, farm gates, and markets.
